Today's episode is close to my heart because last year I was in a career winter and it would have helped so much to have realised it sooner so that I could have managed my expectations and leaned into trust. One of the bravest things that we can do as leaders is trust the season we're in to bring us what we need instead of trying to force it to bring us what we want. Just as Earth moves in seasons and cycles, our careers go through times of expansion and new beginnings (Spring), success and attainment (Summer), change and slow down (Autumn), integration and rest (Winter). When we move with our seasons, we understand what life is asking of us and can show up for what is needed with intention, resourcefulness, the right mindset and security that we are in the right place and the right time, no matter what our circumstances may suggest.  In this episode I share  * A detailed deep dive into each career season and its impact on your energy levels, opportunity generation, internal vs external orientation, pace of career progress and more * My approach to understanding the season you're in * Determining what your season means for how you invest your time and energy and calibrate your expectations * How to combine career seasons with annual themes (listen to Part 1 in Episode 41) to set the right goals for your leadership and career that will actually make you successful in the long term * Using the themes of your season to review your year in an empowering way that keeps your self-confidence intact - especially if you're in a career Winter   Themes: Leadership, goal-setting, career vision, seasonal planning, annual planning, grounded mindset, self-leadership   -- Join me in the Abundant Leaders Circle for “Starting strong: Setting your 2025 career goals”, an online annual planning workshop for high-performance leaders on Saturday 25 January 2025. Together we will avoid the overwhelm and overambition that sets us up for disappointment by setting inspiring but achievable practical goals for our year that align with our vision, honour the limitations of our demanding careers and put the right mindset and enabling support in place to help us to succeed. Join me as we explore a different way to set annual goals. Last year I decided to plan my year based primarily on 4 themes instead of a list of goals and it transformed my growth. I was able to consistently show up to the theme more than I had ever been able to show up in the past for a long list of daily actions. It also brought me more balance to how I managed my energy during the year. Instead of consistently pressing for achievement and change, I left space for reflection on the theme, learning about its wisdom, taking actions big and small, and leaving capacity for things to change.  Topics discussed: * A practical way to use themes instead of goals in your annual planning for your leadership and career aspirations * A detailed understanding of 9 core universal themes that govern the human experience * Accepting the shadow that comes with the light of each theme * Understanding your hero's journey across your career and how to figure out where you are in your story arc so you can work with vs. against its energy * Identifying which theme resonates for you in 2025 and how to work with it this year   -- Join me in the Abundant Leaders Circle for “Starting strong: Setting your 2025 career goals”, an online annual planning workshop for high-performance leaders on Saturday 25 January 2025. In this episode of All About Capital Campaigns, hosts Amy Eisenstein and Andrea Kihlstedt dive into one of the most crucial aspects of campaign planning: setting a realistic and effective capital campaign goal. Whether you're building a new facility, expanding your programs, or establishing an endowment, determining the right working goal is far from simple. Amy and Andrea discuss why a working or draft goal is essential and explore the factors that influence how much you can realistically raise for your project. They explain why organizations often misunderstand the role of feasibility studies, the importance of accounting for all project costs (from architectural fees to startup program costs), and why it's crucial to think big early in the planning process. You'll learn how to test your goal, inspire your board—especially more conservative members—to embrace a higher target, and the risks of setting a goal that's too low. Plus, the hosts share research from their latest Capital Campaign Pro Benchmark Report, which reveals that many organizations raise their goals after a feasibility study, further emphasizing the flexibility needed in goal-setting. Key takeaways include: How to create a comprehensive project budget. The role of a feasibility study in refining your goal. When and how to adjust your campaign goal throughout the process. How your campaign goal can inspire larger gifts from your lead donors. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. We all are blessed with minds to envision the future we want.  Without a  doubt, we can be the person we want to be. However, it's the actions we take today that pave the way to that envisioned future. Taking the first step isn't always easy, but it's often the most crucial.  When it involves stepping into unknown territory like entrepreneurship, the task can be  especially difficult.    Hence, we must be reminded that starting small and learning as you go can lead to significant success. Each step we take, no matter how small, moves us closer to our goals. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the vastness of the task ahead, but by breaking it down into smaller, manageable steps, we can make progress. It's about embracing the journey, learning from setbacks, and continually pushing forward.    Esaias Guthrie is an athlete, entrepreneur, and a graduate of Jackson State University who is now returning to further his education in the master's program. Guthrie made a name for himself during the 2021 season in which he led the MEAC in interceptions (4) and ranked third in passes defended (9). Earlier this year, Esaias announced that he is starting a group home business for the community.   He loves to help those in need of assisted living in Jackson and surrounding areas. It is called “Guthrie Haven Homes.”    In this episode with Esaias Guthrie, we will discover the unique journey of a student-athlete turned entrepreneur, and how his experiences on the field have shaped his approach to business and leadership. Our conversation touches on his lesson about time management, prioritization, and skill development and how he has applied these skills to his venture, Guth Haven Homes. Buckle up as we learn how to get started in the world of entrepreneurship and make a positive impact in our communities.   "Getting started now is the best thing because plans, sometimes they just die, and so just jumping in and figuring out for yourself is the best teacher." – Esaias Guthrie   Topics Covered: (00:00:34) Introducing our special guest, Esaias Guthrie. You have to focus." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   "I really don't think people appreciate the amount of work and commitment that it takes to be a student athlete." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   "You can read books; you can study for years and years and years but the only way to truly learn is to get started." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   "You have to plan for yourself, keep your head down, and keep moving forward. It's for you to tease out if it's just extraneous noise and people are trying to distract you from your plan and from your calling. If not, just keep moving forward." – Esaias Guthrie   "Don't be afraid to learn and fail because one failure for you can maybe a success for someone else." – Esaias Guthrie   Connect with Esaias Guthrie: Email: Guthriehavenhomes@gmail.com Website: https://esaiasguthrie-merch.myshopify.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/EsaiasGuthrie Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sai.less/   Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com   This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to.
