When was the last time you said, “Why bother?”When overwhelm, exhaustion, burnout, and the weight of responsibility set in, it's easy to become cynical and ask, "What's the point?" Cynicism can be a defense mechanism, shielding us from difficult emotions or experiences, but it also traps us in survival mode, limiting our ability to see new possibilities or paths forward. Constantly being in fight-or-flight mode makes it difficult to think long-term and to rest and reset as needed.Today, we're exploring what, "Why bother?" really indicates for leaders. It serves as a sign of exhaustion, an overactive nervous system, or even reactivated trauma. Our guest encourages us to transform "Why bother?" from a stuck and cynical question into a productive inquiry that directs us towards what truly matters.Jennifer Louden invites us to flip the script on “Why bother?” from cynical and stuck to a generative question to lead you toward what really matters to you. Jennifer has been involved in the self-care movement for years. She authored the bestseller, The Woman's Comfort Book in 1992 and has since written numerous books on well-being and creative living, including The Woman's Retreat Book and Why Bother? She enjoys coaching writers and is currently working on a fantasy novel where older women use their power to buy humanity time from the climate crisis.Listen to the full episode to hear:Why the “why bother” stage is a normal part of life, and how it presents an opportunity to resetHow holding too tightly to an identity can keep us from seeing possibilities for changeHow exiling and not claiming what we want leads to “why bother”How taking action on the things that matter to us cultivates hopeHow accepting that some things in life are not fixable can liberate us to step into new possibilitiesHow to begin cultivating a relationship with your desiresLearn more about Jennifer Louden:WebsiteIt's Not Too LateLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:War and Peace, Leo TolstoyFor All MankindWicked Little LettersThe Mary Tyler Moore Show

Jennifer gives us a roadmap on what we can expect when we lose our will to bother about something. One of the big aha's I've had that Jennifer taught me was claiming my WIIFM -what's in it for me?  For many of us are servant type leaders – we love to serve, give and overdeliver.  We make it all about our clients and our team.  That's why we do the work we do – right? But somewhere in there we need to own what is in it for us.  We are not martyr's and as Jennifer puts it, it can take on an ugly form.  We avoid this by stating what we are getting out of the deal. You need to be clear and own it.  This will keep in invested in the long game and it is not selfish of you to call it out it. It is a responsible act of integrity to yourself, your clients, and your work. Jennifer is a wellspring of wisdom and I can't wait for you to listen to this episode and get inspired to get your bother on as Jennifer Louden shows us her way.   Episode 11:  Settling Into the Unknown? With much of the world under quarantine, I was wondering if today's episode with bestselling author Jennifer Louden, whose new book Why Bother comes out next week, would resonate with this moment of challenge and unpredictability. Why should we be talking about desire when everyone is focused on survival? Here's why: because if you're safe, in a stable household, and feel a call to re-evaluate what is meaningful in your life, then this current pause on life as we know it may be the ideal time to discover the desire for what's next. As Jennifer says, “If there is a stirring in you that something is being re-evaluated, if there is relief that you are not having to do something that you were doing before quarantine, if there is a feeling that desire has been something you've wanted to know for a long time” then the Why Bother book is just what you need to start that conversation. I'm super-excited for you to learn from Jennifer's deep well of wisdom! We're in a huge “Why Bother” moment right now, reckoning with what we care about, and what it means to live and to engage in our lives. Maybe you've been playing it safe, and this deep pandemic pause is coaxing you to believe that you can live a new more satisfying story. And maybe it's not, but you'd like to get the inspiration to no longer coast through life. What if during this time of quarantine, we decided to stop putting so much effort into being unfulfilled, judgmental and self-doubting in our lives? Jennifer Louden reminds us that “we can learn do it differently.” Maybe this breakdown moment is just that opportunity to break through to a fully alive you. Join us on this episode for this daring conversation. Key Takeaways How to enter any moment and find the desire for what's next. Why we're not afraid of change, but our brains evolved to keep us defended. Learn a powerful map to discovering your fully alive self. Listen to Jennifer share two stories from her book, one about the time she was on Oprah and her lesson on enoughness. Why desire is a one-word feminist manifesto. What a healthy relationship with desire looks like and the three parts of desire. Do a search for creating useful content on google. There's enough opinion and education on the topic to make your head… wait for it… Explode. And that's pretty much what my head's been doing since I first heard this phrase. Create useful content, Anne. Waking me up in the middle of night. Are you being USEFUL enough, Anne? And off and on this whole year I'd look at other people's content and wonder… How the heck is THIS useful to the world? I started pulling apart every blog post I'd see, challenging it to be useful to me, which is hilarious because as you know there's a lot of useless but fun info on the internet. And that's when it hit me...about being useful...and why I wanted to dig in and discuss this moving target of being useful… In this week's episode, I explore: What does being useful really mean in the context of your online business? Who decides if something is useful or trashable? Why is creating useful content a challenge to most online entrepreneurs? And...what do you need to know about your audience in order to get even close to figuring out what is useful for them on any given day? If you've ever wondered whether you're being useful or not, listen to today's episode of the Fearless Launching show and then leave me a comment below. Ok let's dive in!
