For Kevin Jurge, what began as a sore throat in 2013, led to the removal of his tonsils, and that led to a diagnosis of Stage IV head and neck cancer. Kevin's oncologist said Kevin didn't have to undergo chemotherapy but did require radiation treatment to attack cancerous lymph nodes. He said the regimen made his throat feel like sunburn, pain which lingered months after the conclusion of his treatment. He also lost his ability to taste. However, Kevin survived, can once again taste food and beverage and seeks to help others with his book, “Go To Your Happy Place.”

S03E11 – the Role of HBCUs in Rural Education, an Interview with President Logan Hampton of Lane College. In this episode of the Rural Voice, we interviewed Dr. Logan Hampton President of Lane College in Jackson Tennessee. We open the discussion discussing the role of Jackson Tennessee as both a small urban and rural location. We discuss how perception of what constitutes rural versus urban can vary depending on students experience and perception. The episode shifts to discussing Lane College which is a traditional black college in Tennessee. Dr Hampton discusses the demographics of the types of students who attend, offering accessibility to students who might not consider higher education. Lane is housed on a former plantation and is now an institution of higher education. This story demonstrates how spaces with a strained history can be repurposed to serve students in need. We discussed how HBCUs serve an important role in rural education. Lane has a religious affiliation, and we discuss how religion can also provide a framework for values and ethics. Dr Hampton discusses why higher education spaces can be capitalized on finding common ground for difficult conversations. He proposes that higher education should be used for hosting and facilitating difficult conversations to find common ground. In other words, let's stop focusing on the differences and find love of our fellow people. We end the episode discussing enrollment numbers nationally and locally at Lane regarding people of color and gender. Bio Logan Hampton was named 10th President of Lane College by the Lane College Board of Trustees on June 12, 2014. Dr. Hampton earned a doctorate in higher education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a master's degree in student personnel services from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., and a bachelor's degree in biology from Arkansas Tech University. Prior to coming to Lane College, Dr. Hampton served in numerous student services capacities at UALR including Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Before UALR, Hampton held positions at Texas A & M University, Texas Christian University, and the University of Central Arkansas. In addition to working as a higher education administrator, Dr. Hampton is an ordained elder in full connection of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME). He served twenty-four years as a pastor in the Arkansas Region of the First Episcopal District of the CME Church. He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three adult children: Elise, Crystal and Logan III.

For his last service as interim pastor at First Baptist Brother McIntyre expressed how difficult this service was for him. He had come to love the people of First Baptist and would miss them in the days ahead. He then encouraged the congregation to think about what they have to offer for Jackson, Tennessee and beyond. He prayed that each person would discover who they are and what they have to offer. Don't hold to yourself your gift of God.
At this evening service Brother McIntyre elaborated on his decision to move on from his position as interim pastor at First Baptist in Jackson. Next Sunday September 25, 1988 will be his final service. His future plans had been for retirement and spending time with his grandchildren but instead the Lord had something else planned for him. He had been called to the position of Director of Evangelism and Education Study and Research for the Baptist World Alliance for the next two years. He will be entrusted with helping to create, develop, enhance and improve the 134 Baptist conventions, unions and fellowships around the world. He indicated this was like a new career for him after serving 31 years as a pastor and 10 years with the Sunday School Board. He expressed his appreciation to all those at First Baptist who mean so much to him. His message for the evening was of Mary anointing the Lord with the expensive ointment. Jesus knew his time was short and this expression meant so much to Him. Brother McIntyre challenged the congregation to do like Mary by offering special gifts and services to the Lord.
Dr. McIntyre began his message talking about the voices of our lives. Our lives are shaped by the voices we hear including our parents, our children, our grandchildren, our teachers, our friends and great preachers. The Bible speaks to all generations. To hear the voice of God we must also have a quiet time of prayer. We must respond to the right voice of God Himself.
Brother McIntyre began the service telling about hymn writer B.B. McKinney who wrote many hymns including "Have Faith in God." Brother McIntyre then read all four verses of the hymn followed by the congregation singing the entire hymn. Jesus cares for us as Christians and faith is the victory over sorrows and reverses. We know that our Redeemer liveth. Faith is the victory. Faith is the way.
Dr. McIntyre preached that all have sinned, but there is no period there. In Christ we shall be made alive. In Christ you are free to be a child of God, free to be all that you can be and free to be all that God wants you to be. You are free from the tyranny of sin and free from the penalty of sin. There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. Know the truth and the truth shall set you free.
Dr. McIntyre's message title for this morning service was also the theme for several weeks of emphasis at First Baptist. There are many ways to show your faith. You can show it in your church, in your family life, in your community relationship and community activities. All Christians should search out new and different ways where they can give evidence to those who meet them day by day that they indeed do live in a faith that is beyond them. Brother McIntyre encouraged the congregation to seek out at least one new and different way to give evidence that you belong to Jesus Christ. He said it will be the joy of your life. Show your faith.
This message by Brother McIntyre is from Psalm 2, which is a Messianic Psalm, describes the battle between God and His enemies and His ultimate final rule over the earth. This Psalm is God's exhortation to love His Son. Blessed are those who take refuge in Him.
Dr. McIntyre states that the question asked by the author of the Hebrew letter, "How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation" is essentially asking "What are you doing with your salvation?" This verse was written to Hebrew Christians. From this we learn it is a tragedy to ignore the salvation given us as Christians. How will we escape the displeasure of God if we treat such a valuable and wonderful thing as though it was of no consequence at all. God gave his only Son. Do we as Christians put the right value on the gift of being God's child. We need to use the gift everyday.
Dr. McIntyre asked the question,"What have you done for Jesus in this one life. One life. That's it." The Scripture for this message states to be careful how you live and live as children of light. Brother McIntyre also spoke of memories. Thank God for family and friends of yesteryear. He commented that his dear wife Sue had been gone 14 years now and he had so many good memories of good times and joy with her.
This beautiful message by Brother McIntyre begins with the history behind John's writing of Revelation on the Isle of Patmos. The King's golden sash denotes the wealth of all eternity. The sash tied about the chest covering the heart of the Master denotes the love that flows in ways never able to imagine.
Today's message was based on the healing of the lame man by the name of Jesus by Peter. Dr. McIntyre preached that we all have capacities and gifts but sin can destroy these talents. However, the power we have in the name of Jesus will endure as we avail ourselves of it.
Tonight's message by Brother McIntyre was a review of the Biblical basis for mission and the power that God has promised to those who would be involved in the great missionary enterprise. He focused this evening on First Baptist's missionary folks and upon the reason why the church is interested in them and the reason as a church First Baptist is engaged in such activity. Mention was made of the Hampshers serving as missionaries in Portugal.
The Book of Ezekiel is a book of measurements and in this book Ezekiel spells out many boundaries. Many people today want no bounds on their lives but in this passage we see a picture of boundaries of life and some degrees by which life can be lived. Dr. McIntyre challenged the congregation to make a fresh and new commitment that they will go deeper with the Lord in their Christian life.
Dr. McIntyre shared at this evening service that Herod came face to face with the Master and could have known all he could want to know about God, but didn't have the courage to do it. People today can ridicule Christ too and turn their back on Him and walk away. It is all in what they choose to do.
This morning Dr. McIntyre spoke about a danger Christians face. All believers need to examine the foundation they are building their life on. Some Christians will live all their Christian lives and have no rewards when Heaven comes. There will be degrees of awards. Examine your life to determine you are doing all you can for the work of the Lord.
Brother McIntyre shared that his wife's favorite verse taught that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord. The Apostle Peter likewise gave advice on how to defeat our dark days. Remember that our trials are not forever. We are the elect of God. He is working out His plans and we are a part of it. We are born again into His family and we can rejoice in His goodness, love and greatness. Draw strength from Him by going to God in prayer. God is refining us, helping us, protecting us, caring for us and touching us.
To hold truth in unrighteousness Dr. McIntyre preached that you need to remember there is one God and to worship Him. You also need to remember to not exchange the truth of God for a lie and live for what God says not man.

The morning service by Dr. McIntyre was on the demon possessed man of the Gadarenes. When Jesus came the healing touch of Jesus changed his life. His healing touch can change your life too.
In contrast to the life of King Saul that was a progression downward the life of Saul/Paul was a life of progression upward. Dr. McIntyre challenged the congregation to come to an acknowledgement of where they were in their spiritual pilgrimage so that they would be enabled under God to do something about it. As with Paul strive toward a progression with God's help so that you will see great gains in your progression upward.
Many lives are mentioned in Scripture for the purpose of showing how the grace of God touched them. David was one such person who was given a task to prepare for the temple but not the completion. Solomon got the glory but David was in the Lord's will in the early preparation. Many today, Dr. McIntyre preached, who serve best we may not know about. Many time it is not given to us to finish a task but to still be busy in the preparation of the task. The service was concluded by Dr. McIntyre asking what each persons assigned task was for the building of this corner of the kingdom of God.
Verse 3 of Psalm 60 says "Thou hast made us drink of the wine of astonishment." It could be the bitter wine of discipline or the sweet wine of wonder. Dr. McIntyre followed up under the sweet wine scenario. Have we lost the capacity to be surprised. We need to keep a sense of wonder alive in our hearts. Don't lose the childlike heart of being able to be surprised about the work of God.
This Independence Day weekend included this sermon on where liberty leads. Liberty leads to life or death, heaven or hell, service to others or service to self, satisfaction of life or surliness, deliverance or destruction, happiness or helplessness, purpose for our lives and our church or helplessness, purpose or drifting, power or puniness and in conclusion Christ or chaos.
Dr. McIntyre preached that from Genesis to Revelation we find references to "light." If it is Jesus there is no darkness that can put it out.
For this Father's Day message Brother McIntyre spoke on the example and nobility of the life of David. Here we have something to challenge the business of being a father in how we relate to our children and families and how we relate to our heavenly father. The vows and affirmations of David should be our standard today.
The Scripture for this evening service was on the transfiguration where Jesus' essential deity shown forth through his earthly flesh and the fullness of the Godhead was visible. Brother McIntyre then spoke on the necessity of Jesus shining thru us. As the service came to a close Brother McIntyre asked all the Deacons and Sunday School Teachers to stand at various location throughout the sanctuary and then asked the congregation to gather around those who had ministered to them. This was for the purpose of group prayer. Dr. McIntyre asked everyone to pray for the church search committee for it work and for what their work will mean in the life of this church so that Jesus can become the Christ to thousands and thousands of people.
Brother McIntyre began the morning service with two questions. "Who is the best Christian you know?" and "Did anyone think of you?" The Christian life is a life of development and growth. The tragedy is if you stop growing. So the question now is, "Are you the best Christian you can be?"
In this inspiring sermon Dr. McIntyre says, "The praises of the Christian life is one of the great and wonderful and sweet fragrances that we can present to the throne of Christ, the most wonderful thing in all the world. Do you have power? The key to it all is faith and in the exercise of faith we have praise. Praise to Him. Praise God from whom all blessings flow."
Dr. McIntyre preached that Christians are the eternal children of the King. You are worth so much more than you think you are. Act upon on how valuable God says you are and grow in a Christ like manner.
This message came from the passage on John's vision of the New Jerusalem. And as that city is designed perfectly balanced so does God want that in our Christian life. The time, investment, love, concern and thinking we give to God should not be out of the leftovers of our lives but equal to the amount of energy and thought and persuasion of ourselves and of our willingness to live life with whatever comes to the achievement of our goals of life and breadth of life and not out of our leftover time but out of purposeful times that we will make this equal - the balance of life.
