Hurricane Laura comes ashore, bringing with it high winds and heavy rain. We look at how it could affect Mississippi as it begins it's turn eastward. Then, expungements were a core issue of the Governor's veto of a comprehensive criminal reform bill. We explore why reform advocates feel they should be expanded.Plus, in today's Book Club: A longtime GOP strategist has given up on his party as he details in his book, “It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump.”Segment 1:Hurricane Laura roared ashore along the southwest Louisiana coastline in the early hours of the morning, having intensified to strong Category 4 status with winds reaching 150 miles per hour and a storm surge unprecedented for the area. We're joined by Robert Ricks of the National Weather Service in Slidell.MEMA Director Greg Michel is calling on Mississippians to stay weather aware as Laura tracks inland. He says the storm's path resembles 2005's Hurricane Rita - which brought tornadic activity to the state.Segment 2:When Governor Tate Reeves vetoed a bi-partisan criminal justice reform bill last month, he cited the expanded number of expungements, and the perceived safety concern they presented, as a key factor in his decision. House Bill 658 would have allowed Mississippians to get up to three non-violent felony convictions removed from their record. State law currently allows one felony expungement. Advocates and lawmakers seeking this type of reform say it helps those convicted of felonies get their lives back on track. MPB's Desare Frazier speaks with an expungement recipient, an attorney with the Mississippi Center for Justice, and a lawmaker hoping to bring the bill back.Segment 3:Stuart Stevens has been a staunch Republican for most of his life. A top strategist for Republican presidential candidates George W. Bush and Mitt Romney. The Jackson native helped Haley Barbour, Thad Cochran, and Roger Wicker get elected. But now Stevens has given up on his party because of the GOP's embrace of President Donald Trump. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan had some blunt criticism for the incumbent president of his own political party on the latest Dispatch Podcast, and all but ruled out supporting Donald Trump in November. “This week the president said he was going to cut funding for testing,” said Hogan, in conversation with Sarah Isgur and Steve Hayes. “That was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.” Hogan continued: “My biggest criticism was at the beginning the president didn’t take it seriously enough, and was downplaying the severity of the crisis.” Hogan believes that the Trump administration has since made progress with its coronavirus strategy, and he’s encouraged that Trump finally donned a mask in public and spoke publicly about the importance of wearing one. But, he added, the federal government is still months behind on testing and tracing and appears to be no closer to coming up with a national testing plan, an inexcusable oversight. Hogan went further than he has before in discussing whether he intends to support his fellow Republican in November. “Probably not,” Hogan said. Hogan also believes the GOP has a lot of work to do to recover in a post-Trump era. When pressed on whether the president has grown the Republican Party, he said, “No I don’t think he has at all,” pointing to Haley Barbour’s truism that politics is about addition and multiplication, not subtraction and division. “Quite frankly, I think the president has really been focused on, you know, dividing and subtracting.” Listen to Hogan, Sarah, and Steve discuss the ins and outs of coronavirus strategizing from a policymaker’s perspective and his hopes for the future of the Republican Party. Bush, C Boyden Gray and Haley Barbour join Peter Robinson to discuss fond memories of his leadership, friendship, humility, and legacy. They discuss the 41st President’s involvement in the Clean Air Act, the reputational teeter totter the public had with him and Reagan, and his foreign policy decisions. They talk about Kuwait and the first Persian Gulf war and speculate that if President Bush had decided to go after Saddam Hussein then the Iraq War in the 2000s could have been avoided. They argue that President Bush took foreign policy in a good direction for the United States in the wake of the Cold War. They go into detailed analysis about President Bush, the issues he faced, and how he worked for peaceful negotiations, and was grace under fire. President George H. W. Bush was a gentleman of a past generation, says Robinson. They discuss whether or not being a gentleman is still something to aspire to in politics and in the office of the president.

This week on The Ricochet Podcast, social conservatives make their case to Rob, Haley Barbour makes his case for a new party coalition, Victor Davis Hanson is optimistic about the future and schools us in the finer points of pistachio farming, Lileks defends cruising, and Peter is under the weather. As the program last week identified all the candidates that were interested in the Republican nomination, we have already had fallout with a potential candidate saying he will not run.

Stimulated Boredom | Reviews. Gadgets. Gaming. Geek Culture. Podcast.

In the second segment of this week's show...well, quite frankly, I'm all over the place...as I discuss some of the most recent news that occurred / caught my attention since the last new show, trying to squeeze my opinion of all of it into one segment! I start with recent comments made by Mike Huckabee, as a result of his 'not so subtle' tip of the hat to the Tea Party crowd and perhaps the beginning of some preliminary 2012 election rhetoric. As a result, I dissect his remarks, their intent (in my opinion) and set the record straight as it pertains to the GOP's incessant focus and intentional misleading narrative about President Obama's father and upbringing. Next up is a little pre-election discussion of possible scenarios that I see materializing; including Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, Mitch Edwards, and Haley Barbour et al...and why Democrats are so bad at politics. The segment is rounded out with commentary on Peter King's "Muslim Hearings", the release of the iPad 2 and other musings that I can't think of right now as I write this description. :) www.stimulatedboredom.com
