I sat down with 2 of 5 girls who found each other through being r*ped by the same man. They came together to put him behind bars, but the story is mental and horrific in equal measures. From the act's themselves, to dealing with the police, judicial system, and going public. I can't thank the girls enough for their bravery and willingness to chat around the subject. We must educate men, and young men, even better.

English trio London Grammar combine sparse electronic pop in the model of the xx with lead singer Hannah Reid's dramatic, soulful vocals evoking Annie Lennox and contemporaries like Florence Welch and Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes. Hear the Rbr.music team chat about their 2021 third album Californian Soil.
A suivre !
Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry, US indie star Bartees Strange, Ellie Rowsell of Mercury Prize winners Wolf Alice and London Grammar's Hannah Reid discuss writing routines, throwing laptops across the room, falling between musical worlds, why polarising art is the best, and the realities of touring. Lauren Mayberry fronts Scottish band Chvrches. Their glittering career has seen them release four albums, tour with Two Door Cinema Club, Depeche Mode and Passion Pit, and collaborate with the likes of Marshmello, The National, Paramore, Death Cab For Cutie, and The Cure's Robert Smith. Ellie Rowsell is the vocalist and guitarist with British rock band Wolf Alice, whose 2017 album Visions of a Life won the Mercury Prize; their latest album Blue Weekend came out earlier this year. Hannah Reid is a singer and songwriter best known for her hypnotic vocals in pop band London Grammar. They released their debut album If You Wait in 2013, which turned them into one of the most popular bands in the UK. Bartees Strange is a producer and songwriter whose sound blurs genre and boundary. During the mid-2010s, he was a member of New York post-hardcore band Stay Inside, before embarking on a career as a solo artist in 2017 with the debut EP Magic Boy. He had his breakthrough moment in 2020 with the Say Goodbye To Pretty Boy EP, and he's remixed tracks for the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Illuminati Hotties.
Ahead of London Grammar headlining All Points East festival, frontwoman Hannah Reid sat down with Kathleen and Eleanor to chat through the songs that have soundtracked her highs and lows, tracing her journey from the band forming at Nottingham University before going to No1, to dropping out of a world tour after suffering from burnout. Hannah spoke powerfully about her experiences of sexism in the music business (from getting her lyrics called "vacuous" by critics to being dismissed as "irrational"), as well as the problematic adoration of the complicated male genius and how macho culture can also corrode men in the music business as well as women. Straight Up also drilled into why some male critics write about women's music so patronisingly, and how Hannah felt pressured to desexualise her image to be taken seriously. Plus, Hannah revealed what she blew one of her first paycheques on, the one person she stalks religiously from the London Grammar Instagram account and the career she secretly fantasises about if she ever calls it quits on music. After more than a decade of functioning as a democracy, Hannah Reid has stepped into the offical role of band leader in London Grammar. And her bandmates Dot Major and Dan Rothman are happy for her to steer the ship on a more female-centric course, for their latest album Californian Soil. It's a more direct album than their previous work, unafraid to show strength but also be vulnerable. Here are the links to "I'll Be Rooting For You," "Missing," "Californian Soil," and "America"—make sure you listen to them as they are discussed in some detail the episode. 'WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT STORM?'... One night Hannah very kindly popped round to my place and we recorded this conversation. We talked about the whirlwind experience of London Grammar’s first record and the effect this had on the band. At one point Hannah used the phrase ‘the perfect storm’ and it really stuck with me. This is an unpredictable industry and there’s nothing quite like two and half years of world touring to test you. A calm and insightful look into the highs and lows of music and creativity.
