The U.S. Army War College (USAWC) recently hosted its 2025 Homeland Defense Symposium, gathering experts to tackle the complex issues of defending the homeland. A key focus was clarifying the difference between Homeland Security (law enforcement and emergency response) and Homeland Defense (military protection against external threats). Bert Tussing, Director of the Homeland Defense and Security Issues Group at the USAWC's Center for Strategic Leadership, joined host Ron Granieri in the studio to discuss the major themes of the symposium. Participants emphasized the importance of preparedness, highlighting that future conflicts are likely to reach U.S. soil. The discussions emphasized the need for a whole-of-society approach, integrating not just federal agencies but also state and local governments, the private sector, and the general public into defense strategies. The term homeland defense may be unfamiliar to many listeners more accustomed to the phrase Homeland Security. These differences are significant even if the policies are intended to be complementary. Bert Tussing is Director of the Homeland Defense and Security Issues Group at the U.S. Army War College's Center for Strategic Leadership (CSL). He joined CSL in October 1999, following nearly 25 years in the United States Marine Corps. He is a distinguished graduate of both the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the Naval War College and holds master's degrees in National Security Strategy and Military Strategic Studies. In May of 2014 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters by Northwestern State University in recognition of his work in Homeland Security, Homeland Defense and Educational initiatives surrounding those topics. The views expressed in this presentation are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect those of the U.S. Army War College, U.S. Army, or Department of Defense. S03E11 – the Role of HBCUs in Rural Education, an Interview with President Logan Hampton of Lane College. In this episode of the Rural Voice, we interviewed Dr. Logan Hampton President of Lane College in Jackson Tennessee. We open the discussion discussing the role of Jackson Tennessee as both a small urban and rural location. We discuss how perception of what constitutes rural versus urban can vary depending on students experience and perception. The episode shifts to discussing Lane College which is a traditional black college in Tennessee. Dr Hampton discusses the demographics of the types of students who attend, offering accessibility to students who might not consider higher education. Lane is housed on a former plantation and is now an institution of higher education. This story demonstrates how spaces with a strained history can be repurposed to serve students in need. We discussed how HBCUs serve an important role in rural education. Lane has a religious affiliation, and we discuss how religion can also provide a framework for values and ethics. Dr Hampton discusses why higher education spaces can be capitalized on finding common ground for difficult conversations. He proposes that higher education should be used for hosting and facilitating difficult conversations to find common ground. In other words, let's stop focusing on the differences and find love of our fellow people. We end the episode discussing enrollment numbers nationally and locally at Lane regarding people of color and gender. Bio Logan Hampton was named 10th President of Lane College by the Lane College Board of Trustees on June 12, 2014. Dr. Hampton earned a doctorate in higher education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a master's degree in student personnel services from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., and a bachelor's degree in biology from Arkansas Tech University. Prior to coming to Lane College, Dr. Hampton served in numerous student services capacities at UALR including Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Before UALR, Hampton held positions at Texas A & M University, Texas Christian University, and the University of Central Arkansas. In addition to working as a higher education administrator, Dr. Hampton is an ordained elder in full connection of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME). He served twenty-four years as a pastor in the Arkansas Region of the First Episcopal District of the CME Church. He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three adult children: Elise, Crystal and Logan III.

530. Katy Morlas Shannon returns to talk about her children's historical fiction, Sharcropper's Daughter. "Born a sharecropper's daughter on a Louisiana plantation, Frances Darbonne wonders if she will ever escape the rural poverty that has plagued her family for generations. When Frances learns that going to school requires her to abandon the French language she has spoken all her life, she struggles to reconcile her Cajun identity with her desire to read and write. Determined to Americanize its citizens, Louisiana instructs its educators to eradicate this heritage language, stigmatizing the Cajun people and using shame and threats of violence to silence them... Inspired by the author's grandmother, Sharecropper's Daughter vividly portrays a child's experience of World War II and prominently features the Louisiana Maneuvers, the military training of 400,000 troops not far from Frances's home." The cannabis plant has more than 80 chemical compounds, of which the two most known are THC (marijuana) and CBD. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a hemp derivative that does not elicit abuse or dependence, and research suggests it could potentially help health conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain, arthritis, and addiction, among others. How do CBD products get into the hands of people who struggle with these conditions, and how do they compare to pharmaceutical products? On today's episode of Highway to Health, host David Kemp spoke with Chad Collins, co-founder and CEO, and Reggie Gatewood, co-founder, both of Corganics, to talk about the basics of the CBD market and what Corganics is doing to facilitate improved patient access to CBD products for health conditions.Kemp, Collins, and Gatewood also discussed…The origin story, mission, and vision of CorganicsHow Corganics educates healthcare providers to educate patients on the CBD market and productsWhat Corganics is doing to advocate for patient access to their productsGatewood explained the two key reasons Corganics exists. “One in five Americans is using some sort of CBD… Three in five see it as valid medical therapy. But the two big issues as to why we do what we do are: healthcare professionals are not involved… We educate them and the patients. And also, the wild inconsistency and the quality. We've got to treat it like it's truly a pharmaceutical grade.”“For us at Corganics, there's the future of prescriptions, and then there's the ‘Wild West' retail version of CBD. And our quality is off the charts—it is more like pharma. So, we self-regulate versus what you find down the street here,” Collins added.Chad Collins is the co-founder and CEO of Corganics and the author of Run to Fire. Collins previously served as Vice President of Galderma and President and CEO of the Boston Select Asset Group and has racked up twenty years of experience in the healthcare system, including biopharmaceuticals, payor systems, medical devices, and more. He holds a BBA in Marketing from Texas Tech University, an MBA in General Management from Cornell University, and he attended the Executive Education Program at Harvard Business School.Reggie Gatewood is co-founder of Corganics and previously worked at Sanofi in a multitude of roles, including US Sales Lead, Specialty Channels, Head, Leadership Development and Business Planing, Sanofi North America, and Vice President, Business Excellence. Gatewood attended Northwestern State University, where he earned a BA in journalism and public relations with a marketing emphasis. Gatewood is certified in Prosci Change Management from The Life Cycle Institute, is an Associate Certified Coach from the International Coaching Federation, and has a Coach Advantage certification from The Pyramid Resource Group, Inc.
That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
The guest of this episode is Northwestern State University Professor Matt DeFord who talks about the value of being present with the people around you and in the environment you are in. Matt talks about the importance of setting healthy boundaries and how that can help us be present and also set the tone to empower others. This also set the stage to talk about the importance for us as Servant Leaders to help those around us set healthy boundaries. Matt talked about leadership in hurricane response, at the University, in his Church responsibilities and in his personal life while displaying the power of getting to know the people around him and learning their unique strengths and gifts. This allows him to find the appropriate ways to delegate, appreciate, and congratulate the people around him to harness their potential and help them grow. He teaches us that we can set a vision and allow the people around us to use their individual processes to complete the tasks in ways that can amaze us. Just because the process is different than our own doesn't mean it is wrong and often we can learn from the way other's do things differently. He discusses ways that his creativity is thwarted while displaying avenues where we can improve creativity in our organizations. Challenges are the opportunities that life gives us and balance really is a myth, so it is up to us to choose where to focus our priorities at a given time. When we learn to harness the complete team, we can expand our ability to meet our organization's priorities through delegation and empowerment. We can all be a leader wherever we are when we are willing to serve each other and build one another up! Matt DeFord is the son of hippie converts. They met each other hitchhiking, then found religion after crossing the plains with their thumbs out. He grew up in the Midwest and Texas. After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the South Africa Johannesburg mission, he met and married Canadian Julie Heggie while attending Ricks College (BYU-Idaho). They have seven children and live in Natchitoches, Louisiana where he is a professor of Art at Northwestern State University. He was Chair of the Department of Fine and Graphic Arts for twelve years and has served in the church as bishop and stake president while also fulfilling his professional and familial responsibilities. Matt has never sought out leadership or considered himself much of a leader, but the opportunities have presented themselves to him and he has worked to serve those around him. Mike Pittman is in his second season at Northwestern State after making his way to the Lady Demons from Alcorn State. Pittman served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Lady Braves. He served in the same role the season prior at Paul Quinn College in Dallas after two years as the head coach at Kimball High School, also in the Dallas area. "I am excited to have coach Pittman join the Demon family," Nimz said. "He brings a lot of experience to the court both at the college and high school levels. "He was part of turning around a college program and was a big help in signing very talented young student-athletes. I believe his dynamic personality will be a big asset in recruiting and fundraising. On top of that, he is from Louisiana and has established relationships with the coaches in the area." With Alcorn, Pittman helped the Lady Braves lead the nation in three defensive categories -- steals per game, forced turnovers per game and total steals, a trio of categories in which the Lady Demons have excelled over the years. Alcorn also saw marked offensive improvement following Pittman's arrival, boosting its scoring margin by more than 10 points per game while committing an average of nine fewer turnovers per contest than the previous season. The improved offensive production led to a six-point jump in free throw percentage and a drop in opponent field goal percentage. Before moving to Alcorn, Pittman saw similar improvements in his season at Paul Quinn College, ranking in the top 20 nationally in points per game, field goal percentage, rebounds per game and steals per game during the 2018-19 season. A team that advanced to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association semi-finals. Pittman served as the offensive coordinator of a team that saw an 11 percent increase in scoring. The jump to 76.0 point per game ranked 13th in the NAIA at the end of the season coinciding with a 42.5 percent effort from the field, a 3.6 percent increase under the direction of Pittman. Not just an offensive mind, Pittman oversaw a defensive unit that averaged 13.0 steals and 43.0 rebounds per game, ranking 8th and 14th nationally respectively. A New Orleans native, Pittman began his coaching career in the Louisiana prep scene getting his start at North DeSoto High School before his first head coaching job at Grambling Lab a year later. After a handful of years at Minden High School, Pittman made the move to Texas spending 12 years at Ryan High School in Denton before taking the position at Kimball. Along the way Pittman has been closely tied to the collegiate game serving as a camp instructor at Louisiana Tech, North Texas and the University of Texas from 2000 through 2011. Pittman's investment in his players, others, and the game of basketball extends off the court spearheading multiple community service activities during his career. He co-founded an after-school tutorial program at Ryan HS, provided skills training for low-income kids through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and oversaw over 200 youth statewide in partnership with religious organizations in sports initiatives among many other activities. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chefranjohn/support

About Nikki Boyd and Mahaba Healthcare: Experienced Chief Executive Officer with a demonstrated history of working in the hospital & health care industry. Skilled in Teamwork, Critical Thinking, Logistics Management, and Interpersonal Communication. Strong business development professional with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ole Miss and a Bachelor of Arts focused in Criminal Justice and Corrections from Northwestern State University. We help nurses define their careers and ensure hospitals get reliable staffing. Our experience working and earning as per diem and travel nurses informed the dream to start Mahaba Healthcare Staffing Agency. However, having worked with enough healthcare facilities across the US, it was evident that many employer-nurse gaps still needed to be filled, and fast. Full-time nurses working as Telemetry nurses and PCU nurses are growing increasingly dissatisfied with the conditions and inflexibilities of their roles and workplaces. Professionals like yourself deserve a working environment where you are appreciated and treated the same way as their permanent staff without fearing burnout. Healthcare facilities face increased pressure due to surges in patient numbers, and they don't have enough capable nurses to handle the volatility. As a result, they risk losing their JHACO certifications. These hospitals, telemetry units, and progressive care facilities reach out to us because they fail to secure the top nursing staff for relevant roles independently. Mahaba Healthcare staffing builds bridges between honest and dedicated nurses looking for accommodating employers who fit their schedules. Our straightforward solutions for these candidates and employers create an easy-to-follow experience that you should take advantage of today. Our Mission To create exceptional staffing solutions that help bridge the gap between nurses and healthcare employers via sound professional support, extraordinary dedication, and safe and ethical practices to bring forth a reality of seamless healthcare delivery in contribution to helping to solve the future problems of the healthcare industry today. Our Vision To become the leader in delivering staffing solutions to progressive care nurses, telemetry nurses, and hospitals in the US while setting the bar higher for workplace excellence and safety standards.

Liz Webb Hebert, Chair of the Lafayette City Council and representative for City Council District 3, joined Discover Lafayette to discuss her passion for service at the local level and working to improve the region's quality of life Liz Webb Hebert and Nanette Cook were selected as council chairperson and vice chair in 2021. Photo by Brad Bowie of The Advocate. Growing up in Carencro, Louisiana, and the baby girl of her family with four older brothers, Liz learned early about the importance of speaking up effectively for herself. A lifelong resident of Lafayette Parish, she graduated from Teurlings Catholic High School and Northwestern State University. After college, she was blessed to work for wonderful bosses who gave her free rein in using her skills in an imaginative way: first for Leonard Louvierre of Zea Rotisserie & Bar in Lafayette, and then with Greg Davis and Pam Deville at the Cajundome Arena & Convention Center. The freedom she was afforded to execute her ideas to grow business opportunities are experiences she will always cherish. Yet, Liz was called to explore service at a higher level as a young adult. "I've always wanted to make our community better," Hebert explained, and her experience in Leadership Lafayette led her to better understand the issues facing our city and parish and how she could get involved in the process as an elected official. In 2015, her mentors approached her to consider running for the Lafayette City-Parish Council which had an open seat upon the retirement of then-Councilman Keith Patin. With encouragement from her family and husband, Aaron Hebert, she leapt into the race, which included two formidable opponents who she describes as "incredible, friendly, courteous and kind." She made the runoff and was elected to serve her first term on the Lafayette City-Parish Council which began in January 2016. "Fix the Charter" was passed by Lafayette Parish residents and now we have two councils: the Lafayette City Council and the Lafayette Parish Council. Liz ran and was elected to serve in Lafayette Council District 3 and assumed office January 2020. The Lafayette City Council. Pictured from left to right: Nanette Cook, Andy Naquin, Glenn Lazard, Pat Lewis, and Liz Webb Hebert. District 3 has 26,000 residents, and Liz says they are a joy to represent; they stay informed of the issues, are engaged, well-educated, and enjoy the highest wealth per capita among other districts in our city. Typical issues brought to her attention by citizens include trash, rezoning issues, or concerns about not getting services. Proactive in her outreach to constituents, she attends Homeowners' Associations of subdivisions in her district so she can stay on top of issues of importance. Liz always encourages people to first call 311 or go online to the 311 website to report concerns such as panhandling, animal control issues, noise complaints, etc. She also wants you to reach out to her via her Facebook page to message her about problems you need help with or to use the Next Door app. Liz Hebert also sends out a monthly newsletter to keep people abreast of issues and you can subscribe here. She fields calls and emails for those of us outside of her district to request her support for the issues facing their neighborhood and welcomes us all to inform her of current concerns. "I want my constituents to call me so we can address issues. I can't fix a problem if I don't know about it. People may be upset about an issue for a year before they call me and I could have helped them early on." Liz Webb Hebert encouraging people to reach out for help. Several initiatives to improve the quality of life in our community have seen fruition under Liz's stewardship. The first one that has been visible to to the community is the Adopt-A Bus Stop Lafayette. Liz was approached by friends to see how they could help when they realized how many people, both employees and strangers,

Once again, Colin plays "Six Degrees of Court Carney," this time with fellow LSU veteran and historian James MacDonald. As is the case with Colin, James is a Damn Yankee who moved to the South as an adult and has never looked back. Oh, and like Colin, he married a southerner. James teaches at Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches (pronounced "Nackadish"), a town so southern that it was the setting for the film Steel Magnolias. James talks about the teaching life, including how to cope with educating during the pandemic, wrestling with technology, what it's like to handle a 6-5 course load, and the lessons learned and not learned in graduate school. Also, James talks about growing up in New Jersey, visiting battlefields as a kid, his natural love of teaching, first-year grad school monasticism, and the unbearable heaviness of Phil Morgan's Slave Counterpoint.
Growing up poor in Marthaville, Louisiana in the 1940s, Big Rob Gentry considered only four things in his hardscrabble world to be indispensable: Jesus Christ, Earl Long, the Sears and Roebuck catalog, and KWKH. The latter was brought into his home courtesy of a cabinet-sized radio that his father saved up to purchase for the family. Each morning and evening, the Gentrys would gather ‘round the radio to listen to country music, news and entertainment beamed out of Shreveport, Louisiana. His favorite program was The Louisiana Hayride. For the second episode in our six-part series produced in partnership with Louisiana Public Broadcasting, All Y’all spoke with Gentry about how the country music showcase—which broadcast live from Shreveport Municipal Auditorium from 1948 until 1960—shaped his life. Gentry is the retired editor and publisher of The Sabine Index and a Louisiana Political Hall of Fame inductee who donated a sizable collection of Hayride-related artifacts, documents and memorabilia to The Cammie G. Henry Research Center at Northwestern State University in 2014. If you’ve not heard the first episode in this series, give it a listen to hear country music historian and author Dr. Tracey Laird discuss some of the same things that Gentry brings up in this episode, including the “hooping and hollering” that set the Louisiana Hayride apart from its more hidebound competitor, the Grand Ole Opry: https://www.allyallblog.com/2020/08/10/louisiana-hayride-dr-tracey-laird/ The All Y'all podcast is supported by Marilynn's Place, Rhino Coffee and Maccentric. Monica studied Gifted education at Northwestern State University and is currently teaching Gifted to 1st through 6th grades at St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. Getting an education isn’t easy, but it’s an accomplishment worth all the long days and late nights. Programs such as Complete LA are meant to alleviate some of the pressures that keep returning students and adult learners from achieving their educational goals. But even with those sorts of helpful programs, sometimes it’s still hard to imagine our goals actually becoming reality. If you need inspiration or a bit of hope, listen to Yonna Pasch tell her incredible story of how she faced and overcame challenges by becoming her own best advocate. “If you know what you want to get done and what you want to accomplish, you are the best person to make that happen,” she said during this installment of Beyond 1894. “And I learned it through my cancer journey, my internship, and the doctoral program here at Tech.” Pasch is the Director of Student Activities and Organizations at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. She recently graduated with a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Louisiana Tech. She is the perfect example of how universities within the UL system work together to advance the education of our state. On this special episode of “Off The Cuff,” Justin is joined by financial aid directors at three institutions — Lauren Jackson of Northwestern State University, Francisco Valines of Florida International University, and Wayne Kruger of St. Petersburg College — to discuss how their schools are using the emergency stabilization funds allocated to higher education in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The group also talks about outstanding points of confusion within the legislation their institutions are still wrestling with, and shares advice for schools seeking to best distribute their funds to students in need. Gaining a competitive advantage with a brain-healthy culture. Neuroplasticity and how it factors into brain health. Key Takeaways: Technology rewires and changes the brain – it can overwhelm the brain. You are what you eat. As a leader, invest in yourself and in your people – we are all in performance industries, so help your people to perform. In this episode, Christina Martini and Dave Kenney discuss: Dave’s career journey and his neuroscience and psychology studies. The importance of brain health – not just mental health - on your well-being and leadership success. The impacts of stress, anxiety, and depression on brain health and what leaders need to know about brain health. Key Takeaways: You have to have a brain first approach to your health in all respects, including food, sleep, and physical activity. While some stress may be productive, there is a point where it becomes counterproductive. Once sleep is lost, it cannot be regained. You can always have a younger brain if you commit to it. Production Location Consultant, STEEL MAGNOLIAS Tommy Whitehead is considered the man responsible for the selection of Natchitoches, LA for the filming of this iconic movie. From the Shreveport Times: "In the summer of 1989 Hollywood came to Natchitoches for the filming of "Steel Magnolias," and introduced the historic, quaint small town to the world. There was Dolly, Julia, Olympia, Sally, Shirley, Daryl — as in Parton, Roberts, Dukakis, Field, Maclaine, Hannah. They were among stars playing the characters in Natchitoches resident Bobby Harling's book about the death of his beloved sister, known as Shelby in the movie, from complications of diabetes in childbirth. And, of her family and the town. "The (stars and staff) fell in love with Natchitoches and blended in beautifully," said Jerry Pierce, the liaison between the Northwestern State University and the movie production folks. They rented houses. Shopped at Brookshire's. Ate at Sibley Lake's lakeside Mariner's restaurant. Skied in Cane River. Climbed Plantation Cherokee's narrow attic stairs to find a ghost. Enjoyed meals in resident Tommy Whitehead's art-filled lake home. Charmed residents. And left memories that linger 30 years later. And today we get to hear some of those terrific memories!

Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, "News Media" with special guest presenter Tiffany Whitehead. November 11, 2017 We are thrilled to welcome Tiffany Whitehead, librarian extraordinaire, as our special guest presenter to share her insights and resources on helping students understand news literacy! Librarians play such an important role as the educational hub in our schools and there is so much we can learn from them. This is perfect timing as we celebrate Media Literacy week, Nov. 6-10, 2017. Media Literacy is the ability to ACCESS, ANALYZE, EVALUATE, COMMUNICATE and CREATE using all forms of communication. The mission of Media Literacy Week is to highlight the power of media literacy education and its essential role in education today. Webinar Description: News Literacy: Teaching students to be discerning in a world of fake news, clickbait, and extreme bias Teaching news literacy is more necessary and challenging than ever in a world where news is delivered at a constant pace from a broad range of sources. Since social media and filter bubbles can make it challenging to access unbiased, factual information, we must equip students to be critical as they access news sources for a variety of purposes. This lecture-style session will give an overview of the phenomenon of fake news going viral and tools educators can use to help students develop news literacy skills. Tiffany Whitehead, aka the Mighty Little Librarian, is an obsessive reader, social media user, and technology geek. She is the Director of Library at Episcopal School of Baton Rouge in Louisiana. Tiff earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and School Library Certification from Southeastern Louisiana University and her graduate degree in Educational Technology Leadership from Northwestern State University.
