Hong Kong relaxed pandemic restrictions on Thursday, with Disneyland and museums reopening and nighttime restaurant dining resuming as the city's worst COVID-19 outbreak appears to be fading.Enthusiastic visitors ran into Disneyland the moment the gates opened after a three-month closure.Popular theme parks were ordered to close in January as Hong Kong's fifth wave of the coronavirus took hold. Nearly 1.2 million people in the city of 7.4 million were infected in less than four months, and nearly 9,000 have died.“Since Christmas we haven't been back here, my daughter's really happy, she's been waiting so long,” said Joyce Mak, 36, who brought her young daughter to Disneyland. “Last night she was so excited, she didn't want to go to sleep.”The city was caught off guard as the surge, driven by highly transmissible omicron variant, overwhelmed hospitals. At the peak of the outbreak, bodies were stored in refrigerated containers because mortuaries were overwhelmed. The easing of restrictions came after officials acknowledged that people were getting frustrated with the measures, and that there must be a balance between fighting the epidemic and resumption of normal activities. The relaxation of measures before Hong Kong has reached zero COVID-19 cases marks a shift from the city's earlier strategy, which was aligned to mainland China's zero-tolerance for any outbreaks. Previously, authorities were reluctant to ease measures until it was clear that outbreaks in the city were stamped out.A 15-year-old student, Cynthia Cheung, said Disneyland was her ”happiest place.”“It's been such a long time since coming here, last time was in December,” she said. “I really missed it.”Theme parks can now operate at 50% capacity, and visitors must show proof of vaccination. Disney employees held up signs reminding people to keep social distance. In mainland China, the death toll rose to 25 in an outbreak in Shanghai that has all but shut down the country's largest city. Health authorities said Thursday that eight more people had died in the previous day. The relatively low number of reported deaths highlights China's use of much narrower criteria than the rest of the world for its pandemic statistics.Shanghai has eased the lockdown somewhat in areas that have not reported new cases in seven to 14 days, allowing residents out of their homes but still restricting them to their compounds or neighborhoods. Some said on social media that they dare not venture out anyway, wary of entering nearby areas that have had recent cases.Officials said this week that 12.3 million people in the city of 25 million are now in “control” or “prevention” areas, which are less restrictive than lockdown zones in a three-tier system. That is 4 million more than 10 days ago, they said. However, one of the city's 16 districts announced Thursday that no residents would be allowed to leave their compounds. The Jing'an district in central Shanghai said that even those in prevention areas, the least restrictive zone, would no longer be able to venture into the surrounding neighborhood. The city reported 18,495 new local cases on Thursday, including 15,861 without symptoms. In eastern Shanghai, some residents were ordered to leave their homes while health workers carried out a large-scale disinfection following a spike in infections, according to news reports and social media posts. It wasn't clear how many people in Beicai town were affected. The area's population is nearly 300,000. Phone calls to the municipal government weren't answered. Photos published by The Paper, an online news outlet, showed workers in hooded, white protective suits spraying disinfectant in homes. In Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese region, attractions such as Ocean Park and M+ museum reopened Thursday. Gyms, beauty salons and massage parlors were also allowed to resume business. Customers must have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and scan a QR code upon entry for contact-tra...

If you're planning to travel to one of the Disney Parks & Resorts around the world, here's what you'll need to know and expect if you want to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic. The basicsAfter being closed for over a year, Disneyland Resort in California reopened on April 30 with limited capacity at Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park. Only California residents may visit the parks until June 15.Those wanting to visit need to purchase tickets in advance via a new reservation system.Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa reopened on April 29. Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel is set to reopen June 15, while the Disneyland Hotel will reopen on July 2 with reduced capacity."Avengers Campus," a new land based on the Marvel franchise, opens at Disney's California Adventure on June 4.In Florida, most of Disney World's parks are open. The Blizzard Beach water park reopened on March 7. No reopening date has been set for Typhoon Lagoon, however.Disney World also requires visitors to make reservations in advance.Hong Kong Disneyland reopened in February -- the third reopening for the park since the start of the pandemic. Shanghai Disneyland Park is operating normally with enhanced health and safety measures in place, however guests need to reserve their tickets online before visiting.Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea are open. A visitor cap is in place, with each park allowing 5,000 visitors per day, excluding those who have already bought advance tickets.Disneyland Paris announced it will reopen on June 17. This includes the Disneyland Park, Walt Disney Studios Park, Disney's Newport Bay Club and Disney Village. What's on offerThe original and, some might say, best, theme parks, Disney's resorts remain a magical experience for all the family. From vertiginous rides to firework displays, and of course the chance to meet classic characters, a trip to a Disney Park makes memories that last a lifetime.Who can goEntry to each Disney Park is dependent on local travel restrictions. Disneyland Resort is only open to California residents until further notice. The Paris location -- when it reopens -- will be subject to France's entry rules, which prevent most non-EU nationals from coming into the country, however the EU has agreed to allow vaccinated travelers from countries with low infection rates, raising the possibility of summer getaways to the continent.Only locals and returning citizens can access the Tokyo and Hong Kong Disney parks, while the Shanghai resort can only be accessed by locals or those who meet China's strict entry requirements, including two negative test results taken within 48 hours of departures. What are the restrictions?Disney parks in the US are are slowly easing their Covid-19 protocols. All Disney Parks require guests to wear masks, and some parks' mask requirements are more stringent than others. For instance, Disneyland in California requires face coverings for everyone 2 or older, including people who have been vaccinated. In mid-May, Disney World announced that masks and face coverings for guests will be "optional in outdoor common areas".Every park has reduced capacity. Guests visiting most parks must take a temperature check on entry and observe social distancing at all times. What can visitors expect?Similar to other Disney parks around the world, Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida have reopened with some restrictions.Parades and fireworks have been put on hold indefinitely in a bid to keep guests safely apart. FASTPASS and Disney MaxPass services are suspended and not available for purchase or use.Interactive games, such as the hands-on scavenger hunt game Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, have been closed.Capacity has also been cut, with numbers further limited in restaurants and in queues to prevent overcrowding.Despite this, guests can still dine in at their favorite restaurants and enjoy the rides, though character meet-and-greets have be...

From 'Laughing Place Studios', welcome to your all things Disney Podcast... making your Disney experience more magical. Your listening to "Disney with Daddy and Daughter!" Our review of Hong Kong Disney and what you can expect at this wonderful park.
We meet the teary-eyed couple over drinks Lan Kwai Fong. Their story is pretty typical for Hong Kong and goes something like this: girl meets boy, they fall in love and maybe even move in together. He gets a raise and she gets a promotion and life is going well... right up until the family finds out. And then within days family relations hit a crisis point and rumours surface that a distant uncle has asked the Triads to get involved....Learning Cantonese? Our advanced Cantonese podcasts at Popup Cantonese are a no-mercy plunge into full-speed, native-level Cantonese. We're also willing to call things as we see them and pass judgment on everything from Hong Kong Disney to your office gossip. So take a listen, and if you've got a story you'd like to share write us at service@popupcantonese.com.
Learning Cantonese? We've all heard the horror stories, of friends of friends who came to Hong Kong for a nice beach vacation only to find themselves trapped at Hong Kong Disney for two weeks straight, shocked at the general lack of English on the island and unable to muster the courage to find their way to the closest subway, bus or taxi....While we'll leave finding the beach as a self-study exercise, in this lesson we are going to solve your transportation issues once and for all. Join Brendan and Nicole as they cover the key modes of transportation in Hong Kong. We'll learn how to say the words for subway, bus and taxi and practice ways to ask for them by name. Everything is here except for "limousine", which is our way of telling you big spenders to sign up for our university program....
