See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Abuse and infidelity. University of Chicago sociologist Linda Waite found that "16 percent of cohabiting women reported that arguments with their partners became physical during the past year, while only 5 percent of married women had similar experiences." Most cohabiting couples have a faithful relationship, but Waite's surveys also demonstrated that 20% of cohabiting women reported having secondary sex partners, compared to only 4% of married women. According to an article by Judith Treas and Deirdre Giesen, cohabiting couples are twice as likely to experience infidelity within the relationship than married couples. Fertility. Regarding cohabitation as a fertility factor, a large survey in the United States came to the result that married women had an average of 1.9 children, compared to 1.3 among those cohabiting. The corresponding numbers for men were 1.7 and 1.1, respectively. The difference of 0.6 children for both sexes was expected to decrease to between 0.2 and 0.3 over the lifetime when correcting for the confounder that married people have their children earlier in life. A study of the United States and multiple countries in Europe came to the result that women who continue to cohabit after birth have significantly lower probability of having a second child than married women in all countries except those in Eastern Europe. Another study, on the contrary, came to the result that cohabiting couples in France have equal fertility as married ones. Also, Russians have a higher fertility within cohabitation, while Romanians rather tend to have childless marriages. Survey data from 2003 in Romania came to the result that marriage equalized the total fertility rate among both highly educated and low educated people to approximately 1.4. Among those cohabiting, on the other hand, a lower level of education increased fertility rate to 1.7, and a higher level of education decreased it to 0.7. On the other hand, another study came to the result that Romanian women with little education have about equal fertility in marital and cohabiting partnerships. Financial effects. In the United States, married couples that submit a combined tax return may face a marriage penalty, where tax credits for low-income single earners are not applied to the combined income. In October 1998, Senate GOP leader Trent Lott decided to pull a bill to abolish "the marriage penalty," "which in the tax code reflects the fact that married couples who both work for wages frequently pay more in taxes than if they earned the same amount of income but weren't married. And the more equal the incomes of the couple, the steeper the marriage tax penalty." The earned income tax credit (EITC) is cash welfare for low-income workers, but the problem is the EITC is not for married couples because they have to combine their wages, which again leads to "the marriage penalty." If couples do not get married then their wages do not have to combine and the EITC in a way is "paying for" low-income couples not to marry. Opponents of cohabitation believe that some cohabiting couples choose not to marry because they would suffer a tax penalty. Despite the perceived disincentive to marry that the EITC provides, cohabiting couples suffer many financial losses as their unions are not recognized with the same legal and financial benefits as those who are legally married. These financial penalties can include the costs of separate insurance policies and the costs of setting up legal protections similar to those that are automatically granted by the state upon marriage. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

In this episode we examine the Legacy of Watergate. It was the one question everyone was asked by historian Timothy Naftali and the answers were fascinating. This is a study of what each person thought the lesson of Watergate is for history. The one that caught the most interest from me was that of Bernard Nussbaum, who was the second in command on the staff of the House Judiciary Committee. He calls the Special Prosecutor's Office " a dangerous, dangerous office."He runs through all the ways this office can be abused and how President Nixon and his friend President Bill Clinton should never have allowed the office to have been created in either of their cases. While Nussbaum pays token defenses of the Watergate Special Prosecutor's Office it is clear that he holds the institution in fairly low regard and in every point he makes we are in agreement. His warning is one every President and leader needs to heed. There is no reason the office should ever exist again, in my opinion. Former Senator Trent Lott also makes a valid point too about what happens when a person gets in trouble and how the price they pay can be very different depending on which political party they are a member of when it happens. Here is the Legacy of Watergate, including my opinion, which is its unfairness to President Nixon and the battles over the war in Vietnam planted the seeds of the disfunction in politics we see today Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!
This episode opens with President Richard Nixon's March 1974 visit to the Grand Ole Opry. Nixon was there to open the brand new Opry House on its first night after moving from downtown Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. It is a symbol of the one section of the country that never wavered, as President Nixon's problems mounted. In the South, we don't cut and run, especially when it is a President that stood strong during war time as this President had done. Unfortunately, the public support was not translating to the Judiciary Committee's three influential Democratic Congressmen Representatives Walter Flowers of Alabama, Ray Thornton of Arkansas, and Jim Mann of my home state of South Carolina. They were moving toward impeachment, undercutting the President's support in their states delegations. President Nixon sensing the momentum shifting away from him, reached out to Governor George Wallace of Alabama to see if he could not help him sway Walter Flowers, when Wallace refused, it was the moment President Nixon knew this fight was lost. He would lose the southern firewall that stood between himself and Impeachment. The President was also having trouble holding his Republicans together as Representatives William Cohen, Tom Railsback, W. Caldwell Butler, and Lawrence Hogan had decided to side with the democrats. As we listen in on the debate in this episode, you will hear these men, as some struggle to vote their conscience, and some make their decision in matter of fact fashion. You will get to hear the moments of high drama and one speech that has been an enormous part of the history of the moment from Representative Barbara Jordan of Texas. Jordan's speech contained many charges, most notably was that of Howard Hunt faking cables to embarrass the Kennedy Administration and involvement in the overthrow of the South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem. While that charge of Hunt faking cables tying Kennedy personally to the assassination of Diem was faked, it was faked by a man who, as a member of the CIA, had seen the real ones that had tied Kennedy to the overthrow of the Diem Government. A fact hidden from the public and Barbara Jorden for years afterwards. This is but one of many examples of charges made that with time, unsealed documents, and an explosive set of Church Hearings in the United States Senate would later be proven untrue. All to late for Watergate and Richard Nixon. But the President did have defenders, Representatives Charlie Wiggins of California and Charlie Sandman of New Jersey. The case they made has, in reality, stood the test of time and you will hear it in this episode too. Plus we will dismantle the mythology of the Watergate debate that the defense case was dismantled by a hearing full of specific accusations concerning the President that overwhelmed his defenders and that President Nixon's attorney, James St. Claire, was actually able to perform a real defense of the President. Neither was true and you will hear it here for yourself. This episode is an in-depth look at the House Judiciary committee itself as they went through the work of deciding whether or not they should impeach a President of the United States for high crimes and misdemeanors for the first time in 106 years. In this show you will hear the memories of each of the members and staffers of the committee we selected. They will go in-depth to recall the procedures they followed, their own feelings upon hearing the tapes, their own judgements, the work ethic of the staff and members and their thoughts about Watergate all these many years later. Of particular interests will be the oral history segments of Bernard Nussbaum and his assessment of both John Dean, the star witness and the former Counsel to the President , and of John Mitchell the former Attorney General and head of the Re-Election campaign for President Nixon. He says at one point that he found John Dean "the perfect Nazi corporal" who would mirror the opinion and thoughts of the person who had power over him at any given point. It is a startling revelation as to what this member of the staff thought of the main witness against the sitting President. Nussbaum also says that this issue of mirrorring the powerful person in the room made him watch what he said "out of fear of putting words in his mouth" and " while some prosecutors will do that , that is not what I do". It will make your jaw drop. We also will hear from President Richard Nixon, in an interview conducted by his former aid Frank Gannon from 1983, in which the President will lay out his version of several of the lesser remembered accusations of the Watergate years: his taxes, the improvements to his homes, the accusations of enriching himself etc.. If you listen with an open mind it will certainly cause you to question a lot of the claims made by his accusers. Then we let Geoff Shepard lay out the articles of impeachment that are to be drafted by the House Committee after they had reviewed the overwhelming evidence they had in their hands. Evidence, in our opinion, tainted by the decision of John Doar, the lead House Staffer, to only collate the evidence provided by the Watergate Special Prosecution Task Force and the Watergate Senate Committee. In this episode we cover the opening day of the Impeachment Hearing of the House Judiciary Committee. We listen to staffers of the committee and a couple of the committee members as they discuss the way the committee operated and the issues they faced as they moved forward to really look at the events. You will also hear from the members of a quiet coalition of southern Democrats all of whom are struggling between their feelings of loyalty to both a President and a constituency that is counting on them to do the right thing, and the overwhelming nature of the evidence that is in front of them. This evidence totally coming from two sources, the Senate Watergate Committee staffed with partisan Democrats put together by Senator Ted Kennedy's office, and the Rabid Watergate Special Prosecutor's Office. None of those facts was known at the time this debate raged by this set of politicians tasked with making the final judgement as to whether to impeach the President As all of this pressure continues to build we will look into the toll it is taking on the President's mental health. Just how well was Richard Nixon coping with the disintegration of his Administration. There are various rumors circulating that it was not to well. Yet, other staffers such as Alexander Haig and Ray Price take issue with those reports. We will hear from various people who witnessed the President up-close as all of this was unfolding. Then we close out the episode hearing from the man himself, President Richard Nixon. In 1983, just nine years after these events transpired, then Former President Richard Nixon sat down with his former staffer Frank Gannon for an in-depth, non adversarial, much more relaxed, set of interviews. We will be sharing portions from those interviews in our remaining broadcasts. They will provide you with some extraordinary insights from what the President was thinking in these final months of his administration. “He knew how pain kept inside multiplies, and how pain shared subtracts,” writes podcast guest Jon Sternfeld in the opening bars of Michael K. Williams's haunting new posthumous memoir Scenes from My Life. Jon was midway through his work with the electrifying actor, known to television audiences for his career-defining turns as Omar Little in “The Wire” and Chalky White in “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as for his Emmy-nominated roles in “The Night Of” and “Lovecraft Country,” when Williams died in September 2021 from a drug overdose. It fell to Jon to complete the project on his own—an intimidating task the veteran ghostwriter was reluctant to take on at first. “I can't tell you how strange this is and has been,” he says. “When Mike first passed, I was just dealing with the shock and grief. I wasn't even thinking about things like deadlines or promotion. And now, I'm speaking about his legacy, and while I feel outmatched by the responsibility of it, I do accept it.” Join us as Jon Sternfeld reflects on his relationship with the late actor and activist, as well as on his other collaborations, including A Stone of Hope, with the noted residential care advocate Jim St. Germain; Crisis Point, with former U.S. senators Trent Lott and Tom Daschle; and the forthcoming Marked For Life, with attorney Isaac Wright Jr., who defends the wrongly accused in the same courtroom where he was sentenced to life in prison. In this episode we listen as the House Judiciary Committee sets up shop to start their look into the impeachment of Richard Nixon. You will hear from Bernard Nussbaum as he talks about the decision by John Doar not to aggressively investigate the facts of the case instead deciding they would collate the evidence already gathered by the Senate Watergate Committee and the Special Prosecutor's office. A decision that Nussbaum violently opposed at the time but in these interviews tries to put the best face on for the oral history he is providing. He even goes so far as to say it was most likely the biggest factor in getting to the result that eventually happened. You will hear Hillary Rodham Clinton discuss the system for organizing material they came up with based on how Doar ran his law practice. The three areas that they all worked on included just trying to figure out how an impeachment would work, what were the grounds for determining a high crime and misdemeanor, and just what exactly were the facts as they knew them. It is a fascinating look at how the committee was run and you will hear how the congressmen were babysat through the process, with little black books, kept under lock and key, that staffers would go through the evidence with the congressmen, given to them by the WSPF, let them ask questions and go through books only under the direct supervision of staff with all the materials going safely back into custody after they were done researching it all for the current session. It was all a very controlled environment, for secrecy's sake, or at least that is what we have been led to believe. Then we go through the scenario that led to the request by the Special Prosecutor's office for 64 more taped conversations. The President refused to hand them over, deciding instead to give edited transcripts, to be released simultaneously, to the Prosecutors, the House Committee and the public. That decision would eventually lead to the legal fight in the Supreme Court known as the United States vs Richard Nixon. Then the President addressed the nation. If ever a case of being caught telling the truth has existed then this speech by President Nixon is it. We just did not have any way of knowing it then, but we do now. If you go back to our first four tape series episodes and listen to the "Cancer on the Presidency" conversation with John Dean, the White House Counsel, ( episode 137 - Tape series part 1) or the conversations with Assistant Attorney General Henry Petersen ( episode 139 - Tape series part 3) every single assertion in his defense made by President Nixon in this April 1974 speech turned out to be true. Go listen to it all for yourself. In this episode we are going to introduce you to a new set of players in the saga of the fall of Richard Nixon. These are the members of the House Judiciary Committee and its staff. We chose five of them. Representatives Elizabeth Holtzman D-New York and Trent Lott R-Mississippi, two people at the very start of their long and illustrious careers. We also chose three members of the staff, Hillary Rodham Clinton and William Weld, who were young staffers and the number two man on the staff Bernard Nussbaum. It is Bernard Nussbaum whose oral history is of the most interest throughout the rest of our series. He is blunt in his assessment of the office of Special Prosecutor even as he attempts to defend the job that they all did in 1974. He calls it a dangerous office. He also points out often that Doar overruled him in his view that a thorough investigation needed to be conducted by their office rather than just relying on the information and evidence gathered by the Senate Watergate Committee and the Watergate Special Prosecutor's office. However, in this episode, we will just introduce them all to you and how they got in the places they were when the scandal landed on their doorstep in March of 1974. I will tell you that of all the various entities involved in the horrible travesty of justice known as Watergate (Here I am editorializing again) my opinion of these people, with the exception of William Weld, changed the most dramatically for the better of any of the research I conducted. This is their story with a few funny side stories too. Like how sliming salmon prepared Hillary Rodham Clinton for her long career in politics. In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, it became clear that the Electoral Count Act of 1887, the legislation that provides the framework governing the casting and counting of electoral votes, needed updating because of its arcane language and ambiguities that could be exploited by bad actors willing to overturn the will of the peopleIn stepped a bipartisan group of senators, and, after months of negotiating, a deal was struck. Last month, the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act was introduced by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) along with eight other Republican cosponsors and seven Democratic cosponsors, to update the antiquated Electoral Count Act of 1887.On this special episode of Swamp Stories, Weston spoke with former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) about the bipartisan group of senators that helped drive the effort, the implications for public confidence in our system, and why the bill needs to pass this year.Want to learn even more about the Electoral Count Act of 1887 and why it needs to be updated? The Fall of the House of Zeus tells the story of Dickie Scruggs, arguably the most successful plaintiff's lawyer in America. A brother-in-law of Trent Lott, the former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Scruggs made a fortune taking on mass tort lawsuits against “Big Tobacco” and the asbestos industries. He was hailed by Newsweek as a latter-day Robin Hood, and portrayed in the movie, The Insider, as a dapper aviator-lawyer. Scruggs' legal triumphs rewarded him lavishly, and his success emboldened both his career maneuvering and his influence in Southern politics–but at a terrible cost, culminating in his spectacular fall, when he was convicted for conspiring to bribe a Mississippi state judge. “Listen, kids are resilient, we all know that, but what happened to us when we grew up? We’re a trainwreck and we’re a dumpster fire by the time we become adults. You know we all intrinsically have resilience, but we lose it along the way somewhere.” - Andrew Wittman Parenting can be extremely difficult, and today’s amazing Finding Brave guest reveals the tools required to master resilience in parenting. Not only does it take mental toughness, critical thinking and emotional intelligence, but an incredible amount of inner work and true acceptance of oneself is needed in order for someone to be the best parent her or she can be. Dr. Andrew Wittman is a United States Marine Corps infantry combat veteran, a former Police Officer and Federal Agent. As a Special Agent for the U.S. Capitol Police, he led the security detail for Nancy Pelosi and has personally protected Hillary Clinton, Tom Delay, Trent Lott, King Abdullah of Jordan, Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, Sir Elton John, as well as Fortune 20 CEOs. As a security contractor for the State Department, he taught high-threat diplomatic security to former Navy SEALS, Marines, Rangers, and Special Forces. He is founder of the Mental Toughness Training Center, a leadership consultancy specializing in peak performance, team dynamics, resolving conflict in the workplace and is the author of the books, Ground Zero Leadership: CEO of You (2016) and Seven Secrets of Resilience for Parents” (2018). He holds a Ph.D. in Theological Studies, is a guest lecturer at Clemson University and co-hosts the radio call-in show “Get Warrior Tough." Andrew is an embodiment of mental resilience and strength, but there’s also a vulnerability and accessibility in him that I believe isn’t seen often in other leaders of his stature working in the area that he specializes in. His message is timely and one that is needed today though, because if you can find a way to love and accept yourself, thoroughly, no matter what, you will become a better parent and a better leader and make a positive difference in the world. Trent Lott was elected to the House of Representatives in 1972, and to the Senate in 1989, and operated inside the House and Senate at a time when bipartisan cooperation was more common. By the time he became Senate Majority Leader in 1996, however, Republicans were becoming more confrontational. I talked with Lott about growing up in the Deep South during Jim Crow, and about the controversy surrounding Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam over his wearing of blackface during medical school. Lott lost his job as the Republican leader in the Senate because of comments praising Sen. Strom Thurmond and lamenting that country would have been better off if Thurmond, a segregationist for much of his career, had become president. Looking toward 2020, Lott predicted that as of now, President Trump is in a strong position to win reelection. Only former Vice President Joe Biden, Lott said, would pose a threat. Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta is rather boring as the New England Patriots and Tom Brady capture their sixth world title. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam steps on a blackface landmine; and he's now repelling overwhelming calls for resignation. Jerry Short connects this latest political blunder to Trent Lott's fall from grace in 2002. And Walmart is changing its sick leave policy for employees.

Is there hope for the Republican party after Donald Trump is gone? Longtime black conservative Robert George isn't so sure. George was an early "canary in the coal mine," warning about problems with the GOP all the way back to Trent Lott (who he publicly called on to step down) and George W. Bush (whose re-election he opposed). In today's podcast, we delve into the history of the Republican party that led us to this point, and whether the GOP can be saved. The great thing about Emmy-winning filmmakers Alex Gibney and Blair Foster’s new six part docuseries The Clinton Affair is that it allows a new generation to savor the incredible gallery of aggrieved accusers, legal hounds and partisan furies who tore apart the body politic in the '90s. We see them all anew, from mealy-mouthed special prosecutor Ken Starr to treacherous political harridan Linda Tripp to surprising good guy Trent Lott. Most surprising of all is the new perspective of now 45-year-old Monica Lewinsky, liberated from the vengeful hypocrisies of the past. In this interview, Gibney and Foster talk with Tina Brown about what the public never knew about the Starr investigation, how Bill Clinton’s charisma insulated him from the ultimate political punishment, and why opening up about that period of her life may have finally set Monica Lewinsky free.Tweet me @tinabrownlm #TBDwithTinaBrown and if you liked this episode, please rate, review and subscribe, it helps us spread the word.

U.S. Senate majority leader makes racist comments, leading to resignation. At a time when Republicans controlled the White House, Senate and House of Representatives, it seemed that Senate majority leader Trent Lott was as close to the top of his game as most people could get. However, on December 5, 2002, while celebrating the 100th birthday of his fellow-Senator Strom Thurmond, Lott made comments that would force him to resign. Thurmond had run for president in 1948 on a segregationist ticket – indicating his desire to keep blacks and whites separate and certainly not equal. At the birthday party, Lott boasted that his state, Mississippi, had voted for Lott back in ’48. “We’re proud of it, and if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years,” he said, clearly referring to problems that arose from integration. While it was not the first time Lott had made racist comments, this time the outrage came fast and furiously – and it stuck. For two weeks, Lott went on every television and radio show that would have him, apologizing and trying to explain. However, even President George W. Bush had harsh words for the senator, and his colleagues were not willing to back him this time. On December 20, 2002, Lott announced he was stepping down from the majority leader’s chair, although he stayed on as senator. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our guest this week is former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott. We went back to several of the most interesting conversations T. Boone Pickens had for the Pickens Podcast series in 2016 and distilled those visits to our discussions of PEOTUS Donald J. Trump. This "greatest hits" episode features Laura Ingraham, Steve Forbes, Carl Icahn, Tom Daschle & Trent Lott, and Haley Barbour. You'll find these conversations fascinating during this Inauguration Season.
Why has the U.S. Senate gone from the world’s greatest deliberative body to the country’s most dysfunctional political institution? The answer is complicated – perpetual campaigns, vast money, excess partisanship – but Senate history points a way to a more productive Senate. Historians of the Senate Richard Baker and Ira Shapiro consider the Senate of the 1960s and 1970s when things worked much better, former leader Trent Lott offers advice to the Senate leadership and former Montana Congressman Pat Williams remembers the Senate’s greatest majority leader – Mike Mansfield.
Senator Trent Lott represented the people of Mississippi in Congress for 35 years and is one of a handful of officials to have held elected leadership positions in both the House of Representatives and Senate. During his 16 years in the House and 19 years in the Senate, he worked closely with seven presidential administrations and was regarded as a savvy coalition builder and deal maker. He was the former Senate Majority Leader, Senate Republican Whip and House Republican Whip. Senator Lott joined the House in 1973, representing Mississippi’s Fifth Congressional District. From 1981 to 1989 he served as House Minority Whip, the second-ranking Republican in the House. In that position he forged the bipartisan alliance that enacted Ronald Reagan’s economic recovery program and national security initiatives. He also founded the House’s first modern whip organization with a focus on regular member-to-member contacts and extensive outreach to sympathetic Democrats to secure passage of major legislation. In 1988 Senator Lott was elected to the Senate where he was a member of a group of pro-growth stalwarts who opposed the tax increase forced on President Bush in 1990. He became the Senate’s 16th Majority Leader in 1996 and, along with Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, was instrumental in the passing of the historic welfare reform bill of 1996. The next year Senator Lott worked with Gingrich and congressional Budget Committee chairmen John Kasich and Pete Domenici to produce a landmark budget and tax cut agreement that limited some federal spending while, more importantly, stimulating the economic growth that brought the federal budget into balance for the first time since 1968. As the Republican leader in the Senate during the first two years of President George W. Bush’s administration, Senator Lott led the fight for passage of the President’s tax cut package, the President’s historic education reform bill, the largest increase in defense spending since the Cold War, the most significant trade legislation in a decade, and the resolution supporting the President of military action in Iraq. Senator Lott later helped to reach the compromises leading to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. In 2006 Senator Lott was elected Senate Republican Whip, giving him the distinction of being the only person to hold that position in both the House and Senate. Today Senator Lott co-chairs the Public Policy practice and provides strategic advice at Squire Patton Boggs, consulting and lobbying clients on a wide range of public policy matters, including defense and homeland security, tax and financial services, energy, transportation and communications. Senator Lott and fellow former Senator John Breaux founded the Breaux-Lott Leadership Group, a bipartisan public policy firm that quickly became one of the 20 largest government relations firms in Washington.
This week’s Pickens Podcast features two men who served as Majority Leaders of the United States Senate: Trent Lott (R) and Tom Daschle (D). They spoke with T. Boone Pickens about what’s right and what’s wrong with politics and governing in the United States today. The two long-time political opponents have written a book called “Crisis Point” about what’s wrong with the system and how to fix it. “There is nothing new about how difficult it is to govern in America,” they told Boone. “It’s been going on since the beginning of the country.”
Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott chats with David about his upbringing in Mississippi, his cheerleading days at Ole Miss, his concerns with the historic gridlock seen today in Congress, and his opinions on the ongoing Supreme Court confirmation debate and the GOP presidential primary.
For 10 years The Senate Majority Leader office traded hands between Senators Tom Daschel (Democrat) and Trent Lott (Republican). As the leaders of their respective parties in the U.S. Senate, Senator Lott and Senator Daschle often found themselves on opposite sides of an issue, but they kept things moving in the Senate and got things done for the American people by working together, showing mutual respect, and engaging in that four letter word-compromise. Today they say that politics is getting so ugly and divisive that has nearly stalled the legislative process, because no one is willing to reach across the aisle and find common ground. They write about it in their new book, CRISIS POINT: WHY WE MUST - AND HOW WE CAN - OVERCOME OUR BROKEN POLITICS IN WASHINGTON AND ACROSS AMERICA. Today they come on the show to talk about it and offer solutions to fix the rancorous partisan divide and get Congress moving again.
