Send us a Text Message.TGTPTU Book Club returns this week with Sir Christopher Nolan's first and only adaption, i.e., THE PRESTIGE (2006), with bookworm and repeat guest Shannon joining from The Bunker.   Post-Batman Begins, Sir Nolan returned to his love of puzzle-box stories to bring to life the work of another Chris (Christopher Priest) while casting a third Chris (Christian Bale) as a rival magician to a non-Chris (Hugh Jackman) to make one of top three magician rivalry movies wide-released in 2006.   Sir Nolan omits the present-day framing story around Priest's novel to focus on the period and the rivalry between magicians Angier (Jackman) and Borden (Bale) as the former seeks revenge on the latter for his wife's death (yes, it's another rare Nolan movie with a dead wife but you actually get two dead ladies—BOGO (Bury One, Get One)—for your money ). Keeping with the novel, each magician has a secret that allows him to perform a teleported man trick, with Borden's secret seeming to be the anticipated, singular trick of the movie until the rug-pull at the end when the Great Sir C. Nolan the Magnificent abracadabras Angier's clone-killing conclusion for a prestige of his own .  Uncontroversially, Scarlett Johansson is poorly used as the rivalling magicians' assistants while David Bowie gets one of the best entrances in cinema history portraying Nicholas Tesla, a man with his own bitter professional rivalry and a last name that is impossible to say 18 years after this movie premiered without thinking of the car, much like what once beset my great-grandmother Edsel and our uncle PT “Cruiser” Koral.  Listen along as Jason Statham pops in, award-winning thespian Michael Caine is put on blast by our special guest, and the hosts break down why this might be the most “Nolan-y” Nolan film Sir Chris has made.  THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Welcome Friends and thank you for connecting with us for another wonderful episode of CWC! In Today's episode we catch up with our good friend Paige King Johnson and talk about new music, life, and exciting things happening in 2024. Meet Paige: In a quiet North Carolina town 22 miles south of Raleigh, as a young 9-year-old girl, Paige King Johnson spent her days imitating the styles of Loretta, Patsy, Waylon, and Merle. Having a grandpa as her biggest fan also meant receiving the gift of her first guitar – a baby Taylor - and enrolling in lessons. After her grandpa passed, the bright-eyed dreamer carried on his memory by taking her newfound discovery to local fairs, festivals, and any other stage she was allowed to stand on. As she grew older, Johnson added “opening act” to her resume, supporting chart topping artists like Kane Brown, Oliver Anthony, Joe Nichols, Gabby Barrett, Diamond Rio, Scotty McCreery, Kylie Morgan, Neal McCoy and more. And with high school graduation came the realization that this was more than a hobby. The Angier native traded in horse pastures for the bright lights of Music City in 2015. Upon starting school at Belmont University for Music Business, Johnson honed in on the magic that had heavily influenced her as a child: the art of storytelling thru songwriting. Sixty years ago, when basketball fans jammed old Carter Gym for the Harnett County high school championship, little did anyone know that those in attendance would be witnesses to history.   That night – February 29, 1964 – Boone Trail and Angier played a game that lasted 13 overtimes before Boone Trail won 56-54.  No basketball game on the high school, college or professional level has lasted as long.   Frank Stewart was a senior guard for the Boone Trail Pioneers and led all scorers that night with 29 points.  He graduated and enrolled at Campbell in the fall of 1964, where he played under legendary coach Fred McCall.   Along the way, Frank played an important role on Campbell teams that later became an NAIA powerhouse.  He graduated, moved into the teaching and coaching profession, raised three kids, but stayed in touch with his teammates and opponents from the 13-overtime game.   In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Stan Cole talks with Frank Stewart about growing up in Harnett County, the 13-overtime game, his path to Campbell and his six-decade journey since Leap Day 1964.

Habits, Who You Associate With, Focus, & the Trick – Best of Host Matt on Business Topics Part 2 - AZ TRT S05 EP01 (216) 1-7-2024   Things We Learned This Week: Think Habits, Not Resolutions (vs. Goals) You Are Who You Associate With in relationships, business, & life The One Thing - Why Focus is Critical - Key Results That's the Trick - Daily Work, the Grind     Notes: Seg. 1   Think Habits, Not Resolutions We are often told to make New Year's Resolutions, but then by February we have all given up on those promises. I am encouraging you today to start the New Year early with looking at how to improve your habits, not make resolutions.     Real change does not happen overnight despite what Facebook, and a highlight society has promised. Most successful people have good daily habits, make proper decisions, and are consistent with their follow thru. We know that you probably are not motivated anyway to attack your New Year's Resolutions. So instead of some promise that can only be carried out by will power (or enthusiasm), how about a different approach? The goal is not really to have a Resolution, as so much a lifestyle change that sticks. We are a collection of our thoughts, lifestyle, and daily actions. You can see it when you meet with people all the time. You notice how they look, act, or what they eat. So let's stick to practical, and realistic advice. You want to develop actions (sleep habits, eating, rest, relaxation, meditation, etc.) that you will follow thru on daily. These will turn into habits, which will create that lifestyle change. The popular notion is it takes repetition of an act over 20 to 30 days for it to become a habit. The reality is it is more like 2 months (or more) according to a study by Phillippa Lally is a health psychology researcher at University College London. There are 3 books that have come out the last few years that cover these topics. We are all very busy, so I understand if you do not have time to read every self help or success book that is released. I've actually have only skimmed these books, but instead watched YouTube videos to get the themes. I am a believer in daily self improvement and online videos provide a good resource. The Power of Habit: Charles Duhigg at TEDxTeachersCollege Duhigg is a NY times writer who wrote a book that breaks down how we go about our habits, and what cues the brain has that create our habits.  What's fascinating about this is if you start understand what rewards you receive from bad habits, you can find substitutes to replace with better habits. The process for a habit goes like this - a Cue happens, then you have your Routine, then a Reward for the Habit. Duhigg's example is he would take a cookie break every afternoon about 3 pm. The Cue was 3pm, the routine was going to get the cookie, and the reward was eating the cookie. This was a bad habit, and he was gaining weight. So he replaced this habit with social time everyday at 3pm. He would wander over to another employee's cubicle and talk to them. His reward would be social interaction, and distraction and he stopped his bad snacking. Psychologically the more you do your habits, the less you think about the action. This is good when you have established healthy habits. Do not underestimate the reward part either. Even if you reward a positive action with a questionable gift. Over time you may not even need the reward, and you just do the action out of habit. Arianna Huffington on The Science of Sleep and Success with Lewis Howes This is not the best talk, but her main points about the importance of sleep cannot be overstated. So much of productivity is in society is linked to how much sleep one gets. Also a multitude of health disorders are linked to sleep, and everyone needs at least 7 (to 9) hours of sleep daily.  If you choose to ignore this, eventually you burn out or worse. We spend so much time adding things to our schedule, and this usually just makes us too busy. Instead of getting to all the things on your list, your work just suffers. Ultimately this affects your day, adds stress and hurts sleep. Slowing down, prioritizing your health (and sleep) will actually make you more productive over the long run. Hopefully these 3 examples will help you to evaluate your current habits. Then you evaluate what you are working to change in your current routine to improve yourself over the long term.  Good Luck with your new habits. Have a good and safe Holiday Season.   Article: HERE     Atomic Habits by James Clear The Book in Three Sentences 1.    An atomic habit is a regular practice or routine that is not only small and easy to do but is also the source of incredible power; a component of the system of compound growth. 2.    Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. 3.    Changes that seem small and unimportant at first will compound into remarkable results if you're willing to stick with them for years. The Five Big Ideas 1.    Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. 2.    If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead. 3.    The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become. 4.    The Four Laws of Behavior Change are a simple set of rules we can use to build better habits. They are (1) make it obvious, (2) make it attractive, (3) make it easy, and (4) make it satisfying. 5.    Environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior.                  Book Summay: HERE         Seg. 2 Clip from Seg. 2 of: You Are Who You Associate With - BRT S01 EP21 6-28-20 + Covid 19 Crisis & the Economy Homeless Population in Phx Struggling and How to Help   MB on You Are Who You Associate With - in relationships of business and life   Notes: Partner and hire ‘A' people Relationships Process / Results Strategies Ultimate example – Paypal Mafia and all the tech startups that came from it  Steve Jobs died in 2011 years ago – Apple still a Top 10 companies. Continuing our series on integrity we examine the lives of two rival magicians Alfred Borden and Robert Angier as they each seek to become the world's greatest.  Over the course of their life-long pursuits their lack of integrity slowly rips their worlds apart leaving them with hollow endings.  We empathize with their painful plight, but how can we avoid the same fate that many like Borden and Angier fall into on our journey to become magnanimous leaders?

The Interview:Although he did experience some fanfare in his lifetime, German writer, academic, and novelist W.G. Sebald—Max to his friends and colleagues—died 20 years ago in a car crash near his adoptive home in Norwich, England. He was only 58.His postmodern novels—Vertigo, The Emigrants, The Rings of Saturn and Austerlitz—were written in quick succession in a period of less than 10 years, and they were all published in English translations in less than five years, making him one of Germany's biggest authors, almost overnight. Before his death, Sebald had taught in the British university system for decades, mainly at the University of East Anglia, where he helped found the literary translation department. He really did not begin writing in his signature style—a mix of travelogue, memoir, historical fiction with embedded pictures and ephemera—until middle age, however. Walter Benjamin famously opined that any great writer creates their own genre; Sebald accomplished this with just a brief collection of books. Through his unique, poetic prose style of writing, his books grab hold and immerse readers in a world of memory and loss like no other novelist. Trauma runs through his work and his characters seem so real because, like most fictional creations—at least in part—they are based on real people. Sebald's distinctive style got him into trouble, both when he was alive and certainly posthumously. Some readers have taken issue with his re-purposing of Jewish folks' true-life stories. He has been accused, in some cases, of exploiting these stories for personal gain through novelization. When I first began to read his work, shortly after his death in 2001, I interpreted his work to be an homage to the Jewish lives he chronicled, written by a German who grew up in the shadow, silence, and shame of the horrors of WWII. Sebald's father was a military man—a Nazi officer during the war and a member of the re-constituted German army in the post-war years. Sebald grew up in the beatific surroundings of Bavaria in Germany and had a deep hatred for the Nazi regime and his own family's complicity. The fate of the Jews—and other minorities targeted by the Nazi war machine—is a mournful thread that Sebald tears at throughout all of his novels. He also wrote a nonfiction study of the bombings of German cities, entitled On the Natural History of Destruction.Enter biographer Carole Angier, whose previous books include studies of novelist Jean Rhys and Italian physicist and writer Primo Levi. Angier, who grew up in Canada before returning to the UK, is of Viennese descent. She is also Jewish and roughly the same age Sebald would have been had he lived. It took her seven years to finish Speak, Silence (Bloomsbury, 2021). The title, of course, a nod to Nabokov's famous memoir, Speak, Memory, one of Sebald's favorite books. Angier and I caught up recently to discuss her 600-plus-page doorstopper of a book. One of the reasons I wanted to talk with her about it—apart from my longtime love of Sebald—was to ask for her thoughts on the controversy his work still seems to generate, even 20 years after his death. A great deal of the reviews of Speak, Silence, in the States at least, were hyper-critical of Sebald playing fast and loose with some facts in his fiction. But all great fiction writers pluck characteristics and facts to shape their fictional worlds and, so, while Sebald's use of real photographs and ephemera in his work for visual effect made his narrative style offensive to some, it also made it more potent for others. In this interview, Angier speaks to this subject, and many more. The Reading:For the reading, we pulled audio from an event at the 92nd Street Y from 2001, where Sebald read from his then newest novel Austerlitz. He was tragically killed in a car crash later that year. Music by Tangerine Dream92Y Reading link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccMCGjWLlhY&t=1620s

W.G. Sebald has been described as “a writer of almost unclassifiable originality”. He wrote about the plight of emigrants, and in particular, emigrants from the Holocaust. His obsessions included survivor's guilt, the nature of decline and fall, loss and decay, and the downward plunge of nature and history. I discussed Sebald's life and work with his biographer Carole Angier.

W.G. Sebald was one of the most important literary figures of the bridge between the 20th and 21st centuries. Twenty years after his death, we were joined by acclaimed biographer Carole Angier, the author of Speak, Silence: In Search of W.G. Sebald (Bloomsbury), described by Alberto Manguel as ‘an extraordinary achievement, able to capture the genius of Sebald without trapping him in facile definitions'. In the premiere episode of Single Serving Cinema, Tim and Tay explore a deceptively simple and highly functional scene in the spiraling, multi-layered narrative of Christopher Nolan's The Prestige. The Prestige tells the story of two rival stage magicians in Victorian-era London, and their obsessive pursuits to gain superiority, no matter the cost. Directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, The Prestige was released on Oct. 20, 2006.The Prestige is available to stream on Disney+, and as a digital rental.   Scene (0:13:27- 16:02)Featuring Hugh Jackman as Robert Angier, Christian Bale as Alfred Borden, Piper Perabo as Julia Angier, and Michael Caine as Cutter. The scene is set backstage following a successful, but apparently, "boring", act by Milton, a show magician that the quartet all work for. Borden largely drives the conversation regarding the lack of originality in Milton's show, while Angier questions Borden's morality and his bluntness on the subject. Cutter calls out Borden for using the incorrect knot on Julia during the act and further arguments of professionalism, showmanship and secrecy arise.Links16:32: “Secret of the Magus”, a New Yorker profile of Ricky JayRecommendationsTim: Burning, (Lee Chang-dong, 2018)  — available on Amazon PrimeTay: Eastern Promises, (David Cronenberg, 2007) — available on Amazon Prime  All links verified at the time of publication and based on availability in Canada.
