Jay sits down with comedian Tooky Kavanagh to talk comedy, childhood and butchers her name at least thrice. It's a good listen! Subscribe to our Patreon at: http://www.patreon.com/BigLilKidPod With razor sharp wit and a charm once described as “ineffable,” Tooky (rhymes with cookie) Kavanagh speaks her mind with honesty, charisma, and edge. After just a few years on the scene, Tooky has already performed in New York, Denver, and all over New England. She regularly opens for Myq Kaplan when he visits Boston, performed on a Multiple Sclerosis benefit show with Dr. Jonathan Katz, has opened for Eugene Mirman, and has performed on lineups alongside comedy notables Gary Gulman, Jessica Kirson, and Alingon Mitra, to name a few. In March of 2018 and 2019, she was selected to perform on the Comedy Central UP NEXT audition showcase, and in both April 2018 and February 2019, she was selected to audition for the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs festival. She was selected to be a featured comedian in the 2020 Boston Calling festival… but we'll just see what happens in 2021 instead. Additional standup credits include: The 2020 Rogue Island Comedy Festival; December 2018 Comic-In-Residence at The Comedy Studio; The 2017 Women In Comedy Festival; Thunderfest 2017; The 2017 Boston Comedy Festival; Boston Comedy Chicks; The 2017 Boston Comedy Arts Festival; headlining Laughing Liberally Boston; headlining It Ain't Over ‘Til It's Dover; headlining Stand-Up Thursdays at John Harvard's; co-producing Token: Rethink What Comedy Can Be at ImprovBoston; featuring at The Producer's Club in Manhattan, NY; and Comic Sit-In at The Riot Theater. She cohosts the Loud Women podcast with friend and producer Marissa Emmanuele, hosts The Rehash on 2MBstudios, and cohosts NORM!: The Cheers Podcast on Facebook Live. As an actor, she is a founding cast member of Suzzy, was a regular cast member of the “Redo Crew” for Starstruck: Close Encounters of the Awkward Kind, starred as The Humbled Hobo in a 48 Hour Film Project film, is a featured character in the short film Woman Unknown, and was a recurring character in the web series, Paid For By. She can be seen regularly at Boston-based institutions such as The Comedy Studio, ImprovBoston, and Laugh Boston. Also, she's the one who described her own charm as “ineffable,” but it's still true!
Kendra Dawsey is a stand-up comedian and writer based in Boston. Their razor sharp wit and engaging delivery has earned them spots on comedy festivals, colleges and stages nationwide. They've been featured on both Sirius XM and on Kevin Hart's “Lyft Comics” series on the LOL Network. Kendra's writing and performing has been featured in Revolutionary Spaces' online talk show “Tea Party Tonight!” and on their weekly twitch show, “Left Nite with Kendra Dawsey.” Kendra's comedy combines abrasive criticism with whimsical punch lines for a hysterical time. Whether they're making folks in queer feminist spaces lose their minds or zinging it to drunken New England townies, you're going to want to see their unique style of comedy in person.
For comedian Jay Whittaker, high school didn't suck. Moving from Los Angeles to Orange County could have been disastrous, but a pro move by Jay's dad helped ensure a smooth transition (Moving between school years? Enroll your kids in summer school!) A social butterfly who could hang just as easily with the jocks, band geeks and theater kids, it's no wonder Jay was voted Most Spirited....twice! Although the media has been more prevalent in showing cases of police brutality and systematic racism in recent weeks, these are problems that have plagued our communities for years. And it is becoming increasingly difficult to watch our friends, neighbors, and loved ones suffer repeated injustices based solely on the color of their skin. Unfortunately, the source of this mistreatment isn’t exclusive to government offices or police units… sometimes it’s ordinary citizens perpetuating this appalling behavior. This disrespect, prejudice treatment, and hate speech is also prevalent throughout the geek community. Whether it's due to sexual orientation, gender, or skin color, geeks have become known for their gatekeeping and overall general toxicity. This week we are extremely acknowledged to have three special guests: Malinda Money, Stephan Watson, and Jay Whittaker. Each of them is a person of color who is willing to share their experiences with being black in both the geek community and in modern America. And what's best is that they all bring a unique perspective to things that many of us take for granted. Our first guest is Malinda Money. She is an actor, singer, performer, cosplayer, and self-professed geek. In addition to making some pretty epic cosplays, she has also worked with hundreds of talented artists in both professional film and theatrical productions. You can follow Malinda on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.Next up is Stephan Watson. Stephan is the founder and CEO of Cracked Brain Productions and hosts Cracked Brain Podcast. He also works as a voice actor for games, commercials, audiobooks, short stories, audio dramas, and more! Be sure to follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. And finally, Jay Whittaker is an award-winning stand-up comedian, actor, and podcast producer. He is also one of the co-hosts of Geek Show and an avid birdwatcher who hosts Full Feather Friday where he educates viewers about the amazing world of birds. Check out Jay's website and be sure to follow him on social media at @itsjaywhittaker.Now, if you take anything from this episode, let it be this: please hear our guests. Take their words to heart and strive to be better. Though each of us may look different, come from different places, and have different backgrounds, we are more alike than not. Simply being kind goes a long way. So does listening. Your perspective isn't the only one out there. Your stories aren't the only ones that matter. Take some time to get to know and understand those who are different from you. You'll be glad you did.And one more thing, Jay mentioned a video of Kimberly Jones during the show. Please take a few minutes and check it out here (language warning). See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For part 1, we invite on comedian Jay Whittaker, who tries valiantly to resist our natural negativity. We nominate our biggest disappointments, worst names, most overrated games, and our least favorite characters of 2018.

Halloween is tomorrow! Ladies, is your slutty pirate costume ready? Fellas, is your ebola hazmat suit on lock? What a great time of the year if I say so myself. The World Series, NBA and NHL season starts, NFL is halfway through their season, so is college football, and great weather! I had the pleasure to sit down with fellow AirForce veteran, comedian, hard worker, and self made man Jay Whittaker. We recorded this at Maxwells downtown. Which was a first for me as far as recording with ambiance, I was worried at first about the potential sound quality. I'll admit that. BUT, it turned a lot better then I even anticipated. At SLUG we try not to take things too seriously, so on this episode of Soundwaves we speak with stand up comedians Jay Whittaker and Jonny Brandin about their careers and the comedy scene in SLC. Along the way we hear music from Provo-based hip hop artist, Chance Lewis. - Inspired by the loss of a close friend, Jay Whittaker took up stand up comedy using Salt Lake City as his home base. Our host Dan Nailen chats with Jay about his history with comedy and show business, daily inspirations and the budding comic scene here in Utah. - Uplifting and honest, Chance Lewis challenges the norm with careful use of his words and a firm grip on the craft of sarcasm. His track “Life’s A Joke” reminds us that maybe we shouldn’t take our everyday bullshit so seriously. - Starting his career in Las Vegas as a street performer, Jonny Brandin most recently made Salt Lake City his home. Jonny’s shows are often wild and unpredictable and in his interview with our host, divulges that he would “rather trick people into laughing” than use conventional means. … read more The post Episode #138 – Jay Whittaker, Chance Lewis, Jonny Brandin first appeared on SLUG Magazine.
