In this episode, Jonathan and Devon chat with composer Robin Hiley & writer Becky Hope-Palmer about their musical "LIFELINE" currently running off-Broadway. LIFELINE tells the story of Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming's world-changing discovery of penicillin in 1928, charting the rise and fall of antibiotics. Fleming's historic story is interwoven with Jess', a present day doctor whose childhood sweetheart, Aaron, is recovering from cancer treatment, almost 100 years after antibiotics were discovered. But just as Aaron is desperate to resume normality and rekindle the romance, his life hangs in the balance, as he waits to see if Fleming's miracle cure will still work well enough to save him. The musical is a two-time Edinburgh Festival Fringe sell-out (2018 and 2022). It has toured to London, Glasgow and the east coast of the USA (2022). It has also been showcased at the UK Houses of Parliament and in Barbados for Prime Minister Mia Mottley. The show is devised in collaboration with five women and non-binary performers who identify as D/deaf and disabled, led by director Rachel Drazek (Movement Director - My Left Right Foot) and poet/playwright and performer Ellen Renton (Within Sight). Disciples is a joyful, dynamic performance that comes to life through a blend of music, movement, text and image - led by poetry. Themes in the piece include finding joy, finding faith, finding power and what happens to the parts of ourselves that we are asked to hide. Questioning who gets to be the storytellers of our experiences, Disciples joins the voices of those working to break down these barriers, in the arts and beyond. Ellen said: “It's a rare and beautiful thing to be able to build a creative space with so many D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people across the cast and team. This is not a show about disability, but it will challenge preconceptions.” OUR WEBSITE - www.persistentandnasty.co.uk Persistent Pal & Nasty Hero - Pals and Hero Membership Support In The Room - https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/in-the-room Email – persistentandnasty@gmail.com Instagram - @persistentandnasty Twitter - @PersistentNasty Coffee Morning Eventbrite - Coffee Morning Tickets LINKTREE - LINKTR.EE Resources Samaritans - Rape Crisis Scotland - Rape Crisis UK ArtsMinds - BAPAM Freelancers Make Theatre Work Stonewall UK - Trevor Project - Mermaids UK Switchboard LGBT+ - GATE PLANNED PARENTHOOD DONATE - DONATE ABORTION SUPPORT NETWORK UK - ASN.COM- DONATE WeAudition offer: For 25% off your monthly subscription quote: NASTY25 Backstage Offers: Get a free 12 months Actor Subscription: https://join.backstage.com/persistentnasty-uk-12m-free/

It's time to unearth a classic board game, roll some dice and pray for a 5 or an 8 as we discuss 1995 Jumanji. Gary and Rebecca are joined by Actor and fellow Podcaster Craig Andrew Mooney to discuss this Robin Williams, comedy adventure. SynopsisA magical board game unleashes a world of adventure on siblings Peter (Bradley Pierce) and Judy Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst). While exploring an old mansion, the youngsters find a curious, jungle-themed game called Jumanji in the attic. When they start playing, they free Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), who's been stuck in the game's inner world for decades. If they win Jumanji, the kids can free Alan for good -- but that means braving giant bugs, ill-mannered monkeys and even stampeding rhinos!Links In Conversation. Who knows how long more the arse will be dragged out of this? It’s 2048 and the end of the world is nigh. Actually, it’s not that nigh – it’s been going on for flipping ages and everyone’s a bit over it, to be honest. Liam and his long-suffering wife Edel have been up all night trying to get their chaotic affairs into some kind of order, surrounded by dozens of empties from last night’s raging party. They feel rough, they’re on edge, and they’re blasting music to drown out the cataclysmic noise outside as cities start to disappear and the world’s animals go haywire. Liam is hammering furiously at his typewriter, finishing the memoirs that no-one will ever read. Edel is wrangling with her laptop, desperately trying to say a final goodbye to their beloved kids. And they’re both reflecting on past regrets - and trying to put them right in sometimes bloody, messy, outrageous ways. As tempers fray, family secrets are outed and their behaviour becomes ever more questionable, Liam and Edel try to work out what really matters as they career towards a bickering end - while the world literally falls apart around them. John Morton’s brutally comic Denouement - presented as an audio recorded reading - has been nominated for the inaugural Popcorn Award for playwriting. A co-production between the Traverse Theatre and Lyric Theatre Belfast stars real-life couple Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones, Derry Girls) as Liam and Marie Jones (In the Name of the Father) as Edel, is directed by the Traverse’s award-winning Co-Artistic Director Gareth Nicholls (Crocodile Fever, Ulster American) and features sound design and composition by Michael John McCarthy.

Strap in, lads. This one is truly a cracker. Team Nasty sit down for an utterly class chat with playwright, actress and bringer of all round good craic, Meghan Tyler. We discuss her insanely brilliant new play Crocodile Fever, witchcraft, finding your coven, and the strength of female friendship. ABOUT THE SHOW Northern Ireland, 1989. Rebellious Fianna Devlin crashes back into the life of her pious sister Alannah. Together for the first time in years, they are back at each other's throats in seconds. And when they are forced to confront their tyrannical father's hideous legacy, all hell breaks loose. Fuelled by Taytos, gin, 80s tunes and a chainsaw, it's the Devlin sisters versus the world. Like Thelma and Louise's punk daughter, Meghan Tyler's surreal new play is a grotesque, black comedy celebrating sisterhood whilst reminding us that the pressure cooker of The Troubles is closer than we imagine. www.madeinscotlandshowcase.com The show is smashing the reviews and is starting to sell out so book your tickets quick. It's here folks, the city is awash with lanyards, Spiegeltents (yes, plural) have been erected, the purple cow is upside down and the circus has most definitely come to town, literally and figuratively. For episode two of Festival City our intrepid host Gareth K Vile headed to National Theatre of Scotland's new, multiple purpose venue Rockvilla for two conversations on plays showing at the Traverse Theatre during the Festival. His first interview is with Jo Clifford on her autobiographical play Eve in which they discuss the lack of trans-narratives in the arts and how these pieces have universal dimensions, after all, we're all just trying to figure out who we are. After critic Lorna Irvine stops by with some theatre recommendations, Gareth is joined by director Cora Bissett to discuss Adam, which tells the story of a boy born in a girl's body in Egypt and who travels to Glasgow in search of liberation. Scottish playwright Stef Smith isn't yet 30, but her plays show a power beyond her years. Philadelphia's Inis Nua Theatre Company, which focuses specifically on presenting contemporary work from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, is a perfect fit for her unique voice. Here, we speak with Smith and director Claire Moyer about Inis Nua's production of Swallow. Smith's tale about a trio of lonely adults all in the midst of life-changing events finds a kind of universality in alienation from the modern world. Smith has received an Olivier Award for her play RoadKill and is an associate artist at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. This is the third play Moyer has directed for Inis Nua. Together they discuss the play's symbolism, getting into the heads of these characters, and the reactions from audiences around the world. To read Mark Cofta's review of Swallow, click here.

TravCast is the Writer's Podcast from the Traverse, Scotland’s New Writing Theatre. Associate Director, Emma Callander, interviews well known playwrights whose work features in the year round programme at the Traverse. In this episode, we bring you a Class Act 2014 special. Class Act is the Traverse Theatre’s flagship education project which introduces pupils from five schools across Edinburgh to playwriting. Aged between 15 and 17, Class Act participants have tried their hand at writing a short play, with the help of five professional playwrights. At all stages of the project, the young writers have been treated in the same way as a Traverse commissioned playwright would be. This year Class Act has engaged with 70 pupils, whose hard work and imaginations have produced 49 fantastic plays – which were performed at the Traverse at the end of January. The five schools who have been part of Class Act 2014 are Broughton High School, Craigmount High School, James Gillespie’s High School, Trinity Academy and Wester Hailes Education Centre. With Kirsty Lang. Alexei Sayle, often described as the godfather of alternative comedy, is returning to solo stand-up shows after a break of more than 16 years. Sayle, who was known throughout the 1980s for his politically charged rants, reflects on the reasons for his stage come-back, and gives his views on the current generation of comedians. Anna Maxwell Martin, Tamzin Outhwaite and Gina McKee star in Di And Viv And Rose, a play written by Amelia Bullmore, well-known to TV audiences for her own roles in Twenty Twelve and Scott and Bailey. The play examines the relationship between three women, from a university house-share in 1983 to the traumas of middle age. Novelist Naomi Alderman reviews. Violinist Vanessa-Mae is taking a year's sabbatical from performing, in order to try to qualify as a skier in the Thai Winter Olympics team. She explains her motives and talks about why she's prepared to risk - through possible injury - her musical career. The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh celebrates its 50th birthday this year. It's marking the occasion with a competition for new playwrights, to write a play in just 500 words. The theatre is now staging the 50 winning entries. Two of the writers discuss the challenge of writing such a short drama and playwright Zinne Harris, one of the judges, considers how to make an impact with a script only one page long.
