CLIMATE ACTION SHOWAPRIL 21ST 2025Produced by Vivien Langford "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"This episode of the Climate Action Show is part of the 89%Project, an initiative of the global journalism collaboration Covering Climate Now. The idea is that although between 80 and 89% of people worldwide want more effective climate ACTION they do not know that they are the majority. At the National Press Club Lunchin April, Greens Leader Adam Bandt reassured voters concerned about the climate crisis, by repeating... "You are not alone." Knowing that we are the majority could create a social tipping point that motivates action.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y69TTh__Npw With the headlines predicting minority goverment after the coming election, we explore what a hung parliament might achieve taking the urgency of the 89% to those who want to keep business as usual. 1.We will hear extracts from Allegra Spender's Climate speech in Parliament in May Allegra urges the government to get off fossil fuels, to stop opening new coal and gas projects, and to move as quickly as possible to renewables. She criticises the Labor Government's lack of a future gas strategy. She argues that their increase of fossil fuel projects creates more climate pollution and is a great disappointment for those who hoped for better.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTodgadZupg 2. Nick Ward standing for the Greens against Independent Allegra Spender in the Sydney Seat of WentworthOur community is facing significant challenges, from housing affordability to the pressing need for climate action. The scourge of racism and antisemitism will weigh heavily on this campaign. I believe in proactive, evidence-based solutions that address these issues head-on. I aim to bring a fresh perspective to Wentworth, advocating for Greens policies that reflect our shared values of fairness, sustainability, and community well-being. 3. Hannah Thomas standing for the Greens against the PM in the Sydney seat of GrayndlerIn 2022 she wrote in Independent Australia"Tuesday was also a heartbreaking day for the most vulnerable of individuals, children, standing up against the state in the courts of the colony. The Full Federal Court unanimously overturned an earlier finding that the Minister for the Environment has a duty to take reasonable care to avoid causing personal injury to children when deciding to approve a coal mine extension. The decision was essentially a green light to the Government and corporations to continue wrecking the climate in the face of overwhelming evidence that doing so would have catastrophic consequences for children. All of the evidence of the existential threat posed by climate change, and the fact that climate change is caused by fossil fuels, was accepted by the Court. And yet, the Minister for the Environment, who holds enormous power and discretion to perpetuate climate change, was found to owe nothing to the children whose futures are being irreparably harmed by climate change.I have no doubt that any number of legal experts would be able to defend each of these decisions based on the most sophisticated of technical arguments. But who cares about finessed points of law when ultimately, these decisions are all patently unjust to anyone with a functioning moral compass?" 4. Motivated by issues such as the ongoing housing crisis and workers' rights, lawyer turned aspiring MP Hannah Thomas is looking to unseat the Prime Minister in Sydney's inner west. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with a former lawyer and the Greens candidate for the electorate of Grayndler, Hannah Thomas, about the different roles she held as a lawyer, what such varied legal experience taught her, her upbringing in Malaysia and eventual move to Australia as an international student, and how experiences with racism have helped form her views. Thomas also discusses her thoughts on the ongoing housing crisis, cost-of-living crisis, and workers' rights, how these issues impact younger Australians, the importance of having minority government in Australia, her interactions with voters in the PM's electorate, running as a young candidate, and why more young lawyers and non-lawyers can and should put their hands up for service. Qualitative data indicate guaranteed income programs—which provide cash directly to beneficiaries—provide real stability to people in need. But, while we wait for the quantitative data to come in, the jury's still out on how to maximize this approach. What do we still have to learn about cash transfers as a means of empowering people, and can making payments directly to households be a more effective way of providing rent subsidies? Dr. Jill Khadduri and Dr. Hannah Thomas discuss the outstanding questions in the latest episode of The Intersect.

Adam Hart investigates a frenzied and voracious fish from South America – the piranha! Said to be able to strip their prey to the bone in mere minutes, there are plenty of gruesome tales about the bubbling bloodbaths that occur when shoals of these hardy fish feed in the freshwaters across South America - from up in Venezuela in the Orinoco River, to the Amazon and down to the Paraná River in Argentina. What role did former United States President Theodore Roosevelt have in creating the piranha's fearsome reputation? And is this reputation misguided? Adam hears what piranhas are really like, both in the wild and in captivity. He learns about how these fish hunt, the impact that humans are having on them and tries to establish if they really are as bloodthirsty as we've been led to believe. Contributors: Marcelo Ândrade is a professor at the Federal University of Maranhão in Brazil. He researches the environments that piranha live in and their behaviour, as well as plastic ingestion by piranhas. Do we fully appreciate the power of art and creativity in reconciliation processes? When considering conflict, both global and local, how can understanding the imago dei (image of God) influence advocacy? Peter and Jo chatted with artist and activist Hannah Thomas. Hannah was selected for Forbes 30 under 30 in 2019, and nominated for a UN Women UK Award in 2020, and her art projects have been exhibited in Buckingham Palace, the Scottish Parliament and the Saatchi Gallery. Through portrait painting and participant-led workshops, she seeks to bring the stories of those who have faced displacement and conflict-related sexual violence into places of influence in the Global North. Particularly amid an ongoing pandemic, how can we learn from Hannah's experiences in post-conflict settings and seek to engage in our own communities in need of restoration? Listen along to the conversation today. You can also discover more about Hannah's work, including examples of her art projects, on her website here.

What norms should you challenge and disrupt? Sarah Durham and Hannah Thomas unpack “thoughtful disruption” and offer different ways of challenging nonprofit communications norms and assumptions.
Sarah Durham shares several great resources that we’ve listed below...here are links for content and references mentioned in the show:Michelle talks with Sarah Durham founder of Big Duck, a Brooklyn, New York-based nonprofit communications firm. Sarah is the author of The Nonprofit Communications Engine: A Leader’s Guide to Managing Mission-Driven Marketing and Communications and Brandraising: How Nonprofits Raise Visibility and Money through Smart Communications, and she hosts The Smart Communications PodcastReferences then Definitions: Communications: Sarah says, “...in a nonprofit, communications is the practice of creating and sustaining mind share and engagement that advances the mission...communications is not always just about how you communicate with people who are outside of your organization, it can even be about internal communications, how you communicate inside your organization” Brand: Sarah says, ”...the best way to understand branding in a nonprofit context is to think of your organization's brand as your organization's voice. And again, your brand is a part of your communications. It's one of three outcomes that a successful communications program can drive. So how does your organization write and design and speak about itself? How do you explain the whole story that is your organization not just a particular program?” Marketing: Sarah says, “marketing is actually a slice of communications, but communications isn't even bigger tent than marketing. Marketing is usually about getting a pretty particular group of people to take an action, oftentimes like become a member or come to an event or sign up for something.” Great advice to leaders of nonprofits: “...a lot of people who are responsible for directing communications in nonprofits, like an executive director, for instance, or a leadership team, don't have any formal background in marketing or communications. And they probably don't have a budget to hire somebody with deep expertise in marketing and communications... I wrote this book is to encourage an organization and the leader of the organization or leaders to think about what the outcomes you want to achieve are, what communications can actually achieve for your organization or how it can help advance your mission.” About throwing volunteers at communications: “...the organizations I've seen use volunteers really well are organizations where there's somebody within the organization who is able to be really clear about the goal of communicating and make sure they've got the right volunteers with the right skill sets and the right expertise who are working in a coordinated way, not just in an ad hoc, choose your own adventure way.” Check out this ebook Sarah mentions - available free! It was an utter joy speaking to the inspirational chef Hannah Thomas from cafe Herbs & Wild for this week’s episode of Healthily. I’m always energised by meeting women who have the passion, energy and confidence to follow their dreams, not to mention the skill, intellect and work ethic that’s needed to make these dreams become a reality. Hats off to Hannah for the successful opening of her cafe this year of all years! 2020 has been pretty dire for so many in the hospitality industry, but there are some small beacons of hope out there, and Hannah’s story is one of them. Hannah is a talented chef, forager, fermenter and all round foodie hero of mine, so I was delighted to speak to her to learn more about making fermented foods at home. The chemistry of fermenting is so interesting, and the health benefits that come from eating ‘live’ food and drink is well understood. We were also able to weave some festive cheer into our conversation too, seeing as we’re so close to Christmas! Hannah shares some lovely ideas for brining a creative and tasty spin to your Christmas veggies, and we very happily discuss chocolate too! I hope you enjoy listening to our chat as much as I enjoyed recording it. www.nicola-moore.com

Chad Kaiser (New Dungeness Light Station Association) In episode 2 of the podcast, host Jeremy D'Entremont interviews Chad Kaiser, general manager of the New Dungeness Light Station in Sequim, Washington. Chad is also a lampist (Fresnel lens expert) and preservationist, and a "part two" of this interview will be heard in a future episode. Chad and Jeremy (why does that sound familiar?) talk about the remoteness of New Dungeness, which is at the end of a five mile sand spit, and about the "keeper" program that offers individuals, families, and groups an opportunity to spend a week at the station while performing maintenance duties and providing tours. Jeremy and co-host Cindy Johnson tell the story of the Pharos of Alexandria, the world's first great lighthouse, and a model for many lighthouses that followed. Jeremy and Cindy discuss a 1971 movie, The Light at the Edge of the World, starring Kirk Douglas and Yul Brynner. The film was based on a novel by Jules Verne. It’s one of the rare adventure movies ever made where a lighthouse keeper is the hero. There's another trivia question and a chance to win prizes. Congratulations to Nancy McDowell and Jen Lewis, winners of the trivia contest in episode 1. The correct answer was that Hannah Thomas of Plymouth Lighthouse in Massachusetts was the first woman keeper in America in 1776.

Liz and Evan are back! After a nice long summer hiatus, Now Screaming’s 50th episode spooktacular has finally arrived! Rather than spinning the roulette as usual, Liz and Evan decided to invite some friends of the podcast into to the studio to revisit some of their favorites from the Now Screaming catalogue. Alex Christie chose THE BABADOOK (2:19), inspiring an enlightening discussion about motherhood and reality vs. allegory, as well as a deep-dive on this year’s horror favorite HEREDITARY. Jessica Dwyer selected Now Screaming discovery MINE GAMES (23:10) to discuss her passion for time travel in film, as well as how essential it is to stick the landing. Hannah Thomas brought old favorite RE-ANIMATOR (39:44) to the table, and the gang got messy in their conversation about splatter gore, that unforgettable score, and the importance of having fun. Katie MacKendrick went way back in the podcast's archives for her selection: THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (54:20), acknowledging that it's really just all about Ryan Reynolds and his abs. There was still time to talk about #realisticmicrofiche, the role of librarians in horror movies, and how popcorn horror can be a gateway into the genre. And finally, in the best "Thank You, Wes Craven" bit Now Screaming has ever had, returning guest James Skosky presented his comprehensive thesis on WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE (1:09:20), leading a rousing discussion about the role of storytelling and myth in culture and proving that horror is essential to the human experience. Thanks, as always, to Wes Craven for being a constant inspiration and to Jonas Sileika for continuing to provide the perfect score to our show. Above all, thank you, dear listeners, for sticking with Now Screaming for our first 50 episodes. Here's to many, many more!
April 24th, 2018 Hannah Thomas shared on Bad Friendship Advice, concluding our semester-long Bad Advice Series. Often we hear the phrase when it comes to friendship, "forgive and forget." In this message Hannah really unpacks what it looks like to reconcile relationships, have good boundaries and to live biblically in this area of our friendships. Discussion Questions: What do you think are some marks of good, healthy friendship? Have you ever forgiven someone and still cut them from your life? What are some good boundaries for friendships? How about some poor boundaries? Have you ever needed to get over something or talk to someone? Was it difficult? Do you feel like it was worth it? Is there anyone who you are not at peace with currently? What do you think your next steps are in moving towards peace?
