S03E11 – the Role of HBCUs in Rural Education, an Interview with President Logan Hampton of Lane College. In this episode of the Rural Voice, we interviewed Dr. Logan Hampton President of Lane College in Jackson Tennessee. We open the discussion discussing the role of Jackson Tennessee as both a small urban and rural location. We discuss how perception of what constitutes rural versus urban can vary depending on students experience and perception. The episode shifts to discussing Lane College which is a traditional black college in Tennessee. Dr Hampton discusses the demographics of the types of students who attend, offering accessibility to students who might not consider higher education. Lane is housed on a former plantation and is now an institution of higher education. This story demonstrates how spaces with a strained history can be repurposed to serve students in need. We discussed how HBCUs serve an important role in rural education. Lane has a religious affiliation, and we discuss how religion can also provide a framework for values and ethics. Dr Hampton discusses why higher education spaces can be capitalized on finding common ground for difficult conversations. He proposes that higher education should be used for hosting and facilitating difficult conversations to find common ground. In other words, let's stop focusing on the differences and find love of our fellow people. We end the episode discussing enrollment numbers nationally and locally at Lane regarding people of color and gender. Bio Logan Hampton was named 10th President of Lane College by the Lane College Board of Trustees on June 12, 2014. Dr. Hampton earned a doctorate in higher education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a master's degree in student personnel services from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., and a bachelor's degree in biology from Arkansas Tech University. Prior to coming to Lane College, Dr. Hampton served in numerous student services capacities at UALR including Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Before UALR, Hampton held positions at Texas A & M University, Texas Christian University, and the University of Central Arkansas. In addition to working as a higher education administrator, Dr. Hampton is an ordained elder in full connection of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME). He served twenty-four years as a pastor in the Arkansas Region of the First Episcopal District of the CME Church. He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three adult children: Elise, Crystal and Logan III.

SWAC media day is upon us and I have some questions like how much offense will Travis Hunter play for Jackson State, and who will be the QB for schools Alabama A&M, Grambling and more. The SIAC coaches project Albany State's Dionte Bonneau and Lane College's Andrew Farmer to be the best offensive and defensive players in the conference, and HBCUnited has made it to the round of 16 in The Basketball Tournament. SWAC media day is upon us and I have some questions like how much offense will Travis Hunter play for Jackson State, and who will be the QB for schools Alabama A&M, Grambling and more. I also want to see how the coaches think the season standings will play out specifically in the west. Also who will be 2nd all SWAC QB behind Shedeur Sanders. The SIAC coaches project Albany State's Dionte Bonneau and Lane College's Andrew Farmer to be the best offensive and defensive players in the conference. Bonneau's ascension would be scary for the conference if it is paired with Albany State's dominant defense of 2021. Meanwhile, Farmer should have a chip on his shoulder from last year's All-SIAC snub. Albany State also leads the conference in All-SIAC players. HBCUnited has made it to the round of 16 in The Basketball Tournament. This is a big improvement over last year's performance, a first round exit. After winning the first game, they knocked off the top seed in the tournament. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Are non conference games important for HBCU's? A version of Jackson State's 2022 schedule leaked, and people were not happy. Lane College is on the schedule, much to the displeasure of Tigers fans. JSU has came out and said the schedule, but the damage was done. That brought me to the question of are non conference games important for HBCUs.  Southern stands alone at the top of SWAC MBB. They have a slight lead on the other top teams, but a lead is a lead. While everyone else is grouped together, they were able to separate themselves with great offense. They are #1 in nearly every offensive statistical category. Norfolk State WBB remains undefeated in MEAC playoffs after a close game vs Maryland Eastern Shore. This was there only close game on the season. They won every other game by double digits. The Lady Spartans achieved this through lockdown defense. All but one team they've faced has had a season low in points is really impressive. Their Crown jewel was holding Delaware State to 36 points the whole game.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! What qualities do you find admirable? Maybe you've met a person that has had difficult life experiences, yet they maintain a positive outlook in life.   For us, our guest Felipe Blue demonstrates the ability to persevere through difficult life experiences with grace and positivity. Those are only two of his many admirable qualities.   Felipe Blue's life is a testimony to those who have felt or feel like the color of your skin sometimes matters more than the character of you as a person. Instead of feeling discouraged by this notion or unfair treatment in the past he takes his experiences as lessons and maintains a loving and positive outlook on not only life but those people who were unfair to him. “There's always many barriers in front of you”- Felipe Blue.   Devin is a proud native of Detroit, Michigan. This is when he learned the importance of getting better, working hard, never quitting and most importantly never stop learning.   Devin is an HBCU graduate of Lane College where you are taught to believe in “The Power of Potential”.   Devin comes from a recruiting background, helping to hire, build and scale tech companies from startups and now FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet's Google) companies. Taking on the philosophy of treating each person like they are the only person he is working with.   Believing there is more to a person than what is on the lines of the resume, he looks for what is in between those lines and that is how you find the gems!   Two phrases to sum up Devin. “Learn from whomever you meet and connect with” and “Get 1% better each day”   Topics we discuss: Eye contact The importance of engaging with the eyes. Best nonverbal cues of man. Cultural differences. How to respect the disrespectful Views everyone as a person. Meeting people where they are. Forgiving the wrong of others. His life and race Friends change when environments change. His life as a clinician. Dual standards and being treated differently. Propaganda surrounding America The difference between loving America and when it becomes toxic. Comparison between other countries. His views on the need to love America.   References: His Website Jim Crow South Sharecropping Rainbow Row Forming of Australia   Credits:   Lead editor + Producer: Ruf Holmes   Music: Main Theme: "Eaze Does It" by Shye Eaze and DJ Rufbeats, a More In Common Podcast Exclusive. On my visit to Lane College, I got to know and speak with an actor from one of America's most iconic TV shows, A Different World; a show, which along with The Cosby Show cemented Thursday night as Must See TV. Darryl M. Bell who played Ron Johnson on the show is also a producer and entrepreneur, and he has a point of view on all things tech, culture and business.  Listen in as Darryl and I get to know one another in less than 48 hours as we both headlined the Inaugural Leadership Conference at the Historically Black College or University, Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee--where we both that the pleasure of presenting keynote addresses. This episode is part 1 of a double header that hits today.  The second episode will drop at noon EST and feature Dr. Logan Hampton, the president of Lane College. This episode also pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who is also and HBCU alum, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha ( the fraternity of Darryl, Dr. Hampton and Chief Joy (mentioned in this episode).  It is the brother organization of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc--my sorority and the sorority of Corretta Scott King) as today marks the anniversary of his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee at the Lorraine Motel--now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum.  Learn more about our visit there the same day as our fireside chat at lmichellesmith.com in the Musings from the Roads section.

According to an U.S. Commission On Civil Rights report, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are credited with creating the American black middle class. The report states that HBCU's have produced 40% of African-American members of Congress, 40% of engineers, 50% professors at PWIs, 50% lawyers, and 80% of judges. However, schools are under-funded (more than half of HBCUs are public institutions) with low endowments and tepid support from private donors, including alumni. Logan Hampton, President of Lane College, a small HBCU in Jackson, TN, visits Funky Politics to discuss the history, power and importance of HBCUs and unapolagetically advocates for our support.
