Compared to some of the other Japanese pitchers who have transitioned to the United States, Hideo Nomo's American career seems relatively short and underwhelming. But the impact it had on two nations, how players move between leagues, and what fans can expect is immeasurable. After signing with the Dodgers 29 years ago this week, Hideo Nomo went on to prove that Japanese players could indeed thrive in the US, and paved the way for everyone who came affter. Mike and Bill look back at the Tornados life and career. Plus, happy birthday to Jimmy Ryan and Chet Lemon! And farewell to Red Swanson and Billy Gardner.

Hideo Nomo could have stayed in Japan and played ball. Made alot of money, and enjoyed his fame, but he wanted more for himself. His move to play in America, was an attack on the Japanese baseball establishment, but it also promoted thought for not only future Japanes ballers, but the whole entire Asian-Pacific rim, as he offered a pathway of least resistance, to playing the best of the best. He was willing to risk his ruputation back home. He was willing to risk all that he had accomplished as a baseball superstar in Japan. He was willing to put it all on the line, without really knowing if he would be successful. But he believed in himself. He had very little to gain, and everything to lose. This week we discuss the career of the baseball pioneer, Hideo Nomo, who's impact on Major League Baseball, changed the game forever, and for the better. #MasinoriMorakami #HideoNomo #KintetsuBuffalo #MasatoYoshii #AkiraOgi #NankaiHawks #SanFranciscoGiants #LosAngelesDodgers #KeishiSuzuki #ShigetosiHasagawa #DonNomura #ArnTellum #RandyJohnson #ShoheiOhtani #HidekiMatsui #HidekiIrabu #YuDarvish

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and then you have…this week in Asians in Baseball! The good: Yu Darvish hits a massive milestone of 3000 career strikeouts across NPB and MLB, being only the second player !EVER! to do so. How iconic is this feat? The other pitcher that holds this distinction is…Hideo Nomo. The bad: A few of our guys are struggling on the mound, so we attempt to give them the World Famous Asians in Baseball Bump (tm) (jk it's not tm). And we have a bone to pick with Yankees fans, who need to back off of Isiah Kiner-Falefa! The obvious: As the season winds down, MVP and ROY conversations ramp up - of course, we're Ohtani / Kwan all the way. I dive into their recent success and why they are back on top. 2. A baseball creator on Tik Tok decided to NOT include Nolan Ryan in the Top 10 Pitchers of all time list... Hoornstra - MLB Writer/Reporter/Author of "50 Greatest Dodger Games of All Time" We discuss: J.P's upbringing as a musician, teacher and college student at UCLA How he came up as a young writer in the business Why psychology plays into his writing Highlights from his book and games that stuck out to me including: The only no-hitter at Coors Field in 1996 by Hideo Nomo, Kershaw's 15 strikeout No-Hitter, The Dodgers hitting 4 consecutive homers in 1 game back in 2006, and the first ever televised MLB game, included the Brooklyn Dodgers How this current Angels team is doing so far and why they are contenders The Dodgers being so dominant despite early injuries Vin Scully's last game at Dodger Stadium and how important that win became Is Clayton Kershaw the greatest Dodger pitcher of all time? Walker Buehler got married, and a bunch of his old teammates showed up, which got Jeff thinking about the nature of baseball as a business and the friendships that exist within it. Then we talked about some listener feedback on some guys people thought Jeff missed on Friday's episode about expanding the Hall of Fame, specifically Ron Cey and Hideo Nomo. And finally, we answer a listener question about how excited we should be about Dodgers catching prospect Diego Cartaya. Kimmy Yam from NBC Asian America published an interesting article this morning. She made the assertion that Major League Baseball has a clear bias against Asian players...because there isn't one Asian player in the baseball Hall-of-Fame. She makes the case for Hideo Nomo...players like Ichiro Suzuki...and claims Major League Baseball past history is the reason Asians are excluded. We bust through this myth...and provide the REAL reason there isn't an Asian player in the Major League Baseball Hall-of-Fame. We also explain that Kimmy Yam either wrote this article for attention...or didn't do her research.
Legendary baseball agent Don Nomura joins the boys to talk about the numerous stops on his professional journey (and how his brief baseball career saved him from being killed in a liquor store), representing Japanese superstar Hideo Nomo at a time when his homeland had deemed him a traitor, the importance of the internationalization of baseball and how a loophole led to Major League Baseball's Asian expansion. #HideoNomoForTheHall

11-13-2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the show by talking about the recently announced Rookie of the Year Award in MLB- particularly, the AL and winner Shohei Ohtani. John blasts the criticism of people who look at Ohtani in the same way Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, Hideo Nomo, and others were judged when they all came from Japan with many years of professional experience. Ohtani bypassed that, and the financial benefits of remaining in Japan to play for the league minimum in MLB. In addition, he proved to be a true two-way playing MLB pitcher, something the game had not seen since Babe Ruth. John segues that into the mental barrier fans put on themselves when it comes to the knowledge of the sport they "support." In other words, fans put the knowledge of their favorite team over that of the sport, making them biased towards their team. In 2018, it is very ignorant for a fan to ignore the information on sports that is at their fingertips. That judgement clouded some Yankees' fans evaluation of Miguel Andujar against that of Ohtani. John then puts a list together of the ten worst quarterbacks in the (recent) history of the NFL in honor of the just released Nathan Peterman. Finally, some homage is paid to the life of Stan Lee, the founder of Marvel Comics- with a comparison made to Sy Berger, the founder of Topps Baseball Cards.
Jody Avirgan talks with legendary manager Bobby Valentine and producer Andrew Muscato about Hideo Nomo, Japanese baseball, and the making of "The Loophole." NYC! We have an event on December 3rd. More info at 30for30podcasts.com/events
Former MLB manager, Bobby Valentine joined Ron Diaz and Jay Recher on Friday afternoon. Bobby told the guys what inspired him to be a part of the Hideo Nomo 30 for 30 podcast. He also told us what players he enjoys watching in today's games.
In 1995, star pitcher Hideo Nomo attempted to do what no Japanese player had done since 1965 - join Major League Baseball. Nomo and his agent hatched a plan to overcome the legal and cultural barriers that stood in his way, risking Nomo's career and reputation in Japan. The Loophole reveals how they pulled it off, launched "Nomo-mania," and transformed both American and Japanese baseball forever.
Ty and Dan walk through a series of intriguing one-on-one propositions and pick which sides they think will come out on top. Also, what Hideo Nomo has in common with the Big Ten West, the looming Zai-Era in Florida, and Tom Herman.
