About Today's GuestMelissa Washington, Navy Veteran, Founder & CEO: Award-winning advocate, speaker, author, entrepreneur, CEO, publisher, Radio Show Host, and proud Navy veteran Melissa A. Washington wears many hats. Yet woven throughout her diverse pursuits is a mission of service—and a passion to empower her fellow women veterans. The daughter of a Bronze Star Army Vietnam War veteran, Melissa grew up in San Francisco's East Bay. Fiercely independent as a child, she spent many afternoons in her family's video store, developing an early sense of business acumen. That enterprising spirit continued into her teenage years when Melissa began training for a career in early childhood education while still in high school. But something else sparked in Melissa just as she was finishing her certification. Seeking to expand her world and serve her country, the 18-year-old enlisted in the Navy, spending three years on active duty and five years in the reserve. She did a 6-month "Med Cruise" and a 6-month "West Pac" deployment during her active duty. That formative experience set her life on a completely new trajectory—not only taking her across the globe and teaching her vital lessons but also introducing Melissa to her husband and, ultimately, inspiring her to transform thousands of lives. In the mid-nineties, she chose to leave the Navy early, having witnessed the burdens that come with a dual-service family. While her husband would remain in the Marine Corps for 21 years, Melissa embarked on a new path, earning her bachelor's degree in business management. She followed with a decade-long career in corporate recruiting and human resources, working with such entities as Nissan, Oracle, Tickets.com, Randstad, and the 2002 Winter Olympics. But in 2009, amid The Great Recession, Melissa was laid off. Despite the setback, she relied on her military training—which taught her to be adaptable and resourceful—and her innate sense of resilience. Above all, Melissa saw an opportunity to reinvent herself once again.Initially, she held LinkedIn workshops from her dining room table, imparting her vital knowledge to others. Soon, she was hosting larger workshops, which eventually grew into speaking engagements with hundreds of attendees. In 2011, she established Melissa Washington, Inc., a consulting service catering to businesses and individuals that incorporates LinkedIn for research, recruiting, job seeking, and collaboration. After four years at LinkedIn, where Melissa managed global meetings, she returned to her entrepreneurial roots. But this time, she focused on her fellow women veterans. A natural networker, Melissa initially sought to connect with her peers outside of traditional veterans' organizations. Yet, the more meetups she planned, the more she realized the need for a dedicated support system for women veterans. In 2015, what started as a local meetup turned into Women Veterans Alliance—a global organization that seeks to empower and positively impact the lives of women veterans. Three years later, she established the nonprofit wing of WVA, Women Veterans Giving. Both entities offer women veterans opportunities to gain valuable career experience and successfully integrate back into civilian life. WVG also helps fund women veteran-owned businesses, which other organizations often overlook. To date, they have awarded over $20k to women in veteran-owned businesses. In 2016, created and produced the first "Women Veterans Unconference." Developed The Beyond Call of Duty Award Honoring Sgt Nicole Gee to honor and recognize the women in our communities. In 2021, Melissa expanded her role in the community by co-founding Women Veterans Magazine—the first publication of its kind to address the issues affecting women veterans and provide them with local and national resources. Aside from serving as CEO of WVA and WVG and publisher of Women Veterans Magazine, Melissa stays busy as an in-demand public speaker whose topics range from Maximizing Impact to Unlocking the Power of Purpose. She speaks regularly at conferences and events around the country and has spoken at over 100 events—presenting for the likes of Marriott, the Urban League, Blue Diamond, and IMEX America. Melissa has also appeared on the Dr. Phil Show and the Lifetime Channel's The Balancing Act, as well as on SiriusXM, iHeartRadio, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, among others.Additionally, Melissa is the author of Get Back to Work: Smart & Savvy Real-World Strategies to Make Your Next Career Move (FriesenPress, 2014). And Unstoppable: Being Fierce, Fearless & Unf*ckwithable in Life and Business, based on her experiences with WVA, which offers practical advice on creating a meet-up group and becoming an influencer within one's community (Brave Healer Productions, 2022).A longtime resident of Northern California, Melissa was a 2011 recipient of the Sacramento Business Journal's prestigious 40 Under 40 award and was among the Journal's Women Who Mean Business honorees in 2017. She has also been recognized by the National Association of Women Business Owners with an Outstanding Women Leader Visionary Award and received the 2016 Soroptimist Ruby Award, which recognizes women helping women. In 2019, she received the Center for Women Veterans' Trailblazer Award. In 2022, she received her first Federal Appointment to the Small Business Administration Advisory Committee on Veteran Business Affairs (ACVBA). In 2022, Thrive Causemetics Inc. featured a "Melissa" Warm Sienna Sheer Strength Hydrating Lip Tint to honor her infinite impact on the community. In 2023, she started Veteran.Events to provide event services to the veteran and military community. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Jarrod, and daughter, Maya. In addition to being an avid genealogist, Melissa loves vacationing with her family—particularly trips that involve a beach. Her grandfather, a WWII Army Air Corps/Air Force Veteran who received the Bronze Star and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, served in the 509th Bomb Squad AC in the Eastern European Theater with 37 missions over Germany. Her husband is a retired Marine who served in combat in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).Links Mentioned in this Episode Women Veterans Alliance Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekFor this week's PsychArmor resource of the week is the PsychArmor course, Women Veterans Series. Acomi and Turk182 decide to visually flog themselves to cleanse the horrible movies they've watched from their heads. After reading Dave Holmes' negatively glowing review in Esquire magazine, the two decided that that The Book of Henry (2017) couldn't possibly do what Legend of the Rollerblade Seven, Things 5, or City of the Living Dead failed to accomplish. They were wrong. So very, very wrong. Sorry, we doubted you, Dave. With a plot that is too quirky and heartfelt for The Lifetime Channel, and too intellectual for The Hallmark Channel, The Book of Henry finds its niche like a texture glitch in a video game. Waiting for some player to get too close, and get trapped in a small crevice between graphic layers. Seeing every level of the game at once, but unable to free yourself from the madness. When the smartest boy in the world (the world consisting of one small town trapped under a dome on an asteroid spinning wildly into the vast reaches of space) learns that his female classmate and neighbor are being abused by their stepfather, he tries to help. But, when he is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor (that he knew he had - he's the smartest kid, duh!), that he didn't know he had until the doctor told him he had it. Blinding headaches that induce seizures, must be allergy season. He concocts a brilliant plan, to be carried out after his death, that is so convoluted it makes Ocean's 11 look like 2 Fast 2 Furious. Join Acomi and Turk as they try to unravel the mystery of how this movie got made, and marvel at how a movie so bad didn't get a sequel. The Book of Henry II - The Next Chapter. "Henry's got a list. Pray you aren't on it." Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. All jokes and comments are improvised. NO PREPARED JOKES OR COMMENTS! During recording, the movies are watched at a low volume and with the subtitles on. Viewers may want to turn subtitles on as well to enhance the viewing experience. So, cue up the audio, ready the movie, and hit play when we say so. Note: This is commentary recorded by Acomi and Turk182. The commentary can be enjoyed on its own, but if you want to experience the Let's Watch! in all its glory, you'll need your own copy of the movie. Most of the movies viewed can be streamed online for free. #OMTWF #KorovaEntertainment #LetsWatch #LW #Acomi #Turk182 #awfulsome #TheBookofHenry #Esquire #Esquiremagazine Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. They briefly talk about a B-movie called Ghoulies and mention upcoming horror movie adaptations of fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. They also mention Mandy Moore's role in an Insidious spinoff and discuss the concept of time travel in horror movies. The conversation then shifts to a movie called Bloody Moon, an '80s horror flick set in a Spanish language school, and Johnny Spoiler and Jordan Savage express their thoughts on the film. Finally, they discuss the characteristics of a Lifetime movie, which Johnny Spoiler and Jordan Savage describe as an exaggerated psychological thriller with a predictable pattern. Johnny Spoiler and Jordan Savage are discussing a movie called "Bloody Moon" and sharing their thoughts on various aspects of the film. Johnny Spoiler mentions that the movie transitions from being a slasher film to resembling a Lifetime Channel movie. They jokingly suggest that Lifetime should adapt the entire series and discuss how the plot elements, such as a Spanish vacation, learning a new language, a boyfriend who is a suspect, and conflicts over money, align with typical Lifetime movie themes. Jordan Savage adds that the movie has all the elements necessary for a Lifetime movie, including a sex symbol character and multiple layers of storytelling. They then move on to discuss the favorite bits including a character's misdirection and the use of wax figures for gore effects. They also mention the disappointment with a specific scene and share their thoughts on the movie's overall style and its resemblance to Italian horror films. The speakers touch on a scene that goes against their personal preferences, and highlight a scene involving a character faking a special encounter. Jordan mentions risque favorite moments in the movie. Johnny Spoiler and Jordan Savage comment on the creepy tone set in the beginning of the film and make a reference to the twisted sibling dynamic portrayed. Johnny Spoiler and Jordan Savage mention a camera mistake in the beginning, comparing it to the movie "Halloween." They discuss the antagonist wearing a mask, and there is a silhouette on the camera that takes them out of the movie momentarily. They also talk about the characters and plot twists, mentioning a mute landscaper who is connected to the plot, the protagonist's brother, and the sister's manipulation. They comment on the twists and turns in the story and express their confusion about who the antagonist is throughout the film. They mention the manager of the school hooking up with the sister and the aunt's inheritance plans. Johnny Spoiler and Jordan Savage share their negative opinions about the movie, with one of them expressing disappointment and saying they would have given it a negative rating. They mention the director's reputation and the volume of films he made. They discuss the dislike the director has for the movie and suggest not watching it. The speakers also mention feedback from viewers and encourage more reviews and comments. They briefly discuss upcoming movies and a documentary about Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy Krueger in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series. They mention the documentary's interviews with various horror actors and their friendships with Robert Englund. They highlight the interesting storytelling about the creation of the Freddy Krueger character.

With the extra time afforded by recording last week's show a few days early, I've been binge-watching "Hunter" (former LA Rams standout Fred Dryer as a (very) poor man's Dirty Harry), the Lifetime Channel's NXIVM saga, ": A Mother's Fight to Save Her Daughter" (I suspect they've used that title before) and re-familiarizing myself with the proper methods and protocols for siphoning gasoline from a neighbor's vehicle. And somehow, I still managed to program 2 + hours of world-class selections, interspersed with effervescent commentary on the events of the day (ie. my neighbor's reaction to seeing me siphon gasoline from their car).
Food a la Floyd was a series that ran on the Lifetime Channel from May to October 1989. It starred Keith Floyd, who made his first cooking series for the BBC in 1984 and continued to make new shows until his death in 2009.

The events industry is all about creating the pretty. But let's be honest... things aren't so pretty right now. With events postponing and canceling and most vendors seeing fewer inquiries coming in than in years past, being in the wedding industry right now is no joke. In this week's episode of the This Week In Weddings podcast, we're chatting with floral designer and event production guru Jes Gordon about the changes to her business in light of Covid. She's sharing her open and honest opinions and best advice for the event industry to move forward. About our guest: Jes Gordon’s namesake company jesGORDON/properFUN, provides high end, personal event design and management with loads of signature style. Her first book, Party Like A Rock Star (Globe Pequot Press), provides everyone with the tools they need to throw the party of their dreams, regardless of their budget. Gordon was the Design Mentor on Bravo’s “Rocco’s Dinner Party.” Each week, Gordon aided the competing chefs in creating a memorable dinner party experience that went well beyond the cuisine. Gordon’s innate eye for color was first noticed at thirteen when she stumbled into the industry as an assistant to a floral designer. By the time she reached her junior year at Bard College, she had a blooming floral business. Gordon went on to open a contemporary art gallery and flower shop in Taos, New Mexico, and later moved to New Orleans to work on set designs for films, including “Interview with a Vampire” and “Dead Man Walking.” In 1992, Gordon became the Events and Decor Director for the infamous Tavern on the Green restaurant in New York. Her work at Tavern on the Green led to private commissions for celebrities including Madonna, Barbara Streisand, Harrison Ford, Vanessa Williams, Sting, and Elton John, among others. Gordon now applies her eye for design and passion for the unexpected to her event design and production firm. Gordon has created captivating corporate events for Bank of Hapoalim, CNN, L’oreal Paris, Hostess, M&M’s, Comcast, West Point, The Lifetime Channel and many others. She also continues to dazzle brides and socialites alike with dream weddings and private affairs. With a strong base in New York, she continues to work all over the world. Gordon continues to involve herself with philanthropic projects such as; DIFFA, ASPCA, The Orchestra of St. Lukes and the Women of Worth Gala for L’oreal Paris. Gordon recently completed her first novel Party on the Moon which will be available to readers all over the world as well seen as a scripted series on a major network. In this episode, listeners will hear about: Jes' background and how she got started in the floral and event design industry The Wall Street Journal article that featured Jes Gordon and the event industry in light of Covid What Jes did to quickly reduce her expenses and get out of the high costs of living in New York City The issues and aftermath that Jes may have to deal with as a result of her departure The mindset Jes is taking about the present and the future Jes' thought about keeping employees on payroll when you're not bringing in revenue Using your skills in events in other industries The importance of cutting unnecessary expenses and downsizing during this time Reassessing your business, expenses, and employees to decide what you're going to purge and what you're going to keep Jes' book: Party Like a Rock Star: A Celebrity Party Planner's Tips And Tricks For Throwing An Unforgettable Bash Jes' novel: Party on the Moon Want to connect with Jes? This is a story of one of the first documented stories of possession. Mary Roff, dead for twelve years comes back to occupy the body of Lurancy "Rancy" Vennem. Mary and Rancy are caught in a whirlwind of the Spirtualist movement of the late 1800's. Its a odd blend of spirits and scientific people attempting to make sense of at all. Did Mary return to her earthly existence in Watseka, IL for a few months? You be the judge. We recorded this in several segments due to finding time and getting out in the weather so thanks for your patience. We also have a debate on the value of the Lifetime Channel.
Today is Thursday, December 5 and we’re looking at Hallmark Channel vs. Lifetime Channel.
The Last House on the Left (1972) 1972 exploitation film written, edited and directed by Wes Craven and produced by Sean Cunningham, which is based on the Swedish film by Ingmar Bergman ‘The Virgin Spring’. It was filmed on a modest budget of $87,000 but would gross over $3million. Originally to be filmed as a hardcore film with all actors and crew being totally committed, was changed after shooting began to make a softer film. Craven idea of the film was to not glamourise violence. The film would star David A Hess, Sandra Peabody and Steve Miner as a hippie taunting Deputy. The film would be remade in 2006 by Rogue Pictures Big Driver (2014) Based on a short story found in Stephen King’s Full Dark, No Stars (2010), Lifetime Channel would film with a screenplay by Richard Christen Matheson (son of Richard Matheson). Considered to be a television exploitation film, some critics were unimpressed while other critics praised this to the hilt. The story deals with a crime mystery writer driving cross country for a meet and greet where she ends up on the side of the road in a rural area. It is a revenge tale that after a beating and raping, Tess takes matters into her own hands. It is often compared to King’s version of the classic exploitation film, I Spit On your Grave. Starring Maria Bello, Joan Jett and Olympia Dukakis and directed by Mikael Salomon. Help save the fin trad by signing the petition. It only takes a minute of your time and you too can help these creatures back from the brink of mass extinction. https://www.sharkallies.com/nofinfl-support-sign-on Opening Credits (.20); Introduction (1.52); Forming the Plot (24.40); Film Trailer (30.46); Page to Page (32.37); Outlining the Script (1:05.37); Film Trailer (1:09.09); Lights, Camera, Action (1:11.16); Epilogue (1:44.34); End Credits (1:58.57); Closing Theme (1:59.46) Opening Credits – Introduction and Opening Credits – by David A Hess from the album Original Soundtrack Recording Last House on the Left Closing Credits – Revenge – by P!nk and Eminem from the album A Beautiful Trauma All songs rights reserved All music available through Amazon.
Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast. Today for a bonus episode I decided to cover the 1996 TV Movie For My Daughter's Honor or the alternate title Indecent Seduction. This movie starred Nicholle Tom of the first two Beethoven movies and the hit tv show The Nanny, and Gary Cole of Office Space and The Brady Bunch Movie as well as A Very Brady Sequel. In this movie In Tate, Oklahoma a popular coach, Pete Nash, is accused of having a sexual relation with 14 years old Amy, one of his school's pupils. I was the character Amy's (Nicholle Tom)age when this movie came out in 1996, so I could relate to her on an age level, also I loved the country group The Mavericks and had the CD that heavily features the song "O' What A Thrill". This movie also lightly showcases the early talents of Alyson Hannigan of Buffy and How I Met Your Mother fame as well as the first four theatrical American Pie movies. Plus Sara Rue who went on to star in the show Popular and guested on The Big Bang Theory. The movie is based on the Texas Monthly Article The Seduction Of Jane Doe by Skip Hollingsworth. Here's The Link To That Article: https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/the-seduction-of-jane-doe/ Sadly, when this originally aired in 1996 I had to go to bed before I could finish the movie, so I didn't see the ending, even though the following week in school a teacher who also caught the movie on tv happened to fill me in. I didn't see the movie in full until I was in my 20's when I caught it on the Lifetime Channel. Rewatching the movie as an adult I really felt for Amy's character and also cheered on her mother as she begin digging deeper into this teacher's illicit history with previous female students over the years. This whole town turned on Amy and her family, protecting their beloved coach and turning a blind eye to his wrong doings of teacher student affairs. Lisa Mills spent years of working in social service programs and nonprofit organizations. By honing her skills talking to those groups she also found her sense of humor. Using that humor she discovered she could connect and break the ice with the families she was helping. Her comedy shined bright at a conference she had helped plan. As the conference neared, Lisa and the event planners realized that some of the subject matter was going to be pretty heavy. They decided someone should lighten up the group between messages. That someone was Lisa Mills. She wrote ten minutes of material the night before and she instantly caught the comedy bug. LISA MILLS SHOW NOTES We cover a lot of ground in this episode, Specifically we talk about: Searching out comedy mentors on Youtube Hiring Kerri Pomarollii (past guest) to help her with her material How she works out new material onstage How (and why) she skipped open mics The unlikely benefit of having no local comedy community Meeting up with Chonda Pierce and Kelly Swanson Putting on the SHECON conference with Kay Dodd How she preps for events with clients The number one thing she tells new speakers and a whole lot more! Since Selena's first induction into the Diva Hall of Fame, she has had multiple massive collaborations (notably Kygo, Marshmello, and Charlie Puth) but has not released any new material. At the time, she was wrapping up a worldwide tour and had several production deals with the Lifetime Channel and Netflix. Ya'll may have heard of something called "13," which was a huge hit for the streaming service, even if it wasn't my cup of tea and frankly gave an appearance of glorifying suicide — but hey, that's just me. Because Selena has kept her name shining bright and accumulated multiple hits during this period, Party Favorz thought it was only appropriate to update the original induction with alternate versions and their material. Frankly, I like the overall feel of this set compared to the first. My guess (though I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time) is that she honors us with a new album in 2019 — at which point, I'll go back and update this set again once it has its full run. On this episode we discuss Robert Kelly, aka R.Kelly (pronounced R-ra-Kelly) and The Lifetime Channel's journalistic integrity. We also discuss Trump's government shut down. For Republicans, it's a slight inconvenience, for everyone else, it's a b***h. By the way, have you seen Lil' Mama's glow up--from Lil' Mama to Baby Mama! Then we (gingerly) step into the world of religion to discuss the most basic, universal principle: do unto others as you would unto yourself. Finally, we discuss the, um, man hug?
The Lifetime Channel documentary "Surviving R Kelly" once again brought the scars of sexual exploitation to the front of Black American culture. The problem of sexual exploitation of children, women, and even some men has yet to be fully addressed by black churches. How can the black church be proactive in preventing sexual predators from joining it's ranks of leadership? Join Dr. Lorenzo Neal for a live broadcast of the show as he discucsses the latest topics of the day
PSA-- I'M NOT DEFENDING R KELLY, I'm just wondering how the Lifetime Channel has all you people so deep in your feelings over things you already know. We have bigger things to worry about, and shouldn't lose Friends over a Lifetime Special. Will Lifetime change or effect the Sex Trafficking that goes on, on a Worldwide scale? I think not, especially while the Government is shut down. I can't stand you people. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pcpodcast-vogpodcast/support

Sometimes it's just nice to chat with someone who has a rich history in the event industry, has grown a successful business, and just tells it like it is. This week on the This Week In Weddings podcast, we're doing just that with New York City-based event designer Jes Gordon. In this week's episode, we're chatting with Jes about her experience the industry and what she's learned along the way. Gordon has created captivating corporate events for Bank of Hapoalim, CNN, Ann Taylor, M&M’s, Comcast, AOL, Yahoo, Rowenta, A&E Networks, West Point, Lifetime Channel, and many others. She also continues to dazzle brides and socialites alike with dream weddings and private affairs. With a strong base in New York, she continues to work all over the world. In this episode, listeners will hear about: How Jes Gordon got started in the event industry at the age of 13 How Jes uses an initial meeting to learn about her clients through observation Jes's take on competition in the industry and staying in your own lane Looking outside the industry to gain knowledge How having her name on the door has shaped her business Want to connect with Jes? I met Nancy over 11 years ago when we were both members of a unique group at the Family Place in Dallas, TX. What made us different is that we didn't fit the societal stereotype of abused women. We were white with prominent and financially successful spouses. We were thought to be privileged, and no one entertained the possibility that abuse was the defining word for our marriages. Our group was even in a documentary that aired on the Lifetime Channel. Although we no longer see each other weekly, Nancy is one of those people who seem to be in my energy field. Every few years we wind up in the same place at the same time from restaurants to clothing stores to the Dallas Yoga Center. We even have carved out careers helping others to improve their lives as best-selling authors, radio show hosts and counseling with myself as a life coach and Nancy as a health counselor. None of this was predictable given the trauma we experienced. Join us Thursday to hear how Nancy left abuse and healed!
This week, it's Christmas, and we're celebrating the holidays by talking about our favorite Christmas movies, and adding a lot of silly economic and political wonkery. What do our Christmas entertainments teach us about our life and times? Let's find out. Meanwhile, in America, you can't have Christmas without also having a war on Christmas. So how did this year's war go? Here to discuss everything from blood red Starbucks cups to the Lifetime Channel's quick shots of false Yuletide hope is comedy writer and reporter Katla McGlynn. Finally, you know what the best gift we received all year was? A government agency not shot through with grotesque regulatory capture. Our pal Alexis Goldstein joins us to discuss what a mitzvah the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Bruce Hart was born in Michigan and relocated to Los Angeles where he began his career on television. Bruce is best known for his roles in feature films such as "Saltwater" also starring Ian Roberts and "Homewrecker" also starring Dylan Vox and Rebekah Kochan which spoofs the genre of melodramatic Lifetime Channel movies but with a gay twist. The latter film was also co-written and executive produced by Hart. In 2007 Bruce appeared the award winning film on gay bashing "The Reckoning" in and was cited by the Life Affirmation Association for his strong portrayal as the abducted and victimized leader of a fictional Gay & Lesbian Center. The tale coincidentally paralleled his own experience with violence when he was assaulted on the streets of Los Angeles and suffered severe head injuries and paralysis of his right arm. Both injuries he overcame after surgery and intense physical therapy. Hart is also known for his roles in two series. In "Boystown" a Canadian TV series he plays the villain Stuart who stirs up heaps of trouble. In "Old Dogs and New Tricks" a web series he plays the bitchy "frenemy" Nelson Van Eddy. Hart will also be seen in two features slated for release in 2013 "Dracula" and "The Trouble with Barry".
