We often take our bodies for granted, treating them as vehicles to get us through the day or as objects to manage and control. But author and Jungian Analyst Barbara Holifield's book Being with the Body in Depth Psychology challenges this view, arguing that the body is the foundation of our sense of self and the lens through which we encounter the world. Depth psychology has seldom treated the body as an intrinsic aspect of our psychology, and when it has, it rarely delves into the body as experienced. Through in-depth case studies, Holifield's two important chapters - Chapter 2, Sensing the Self, Sensing the World, and Chapter 4, Attaining Embodiment: A Developmental Perspective - explore how we come to feel at home in our bodies and why this matters for both psychological health and human growth.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Barbara Holifield—a seasoned Jungian analyst, psychotherapist, and somatic psychology expert—on my podcast On the Brink with Andi Simon. Barbara's insights, drawn from decades of experience and personal transformation, left a deep impression on me, and I'm excited to share our conversation with you. In our discussion, Barbara introduced me (and hopefully you) to the powerful idea that our body is not just a collection of parts but a unified whole, and that true transformation begins when we tune into our physical sensations as much as our thoughts. What is a "Whole Body Transformation?" In her new book, Being with the Body in Depth Psychology, Barbara explores the profound importance of accessing the inwardly felt body in depth psychotherapeutic process to enhance the experience of affective life. She draws her insights from philosophical perspectives, neuroscientific and infant research, developmental theory, and trauma studies. What she discovers is a comprehensive overview of embodiment. From her experience, Barbara offers clinical vignettes to demonstrate the critical value of working with bodily felt implicit relational memory. This approach is particularly important with those who have suffered developmental trauma. A Journey of Personal Transformation During our conversation, Barbara shared how her own experiences with trauma and adversity led her to a path of self-discovery and healing. What struck me was her belief that by “dropping the story”—that is, stepping away from the often-limiting narratives we create about our experiences—and instead fully experiencing our bodily sensations, we can connect with a more authentic and grounded version of ourselves. Barbara explained how modern life tends to push us to compartmentalize our experiences, but she reminded me that our mind, heart, and gut are deeply interconnected. Our earliest, instinctual responses, rooted in our sensory and emotional experiences, are just as important as our cognitive interpretations. Key Take-Aways from Our Interview The Body as an Integrated Whole: Barbara challenged the idea that our bodies are just a collection of parts—like a car with separate components. Instead, she stressed that our physical, emotional, and cognitive experiences are all interconnected. This holistic perspective not only helps us understand trauma and adversity but also empowers us to transform those experiences by engaging with our whole selves. Transformation Through Mindful Presence: A central theme of our conversation was the transformative power of mindfulness. Barbara emphasized the importance of pausing to feel and acknowledge our physical sensations, especially during challenging moments. By doing so, we can break free from the limiting stories we tell ourselves and access a more balanced, authentic response to life's ups and downs. Enhanced Communication and Relationship Building: Relationships often falter when we let our personal narratives—filled with assumptions and unspoken grievances—take over. Barbara shared how simply expressing our true feelings; by communicating the physical sensations and emotions we experience in the moment, can lead to deeper empathy and understanding. This approach not only fosters healing in ourselves but also strengthens our bonds with others. You might enjoy this video of our interview on Youtube. Practical Steps I'm Taking to Better Understand My Body and My Mind Inspired by Barbara's wisdom, I've started incorporating a few practices into my daily routine, and I'd love for you to try them as well: Mindful Sensation Check-Ins: I now make it a point to pause throughout the day and check in with my body. I notice my breath, the tension in my shoulders, or the steadiness of my feet. This small act of awareness helps me stay connected to my body, especially during stressful times. Journaling My Sensory Experiences: After particularly emotional moments, I take a few minutes to jot down the physical sensations I felt. This practice has helped me differentiate between the story my mind creates and the raw, embodied experience of my emotions, providing clearer insights into my responses. Engaging in Embodied Movement: Whether it's through yoga, authentic movement, or a mindful walk, I've found that engaging in activities that connect me with my body has been transformative. Appreciating simple moments—like a sunrise or a heartfelt connection with a friend—reminds me to experience life fully and authentically. Listen as intellectual property attorneys Tiffany Gehrke and Kelley Gordon of Marshall Gerstein in Chicago share their insights into three matters relevant anyone watching copyright and trademark law, or anyone fond of branded t-shirts and fancy French beverages. I talk to Tiffany Gehrke about two cases. One is Vidal v. Elster, better known as the “TRUMP TOO SMALL” case. Just decided by the Supreme Court, this deals with whether a mark containing criticism of a government official or public figure – which is barred by the “names clause” of the Lanham Act – violates free speech. Justice Thomas wrote the majority opinion, which Tiffany outlines. The other case is Penn State v. Vintage Brands, which is pending in Pennsylvania federal court and is expected to have wide-reaching implications for retailers and brand owners alike. Vintage Brand uses Penn State's registered Nittany Lions trademarks on t-shirts, hats, and other goods, and argues that use of the trademarks constitute a defensible “ornamental use.” We shall see! Finally, I ask Kelley Gordon for her take on a dispute between a popular Instagram influencer, Lauren Holifield, and champagne brand Veuve Clicquot. Holifield temporarily and surprisingly lost her IG account after Veuve Clicquot raised trademark infringement concerns on three of Holifield's videos. This was a big deal for her. She was earning six figures. OMG. Hear what Kelley has to say. *******This podcast is the audio companion to the Journal of Emerging Issues in Litigation. In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I sit down and talk with Brittany and Cody Holifield. I had Cody and Brittany on the show after we first met at A Year to Volunteer project at Sam Houston Jones State Park back in March of 2022. At that time, they were a full-time RV family of four traveling throughout the United States under the name Hitch to Hitch. A lot has changed for them over the past couple of years, and they are about to start a new chapter. Hitch to Hitch is changing to Halls Top Hangout. What is Halls Top Hangout, you ask? It's a brand new off-grid adventure camp in the beautiful East Tennessee Mountain town of Hartford. Hartford, Tennessee is located about an hour from Knoxville, Ashville, and Gatlinburg, on the edge of the Cherokee National Forest. Cody and Brittany want to create a space where people can come to, unplug, and reconnect with nature. To find out more about what's going on at the new Halls Top Hangout Adventure Camp, check out their website at https://www.hallstophangout.com/.
In this episode, host David Ponraj speaks with Johnathan Holifield, published author and highly practiced economic development authority, about his book: The Future Economy and Inclusive Competitiveness. Johnathan, the Architect of Inclusive Competitiveness (™) is the former executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCU and senior vice president of Bitwise Industries, and who's now looking for his next big challenge where he can contribute to meaningful change. The two share an animated and deeply philosophical discussion about what defines and impedes economic equity and economic mobility in America. Economic mobility hinges on ownership – ownership of assets and ownership of skills. A combination of the two is the key for individuals to achieve economic equity.Johnathan shares that “the constitution protects us against racial discrimination, but doesn't protect us with economic rights.” They discuss how the “race factor” has been a crutch when attempting to understand economic inequities, and that we haven't been creative in addressing true solutions. Economic equity is hard to measure and is a difficult concept. That does not mean that it is not a critical concept worth measuring. A fascinating, deep dive conversation that chips away at the underpinnings of the wealth gap; and the previous and current superficial solutions that aren't working and may, in fact, be widening that gap. Listen in to hear their in-depth insights, challenging questions and revolutionary solutions toward achieving real, measurable economic equity and inclusive competitiveness for all.About Johnathan Holifield: Johnathan is an Innovation Economy leader, civil rights advocate and former NFL athlete. His community roles, which evolved into economic development–especially with regard to tech / innovation–are of special note, including NAACP and other civic entrepreneurial roles, which opened the door to the VP, New Economy Enterprise, Cincinnati USA Chamber of Commerce and Founding Executive. Director, CincyTech. This began his career in economic development. What makes his career unique is the hard-to-match background in traditional community development and groundbreaking leadership in tech / innovation-based economic development. It is the blending of his multidisciplinary background into an interdisciplinary career in tech / innovation economic development that is unparalleled. His interdisciplinary career fueled creation of the Inclusive Competitiveness Framework. Connect with Johnathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thetrimtabber/

This week, Elisabeth spoke with Jazmine Holifield, a multi-hypenate Milwaukee creative who is a creative director within her own company, and also works at the Operations Coordinator at Imagine MKE. Holifield is one-half of C&B Creative, a local creative consulting company, which she founded in 2012 with longtime friend and business partner, Kayla Green. Together, they produce creative arts events, support dozens of artists and creatives (local and across the country) and provide several services such as creative brand consulting, set design and staging, event planning, project management, and more. As Operations Coordinator for Imagine MKE, she's been leading on Imagine's Arts and Economic Prosperity Study from Americans for the Arts, and also spearheads programs and events for IMKE. Jazmine Holifield was born and raised in Milwaukee. After a few years living in Dallas and Los Angeles, she returned home to Milwaukee three years ago during the pandemic, and was pleasantly surprised the find herself back in the midst of a creative community that had been building momentum since she left six year prior— stumbling into what she calls “Milwaukee's creative renaissance.” Holifield is motivated by bringing a sense of purpose to her role inside and outside of Imagine MKE, with the hopes of encouraging and supporting other creatives on their journeys. She also values the reflections from the Milwaukee creatives she works alongside, who have been building since she started her C&B Creative Brand. Finding herself today in more of a mentorship role, Holifield is encouraged by seeing the growth she's seen in her fellow creatives, and is also motivated to keep going on her own journey by seeing the impact she's had within the ecosystem in Milwaukee's creative sector. She shares words of wisdom for Milwaukee creatives who are just getting started-- urging them to "start where they are."“There's so many different shades of greatness, here.” says Holifield. In the future, she wishes to see Milwaukee's diverse creative scene flourish. If that were to happen, to her it would mean more color, more public art, more collaboration. A place that is more outwardly artistic, with a central arts district, where laughter is abundant and the culture can be a refuge from challenges and "the news". A place where artists and art are valued and respected at all levels. Holifield also hopes that when this new creative day dawns, that the professional creative opportunities that arise here will first and foremost be abundant for the native Milwaukeeans who created the conditions for flourishing with their talenta and persistance.C&B Creative High Rollers Club Jade Charon's “Gold” Liv DJ Gemini Gilly TRP (The Roses Prevail)The Brick Layers Club Jungle Gems Transitional song is an excerpt from

Johnathan Holifield spent many years deeply involved in neighborhood and community development work without really moving the needle until he discovered the game-changing nature of the innovation economy. “The stuff we were doing was good work, but we were focused on largely inelastic career opportunities versus what you find in the tech sector and innovation economy, which are elastic opportunities that really give you social and economic mobility.” As senior vice president of New Economies at Bitwise Industries, he's now in a position to help what he calls disconnected populations gain access to the best options for economic advancement, and do so on an increasingly national scale. Bitwise, which started in Fresno, California in 2013, helps marginalized communities obtain the skills and resources necessary to access opportunities in the tech industry. Apprenticeships are key to its model and Bitwise is now the largest tech apprenticeship provider in the United States. In today's episode of the podcast, VP/Head of Digital (& Social Media) Strategy at Pacers Sports & Entertainment Tatiana Holifield speaks on the importance of building a solid personal brand and how to achieve it. Growing up as a military kid raised by a single mother, Tatiana Holifield has built her brand around passion, hard work, and grit. I'm going on my second year teaching English as a foreign language and it's the best decision I've ever made. I would say that my expertise lies in teaching people with an intermediate level. I enjoy teaching about grammar, phrasal verbs and pronunciation. I do my best to make sure that my students are having a good time while still receiving the information they need in order to improve. I'm here to help you. Let's start learning!
