It's time for part 2 of our Death Penalty series! Since this is a Mormon podcast, we first look into the history of Mormons and the death penalty. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young both ordered assassinations and fostered environments where random acts of violence became inevitable. The State of Deseret, Utah, has a comparatively bloody, theocratic history. Then we take a broader view of religion and capital punishment. After that, we look into the ethics/morals of capital punishment and give you a look at the Innocence project. We wrap by discussing your responses from Survey #1 as well as our own viewpoints on the subject. Survey #2: After listening to these episodes, we'd like to hear if your insights or opinions have changed and how. https://forms.gle/Vjn48xzWgCWcJR8r8 Show Notes: Trump v United States: Oral argument on the former president's immunity claim: https://www.c-span.org/program/public-affairs-event/trump-v-united-states-oral-argument-on-the-former-presidents-immunity-claim/640481 23-939 Trump v United States (7/1/2024) https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/23-939_e2pg.pdf Account of hearing between circa 3 and 9 June 1837 state of Ohio v Joseph Smith for threatening to take life: https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/account-of-hearing-between-circa-3-and-9-june-1837-state-of-ohio-v-js-for-threatening-to-take-life/1#facts Joseph, in the Elder's Journal, discusses the Kirtland Bank and Warren Parrish and Grandison Newell's charges against hi: https://bhroberts.org/records/5tcqZf-vSQSfc/joseph_in_the_elders_journal_discusses_the_kirtland_bank_and_warren_parrish_and_grandison_newells_charges_against_him Orson Hyde, Life lessons learned: https://rsc.byu.edu/vol-3-no-2-2002/orson-hyde-life-lessons-learned Danites: https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/topic/danites Danite Manifesto: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Danite_Manifesto The Danite Constitution and Theories of Democratic Justice in Frontier America: https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=5074&context=byusq Journal of Mormon History Vol 30, No. 2, 2004: https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1043&context=mormonhistory General Smith's views of the powers and policy of the government of the United States circa 26 January - 7 February 1844: https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/general-smiths-views-of-the-powers-and-policy-of-the-government-of-the-united-states-circa-26-january-7-february-1844/12#full-transcript Journal of Mormon History Vol 33, No 1, 2007: https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1049&context=mormonhistory The Coming Storm: The murder of Jesse Thompson Hartley: https://user.xmission.com/~research/mormonpdf/storm.pdf The wound the never healed: https://www.prestopreservation.com/uploads/5/2/5/3/52533793/morrisite_story_small.pdf Official position on capital punishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/official-statement/capital-punishment The Movement to Abolish Capital Punishment in America 1787-1861: https://www.jstor.org/stable/1847110?read-now=1&seq=8 “Caedite eos. More than fifty years ago, during the evening of April 22nd, 1974, three people would lose their lives in the most brutal and barbaric of fashions during one of the worst - and most senseless - robberies America has ever seen… Those who were fortunate enough to survive the incident would be left with horrific injuries that left them permanently disfigured, and more than enough trauma to last a lifetime… What began as an ordinary day quickly turned into a night of unimaginable terror when four armed men stormed into “The Hi-Fi Shop”, a local audio equipment store, with plans to commit robbery. Two other accomplices waited outside the shop in getaway vans. As the robbery gradually escalated, five innocent individuals - made up of both employees and customers - were taken hostage and subjected to hours of unthinkable cruelty and violence... If you've listened to a good amount of our episodes you may know I tend to bring the horrific stories compared to what Nate brings to the table. This week is no exception, I start us of with The Hi-Fi Murders, what is initially believed to be a robbery in 1974 takes a much darker turn, sadly leaving three dead and two scarred for life. Following that up Nate talks a little about the Geezer Bandit, a bank robber who appears to be in his 70's but there may be more to it. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/support

On April 22nd, 1974, the Hi-Fi store in Ogden, Utah was the scene of one of the most gruesome, inhumane attacks in US history. Over the course of a few hours, hostages were tortured, raped, and shot while the perpetrators loaded up stolen audio equiptment to sell later. The city of Ogden was on edge after the murders, but suspects quickly emerged and were arrested. Of the 5 hostages taken that night, 2 survived, and one of them was able to testify in court about the horrors they endured. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Murder With a Firearm - Torture - Rape Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: Mad Rabbit: If you go to MadRabbit.com/queens and use promo code QUEENS you'll receive 25% off. The true crime cases we've covered on this podcast have all been horrifying; to even think people would be capable of such monstrosities is a terrible thought. This case is one of the worst I have encountered. We only hope that the victims and their families were able to find some peace. On April 22, 1974, six men in total, drove in two vans to the Hi-Fi Shop at 2323 Washington Boulevard, Ogden. They came with the intention of robbing the store and killing everyone who got in their way. There were two employees working that night, one teenage boy and his mother, and the father of one of the employees. Only two of them left alive, and suffered horrible traumatic injuries as a result. Stay safe out there. On April 22, 1974, two vans carry a total of six men pulled up to the Hi-Fi Store in Ogden, Utah. Four men went in, while two stayed in the vans. Two men held five people hostage. They forced them to drink Drano and some were shot in the head. One girl was raped before being killed. Two survived the incident, but suffered permanent injuries. Only three of the men were found at a local air force base where they were stationed. Two were charged with three counts of first degree murder and two counts of aggravated robbery. The were both sentenced to death and executed. The third was just charged with aggravated robbery, as he was the getaway driver and had no knowledge of the killings. He was sentenced to five years to life but was paroled in 1987.

In April 1974, 5 innocent victims’ lives would forever be changed in an electronic store one evening. They would be tortured and shot. Some of them would make it out alive...some would not.

What drives military members to murder? Maybe it's the violent nature of the work; or some childhood trauma; or a psychological disorder; or maybe they're just bad people. Maybe it's all of these things or a combination or none of them. The truth is we often don't know what compels someone to kill. If you're looking for answers, you're not going to get them here. What you're going to get are six stories of military murder that will leave you shaking your head: The Infidelity Solution Murder; The Hi-Fi Murders ; The 'How Far Can I Get' Murder; The Proposition Murder; The Coward Contractor Murder; and The Canadian Panty Thief Murders. And although it's not a murder story, we chat about the Air Force's 'Master Solution' to a missing finger mystery and how it backfired. Show notes at https://thedigressionpodcast.com/31 Sound Off! Every week Twisted Two's dives into a pair of uniquely terrifying stories that are worthy of a more in-depth look. For this week, we focus on one of the most brutal robberies in the U.S. known as the Hi-Fi Murders and the mysterious Claremont Serial Killer from Australia. Get ready for Scary Mysteries, Twisted Two’s. Hi-Fi Murders On April 22, 1974, the Hi-Fi Shop in Ogden, Utah was getting ready to close shop for the day. Employees, Stanley Walker (20) and Michelle Ansley (18) were inside the store at the time. Without warning, several men arrived at the shop aboard two vans. Three of the men entered sporting handguns while one person stayed inside the getaway vehicle. The two employees were tied up then taken down the basement as the gang started robbing the store. As the robbery progressed, a 16-year old boy, Byron Cortney Naisbitt, walked inside the shop to say thank you to Stanley Walker (an employee) for letting him park in the store parking lot while running an errand next door. He too was bound and taken hostage. As it became late, Stanley Walker’s father, Orren Walker (43) went to the store to check on his son. He was also taken hostage. Then, Naisbitt’s mother, Carol Naisbitt, arrived at the shop to look for his son and she ended up becoming a hostage too. By this time, the men now held five people hostage in the basement. The Claremont Serial Killer Twenty-eight years ago, a woman’s silk kimono was stolen off a washing line in Claremont, a high-end suburb in Perth, Australia. This same kimono led police to the arrest of one of the most terrifying serial killers in the area, two decades later. It was in 1996 when 18-year old Sarah Spiers called a taxi from a phone booth at 2:00 A.M. after leaving Club Bayview. Witnesses spotted her standing on the side of Stirling Road as she waited for the cab. One witness mentioned seeing a car stop in front of her. When the taxi arrived at 2:09 A.M., Sarah Spiers was gone. She has never been seen since.

[paypal-donation] George Throckmorton is one of the most amazing police officers in the world. Last year I talked to him about his role in the Mark Hofmann forgeries and bombings. In this first episode, we'll get acquainted with him, and learn how he became a forgery expert. Of course, we will talk about the Mark Hofmann forgeries and murders, but we will also briefly discuss one of his first forgery cases in Ogden, Utah. The Hi-Fi Shop murders are well-known in Utah because a few robbers tortured and killed customers while robbing an Ogden store called the Hi-Fi Shop. It turns out that forgery was involved in that case! https://youtu.be/nPMJImQWyM8 GT: I don't know how many of my listeners are familiar with a Hi-Fi Murders as they were known, but there were some criminals that tortured some people and killed them. It was pretty terrible. George: Ironically that case, a significant part of that was due to handwriting. GT: Really? Oh, I didn't know that. George: Again, we could go into that and I don't want to take a lot of time because that's not the emphasis. GT: I'll have to come back. We'll have to talk about that. George: It's worth talking about that. The significance was there was a homicide up there before the Hi-Fi Shop Murders, there was a homicide involving in airman from Hill Air Force Base and there was an auto theft ring going on out of Hill Air Force Base and they would steal cars and get an airman that was being released and asked him if he wanted to earn some extra money and he would drive the car back to the Chicago/Detroit area so he would get paid. And he was actually transporting stolen cars. But they didn't know it. ... George: In order for the cars to go back east, they had to have two sets of keys and Pierre can only find one set of keys. So, he went out to the base and got a duplicate set of keys made. He had to sign for that. I actually was able to attach his signature to request for the extra set of keys on that investigation when the Hi-Fi Shop Murders happened. So, we had been investigating that already and he was a suspect in that murder. We will talk more about how George became a document examiner. Check out our conversation….. George Throckmorton figured out how Mark Hofmann was forging documents.
