This the latest in our occasional “Rabbit Hole” series, with my friend George, where we test the bounds of reality, from politics to the financial system. This time roles are reversed, as I am a guest on my own show! Thus, we explore some of the philosophical foundations which under pin current events, and in … Continue reading "A “Down The Rabbit Hole” Special; In Reverse!"

Send us a textThis episode of The Anxious Rambler podcast focuses on the host's recent concert experiences seeing The War on Drugs for two nights in Ohio and Kentucky and a solo trip to see My Morning Jacket in Savannah, Georgia. The hosts begin by talking about their road trip to Columbus, Ohio, the first stop on their concert adventure. They discuss the enjoyment of driving into a city at night and listening to music and their excitement about the upcoming shows. The host shares that, other than a previous two-night stint with The War on Drugs in Louisville and Indianapolis, this is her first experience attending back-to-back shows by the same band. They also talk about their positive impressions of Columbus and Cleveland. The first concert took place at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The host recounts the beauty of the venue, located in a national park, and its history as the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra. They go on to describe The War on Drugs' setlist, noting standout songs and moments. The setlist included “Oceans of Darkness,” “Pain,” “Ocean in Between the Waves,” “I Don't Want to Wait,” “Harmonious Dreams,” “Strangest Thing,” “Come to the City,” and “In Reverse.”.The host shares a story about reconnecting with a former coworker, Lane, during the show. She describes how she thought she recognized the woman sitting in front of her but couldn't believe it was actually her. They hadn't seen each other in 16 years. Lane later turned around and told the host she had been talking about her on the way to the show, specifically mentioning how much the host loves The War on Drugs and wishing she had more friends with similar taste in music.Next, the hosts talk about the second concert, which was at the Bourbon and Beyond festival in Louisville, Kentucky. The host compliments the festival's side-by-side stage set-up and voices her distaste for VIP sections at shows. The setlist for this performance was similar to the previous night's but with the addition of "Red Eyes," which was played instead of "Strangest Thing," and the covers "Play It All Night Long" and "Under the Pressure." It started to rain during the last two songs of the set, a phenomenon that the host believes is a regular occurrence at outdoor War on Drugs shows. Due to her enthusiastic dancing and energy, the host is dubbed the "fan MVP" by other concert attendees and even manages to score a copy of the setlist. The final part of the episode focuses on the host's recent trip to Savannah, Georgia, where she saw My Morning Jacket with her best friend from home, Shaie. The host describes becoming emotional upon hearing that baseball legend Pete Rose had died just before My Morning Jacket took the stage. Rose, a Cincinnati Reds player and an important figure in the host's family, had even recorded a Cameo video message for the host's father four years prior. The host shares that she and her friend were then escorted to the front of the stage by an usher just as the lights went down. The host goes on to highlight standout moments from the 20-song setlist, which included “Gideon,” a Chris Kristofferson cover, a Nina Simone cover, and an encore consisting of “Golden,” “Off the Record,” and “Dance Floors”. The episode concludes with the host reflecting on the Support the showSupport the Pod or Binge the Entire Season Now! https://www.buzzsprout.com/1269236/support https://youtube.com/@IconicSeasons Connect on Social https://www.instagram.com/ncaaiconicseasons/

The stalwart Los Angeles-based dream metal band, Iress will release their new album ‘Sleep Now, In Reverse' on 26th July 2024 via Church Road Records (ROW) and Dune Altar (USA). Iress' music is the sonic equivalent of standing on a beach as a tidal wave approaches — aware of certain devastation, yet transfixed and grateful to witness something so terrifyingly beautiful. Drawing inspiration from dark, yet commanding elements including metal, shoegaze, and slowcore, their music presents a cinematic crescendo that swells with intensity and wanes with sorrow. Iress formed in the musical crucible of Los Angeles in 2010. Frontwoman Michelle Malley, dubbed “the Adele of Doom” by LA music peers, possesses vocals that range from an enveloping smokey warmth to anguished belting, revealing an emotional depth that arrests with unbelievable restraint and control. The band, composed of bassist Michael Maldonado, drummer Glenn Chu, and guitarist Graham Walker, have fostered a chemistry that translates seamlessly to the stage. Their live performances are intentional and dynamic, leaving audiences stunned to silence, moved to tears, and immersed in a satisfying amount of crushing distortion. Over the years Iress has evolved, always exploring new dimensions in their sound, yet always showcasing Malley's equally fragile and ferocious vocals. Their intentionality in crafting concise songs, each flickering into existence with magnificent intensity, aligns with nuanced storytelling. Iress seamlessly weaves layers of crushing guitars, atmospheric textures, and brooding rhythms, creating a sonic tapestry that blends darkness and beauty. With their upcoming LP, Sleep Now, In Reverse, and an international touring schedule in 2024, Iress invites listeners to be transported to a realm where darkness and beauty intertwine. We spoke to vocalist Michelle Malley about the new album, what it has taken to get to this point, and what made this specific album so special for the band. We also delve into their upcoming live performances, and Michelle takes on the Ozzy Osbone randomised section. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Joshua Treviño. Joshua works and writes at the Texas Public Policy Foundation and spent the entire 1990s listening a lot to Matthew Sweet. Joshua's Music Pick: Matthew SweetFor listeners of a certain age, just the name Matthew Sweet will evoke a particular memory, and it's likely one that involves heartbreak. Breaking through with the power-pop masterpiece, Girlfriend, Sweet channeled the inner thoughts and emotions of Gen-Xers everywhere and married them to killer hooks and melodies. Of course, his career is more than just that.Matthew Sweet bridges the gap between sweet, melodic power pop and the edgy alternative rock sound of the 1990s, leveraging the guitar work of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd on his best music. His influences are clear -- you hear some Beatles, sure, but also influences of Big Star, the Byrds, and even Neil Young in the guitar tones. His run of albums from Girlfriend to In Reverse (or roughly 1990–2000) is what we focus on in this show, though additional time is spent on his first two solo efforts and some of his later-career output, particularly the trio of Under the Covers albums recorded with ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs. It's great music and for many, including one co-host, it's essentially brand-new music for the ears. They say nothing is certain in life, but we can guarantee you 100 percent fun when you tune in for this Matthew Sweet edition of Political Beats.

Today gas is at $3.32 a gallon and the inflation rate is at 7% ... and STILL RISING. These are just 12 months of numbers, but we're clearly in a worrying decline. While the economy has opened up more post-COVID, it's not just getting worse — we're going IN REVERSE. Glenn heads to the chalkboard (and the very top of his studio ceiling) to explain what's happening to inflation and why it's so hard for your family to afford basic goods and groceries. It's not “corporate greed,” as Democrats have been telling you. The Biden administration wants to continue to spend trillions of dollars to “reinvent capitalism,” but that's in addition to the trillions that are being pumped out IN THE SHADOWS. Glenn exposes what the Fed has been doing behind closed doors and shows us the tidal wave that's about to hit. He's looked at the numbers, and they're frightening.

RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB: I've had some wonderful guests in the past, but this one is particularly near and dear to me for reasons which I cover in this episode. Power pop legend Matthew Sweet talks with me about a number of things including what it's like to hang out with Brian Wilson, the early days of MTV and record labels, what's in store for the future, and more! There's certainly a lot of talk about in regards to his many records but I did steer the conversation towards Girlfriend, Altered Beast and mainly In Reverse, which I think is one of the best records of his career. Even if you've never heard of Matthew, you should become familiar with his incredible songwriting since it's had a huge influence on my own music. There is no outro, since I wanted one of my favorite ballads of his to play in its entirety, and have the episode end on that "note." This was a true honor, and I couldn't be more happier with this conversation. There will be more to come in the future! Songs featured: "Girlfriend" from the album Girlfriend "Where You Get Love" from the album Blue Sky On Mars "I Almost Forgot" from the album 100% Fun Matthew's website for tour dates & music: http://www.matthewsweet.com/

Joining us this week is Matthew Sweet for a lengthy and wide-ranging discussion. Matthew shares his insights on his latest album project, and what the fulfillment aspect of crowd-funded albums is really like. We talk about his earliest influences, from new wave and punk to 70s power pop like Big Star and The Raspberries, and discuss why power pop bands are almost always critically acclaimed but tend to gain appreciation in retrospect. Matthew explains how his various guitars impact his songwriting (which may involve recording on his iPhone), and his earliest years learning bass to Yes records and Carol Kaye instructional videos (who would later play on his album In Reverse), which got him into a college band while he was still eight grade. We dive into the discography, discuss the leaps between the first two Columbia albums and Girlfriend, to the harsher and dark sound of Altered Beast. There's so much more, we can't list it all! Sick of Myself! Drew Carey! 70 Challengers! Brendan O'Brien! Mad Men! Making In Reverse! Touring! Fred Armisen! Susanna Hoffs! The Telecommunications Act of 1996! Mike Myers! Pottery! It's all in there, and we hope you enjoy. There’s so much more, we can’t list it all! Sick of Myself! Drew Carey! 70 Challengers! Brendan O’Brien! Mad Men! Making In Reverse! Touring! Fred Armisen! Susanna Hoffs! The Telecommunications Act of 1996! Mike Myers! Pottery! It’s all in there, and we hope you enjoy.Songs in this Episode:Intro - Girlfriend38:22 - Dinosaur Act54:22 - Sick of Myself1:18:29 - Thunderstorm1:46:14 - Ivory Tower1:56:54 - Where You Get LoveOutro - Come to CaliforniaFollow on Twitter / FacebookRequest A Review / Buy A T-Shirt
