For at least the past 200 years or so, there's been a lot of debate about women and the role we're supposed to play in society. Historically, we've been expected to be the nurturers, the caregivers—the gentler sex, as we used to be called. We cook the food, we nurse the sick, we mind the children. Some of us are perfectly content in that role. But all throughout history, there have also been women who've chafed against these expectations. Some of them rebelled in a healthy, heroic way—fighting for women's right to vote, to manage our own money, to pursue careers. And some have rebelled in a darker, more toxic way, using the very tools of stereotypical womanhood—food and drink—to commit the deadliest crimes. Today we'll tell you about two of those women. Case 1: Tillie Klimek. Case 2: The Marquise de Brinvilliers.Join Katie and Whitney, plus the hosts of Last Podcast on the Left, Sinisterhood, and Scared to Death, on the very first CRIMEWAVE true crime cruise! The Many True Crimes of Tillie Klimek and Nellie Koulik Episode 100, a man goes to a doctor because he's not feeling well and the doctor says, “Sounds like arsenic poisoning,” and suddenly there are four women in jail who discovered that arsenic is more effective in getting rid of a husband than divorce. The ringleader of them all, however, not only poisoned her husband, but just about anybody who crossed her, including an annoying dog. Before it was through, more than 20 deaths would be attributed to Tillie Klimek. For our 100th episode, we take a look at one of Chicago's most prolific serial killers and her disciples. Send us a textTillie Klimek has many nicknames, among them “The Black Widow of Chicago,” “The High Priestess of the Bluebeard Clique,” and—my favorite—“The Premonition Poisoner.” She was rumored to be a psychic, and said to have poisoned as many as 20 people, cementing her name as one of the merry murderesses of 1920s Chicago. In this extra spooky episode, Kelley and Emily explore the stories of women who decided to be on the darker side of herstory. First, Kelley covers Maria Swanenburg, a serial poisoner and perhaps one of the most prolific female serial killers of all time- too bad we don't know much about her. Then, Emily returns to her home state of Illinois to tell the story of Polish immigrant, Tillie Klimek who had eerily accurate prophetic dreams of her husbands dying- but was she a psychic or a calculated killer? Get ready spooky bitches, because it's time to wine about herstory!Support the show

Amanda and Sarah sweat it out during an episode about creepy wall stuff and yet another Black Widow. Sarah tears down immurement, AKA the practice of trapping people or animals in walls for superstitious, religious, or punitive purposes. Amanda heads to Chicago for the tale of Tillie Klimek, a woman believed to have poisoned, many times fatally, around 20 people. Other subjects include ball sack enthusiasts, deadly spider inventions, and too many animal skeletons. Join us this week as we kick off the new year! Hannah takes us to the “Little Poland” area of Chicago in the 1920s, where Tillie Klimek started causing havoc in her neighborhood. She was known to be a bit psychic and became really good at predicting the deaths of all of her husbands. Bad deeds ran through her family tree and we also learn about her cousin Nellie's murderous nature. For fun, you will hear some terrifying French folklore of the not so noble nobleman “Bluebeard” and some fun facts about 1876. For astrology, the peak of the Quadrantids meteor shower occurs January 3rd - 4th.

In 1914, Tillie Klimek predicted that her first husband would die in just a few weeks. And he did. Later that same year, Tillie predicted her second husband would die, and three months later, he did. Instead of suspecting foul play, people close to Tillie wondered if she was a psychic. But when husband #3 died and husband #4 fell gravely ill, that’s when eyebrows finally lifted in suspicion. Otillie “Tillie” Klimek was born on October 22nd 1877 in Poland. She was considered to be a “psychic”, predicting the deaths of the people around her with astounding accuracy. Almost a little too accurate, as it turned out. Let's talk about Tillie Klimek and her much less heard of cousin Nellie, who were responsible for the deaths of over 10 people. In episode 7 of Season 3, we will discuss Tillie Klimek. She was a Polish-American serial killer operating in the Ukrainian village of Chicago; better known as Chicago’s Little Poland Neighborhood. Tillie was born in 1876 and died of a heart attack sitting in prison on November 20, 1936. She had at least 5 victims…possibly more. She would poison them with arsenic found in a product called “Rough on Rats”. Most serial killers operate solo; yes? Not Tillie. She was someone who seemed to really think she was above all. She was eventually referred to as “The High Priestess of the Bluebeard Clique” in the Little Poland neighborhood by the media. There were several other wives arrested for suspicion of murder of their husbands too. However, they were eventually released. One thing that makes this story even more odd; is the fact that she claimed to have precognitive dreams about her victim’s deaths. These dreams would tell her when they were going to die… Check out our website: https://www.naturevsnarcissism.com to find sources, merch, and much more!Follow us on Twitter: @NvsNpodcastFollow us on Instagram: @naturevsnarcissismLike us on Facebook: @naturevsnarcissismJoin our Facebook Discussion Group: Nature vs Narcissism Discussion Group Call/text us: 1-513-549-5735Email us: naturevsnarcissism@gmail.com Send us things: PO Box 498396 Cincinnati, Ohio 45249

We rely on our refrigerators to keep our food fresh. But when it’s time to throw an old fridge out, there’s a warning: they can become deadly. “Tillie” Klimek was born in Poland in 1876, but lived most of her adult life in Chicago, where in 1923 she was found guilty of the murder of her third husband by poisoning. There is a list of 20 of her victims, most of who died at her hands.
Tillie Kilmek was more than just a black widow, or so her town thought. Was she a serial killer or a psychic leader of a Blue Beard clique? You decide. When you think of serial killers throughout history, the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy. But what about Tillie Klimek, Moulay Hassan, Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime, not the perpetrators. In fact, serial killers are thought to be so universally, overwhelmingly male that in 1998, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference, “There are no female serial killers.”Lady Killers, based on the popular online series that appeared on Jezebel and The Hairpin, disputes that claim and offers fourteen gruesome examples as evidence. Though largely forgotten by history, female serial killers such as Erzsébet Báthory, Nannie Doss, Mary Ann Cotton, and Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova rival their male counterparts in cunning, cruelty, and appetite for destruction. Each chapter explores the crimes and history of a different subject, and then proceeds to unpack her legacy and her portrayal in the media, as well as the stereotypes and sexist clichés that inevitably surround her. The first book to examine female serial killers through a feminist lens with a witty and dryly humorous tone, Lady Killers dismisses easy explanations (she was hormonal, she did it for love, a man made her do it) and tired tropes (she was a femme fatale, a black widow, a witch), delving into the complex reality of female aggression and predation. Featuring 14 illustrations from Dame Darcy, Lady Killers is a bloodcurdling, insightful, and irresistible journey into the heart of darkness. LADY KILLERS: Deadly Women Throughout History-Tori Telfer
