It was a humbling opportunity to have Coast Guard, Captain Taylor Lam as the guest on this episode. This podcast is sponsored in part by EPIC-MRA Opinion Research The bargaining between the prosecutors and various Trump-related defendants is ratcheting up, even as Trump's numbers in the GOP nomination race also are moving up. But will Donald Trump even appear on the ballot if there's a Republican presidential primary in Michigan? That question is up in the air with a potential lawsuit challenging Trump's eligibility, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson stuck in the middle of a very sticky and unprecedented legal situation. Also on our agenda this week:  Michigan Democrats are turning up the heat on Republicans over reproductive healthcare rights with a new package of bills aimed at keeping the government out of these decisions.  Courts in two states have thrown out congressional district maps because of Republican gerrymandering. A couple of candidates make it official: Mike Rogers is moving back to Michigan to run for the Senate, and Carl Marlinga is looking for a rematch with John James. We're joined this week by author and Lincoln Project Adviser Stuart Stevens. Stu has worked at the top level of more presidential and senatorial campaigns than just about anyone. His first presidential effort: the Bob Dole campaign in 1996. His book The Big Enchilada is a chronicle of George W. Bush's 2000 campaign. Other campaigns on his resume include Mitt Romney, Governor Haley Barbour, Governor Tom Ridge, Senator Thad Cochran, Senator Dick Lugar, Senator Mel Martínez, Senator Chuck Grassley, Senator Roger Wicker, Senator Jon Kyl, Governor Bill Weld, Governor Paul Cellucci, Governor Bob RileySSS Stevens is also a prolific writer. It Was All A Lie: How The Republican Party Became Donald Trump is his eighth book; his ninth book, The Conspiracy to End America Five Ways comes out October 10. He has also written extensively for dramatic television series, starting with Northern Exposure and including I'll Fly Away, K. It was the campaign of my lifetime. A chance to work for not one but three of my heroes in one year, Bob and Elizabeth Dole and Strom Thurmond.  1996 was a great year. Some people have been critical of the campaign Bob Dole ran in 1996, but I doubt anyone could have done any better. The economy was booming and Bill Clinton was the master of campaigning. But Bob  Dole gave him a run for his money and did something very impressive, in a year clearly trending toward a popular President, he kept him under 50%, and both houses of Congress stayed in Republican control. The work Bob Dole did in California, in districts of congressmen who were in trouble is what saved our majorities. As I remember CNN analyst William Schneider saying, "He helped save the Republican cause even if his own cause fared badly"Bob Dole's character shined throughout the campaign and I learned so much just watching from the sideline on how to act and treat people, how even on the Presidential level, you could still be a thoughtful, considerate candidate and stay true to your principles as a human being. Most importantly, I saw the price of freedom, every time he used his left hand to shake hands or held a pen in his right. Bob Dole said over and over on the campaign trail "I am certainly not Dwight Eisenhower, but I have always been proud of the vote I cast for Eisenhower and you want to be proud of the vote you cast, 10 years, and 20 years and 30 years from now" well I still am proud of the vote I cast for Bob Dole, it is the proudest vote I ever cast. In this episode we shall hear his announcement, his visit to the Greenville Christmas parade, a profile from ABC News just before the Iowa Caucus, and his resignation from Congress. Plus speeches from the most prominent members of the august body in which he served, the United States Senate.  Thad Cochran,  Ted Stevens, Strom Thurmond, Tom Daschle and Robert Byrd all take to the floor to talk about this giant of the Senate they considered it a privileged to have served with.

Hurricane Laura comes ashore, bringing with it high winds and heavy rain. We look at how it could affect Mississippi as it begins it's turn eastward. Then, expungements were a core issue of the Governor's veto of a comprehensive criminal reform bill. We explore why reform advocates feel they should be expanded.Plus, in today's Book Club: A longtime GOP strategist has given up on his party as he details in his book, “It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump.”Segment 1:Hurricane Laura roared ashore along the southwest Louisiana coastline in the early hours of the morning, having intensified to strong Category 4 status with winds reaching 150 miles per hour and a storm surge unprecedented for the area. We're joined by Robert Ricks of the National Weather Service in Slidell.MEMA Director Greg Michel is calling on Mississippians to stay weather aware as Laura tracks inland. He says the storm's path resembles 2005's Hurricane Rita - which brought tornadic activity to the state.Segment 2:When Governor Tate Reeves vetoed a bi-partisan criminal justice reform bill last month, he cited the expanded number of expungements, and the perceived safety concern they presented, as a key factor in his decision. House Bill 658 would have allowed Mississippians to get up to three non-violent felony convictions removed from their record. State law currently allows one felony expungement. Advocates and lawmakers seeking this type of reform say it helps those convicted of felonies get their lives back on track. MPB's Desare Frazier speaks with an expungement recipient, an attorney with the Mississippi Center for Justice, and a lawmaker hoping to bring the bill back.Segment 3:Stuart Stevens has been a staunch Republican for most of his life. A top strategist for Republican presidential candidates George W. Bush and Mitt Romney. The Jackson native helped Haley Barbour, Thad Cochran, and Roger Wicker get elected. But now Stevens has given up on his party because of the GOP's embrace of President Donald Trump. Senator Thad Cochran was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi, on December 7th, 1937. In this episode, he discusses his family’s long history in Mississippi and his parents’ careers in Education. As the son of public school teachers, Cochran was expected to excel in academics, sports and music. He explains how their emphasis on education and hard work made theirs an achievement-oriented family. Even though Cochran’s parents worked hard to provide for their family, money was always scarce. He remembers how they scrimped and took on extra jobs to make sure he and his brother could attend college. Cochran got his first experience in politics when his parents campaigned for various candidates and got him involved, as well. He also recalls his poker-playing grandmother’s run for county supervisor. Mississippi Moments is written and produced by Ross Walton, with narration by Bill Ellison.

MS Elects Hyde-Smith as Next Senator; Pelosi Advances in House Speaker Race

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Mississippi Republican, won the special runoff election yesterday, defeating the Democratic candidate, Mike Espy, who was trying become the state's first black senator since Reconstruction. Hyde-Smith will serve out the final two years of Thad Cochran's term and make history as the first woman elected to Congress from Mississippi. This sets the Republican majority in the Senate chamber at 53 to 47 once the new Congress is sworn in, a net pickup of two seats. Do the results in Mississippi provide any additional information about the American political landscape? If so, what? House Democrats chose their leadership today. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi carried the vote to be the Democrat nominee for House Speaker, the position she previously held from 2007 to 2011, the last time Democrats held a majority in the chamber. In the upcoming January vote, she must win the support of at least 218 House members. Earlier today, nine Democrats from the so-called Problem Solvers Caucus reached an agreement with Pelosi on rules reforms to advance bipartisan legislation. Those members will now support her bid for speaker. The phony left, represented by the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, mouth the right words but then sign on to Pelosi and the rest of the discredited gang. Are Ocasio-Cortez and some of the others engaging in realpolitik or rolling over? Her connection to Bernie Sanders is tainted by his sheep dogging for the Democrats.Opponents of the war in Yemen have picked up momentum heading into a critical Senate vote today on the Yemen amendment, which would end US support for the Saudi-led coalition. In a procedural vote, the Senate voted 55-44 against a similar measure in March, with 10 Democrats voting against it. But five Republicans voted in favor at the time. What's brought about the change in the Senate? The chamber is likely to advance the resolution after several Republicans and Democrats today expressed frustration with the Trump administration for refusing to fully brief lawmakers on Saudi Arabia's war campaign and the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Senators emerging from a closed-door briefing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said they were furious the session did not also include CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom they want to question about the agency's high-confidence assessment that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman orchestrated Khashoggi's murder. Supporters say the measure is a vital step toward Congress reasserting its authority on matters of war after years of ceding such decisions to the president. It would also rebuke Saudi Arabia for its conduct in Yemen – which has sparked what UN officials say is the world's worst humanitarian crisis and led to thousands of civilian deaths.GUESTS:Dr. Joseph Graves — American scientist who serves as associate dean for research and a professor of biological studies at the Joint School for Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, which is jointly administered by North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and UNC Greensboro. Despite the controversy that has roiledhercampaign for the past three weeks, Cindy Hyde-Smith has won the race for Mississippi’s Senate seat, overtaking Democrat Mike Espy, according to NBC News and the New York Times. The victory for Hyde-Smith, who has been serving in the Senate since she was appointed to replace Sen. Thad Cochran in April, was narrower than it might have been under different circumstances. Though her campaign stuck to a classic Mississippi Republican playbook, the candidate was plagued by gaffes, to put it mildly, which led to an underwhelming margin during the special election Tuesday. Civil Conversations with David Baria Podcast

If you pay attention to wacky bills making their way though courthouses around the country, then you should have a particular interest in this episode. Former State Representative Andy Gipson, David's guest on this episode, is responsible for a number of bills that have caused controversy nationwide. From a so-called "personhood" bill to the "bathroom" bill, and from "abuse is no excuse" to "religious freedom" - all the way to this past year's session in which he proposed a bill clarifying the rights of enhanced concealed carry permitters to be able to carry into public spaces like sports stadiums - for Rep Gipson has been the staunchest of conservative voices in a deeply red and  deeply religious state.  Of course, such a man is easy to dismiss from afar as a "nut". up close and personal is quite another story. He is no bumpkin. He was valedictorian of his law school class, and an attorney at a high-powered law office based in Jackson. He is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister with theological training.  In short, Andy is as confounding as he is controversial. A formidable adversary for David in his work at the Capitol, he is also one of only two Republicans willing to have a Civil Convo with David when asked.  If you want to hear two bright men on opposite sides of the political and philosophical spectrums have a talk about the business of politics - then you are in the right place.  NOTE - since this conversation took place, Rep Gipson was rewarded and at the same time cordoned off from the statehouse by Republican leadership when he was chosen to fill the seat of Commissioner of Agriculture vacated when Cindy Hyde Smith was named US Senator by Gov Phil Bryant after Thad Cochran's retirement in mid-2018. Media Credentials Controversy

Veritas News Network - Truth is Trending

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2018 6:01

The rise in citizen journalists and bloggers has resulted in a wave of controversy over the coveted press pass and media credentials. Traditionally, those working in the mainstream media receive a press pass from their employer containing their name and photograph, the name of the media organization and contact person, as well as certification that the employee is an authorized representative of said media organization. Media credentials go a bit further and vary from agency to agency. Some may require a complete background check, others may require only a home address, social security number and a photocopy of a driver’s license, and almost all require the credentialed person be a verifiable member of the mainstream media. Press credentials can get a reporter, photographer, or photojournalists into everything from concerts and major league baseball to the White House and can allow crossing the yellow police tape that seals off the area of a crime or accident scene. Credentials are often needed for entering private space and government functions that are not considered public. While press credentialing is most often a non-issue for media professionals, it is a growing concern for citizen journalists, bloggers, and even non-profit news organizations. Some organizations won’t consider issuing credentials to bloggers and non-profits and others will give consideration to those meeting certain criteria. The Senate Press Galleries, for example, bars non-profit news organizations from membership. It requires that member news organizations be chiefly supported through advertising and subscriber revenue, essentially eliminating non-profits because they are primarily supported through donations. The American Bar Association, however, will consider bloggers and citizen journalists who can authenticate their status. According to the ABA website, “Because of the unique nature of this event, bloggers or other citizen-journalists must represent well-established, law-related or legal technology-related outlets as determined by ABA Media Relations staff.” A credentialed reporter can sometimes cross police lines and have access to interviews with those close to the crime or accident. Non-credentialed reporters do so at their own risk. There has been a growing number of arrests involving citizen bloggers and citizen journalists, and it has spurred a wide national debate over who should qualify for privileged access. While professional journalists are educated in the ethics of the field and are aware of what they can and cannot do, bloggers and citizen journalists with no journalism education or experience can find themselves tangled in lawsuits or tossed in jail. The high-profile “Constitutional Clayton” blogger case is an example of the ethical line being crossed. Several months ago Madison, Mississippi Police arrested Clayton Thomas Kelly, 28, of Pearl, on a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Kelly is accused of allegedly sneaking into St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, where Rose Cochran, wife of U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, has resided since 2000, suffering from progressive dementia. Kelly, a political blogger, posted a video on the Internet that included a picture of Rose Cochran. Three others were also arrested in connection with the case. The case, and others like it, have presented a new problem for the “new media” and the weight of government transparency against breaking the law to get a story. A 2014 study from the Digital Media Law Project at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the Journalist’s Resource Project at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, “Who Gets a Press Pass? Media Credentialing Practices in the United States,” performed a quantitative examination of media credentialing in the United States. It surveyed the experience of more than 1,300 newsgatherers of various kinds throughout the country in their efforts to obtain media credentials from different types of credentialing organizations from 2008 to 2013. According to the survey results, one out of every five respondents who applied for a credential was denied by a credentialing organization at least once. Certain categories of applicants are more likely to be denied than others: freelance journalists were significantly less likely to receive media credentials than employed journalists. Photographers were more likely to be denied than non-photographers. Respondents who identified themselves as activists were more likely to be denied than those respondents who did not. A Google search will return many websites offering press passes and credentials for a fee. Be wary of these offers as chances are they won’t be accepted. And keep in mind that many events require press credentialing directly from the government agency or organization itself and not from the news agency or any online organizations.
