Wikipedia. Sean is joined by political theorist William Roberts to discuss his excellent 2017 book, Marx's Inferno: The Political Theory of Capital which excavates not just Marx's use of the structure of Dante's Inferno but the radical political theory that undergirds it. What is the relationship between the analysis in Capital and the debates within the workers movement of the time typified by the likes of Proudhon, Saint-Simon and Owens? What is the place of radical republicanism in Marx's theory? How has this tradition in the workers movement been buried by history and what might we do with it today? For the full discussion become a patron today at www.patreon.com/theantifadaSign up or upgrade your membership at the discounted $10/month annual membership and DM your mailing address on Patreon for a free postage paid copy of the PM Press George Floyd Uprising book, with contributions by Andy and many past and future friends of the show!Son: Iggy and the Stooges - Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell

On October 14, 2021, officers with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 235-acre, 109-room mansion of William Leonard Roberts II. Roberts is better-known as the rapper "Rick Ross," and his expansive estate previously belonged to boxer Evander Holyfield before it fell into foreclosure and was purchased by Roberts. From the report of Deputy Donald Warney, lightly edited for clarity and brevity: On October 14, 2021, at approximately 3:56 pm, Lieutenant Kersey and I responded to [an address] in reference to a female trespassing on property belonging to William Roberts, AKA "Rick Ross." On my arrival, Lt. Kersey and I walked up to the pool area behind the residence where Precious Bridgeman, the trespasser, was standing next to a security guard who was also the complainant — Gary Summers. Summers advised that Roberts does not know Bridgeman and that she needed to leave the residence. Earlier that same day, Summers had asked Bridgeman to leave and advised her that she would be trespassing if she came onto the property, but she found an opening in the gate and ran through it, after which she ran to Roberts' pool and jumped in. Lt. Kersey placed Bridgeman in handcuffs. Bridgeman stated she was there for a photo shoot, that she is married to Rick Ross, that she lives at Rick Ross's house, and that she is pregnant with Rick Ross's twins. A searched of her purse turned up a small amount of marijuana. Bridgeman was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass and possession of marijuana. Stay tuned to learn what happened next.

After being stunned by China's Red Army, Douglas MacArthur wanted payback – MacArthur demanded President Truman allow him to use the US military's deadliest weapon, the nuclear bomb. MacArthur wanted to drop 50. The president thought it over; and decided against it. It was the end for MacArthur but not the war. A bloody stalemate settled over the Korean peninsula. They came out of the gloom of the Manchurian winter, bugles blowing, and swept all before them – the Chinese had arrived and once again the Korean War took a dramatic turn. The threat of China's Red Army had been dismissed by General MacArthur, but it proved a catastrophic mistake. The United Nations force was swept out of North Korea, a humbling for MacArthur as his forces endured the worst retreat in US military history.
Douglas MacArthur had no military equal, at least in his own mind. The veteran and hero of the victory over Japan believed he could do the same in Korea and with an audacious amphibious landing at Inchon turned the war on its head. The Reds were on the run, victory for the US, British and rest of the United Nations forces seemed inevitable. Could anything stop General MacArthur's final triumph? At 4am on June 25th, 1950, the Land of the Morning Calm was shattered by the sound of artillery firing across the 38th parallel dividing Korea into north and south. Soon the growl of tank engines, Soviet-made T-34s, confirmed what was coming. Invasion. North Korea's surprise attack on their ill-prepared southern neighbours began the first major conflict of the Cold War, a war of sweeping advance and hurried retreat whose consequence is still felt today. On this episode of BEHIND THE LENS we take a look at two films that speak to redemption, finding one's self, hope, faith, and inspiration and hear from two passionate and talented filmmakers as NADINE CROCKER talks about DESPERATION ROAD while KYLE WILLIAM ROBERTS discusses WHAT RHYMES WITH REASON. First up is my prerecorded exclusive interview with director NADINE CROCKER talking about her new film DESPERATION ROAD. A story of redemption, DESPERATION ROAD is a Southern noir thriller written by Michael Farris Smith based on his novel of the same name. Stunning cinematography and powerhouse performances by Garrett Hedlund, Willa Fitzgerald, Mel Gibson, and a breakout performance by Pyper Braun pull you deep into rural Mississippi as twists and turns make the road to redemption a desperate one for more than one person. An energetic and upbeat conversation with Nadine in which we dive deep into the minutiae of making DESPERATION ROAD lets you know what a gifted and attentive storyteller and filmmaker she is. Then take a listen as co-writer/director/editor KYLE WILLIAM ROBERTS joins us live talking about his new film – WHAT RHYMES WITH REASON. An inspiring and hopeful film for families and teens tackling issues of grief, loss, depression, anxiety, and teen suicide that takes us on a journey with 6 friends who come together after a tragic accident and venture into the wilderness to find a legendary, and perhaps mythical, landmark. Along the way, each is buoyed by their friendship and faith as they face the darkness within themselves. Wonderful performances. Breathtaking forested locations. Shot on location in Oklahoma with 16 locations in 18 days, Kyle and I discuss everything from research and crafting the script, finding locations, taking advantage of natural light, casting an ensemble and character development, score and needledrops, the need for a family film like this in the world today, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Corbin Strong has secured New Zealand's sixth track-cycling gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after producing an upset performance in the men's 15km Scratch Race. Strong, whose previous best result on the world stage was a first place in the Points Race at the 2020 Cycling World Champs, launched a bold attack with Scotland's John Archibold and Wales' William Roberts with 43 laps left to run in the race. The attack seemed to take the rest of the peloton by surprise as they failed to put together any sign of a counter-attack until it was too late. The result was that, with 10 laps to go, Strong's group lapped the main group of riders, leaving them as the sole medal contenders. It was at that stage that teammates Campbell Stewart and George Jackson mucked in to do their best to help Strong; initially giving him a chance to rest his legs somewhat in their draft, before positioning him superbly to sprint to the finish line and a gold medal. "It's a dream really, I raced really well. It's an awesome experience, I'm really happy to be at my first Commonwealth Games and for my debut race to finish like this is pretty awesome," Strong told Sky Sport following the race. Strong said his gameplan was always to be aggressive and try to push the pace of the peloton to separate himself from some of the pure sprinters in the field. "I've come off the road, I might not have as good track legs as some other people, so I really wanted to race aggressive and take it from the start and really make it a hard race. "I thought that would play into my strengths at the moment and that's the way it panned out. I was lucky to be off the front with a couple of strong guys from Wales and Scotland, so I must thank them as well." Fellow rider Stewart had nothing but praise for Strong's effort, saying it was a flawless ride. "He raced superbly. Corbin was strong, went on the attack, made the right moves and he was perfect all day and we made sure he was in the best place possible for the finish. He probably could have done it by himself, but it's always better with teammates," Stewart told Sky Sport. Jackson said he felt fortunate to be part of the race and play a role in Strong's victory, especially after being caught up in a horror crash on the velodrome earlier in the day. "Am happy I'm not too injured from the first crash. I was a lucky one out there, there was a few more boys much more banged up than me," Jackson said. Corbin Strong (C) celebrates gold with teammates, Campbell Stewart (L) and George Jackson (R). Photo / Getty Earlier, Rebecca Petch was in line for a bronze medal with just one rider remaining in the women's 500m time trial, after a superb ride. However, that remaining rider was Kristina Clonan, who set a Commonwealth Games record to claim gold by 0.06 seconds over Kelsey Mitchell, with Petch bumped to fourth. Earlier, the Kiwi men's sprinters were unable to keep up with the feats of their peers, or their rivals on the track. Callum Saunders, Sam Webster and Sam Dakin all bowed out early in the men's sprint. Saunders was the first to go, finishing 17th in the qualification round which saw him miss the cut-off by just one place, edged out by Webster who took the 16th and final spot. Webster was then quickly sent packing too by keirin gold medallist Nicholas Paul in the 1/8 finals, before Dakin, who was New Zealand's top qualifier in 10th, was beaten by 0.037 seconds by Shah Sharom to leave all the Kiwis to watch on from the sidelines for the remainder of the competition. The Kiwi trio in the 25km women's points race also missed out on the medals, despite some combative rides. Michaela Drummond, Bryony Botha and Emily Shearman all managed to take a lap on the field in the 100 lap race, but none could accumulate the extra points required in the sprints held every 10 laps to get onto the podium. Drummond was the closest, being in the mix until the final laps, but the three leaders peeled off the front in the final laps and mopped up the remaining points, with Australia's Georgia Baker winning gold on 55 points over Scotland's Neah Evans on 36, with Eluned King of Wales in third on 32 points. Drummond finished in fifth on 27 points, with Botha in eighth with 23 and Shearman ninth with 22.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sport and modernism in art in this podcast brought to you by the British Society of Sport History in association with the Institute of Historical Research with Geoff talking to Dr Bernard Vere of the Sotheby's Institute of Art. Geoff talks to Bernard about the relationship between sport and modernist art and architecture in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century in a wide-ranging discussion that takes in Robert Delanunay's landmark work, The Cardiff Team, the battle of styles between tennis champions Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills, fascist architecture and Darlington's (much-lamented) Feethams ground. They also cover British Modernism with a discussion of David Bomberg's work Jui Jitsu, currently (Jan 2020) on display at the National Gallery in London. Dr Bernard Vere is the author of Sport and Modernism in the Visual Arts in Europe, 1909–1949 (Manchester University Press, 2018). Rick Ross or William Roberts grew up near Miami when the drug war against the Cocaine Cowboys was at its peak. Witnessing the horrors of cartel justice made him relate even more to the gangster rap music he listened to. Although he fantasized about a drug-dealers life, he actually took the straight root to pay the bills and became a correctional officer at the age of 19, I know what your thinking – his street cred just out the window but now a days the dude is deffo on the other side of the law, in fact he's even willing to risk his life to hustle.

How is it possible that "Rick Ross" has been able to use the original drug kingpin Freeway Ricky Ross name to promote this image through his whole rap career? It is pretty amazing. The rapper Rick Ross puts out some pretty banging tunes but that still shouldn't excuse the fact that he completely hijacked the real Rick Ross image to sell a persona right? I thought Hip Hop was about speaking about reality. Apparently Rick Ross aka William Roberts is not so real after all. "Everyday I'm Hustling" was in direct reference to the real Rick Ross. If I was the real drug kingpin, I would be doing everything in my power to file a fraud case against one of Rap's biggest Superstars! Just keeping it real.

A century since the Armistice, World War I looms larger than ever in the UK's cultural and historical imaginary. Known first as 'the Great War' and then 'the war to end all wars', it was fought in new ways with new technologies, with unprecedented psychological effects on its participants, and this led writers and artists - many of whom were combatants - to find new forms to describe it. This week, Juliet talks to Charlotte Jones (King's College London) about how the war has been represented from 1914 to the present, especially in poetry, memoir and literature, and why portrayals in film and TV cause so much anxiety for those who insist it be remembered as a heroic sacrifice rather than a senseless waste. On this, our 40th episode, our guest is “Freeway” Rick Ross. I should say at this point, if you haven't heard it yet, go back and listen to Episode 25 with guest Marc Levin. This episode will make much more sense if you do so. I first interviewed Marc, and the subject of his documentary, “Freeway: Crack in the System,” “Freeway” Rick Ross, last year. The film premiered on Al Jazeera America and I was lucky enough to screen the film prior to its release. Here's the movie's trailer: I first became aware of the story of “Freeway” Rick Ross in 2008 when it was revealed that not only was the rapper calling himself Rick Ross was actually named William Roberts, but Roberts had also been a correctional officer in Florida. I then went on to read the late Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb's seminal series, “Dark Alliance,” in which he connected the dots between Ross, who was being supplied with cocaine by Nicaraguans raising money for the Central Intelligence Agency -backed Contras through drug sales. (Webb's story was also told the Jeremy Renner-starring dramatic film “Kill the Messenger,” based on the book of the same name.) July 21, Levin's film, was nominated for an Emmy award in the Outstanding Investigative Journalism: Long Form category. According to the Oakland Tribune, “In the course of his rise, prosecutors estimate that Ross exported several tons of cocaine nationally, and made more than $600 million in the process. Counting inflation its $1.6 billion comparing 1986 to 2010.” Now, he has applied the passion that helped him build an empire to helping the youth, Ross has been given a second chance to uplift his community by giving back through mentoring and sharing his story. He plans to inspire many of today's youths to achieve their greatest successes without following in his footsteps. Recognized as a pawn in the CIA drug game, Ross was a pioneer in the crack cocaine trade in Los Angeles, as well as other parts of the U.S. A renowned drug dealer, Ross harvested millions as an unknowing participant of CIA and Drug Enforcement Agency operatives, who provided him with unlimited amounts of cocaine. As a youth, Ross moved to South Central Los Angeles with his mother with the intent of playing tennis. He pursued a scholarship while attending high school. Unfortunately, his coach would later find out he was illiterate and removed him from the school. Ross then attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College and again pursued tennis, reaching the third spot on the team. Shortly after, at the early age of 19, Ross said a teacher, who taught at a job center, turned him on to cocaine. Because he looked up to him, Ross started selling cocaine for him. The money was good so he ended up starting his own business. His operation grew and he soon became one of the biggest cocaine dealers in South Central. During the height of his drug dealing, Ross was said to have made $2 million to $3 million a week. In 1996, he was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of trying to purchase more than 100 kilograms of cocaine from a federal agent. Ross became the subject of controversy later that year when Webb's “Dark Alliance” series brought to light a connection between one of Ross's cocaine sources, Danilo Blandon, and the CIA as part of the Iran-Contra scandal. The decision in his case was brought to a federal court of appeals where his sentence was reduced to 20 years and then reduced further for being a model inmate. He was then moved to a halfway house in California in the spring of 2009 where he was released on Sept. 29, 2009. And now, onto the show
