On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind. Third Eye Blind are in the midst of their Summer Gods tour with Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A, both of which grew up listening to the '90s vets. The band are playing nearly 20 songs from their wide-spanning catalog nightly, including perennial favorites “Jumper,” “Never Let You Go,” and “Semi-Charmed Life,” and the run goes until early August. “I have this sense that I am feeling the same way everybody else is — that we need a summer tour so badly,” Jenkins says. “We need the lights, the noise, the heat, and everybody up close to each other. Additionally, their 1999 sophomore album, Blue, will turn 25 later this year. Listen to their conversation on Artist Friendly wherever you listen to podcasts. The NFL Draft is in Detroit! Is that fun? Govier is learning about the Oakland County Child Killer which seems to be an unsolved mystery that doesn't get as much attention as it should considering true crime is all the rage. Govier got the yeahs updated from previous episodes. Get ready for plenty of Collective Soul yeahs. The United States government is making TikTok an enemy of the state when it isn't & the feds can spy on anybody in the country at any time making the 4th amendment a moot point. Did you know that Julia Fox was Josh Safdie's muse for the movie Uncut Gems? We got your emails! Travis is pissed that Govier unfairly labeled him a Wild Hogs fan. Which movie would you be pissed about being incorrectly labeled as enjoying? Finn Gurrer is learning a lot about Third Eye Blind's Semi-Charmed Life while also putting a decision to the show related to numerical musical artists. Remember Bowling For Soup? Steve wants to talk about opioids, but we're tabling it for another day when Govier is fully prepped. Steve proves that American universities are not bastions of knowledge leading the way toward a more developed future. Govier has Mr. Show fever which means there are multiple Mr. Show skits coming your way on this episode. Did you know about the connection between Mr. Show & Blink-182? East Palestine's train derailment settlement has been set at $600 million. As the show closes Govier has a sad story about a former co-worker who deserves to be remembered forever. Then Luke shares a recent event about a good friend in California who isn't here anymore. Powerful stuff. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Rookie by Boy Sets Fire. How many hits can you have and still be misremembered as a one-hit wonder? In the latest episode of Columbia House Party hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy try to find out by diving into Third Eye Blind's self-titled album. The successful debut produced five singles over the course of two years, landing them on era-defining compilation albums and every late-90s and early-00s coming-of-age soundtrack. Semi-Charmed Life may be the tune people remember them for the most - and it's a great snapshot of what remains a pretty definitive sound - but this album is deeper than you remember. Find out more about the non-singles that had an influence outside the genre, the alleged difficulties of working with Stephan Jenkins, and a tough ride on the MuchMusic Countdown in this week's podcast. Today we are going to wrap up the week with a song from 1997 called, Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. Just as a warning, this song is about addiction, so there are drug references and it is probably not a song fro young kids. With all that...enjoy the episode today. Stephan Jenkins was cast into the spotlight when Third Eye Blind's 1997 self-titled debut album exploded around the world. On the back of hits like "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Jumper", the frontman achieved success beyond his wildest dreams – all the while learning the hard way about the compromises the music industry often demands of its artists. Fast forward to 2022 and Third Eye Blind have not only weathered the storms of those early years, but as Stephan explains in this interview, being in control of the band's decisions and trajectory is much easier. The five-piece will tour the US in June, commemorating the 25th anniversary of their debut, while also shining the light on their latest album, 2021's Our Bande Apart. We talk about it all in this interview, from Stephan's difficult upbringing to his devotion to music, from the success of the band's debut to current day.

This episode focuses on a smorgasbord of song meanings that don't mean what you thought they meant. A few of the songs we dive into include Semi-Charmed Life, Closing Time, 99 Red Balloons, Summer of '69, and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Any analysis of the Get Back documentary would be remiss in not factoring in insights gleaned from those who've followed in The Beatles' professional footsteps: working musicians. To that end, I assembled a panel of some illustrious pros who also happen to be hardcore fans. Three are returning guests; one is new to SATB: Luther Russell: (Those Pretty Wrongs) - multi-instrumentalist Currently performing as one half of the duo Those Pretty Wrongs alongside ex-Big Star Jody Stephens, Luther has become a semi-regular on the podcast. As a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist/producer, he has discussed The Beatles' recording techniques, work as a collaborative, and the magic of Ringo's drumming. The first two albums from Those Pretty Wrongs are being reissued as a double album set, while a third is due out this year. He will also have a new solo set out as well. Arion Salazar: (ex-Third Eye Blind) - bass In his first appearance on SATB, he discussed Paul McCartney as an innovator, impacting generations beyond the 1960s. It was Arion who offered up the back cover design of Third Eye Blind's multi-platinum 1997 debut ("Semi-Charmed Life") which evoked the back cover of The Beatles' 1966 Revolver album. In early 2021, the bassist put together ensembles of musicians from bands including Smash Mouth, Smashing Pumpkins, Stevie Wonder and Testament, among others, to perform heartfelt covers of Beatle-related material for the first Fab4ConJam. He recently recorded with Flipsyde in Muscle Shoals for a pending release this year. Pat Sansone: (Wilco) - multi-instrumentalist He waxed eloquently for over two hours on the Sgt. Pepper album on a 2021 episode of SATB. Pat's radio show: Baroque Down Palace - a 2 hour show every month that centers on Rock, Pop, Soul, Folk music of the 1960s and 1970s that feature symphonic embellishments, or influence in some way from the classical music world:https://wyxr.org/baroque-down-palace/ Pat has released a 7" vinyl single ; a book of his photography, 100 Polaroids, was recently reissued. New to the show (but not The Beatles): drummer Dennis Diken, founding member of The Smithereens. In addition to their work over the course of several gold and platinum releases, he and his band recorded a pair of studio albums and one live one honoring The Beatles. They currently continue to perform live, alternately fronted by Gin Blossoms vocalist Robin Wilson and recording artist Marshall Crenshaw (also a previous SATB guest), in place of the late Pat DiNizio. He also records with Bell Sound, whose critically acclaimed album Late Music was released in 2009. Look for new material from both bands in '22. Dennis's radio show: Denny's Den airs weekly on Wednesday at 2-4pm Eastern Standard Time. Go to wfmu.org and hover over "LISTEN" then go down to "ROCK 'n' SOUL RADIO", slide to the right and click on "ROCK 'n' SOUL RADIO HOMEPAGE" to access archives and the weekly broadcast.
Can white boys in mainstream late-'90s rock bands rap? Well they certainly tried! Which incessantly catchy flood of words was the best classic song, "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind or "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies"?

Your favorite suit salesman Chet is back! "Semi-Charmed Life" picks up seven years after 'King of Wishful Thinking' when Holly and Chet rode off into the sunset--only for us to discover that things did not go as planned! Now Chet is engaged to someone else, and Holly is off in Los Angeles--but through a twist of fate, they find themselves in each other's lives once again! Can their second time be the charm--or is Chet fated to have a semi-charmed life with the cards fate dealt him?
B.C. is going back to High School this week! Figuratively speaking, of course. Bands from the 90s have come and gone. Very few are still active. A good chunk were absolutely polarizing. One of the most (if not THE most) polarizing would be San Francisco alternative band (and this week's spotlight) Third Eye Blind. As of 2021, frontman Stephan Jenkins and drummer Brad Hargreaves are the ONLY original members. And not without a lot of controversy ranging from legal battles with past bandmates, ego clashes, and what the band should sound like... All of which are STILL happening to this day! You could say it was far from a "Semi-Charmed Life" for all involved. :P Love them or hate them, Third Eye Blind was still successful in the Alternative Rock/Pop world and Jenkins is a damn good lyricist! But which 3eb album is the best? "How's It Going To Be" in the end? Not to sound like a "Crystal Baller", but I predict you'll be surprised where I rank their short, but solid discography. Tune in and see where your favorite album ranks! Another Sand Jam Festival headliner gave us some time today...and this is a good one...Brad Hargreaves drummer for Third Eye Blind. We reminice on why one of their songs was our default college graduation song, should Trent Reznor really have recorded Semi-Charmed Life, was $1 million too much for one of their videos, and were they nervous when they started the band. There’s an old quote that I’m sure you’ve heard referenced in a million sitcoms or Looney Tunes cartoons- though it actually stems from a 1932 western-- where one character, all flinty-eyed, turns to another, and declares, “This town ain’t big enough for the both of us.” It’s an order meant to scare someone away, but it’s also a declaration of the feelings of rivalry, of jealousy, as if it shouldn’t be allowed that two people of similar stature could be functioning-- or even flourishing-- in the same place and time. After all, you couldn’t possibly have two star quarterbacks on the team, or two top valedictorians. Someone always has to be the best, or even more importantly, to be seen by the public as the best. But was this true in the case of the two top female painters in Revolutionary-era France? Please SUBSCRIBE and REVIEW our show on Apple Podcasts! Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, had an image problem: she was seen as frivolous, silly, and out-of-touch. In order to combat her poor press, the royal court commissioned a series of portraits of the queen to make her more relatable and sympathetic. Such images act as excellent propaganda machines, giving Marie Antoinette a much-needed positive spin. But what is even more marvelous is the backstory of the artist who created these portraits-- because the painter who was chosen to portray the highest woman in the land was… another woman. Talk about a revolution. In the third episode of the ArtCurious Podcast, we'll look at the lucky and semi-charmed life of Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, one of the most popular painters of 18th-century France and the official court painter of Marie Antoinette. //SUBSCRIBE and review us on Apple Podcasts HERE! Here's the thing about social media; it's supposed to be social. Right there in the name. And yet, across the Internet there are millions of public videos, photos and posts that almost no one has watched, clicked or shared. Which begs the question: If a person puts a video on YouTube, and no one watches, did it even happen? Joe Veix wrote for Fusion about what he calls the Lonely Web. "It lives in the murky space between the mainstream and the deep webs. The content is public and indexed by search engines, but broadcast to a tiny audience, algorithmically filtered out, and/or difficult to find using traditional search techniques." Just to focus on YouTube, the company reports that over 400 hours of video are uploaded every minute. Nobody can watch all this stuff. But it's there... waiting. Joe tells Manoush that watching these videos can give you a refreshingly honest look into someone's life, as opposed to the more edited and filtered versions that many of us share. "But is also emotionally exhausting," he says. "Because on some level you are maybe not supposed to be watching these videos. It's a little voyeuristic." In many ways, the present-day Internet caters to our laziness. The people who work at media companies are pros at understanding our expectations, finding buzzy content, slapping on the perfect headline and setting it right in front of our eyes. The Lonely Web offers something different — its headline might just be a string of numbers, and it doesn't care about your expectations. It's up to you to go out and find it. But first, let Joe and Manoush be your guide by listening to this week's episode. Here are the painfully ordinary, yet somehow wonderful videos they discuss: If you're looking for more Lonely Web videos, look no further: They're right here. Today I talk to friend and musician Kevan Aguilar about the semi-alt rock of the late 90's, including The Wallflowers' odd contribution to the Godzilla soundtrack and Third Eye Blind's meth and sex-laden hit Semi-Charmed Life. I try to figure out the video for Heroes, Kevan also discusses being introduced to bands by his older sisters, and we both realize what a loser Stephen Jenkins is.
