WE WILL BE SPENDING MOST OF 2025 ON THE DOCTRINE OF ORIGINAL SIN NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF ITS IMPORTANCE VERTICALLY SPEAKING, THAT IS SALVATION, BUT ALSO HORIZONTALLY SPEAKING, THAT IS THE MORAL WELL BEING OF AMERICA, AND THUS THE PRESERVANCE OF AMERICA. ORIGINAL SIN IS INEXTRICABLY TIED,NOT ONLY OUR PERSONAL SALVATION, BUT THE PRESERVATION OF AMERICA,BEING THE LAND OF HAPPINESS AND FREEDOM, AND NOT GOING THE WAY OF ROME. JONATHON EDWARD'S TREATISE ENTITLED ‘THE GREAT CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE OF ORIGINAL SIN DEFENDED' WAS WRITTEN TO COUNTER DR. TAYLOR'S WORK DENYING THE INNATENESS OF ORIGINAL SIN. JONATHON EDWARDS WRITINGS ARE ABOVE MANY OF OUR HEADS AND THUS HARD TO UNDERSTAND, BUT IT IS GOOD FOR US AMERICANS TO ATTEMPT TO LISTEN ABOVE OUR HEADS THAT WE MIGHT GROW. WE MUST PUSH OURSELVES TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFICULT THAT WHEN WE RETREAT BACK WHAT USED TO BE HARD IS NOW EASY. SO LET PUSH OURSELVES TO LISTEN TO PICK UP AN IDEA OR SO IN EACH MESSAGE EVEN IF MUCH OF IT WAS OVER OUR HEADS, THAT IS HOW WE GROW. JONATHON EDWARDS WRITES MICROSCOPICALLY AND THUS WE HAVE TO DO THE TELESCOPIC ON OUR OWN. THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT IS BEING READ AT THE END OF THIS MESSAGE. TO SHOW HOW DEEP JONATHON EDWARDS IS, ATTEMPT TO READ IT AND SEE IF YOU CAN SEE HOW IT APPLIES TO ORIGINAL SIN, HOW ORIGINAL SIN, WARPS OUR REASONING AND THUS OUR TEMPORAL NEEDS OVERRIDE OUR ETERNAL NEEDS. THIS WILL GIVE YOU AN IDEA HOW CAREFULLY YOU MUST LISTEN IN ORDER TO GET AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT HE IS PROVING. These things are often mentioned in Scripture as Evi|dences of extreme Folly and Stupidity, wherein Men act as great Enemies to themselves, as tho' they loved their own Ruin; And how can these things be accounted for, but by supposing a most WRETCHED Depravity of Na|ture? Why otherwise should not Men be as wise for themselves in spiritual and eternal Things…If any should say, 'Tis true, if Men gave full Credit to what they are told concerning eternal Things, and these appeared to 'em as real and certain Things, it would be an Evidence of a sort of Madness in them, that they shew no greater Regard to 'em in Practice: But there is Rea|son to think, this is not the Case; the Things of another World, being unseen things, appear to Men as things of a very doubtful Nature, In ANSWER, I would observe, agreeable to what has been cited from Mr. Locke, Though eternal things were considered in their bare Possibility, if Men acted rationally, they would infinitely outweigh all temporal Things in their Influence on their Hearts. And I would also ob|serve, that the supposing eternal Things not to be fully believed, at least by them who enjoy the Light of the Gospel, does not weaken, but rather strengthen the Argu|ment for the Depravity of Nature. For the eternal World being what God had chiefly in View in the Cre|ation of Men, and the Things of this World being made to be wholly subordinate to the other, Man's State here being only a State of Probation, Preparation & Progression, with respect to the future State, and so eternal Things being in Effect Men's All, their whole Concern: to un|derstand and know which, it chiefly was, that they had Un|derstandingdescriptionPAGE 62given 'em; and it concerning them infinitely more to know the Truth of eternal Things than any other, as all that are not Infidels will own; Therefore, we may undoubtedly conclude, that if Men have not Respect to 'em as real and certain Things, it cannot be for Want of sufficient Evidence of their Truth, to induce 'em so to regard them; especially as to them that live under that Light, which God has appointed as the most proper Ex|hibition of the Nature and Evidence of these Things: But it must be from a dreadful Stupidity of Mind, oc|casioning a sottish Insensibility of their Truth and Im|portance, when manifested by the clearest Evidence.

Between the general sense of disgust with about 50% of my fellow Americans, and unhappiness that the Fourth Turning is, in fact, not yet over, I haven't been in much of a way to do a new episode.  So here's a redux from a few years back,    Wherein a random tweet brings up a quote from Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice, a romantic comedy about dealing with the dangers and temptations of a Crisis period and still liking yourself later.   This is the tweet that started me on this one 6 years ago or thereabouts.  https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/1022955880197836802 Turns out that the issue at hand in that case is tarriffs. The more things change, the more they stay the same Considering it's a story about women trying to find husbands, the word Danger is used remarkably often - twenty times over the course of the novel. For comparison - amazing what a simple word count can help you see -  the word Marriage is used 67 times, Happiness 74 times, Joy 42 times, Silly 12, Evil 22 times, pounds 24. (As I like to say, the importance of arithmetic in history is widely understated.) Danger, then,  is used almost as often as pounds, the standard by which most of the potential husbands are measured.

Darkness, whatever its source, cannot be driven out or overcome by mere force of will or through reason. The fathers reveal to us a darkness that exists within the human heart like no other - insensibility. It is a deadening of the soul and the death of the mind before the death of the body. We all have our vulnerabilities and have experienced wounds on both spiritual and emotional levels. To address this darkness requires an even greater trust in the grace of God to guide us through it and to provide us with what is necessary for healing. Each person is unique and with certain predispositions, including the predisposition to a more melancholic or morose state of mind. Furthermore, the human mind and heart are ever so changeable.  It is also how the evil one can use these things to distort our vision of reality. We can be engaged in the religious and spiritual life and speaking about it and yet this can mask not only a sham piety but something even darker. We can live in the dark so long that it becomes the place of comfort. To move toward the light can be painful, especially if one has experienced trauma.  More than any of the passions the remedy for this darkness consists of relying upon the grace of God and being drawn into the tenderness of Christ's love. When our trust has been destroyed, we must allow Him to rebuild it. Where desire has been lost, we must wait for the Beloved to come to us to stir it into flame. Where wounds are so deep that they seem irreparable, it is only He who is the Lord of Life who can re-create us. --- Text of chat during the group:   00:13:51 Susan M: Thank you for introducing me to the Optina Monastery and Elders! Am buying the recommended book.   00:26:47 John: Are all these internal contradictions the same as hypocrisy, or is that a different malady?   00:39:22 sharonfisher: That's so interesting. I find myself unwilling to be around these really negative people. I love them, but I have my own issues battling depression. It's hard to do both at once.   00:50:23 Ren Witter: I wonder - would these people really appear very negative on the exterior? So much of the description involves teaching or speaking, and most often those who take up that role are very dynamic and charismatic personalities. It seems like the melancholy aspect might kind of hidden.   01:01:36 Kate: Fr. David, Is this also known as sloth?  Or is that a different vice?   01:01:41 Ren Witter: I've been told that this, or something very similar to it, can be caused by a traumatic event - particularly one involving the Church in some way. Are fasting and vigils still the only way to begin fighting it in that case?   01:06:20 Ren Witter: “He and I” is also a very good one.   01:06:43 carol nypaver: Can you please repeat the name of the French priest and his book?   01:07:21 Louise: Gaston Courtois is the name of the French priest.   01:07:31 carol nypaver: Thank you!   01:09:32 David Swiderski: My experience is this often is connected to resentment and lack of detachment. Anyone digging up wounds from the past or worrying about the future cannot help themselves from falling into despair.   01:13:25 Louise: In my clinical experience, it was my willingness as a psychotherapist to be there with the, to remain with them despite the intensity of their pain, which was healing - I did not abandon them as they were experiencing abandonment depression from early childhood.   01:17:10 Cindy Moran: Thank you Father!   01:17:10 Lorraine Green: Thank you Father   01:17:15 David Swiderski: Thanks father!   01:17:17 Rebecca Thérèse: Thank you

Happy are men who yet before they are killed Can let their veins run cold. Whom no compassion fleers Or makes their feet Sore on the alleys cobbled with their brothers. The front line withers. But they are troops who fade, not flowers, For poets' tearful fooling: Men, gaps for filling: Losses, who might have fought Longer; but no one bothers. II And some cease feeling Even themselves or for themselves. Dullness best solves The tease and doubt of shelling, And Chance's strange arithmetic Comes simpler than the reckoning of their shilling. They keep no check on armies' decimation. III Happy are these who lose imagination: They have enough to carry with ammunition. Their spirit drags no pack. Their old wounds, save with cold, can not more ache. Having seen all things red, Their eyes are rid Of the hurt of the colour of blood for ever. And terror's first constriction over, Their hearts remain small-drawn. Their senses in some scorching cautery of battle Now long since ironed, Can laugh among the dying, unconcerned. IV Happy the soldier home, with not a notion How somewhere, every dawn, some men attack, And many sighs are drained. Happy the lad whose mind was never trained: His days are worth forgetting more than not. He sings along the march Which we march taciturn, because of dusk, The long, forlorn, relentless trend From larger day to huger night. V We wise, who with a thought besmirch Blood over all our soul, How should we see our task But through his blunt and lashless eyes? Alive, he is not vital overmuch; Dying, not mortal overmuch; Nor sad, nor proud, Nor curious at all. He cannot tell Old men's placidity from his. VI But cursed are dullards whom no cannon stuns, That they should be as stones. Wretched are they, and mean With paucity that never was simplicity. By choice they made themselves immune To pity and whatever moans in man Before the last sea and the hapless stars; Whatever mourns when many leave these shores; Whatever shares The eternal reciprocity of tears.

The world before anesthesia was brutal -- surgeons inflicted torture on largely conscious patients, hoping to finish an operation as quickly as possible. But all of that changed with the introduction of inhaled ether. This episode covers the context behind the discovery of etherization, with myths about screaming medicinal plants, a “missing recipe” of medieval general anesthesia, 19th century recreational drug use, and a controversy carved in granite.   Sources: Brown, M. A synthesis of the two Gospels read today (Mark 10:32-45 and then Luke 7:36-50), and two saints very similar in essence, although different in external life: Mary of Egypt, and Nectarios of Aegina. In proving their similarity, we discuss the sin of "stony insensibility," and that we MUST suffer if we are to be true Christians (and what this suffering ALWAYS must entail, regardless of whether we suffer in any "physical" or other ways, such as the martyrs, St. Mary and St. Nectarios did). We also discuss humility, and being a servant, as illustrated in the amazing life of St. Nectarios, and the comparison of St. Mary with the woman "who was a sinner," who truly loved our Lord. The crux of the similarity between these two saints, and all who love God is the enigmatic saying of our Lord: "Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little." Here, two kinds of love are described, and we must possess both, if we are to truly be Christians.
