It was clear from Ben's perspective that the eyes of the psychedelic world are now on Australia, and how we move forward as a collective has more import than ever.

This week's episode is something extraordinary. Last week featured a conversation with Di and Ian Haggerty, in a shearing shed filled by 170 people from right around the country. You might remember it ended with Di's passing reference to some amazing insight that Noongar woman Heidi Mippy had shared. Heidi is an author, senior staffer with the Noongar Land Enterprise Group, and so much more. She had been personally invited to this event by Di, in anticipation of further growing the relationships they'd been treasuring with First Nations people. But no one could have anticipated what ended up unfolding while this event was taking place. Ian and I were told of what Di already knew at that point, after the conversation between Di, Ian and I ended. Later in the day, after a farm tour, there was to be a panel conversation. It was to bring Di and Ian together with co-founder of natural intelligence farming, Jane Slattery, and long-time collaborator and organiser of this event, the CEO of Nutrisoil Nakala Maddock. Given the amazing story unfolding in the background, and that we'd ended the morning session talking about the richness on offer for landholders in inviting First Nations people in, I suggested acting on that here and now. Heidi was subsequently invited to join that afternoon dialogue, and thankfully accepted the invitation. This is part of what ensued. This conversation was recorded live at the Haggerty farm in the WA wheatbelt on 24 October 2022. Title slide image: an aerial image of Wagyl (SmartSoil Media). The 20-day test was conducted in partnership with GoodFuels, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable biofuels for the transportation industry, and Wärtsilä, a global leader in power and propulsion technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine market. The assessment was completed September 7. In the first five days of the test the ship used a mix of 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil (MGO) in one of its main auxiliary engines. For the final 15 days of testing, the ship used 100% biofuel. According to GoodFuels, there was a 78% decrease in lifecycle CO2 emissions during the final 15 days of trial compared to marine gas oil emissions.Dutch-flagged Volendam was selected for the test since it was located at the Port of Rotterdam, one of the global ports where GoodFuels operates the infrastructure necessary to provide biofuel waterside fueling services. There is no significant difference for the ship's team members in handling regular fuel oil versus biofuel. The use of a “drop-in” biofuel such as the one tested on Volendam requires no shipboard refitting or special equipment. What Are Biofuels? The advanced biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation.Holland America Line's 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage Returns After a DecadeHolland America Line is continuing to bolster its longer voyages departing from a North America homeport, and the 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage is the newest addition. A project that will see some of Perth's most popular streets transformed into shopping strips — without cars — has launched in Perth. Spearheaded by the Telethon Kids Institute, ‘less cars, more people' will see streetscapes all over Australia redesigned to remove cars from high street shopping strips. The project looks at 10 ‘car-centric' shopping centres all over Australia that are heavy on vehicles parking in front of cafes and shops in highly populated areas. In Perth, this includes Leederville's Oxford Street, South Terrace in Fremantle and Belvedere Street in Belmont. Telethon Kids Institute research fellow Matthew Mclaughlin said redesigning shopping strips would be good for business as well as the physical, mental and social health of our communities. Sunrise correspondent Matt Tinney has the details.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Pickle District is an artsy pocket of Perth that has become the hub for many art galleries, design and photography studios, boutique theaters, all nestled between Leederville and Northbridge. New fears have emerged as the trendy district could be "destroyed" by a $25 million application to build a large-scale Bunnings store, with a childcare centre and retail and hospitality tenancies in a five-story complex. Pickle District's Town Team spokesman and artist Jon Denaro told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the development would be devastating. "What's happening is we've just started to make it groovy. And as you can imagine, it's the usual story where industry wants to come and knock it all down," Mr Denaro said.  "We've put our flag in the sand. We want to make a stand because we think this is the perfect place to experiment with the idea for some more accessibility and visibility to the arts. And that is really vital for the cultural ecology here in WA." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello to you listening in Leederville, Australia!Coming to you Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga."...human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places - and there are so many - where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us is itself a marvelous victory." [Dr. Howard Zinn, inspired by the life & spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer]Story Prompt: Imagine you have the power to inspire people to read, write, speak out, solve problems for our greater humanity in defiance of all that is bleak, grim. Write that story! Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! It’s interesting to see that so many digital marketing experts and trainers like to draw examples of successful businesses on social media as being big brands. “look at this amazing thing that Nike did!” or “Dove beauty products really reached their target audience with this campaign.” When you’re a small swimwear store in Yeppoon or a tiny artisan baker in Leederville, these comparisons don’t feel very helpful. Nike has marketing teams across the globe. Dove ploughs tens of millions of dollars into marketing every year. You are lucky to have $3000 to spend this year. These giants of successful marketing have access to resources that you don’t. They have access to people that you don’t. And they’re in the position to make super creative content that people want to see. You’re stuck making messages that you want to put across. And that’s one of the biggest differences between you and them. How do you find a balance between what you want to say and what people want to see? 1.    Start with a sensible goal in mind In big business, they talk about brand awareness and marketplace recognition. In small business, we tend to talk more about marketing’s return on investment. And for us, that can only be measured in sales. Not in metrics like engagement, reach or brand recall. While you’re not expected to think like a corporation, you can take inspiration from them in how you approach your marketing. And most of your marketing effort as a small business needs to be geared to the same stuff that the big guys gear towards. The Awareness stage of the customer journey. This is where you are introducing your brand, products and services to cold prospects. They don’t know you. They don’t want you. But they might one day need you. Gearing too much of your marketing and message towards getting people to buy from you straight away without knowing who or what you are is just not going to work with the kinds of tiny budgets we’re looking at from a small business. And this is why the big guys don’t tend to ask you to buy anything until they’re certain that you know who they are and they’re confident that you’re almost ready to buy. 2.    Think about the life that your  customer leads It sounds trite, but it really is important for you to understand who your customer is and how they live. Assuming that everyone is focused on you and your needs as a business is egotistical and delusional. You are barely a consideration in your customer’s life, even when they’re shopping around. Your business is the centre of your world. But it’s not the centre of theirs. So to get yourself out of your own bubble of self-importance, you need to understand what your customer desires, requires and hopes to acquire. This means placing your product or service in the middle of all of that. Not forcing a message down about how good you are and why they should choose you. Lead with the problem that someone has, then let them know that there is a solution, suggest that you are the solution, and give them a simple path toward securing that solution. This way you’re starting off with the problem that someone needs solving before you then suggest your solution for that problem.
