Donna Hicks: Leading with Dignity Donna Hicks is an Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University and the former Deputy Director of the Program on International Conflict Analysis and Resolution (PICAR). She has facilitated dialogues in numerous unofficial diplomatic efforts and was a consultant to the BBC in Northern Ireland, where she co-facilitated a television series, Facing the Truth, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. She is the author of Dignity: It's Essential Role in Resolving Conflict and Leading with Dignity: How to Create a Culture That Brings Out the Best in People*. Everyone wants to be treated in a way that shows they matter. We may differ in status, but we are all equal in dignity. In this episode, Donna and I explore how appreciating dignity can help us bring out the best in people. Key Points Everyone wants to be treated in a way that shows they matter. Dignity is different than respect. Everyone has dignity, but not everyone deserves respect. A major misconception of dignity is that we receive our worth from external sources. We're at our best when connected to our own dignity, connected to the dignity of others, and connected the dignity of something bigger. Start with vulnerability and empathy. These open the doors to connecting with your own dignity and the dignity of others. We may differ in status, but we are all equal in dignity. Today's story comes from Elizabeta Jevtic-Somlai. Originally from Serbia, now living in Phoenix, Arizona. Liz knows what it's like to flee a country she loved and to find new roots, a new way in a strange and unwelcoming country. I have the privilege of working with her at Their Story is Our Story, where we are working to tell the stories of refugees to change the perception, reception, and legislation in a way that supports people fleeing violence and persecution. Liz lost a great deal when she escaped her beautiful country. But she says, she will not lose who she is or where she came from.  Here is a bit more about Liz before we jump into her full story.  Even in her youth, Liz understood that education can better lives, and she loves to learn. She holds a BA in International Relations, a BA, a MA in German/Holocaust Studies, and a Ph.D. in International Conflict Analysis. She is a passionate advocate for human rights, more specifically minority, refugee, women, and children's rights, and has presented, researched, and published much on the topic of long-term (re-)integration. She comes to TSOS with extensive professional experience in operations and policy planning at the U.N. level and curriculum and course development in higher education. As a refugee herself, Liz knows that trials are part of the journey and that life is precious. She is always ready for a good laugh, loves engaging young minds in meaningful discussions, spending time with her family, and embracing new cultures, people, and food. Liz said we can educate people with personal stories - we connect to them and change our perception of that label (refugee). With that, people change their actions. Over time, we see an increase in people wanting to help with food, clothing, integration into communities. Today:  Get a first-hand experience of what it's like to sneak out of your country at the young age of 14 The trials in starting over How Liz broke the cycle Why sharing the stories of refugees matters How to get involved and help She wants you to know her story is not meant to be a sad story. It is a story of a survivor. With that, let's listen in and gear up for what's next. Serbia's struggle for neutrality and sovereignty faces obstruction from Brussels and Washington, who wish to bring Serbia under the European Union and American spheres of political influence. Over the several few weeks, the Serbian people and the Serbian state itself were a focus for international politics, as the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, was effectively forced to sign a document of normalization between Belgrade and the Government of Kosovo in Pristina, which ultimately proved to be more of a vassalage treaty than anything else. A few weeks prior in Montenegro, a coalition of parties representing the Serbian people of Montenegro managed to secure a majority in the country's recent parliamentary elections. What does this success in the elections mean for the people of Montenegro, both those who identify as Serbs or Montenegrins? What kind of an impact will this change in government have for the small Balkan nation of only 600,000 inhabitants? Joining Ivan Bilokapic – Europa Terra Nostra vice-chairman and podcast host – and providing further insight into the current political affairs in Serbia and Montenegro is Stefan Brakus, a Serb scholar with a Bachelors degree in War Studies and Masters degree in International Conflict Analysis from the University of Kent, UK.
