Steven and Ian open this week's episode by talking about pontoon boats -- Steven was on one this week, and he listened to Steve Winwood's "Back In The High Life Again" on a loop. Ian shares his own pontoon story about someone named Uncle Zippy (2:05). After a brief look at the Fantasy Albums Draft (5:05) -- Steven has records from Sabrina Carpenter, The Spirit Of The Beehive, and Illuminati Hotties out this week -- they talk about a recent article charting the pop culture events of the Obamacore era. Steven asks Ian for his take on artists like Tune-Yards, Chance The Rapper, and Run The Jewels -- are they Obamacore? What is Obamacore, anyway (14:47)?After that, they talk about Romance, the new album from Irish rock band Fontaines DC. Is this the record that finally gets the guys on board with a band they are otherwise indifferent about? (It is for one of them!) (36:10). In the mailbag, a listener corrects some misinformation about a recent Ween concert (46:35). Steven and Ian also answer an email about driving long distances to concerts when you live in a small town. (They also discover the Canadian hardcore band Dayglo Abortions, for better or worse.) (48:39)In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the latest from Magdalena Bay while Steven stumps for BBsitters Club (56:38).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. In a powerful blend of cooling indie-rock with Illuminati Hotties, Sarah Tudzin is a producer with a laundry list of excellent credits. Winning a GRAMMY with her production work on Boygenius' The Record, and working with Weyes Blood and Cloud Nothings over the years, Sarah worked on borrowed studio time and bedroom setups for years. Illuminati Hotties' new album POWER is out this Friday on Hopeless. Our guest today is the incredibly talented Sarah Tudzin, the creative force behind the indie rock band Illuminati Hotties. This week, Sarah is set to release Power, the long-awaited third studio album under the band name—her first in over three years. During this time, she's experienced personal highs and lows, including the loss of a family member, finding new love, and winning Grammy awards with boygenius, all of which shaped this standout record. In today's episode, we dive into the making of Power and discuss how Sarah managed to write it amidst life's challenges. We also explore her early music journey, her path into production, and share some of our favorite tracks from the album—plus how these songs will come to life on stage.Illuminati Hotties: Instagram / SpotifyPurchase Power here.Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials. This week we're happy to have Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties on the show to talk about her (approximately) 4-5 year old pit bull mix Maeby and her partner's pup Zeus who's a 9 year old German Shepherd mix. Besides steering the ship for Illuminati Hotties, Sarah is also a producer and engineer who's worked with Speedy Ortiz, Sir Chloe and Boy Genius's The Record which, as of this writing, is up for three Grammy Awards. Sarah elected to give a shout out to local SPCA's everywhere who are always looking for volunteers, fosters and of course adopters. Her local SPCA in Los Angles is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals through education, law enforcement, intervention and advocacy. To learn more visit spcala.com For more pics and clips of Sarah, Maeby and Zeus follow us on Instagram.
You get two for one in this episode with Eliza McLamb and Sarah Tudzin! Both are songwriters: McLamb's debut album Going Through It is out now, and Tudzin is the founder and frontperson for Illuminati Hotties. We're here this week because Tudzin also produced McLamb's album. But you may also know McLamb as the co-host of the Binchtopia podcast, and I have a feeling you'll be hearing Tudzin's name a couple of times on February 4 because she has three GRAMMY nominations for her work on the boygenius album.
Gender equity in the music industry still has a long way to go. The University of Southern California has been studying inclusion in the recording studio for years. In 2018, it found that out of the songs that made it on Billboard's year end Hot 100 chart, along with the nominees in top Grammy categories, only 2% of those songs were produced by women. That number only increased to 3.4% in 2022. On this episode, we revisit a story we first aired in 2019. It's by Contributor Celine Teo-Blockey, who reported on the challenges that Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties has overcome to become a musician and producer. https://www.kexp.org/read/2019/11/5/sound-vision-why-only-2-music-producers-are-women/ Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Speedy Ortiz - "You S02," from the 2023 album Rabbit Rabbit on Wax Nine Records On today's Song of the Day, Speedy Ortiz songwriter Sadie Dupuis finds inspiration in season 2 of the Netflix series You. She explains in a press statement: "Mostly when I've met my musical heroes, they're kind and principled people. But occasionally someone whose work I love(d) reveals themselves to be anti-union, or anti-'woke,' or some other gear-grinding ugliness. That's who I wrote ‘You S02' about, the song's frenzied guitar and synth solos mirroring the crazymaking intensity wafting off people who act like that. In the TV show You's second season, the main character moves from New York to LA in hopes of a fresh start, but (spoiler) remains a murdering psychopath. Changing cities won't make you a hero if you still treat others badly." The track can be found on the band's fourth LP (and first new one in five years), Rabbit Rabbit, out now via Wax Nine. The album was co-produced by the band and Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of artists who got to know each other over the course of the pandemic, and who got together in the same room for this chat—which is still kind of a rarity these days: Sarah Tudzin and Alex Lahey. Sarah Tudzin is best known as the mastermind behind Illuminati Hotties, the band she started as sort of an extension of her production and engineering work, which includes contributions to albums and songs by Boygenius, the Armed, and Eliza McLamb. As Illuminati Hotties, she creates pointed, sometimes funny, always catchy songs that she once described as “tenderpunk,” which is kind of perfect. Check out a little bit of “freequent letdown” from Illuminati Hotties' 2020 release Free I.H., an album/mixtape that comes with an interesting backstory you can find online. New music is supposedly forthcoming pretty soon, so keep your ears open for that. Alex Lahey was born and raised an ocean away from Tudzin, in Australia, but she's been spending a lot more time in Los Angeles recently, as you'll hear in this chat. Lahey has been releasing great records since 2016, and her latest set of punky, animated break-up anthems, called The Answer Is Always Yes, is actually being re-released in an expanded edition with some bonus tracks next week. Check out the ultra-catchy “On the Way Down” right here. These two chat about the philosophy behind Lahey's album title, The Answer is Always Yes, as well as thinking about whether a creative career beyond music makes sense. They talk about the relatively unpopularity of guitar music at the moment, and speculate whether either of their songs might someday get crazy big. (For the record, I don't think it's much of a stretch at all.) Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Alex Lahey and Sarah Tudzin for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all of the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

I'm joined by Anna Arboles and eventually Sapphire Jewell of the band Gypsum. Anna and I get the ball rolling and then we start over once Sapphire joins us. Gypsum is an interesting band with a great sound. The core of the band met in music school at USC. The entire project started as an informal jam session. The core of the band is made up of the musicians that would consistently show up to the sessions, Sapphire, Anna, and drummer Jessy Reed. They came up with the name while exploring the Natural History Museum near campus. And although the band has been around since 2016, they've just recently released their debut album. Anna has been busy crafting the sound for other bands and Sapphire has been playing guitar for Cuffed Up and Illuminati Hotties. You'd think that waiting so long to record and release their debut, they would be tempted to through everything and the kitchen sink onto the album. But you'd be wrong. The album is a close representation of their live sound, showing tremendous restraint in the studio. Their self titled album has just come out on vinyl, so pick that up. They'll even send a CD if you ask really nicely. Give them a follow on Instagram @gypsum_ or on Facebook. Give us a follow @PerformanceAnx on social media. This may be the final measles update for this season: The city Health Department declared the Brooklyn outbreak over as of September 3rd. During the outbreak, 33,805 doses of the MMR vaccine were administered to people younger than 19 years old in Williamsburg and Boro Park, and the 2018 to 2019 outbreak involved 654 confirmed cases. Numerous others who were unvaccinated received vaccinations from other health professionals. Although the increased vaccination rates will help prevent transmission if the disease appears again, it's important to make sure newborn children receive their vaccinations on schedule, which involves two separate doses of the vaccine. Nearly all the infections during the outbreak were in children under 18 years old. For more information on city resources, call 311 or visit the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. As a result of the New York outbreak, the World Health Organization may now rescind the measles elimination status of the United States, which has been in place since the year 2000. It's been one year since Emirates flight 203 from Dubai landed at JFK after passengers reported feeling sick. On-board the plane, people were posting to social media, describing a group who seemed to all know each other, and all of who had been sick during the flight, but gotten much worse as the plane approached New York. Ten people were hospitalized and tested positive for the flu. Although the United Arab Emirates, where the flight originated, currently has CDC travel notices for diseases like MERS, which have similar symptoms to the flu, it seems like last year's flight that caused an endless string of Twitter jokes about horror movies was instead just a routine case of the flu, which is also a great reminder to get your flu shot this season, which can eliminate your chance of getting the flu this winter or lessen its impact if you're exposed to it. You can find flu shots at local pharmacies, private hospitals, and city health clinics. Visit nyc.gov/flu for more info. 29 years ago on September 2, 1990 — Brian Watkins is stabbed and killed after confronting a group of teens trying to rob his family 114 years ago on September 11, 1905 — The Ninth Avenue Elevated derails and falls off its track, killing 13 and injuring 48 Just before making a second political appearance on the Fox channel, Bill de Blasio declared this week that he will likely maybe consider thinking about suspending his presidential run if he does not meet the polling and fundraising requirements for the next month's debate, after already not qualifying for the upcoming September debate. The requirements are the same for October as they were for the September debate: Candidates need to achieve 2% in four polls or have 130,000 unique donors. While de Blasio is still polling between 0% and 1%, some more-recognizable fellow candidates throw in the towel, including New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Facing a multitude of problems at home, from NYPD officer suicides, the long-delayed firing of officer Pantaleo, and ever-increasing traffic fatalities, de Blasio took some time to visit the city this week and propose requiring Citi Bike riders to wear helmets and that all bicycles should be licensed, two measures that have previously been proposed, will never be implemented, and have shown to result in less cycling. In a reference to the Iowa state fair where de Blasio had been campaigning, comedians Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler took the opportunity last week to lay out some corn dogs and ears of fresh corn on a bed of hay outside City Hall, in an effort to lure the Mayor back home. This week in AGBC history: Criminal City, Train Trouble, and Superstorm Scammers One of the fake Buddhist monks in Times Square was arrested for knocking the phone out of a person's hand when the person tried to take a picture of the scammer, one of the imitation monks who roam Times Square, handing trinkets to tourists, then aggressively demanding payment. Also 4 years ago, a string of incidents in the subway showed the danger that subway conductors face while trying to keep the city moving. That week started out with five separate assaults on MTA employees, occurring at all hours throughout the day, including three attacks within the span of two hours. By 2018, after an increase in incidents targeting their workers, the MTA proposed a voluntary program for MTA workers to wear body cameras, but it's hard to tell what the status of the program is today. As recently as this year, the transit workers' union has called for greater police enforcement in the subway due incidents where MTA workers were spit upon. This week's episode is a panel discussion with comedians Kathe Farris, Emily Ruskowski, Erin Spencer, and Carolyn Plummer with new music from illuminati hotties. It's the very first time the Department of Tangents was recorded live in front of an audience. The North East Comic Con and Collectibles Extravaganza expanded its podcast panels and its comedy offerings this year, and I was lucky to nab all four comedians on the Friday night show presented by The Boston Comedy Festival before they took the stage. That's BCF founder Jim McCue we're thanking at the end. I haven't done a lot of panel shows before, but if they are as interesting as this one, I may have to make a point of doing more. Farris, Ruskowski, Spencer, and Plummer all have great stories of how they got into comedy and found who they were as comedians. Farris started and then stopped for years due to family obligations. Ruskowski is a social worker. Spencer bombed on purpose her first time onstage. Plummer has worked every kind of room you can imagine, from clubs to, as she calls them, “dead animal lodges.” A good chunk of the conversation centered around identity and experience. And there were some delightful moments where the comics asked each other questions, and I just got to sit back and listen. Carolyn Plummer Emily Ruskowski Kathe Farris This week's featured track, “Pressed 2 Death” by illuminati hotties from their album Kiss Yr. Frenemies. If you like your hooks with a sense of humor, this is the band for you. The songs are witty and fun, but some of the punchlines are in the music. It's a punk attitude, they'll give you a song you can hum and a raspberry. Literally, in this case. Enjoy “Pressed 2 Death” by illuminati hotties.
