Listening to the tidal wave in “Giant Peach,” the riotous “Moaning Lisa Smile,” or the punked-up “Play the Greatest Hits,” it's hard to imagine Wolf Alice as an acoustic duo. Then talk to Joff Oddie about his integral use of effects—“These pedals can do such crazy things; to not do crazy things with things that can do crazy things seems odd”—and the band's origin story becomes even more improbable. But it's true: Wolf Alice started with guitarist/singer Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Oddie playing acoustic-folk music during open-mic nights in North London pubs. After self-releasing an EP, they expanded and electrified their sound with the help of Theo Ellis (bass/synths) and Joel Amey (drums/synths). Now sure, plenty of the band's repertoire from their four official releases stays in the quieter, softer settings—creating maximum drama—but Joff and the gang give some animation to nearly every note played. (To give further cred to the group's juxtaposition of floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee, in a https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/wolf-alices-joff-oddie-pop-goes-boom (2015 PG interview) Oddie cited John Fahey and Sonic Youth as two of his biggest influences.) “On Blue Weekend, we leaned into our past quite a bit, where we layered up sounds with acoustic instruments. We used loads of 12-strings, banjos, resonators, and tenor guitars,” Oddie says about the band's recent release. “We're even performing an acoustic fingerstyle number—‘Safe From Heartbreak (if you never fall in love)'—each night, so it's nice to get back there.” Before Wolf Alice's sold-out show at Nashville's Cannery Ballroom, guitarist Oddie shared an hour with PG's Chris Kies. The resulting conversation covered the cathartic process of building his first guitar during lockdown (a Jaguar-Jazzmaster hybrid) and why he switched to a pair of Fenders that are “a big sheet of paper that you can paint on.” Plus, he illustrates how every moment in a Wolf Alice set has a pedal, and those moments are unique and not repeated. They're also one of the most acclaimed: The North London group's 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool -- which highlighted the delicacy and ferocity of Ellie Rowsell's vocals and lyrics -- counted Grammy Award and Mercury Prize nominations among its many accolades. The band won the Mercury Prize for 2017's Visions of a Life, an album that added more elements, as well as more polish, to their music, and on 2021's anthemic yet atmospheric Blue Weekend, Wolf Alice's ambitions and horizons continued to grow. Wolf Alice formed in 2010, when singer/songwriter Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie began playing as an acoustic duo and took their name from a short story by Angela Carter. After issuing a self-titled EP, the group expanded into a quartet with the addition of drummer Joel Amey and bassist Theo Ellis. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Mark and Brendan play bits of new singles from England's audiobooks (Yes, that is a band name) plus a fab new club track from Iceland's GusGus (yes, the "Ladyshave" band, if you recall 1999.) Scotland's Koreless is our next track, also on an electronic vibe, followed by a great new tune from the London guitar band Wolf Alice, and their much lauded new record Blue Weekend.  Then Mark digs deep for an archive track from the 1980s Postcard Records band Josef K, with "Sorry For Laughing." (This one has a fun bonus, as Brendan first heard that song as a cover version, on Propaganda's 1985 LP A Secret Wish., which is a perfect '80s record according to him.) (Produced by Trevor Horn!)Plus, as always, we preview the six tracks that we two have chosen for bonus reviews in our e-mail newsletter. English alternative rock band Wolf Alice burst on the scene with their debut album 'My Love Is Cool' in 2015 and they haven't look back since. Their second album 'Visions of a Life' (2017) received universal acclaim and was considered to be one of the best albums of that year.  The band's recently released third album 'Blue Weekend' came in at the top spot on the UK charts,  as their sound continues to expand. We spoke with vocalist Ellie Rowsell and drummer Joel Amey about the new album, bonding at an Airbnb, giving their songs the "campfire test", gaining confidence in the writing process, Ellie's lyrics, the importance of the live aspect of what they do, and a lot more! By: Robin HignellSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/FaceCulture)

Total Control - Her Majesty, Budgie (00:23) King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - O.N.E. The Last Man On Earth”.
