The site at Harpole, a village four miles west of Northampton, had been a very straightforward excavation for the small team from MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) in March and April of last year. That was until they uncovered an internationally significant burial furnished with a remarkable 7th-century necklace, as well as a number of other high-status grave goods, a find which has caused fascination throughout the British archaeological community. On this episode of The PastCast, Paul Thompson, lead excavator at the site, explains what these artefacts can tell us about the woman they were buried with, and what they will add to our understanding of early medieval England as research progresses. Thompson spoke with Current Archaeology magazine editor Carly Hilts and regular PastCast presenter Calum Henderson. Carly's report on the Harpole Treasure is available to read in full on The Past website. And on this episode Carly also explains what readers and listeners can look forward to at the upcoming Current Archaeology Conference at UCL Institute for Education in London on Saturday 25 February (at which Paul Thompson will be speaking, along with a number of other interesting guests). Tom wrote for national magazines for decades, but this collection consists of personal essays that Tom wrote through the years about his adventures in various parts of the world, including skydiving in Russia, and going along for a ride with one of the ice road truckers in Alaska. He also nearly cut off his own arm with a chainsaw, so Tom's life has never been dull. We paired his book with what is considered a classic Montana adventure story, Tough Trip Through Paradise, by Andrew Garcia. This book was written in the early twentieth century and was tucked away in a safe for decades before an editor named Ben Stein from Livingston discovered the manuscript and polished it up and got it published. The story's veracity has come into question over the years, but there's no questioning Mr. Garcia's ability to tell a captivating story.

A slightly different episode this week as first we join Charles at Harpole Playing Fields where NTFC Women are taking on Notts County and then we're in the pub with Charles, Neil and Fan Club member, Mike Fuller. Northampton Town WomenWhile we have been huge champions of the Cobblers' women's team for the last couple of years, we've not that often managed to get to see them play live. On Sunday, Charles popped over to Harpole to witness the team's return to league action. James Wiles provides us with a report from the game and post match interview with managers Lou and Josh. In The PubWith Christmas just days away, Charles and Neil agreed to meet up in the pub for a drink and a chat about the Cobblers with Fan Club member, Mike Fuller. While there may have been no Cobblers 1st team game this week, there's still plenty to talk about including circuit breakers, mandatory vaccinations for players and the East Stand. PostbagThis week's question comes from John Mantle who asks: When/if the east stand is developed, how will the away allocation work as obviously currently a proportion of the east is given over to away supporters. The point being, I would be interested in a box for either matches or even a season, but would not want the box behind an away following! My understanding is that boxes would run along the entire stand, maybe this won't be the case? Struggling to see how this would work, as in the 1st division, many teams would bring with them more fans that the 980 or so housed in the south stand, so would for most home games have to give up space in the new east stand. I really do think that the east stand should be completed as a much wider plan for the stadium, but sadly can't see this happening. Oddly, I'm amazed that the club don't reach out to businesses to support financially, and have naming rights for example? Also surprised that the club never seem to want to raise any capital through some sort of share supporter scheme? I'm sure other clubs have done something similar? If you've got a question for us to discuss on the podcast, send us an email to podcast@cobblerstome.com Weston Favell Food BankSales of the https://my.captivate.fm/cobblerstome.com/shop (IACTM Podcast Mug) are going really well, thank you to all who have bought one so far. Could Texas face more blackouts this summer? According to John Harpole, founder and owner of Mercator Energy, a gas brokerage firm based in Littleton, Colo., it is a growing possibility given the damage to the state's power grid from the severe winter storm earlier this year that still needs to be addressed.“There are experts that are predicting there could be two or three rolling blackouts again this summer when peak day of demands increase,” Harpole told Cornerstone Government Affairs' Jack Belcher in this edition of Energy Policy Watch. “They've never seen this peak day of demand in the winter before, but I don't believe that the grid issues have functionally been addressed yet.”In the latest edition of Energy Policy Watch, Harpole, an expert on all aspects of the natural gas value chain and natural gas power markets, joined Belcher for a post-analysis discussion on the 2021 Texas power crisis plus an examination of solutions for the state's power grid operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).Harpole been his career in the late 1980s, sourcing gas for General Electric (GE), where he saw the deregulation of natural gas where the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission opened up access to pipelines so that GE could transport its own natural gas, he said.“As we saw the deregulation unfold on energy and the effort to integrate the electric grid really with the natural gas grid, I saw a number of issues that I was concerned about,” he said. “Most recently, those concerns were lived out in the Texas rolling or, in some areas, permanent blackouts back in February.”According to Harpole, ERCOT has some critical, fundamental flaws in the design of the transmission grid in Texas and how it responds. A second fundamental flaw he said hasn't been considered is when ERCOT was forced to cut off demand, also known as a “shed load,” ERCOT cut off supply to critical natural gas infrastructure.“One of the things that I've been worried about over the last 10 years is as we march on into this world that certain politicians would like to think that we'll never burn anything, any time, any more and rely exclusively on renewable energy, they forget about that the dispatchable ability—the ability to turn on and turn off—for natural gas, coal and, to lesser extent, nuclear, when much needed is critical,” he said.“In essence, electricity supply was cut off to natural gas infrastructure when natural gas infrastructure and natural gas, the commodity itself, could've answered a lot of the issues related to a shortage of electric generation,” he continued.Topics: Harpole's background in natural gas (1:45) What makes the ERCOT market different in Texas (3:05) Comparing generation resources—wind, natgas & coal (5:35) “Renewable energy landed on a soft pillow” (7:15) Natural gas production during the winter storm (9:35) Drive to electrify natural gas production (11:40) Fatal flaw in natural gas market (13:05) Cost of natural gas storage (16:50) What does Texas need to do (19:00)

On April 2, 2009, David Brown and Thane Harpole delivered this lecture entitled "Werowocomoco and Fairfield Plantation: Rediscovering the Forgotten Landscapes of Gloucester County." The excitement of discovering lost landscapes, including the Burwell family's ancestral home and the nearby village of Powhatan and Pocahontas, has resulted in the resurgence of support for historic preservation in the Middle Peninsula. David Brown and Thane Harpole described these activities to illustrate everyday life in colonial Virginia and to show how our interpretations of it influence our own day. Brown and Harpole are archaeologists, co-directors of the Fairfield Foundation, and founding members of the Werowocomoco Research Group. (Introduction by Paul A. Levengood) This event was cosponsored with the Society of Colonial Wars in Virginia. The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
