The person behind the business. There's nothing like unpacking the finer details of someone's story. I see the threads of details that aren't common to the naked eye. With Jess' story, she shares her personal journey of facing a fatal car accident at a young age and the impact it had on her life. Instead of letting the tragedy consume her, Jess found the strength to turn her pain into purpose and use her experience to help others. But that's not where the story ends. In fact, her journey is unfolding in spectacular ways and she shares with us how she started in public speaking business and why she blew up a very successful business model to align with her values and goals.Episode Timestamps00:05:30 - Jess's Journey and Personal Growth00:10:00 - Pivotal Moment: Fatal Car Accident00:15:00 - Making a Decision to Share Her Story00:20:00 - Transitioning to Prison and Finding Purpose00:25:00 - Impact of Incarceration on Personal Growth00:30:00 - Starting a Business Post-Prison00:35:00 - Building a Business Online00:40:00 - Transitioning from One-on-One to Group Coaching00:45:00 - Identifying Blind Spots and Customized ImpactLeave Episode FeedbackI want your input. Today on the Mindset First Podcast, I'm excited to share with you a woman I recently met live (I had been on her email list for a couple of years). Jessica Rasdall is a public speaking strategist who has such an easy manner that you can't help fall in love with her - off stage and on. I wanted to have Jessica on to talk about how to use speaking to scale your business because it's a tool that so many business owners think of as a nice to have or offshoot of their main marketing tools. But Jessica is a big believer that speaking can help you make a bigger impact and help you grow faster than most other forms of marketing. Today on the podcast we talk about how to use speaking to scale and how you can make this an integral part of your strategy - especially when it comes to building the know-like-trust that allows people to purchase from you. This episode is a must-listen for any business owner who is ready to scale your business and wants to explore the idea of speaking as a means to getting to the next level! I love Jessica's insights and some of the surprising information she shares.
As business owners, CEOs and the visionaries of our companies, it's important for us to identify our own growth roles as we make hires and build our teams. Often, for many of us this means we're able to step into a more lucrative and visible role as the face of our company. In doing so, speaking is one of the number one ways to accelerate our company's growth, widen the net we cast for our visibility, and radiate the impact our business has on the world.Jessica shares her deep and powerful message of how she overcome intense and turbulent personal challenges and she answers all the questions I could ever ask about how to discover our own message and share it with the world.Full shownotes are at www.joytolead.com/jessica-rasdallPOWERFUL QUOTES FROM JESSICA RASDALL“When we start to shift our focus on the difference we're making and less on how it's being received, it becomes so much easier.”“The only story that matters is the one your audience needs to hear. If we don't start with the question of ‘what do they need from me,' you're going to tell the wrong story.”“Most of the frustration from speaking is not because your presentation isn't great. It's because you're not leveraging it the way your business needs you to leverage it.”“You feel like you're talking to everybody, but from the stage you only need to talk to one person. When you can focus on the one person you're meant to impact, it's so much more impactful.”“If you've ever sat in the audience and thought, ‘I'm meant to be up there,' you probably should!”Connect with Jessica RasdallListen to the Speak to Scale PodcastMeet Jessica on her websiteLearn about Jessica's Speaking Strategy AcademyDownload your free Speak to Scale Roadmap: Your blueprint for scaling your business from the stageHelpful Links and ResourcesFor more information on the Leadership Academy, visit www.joytolead.com/academy!

With Jessica Rasdall When we talk about the things in life that humans fear the most, public speaking often tops the list. In fact our collective fear of standing up in front of a group and talking is so great that some surveys suggest we actually fear it more than death. And, on one hand I totally get it, having had total panic attacks myself about needing to speak on stage before a crowd, or into this podcast mic even. But on the other hand, doesn’t it seem strange that we're so friggin afraid of something inherently not life threatening? Like, what exactly are we so afraid of, anyway? What do we think will happen to us? We're unlikely to suffer any real physical or lasting harm, and for the most part good things come from public speaking. I mean, for one thing it's great for building credibility, authority and growing our businesses – so why all the fear? Well, today's guest, Jessica Rasdall has definitely figured out how to overcome the thing we fear most as she has made her way onto countless stages telling her incredibly gut wrenching story to hundreds of thousands of people. She has told her story of turning her “mess into a message” and has been featured on major international media outlets such as ABC’s 20/20, Katie Couric, The Guardian, MTV, Netflix, and many more. I mean just Google her – she's a big deal and so is her story. And while the fear of public speaking is super real, and the idea of showing up in front of masses can be totally anxiety inducing, THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING YOU'RE MISSING THAT COULD TURN this all AROUND FOR YOU. And today Jessica is letting us in on the secret of how to flip this self induced anxiety on it's head. You're about to learn the one thing that is far more important than a slightly irrational fear of people looking at you while you talk. So get ready, you're gonna learn a lot. Also I want to add a trigger warning here because this episode discusses a drunk driving incident resulting in loss of life. In this episode, Jessica talks about: The transformative story that brought Jessica into the world of public speaking and storytelling for business owners. 3:18Billboard statements – telling the story that supports the message your audience needs to hear. 7:33How to find your one (yes one) key message. 10:13How to dismantle objections in advance to be receptive to hearing your message. 12:11How to overcome the fear of speaking (being an introvert is NOT an excuse). 15:09Speaking not being for everyone, and that is okay! 17:43Getting to the bottom of what your audience really needs to hear from you. 18:28Tips for ensuring that your message will resonate before you go live. 21:10Getting comfortable with your message and staying in your lane as a way to build confidence. 23:35The value of recording yourself speaking. 26:57Using public speaking to grow your business. 28.37The four steps to getting to the stage. 29:44Helping people tackle their mindset around public speaking. 32:11What common mistakes are people making in their talks and how to avoid them. 33:38 I’m going to challenge you to go write that billboard statement today, that is huge for you is going to gain so much clarity on what it is you’re speaking about, and what message the difference that you’re making for the audience. So I want you to really sit down and think about “if I can only tell them one thing, What will I tell them?”.Jessica Rasdall Wow. Such an amazing conversation with Jessica. There's just so much to stew on. I have a feeling you're gonna think about this episode a few more times before the day is out. Here's what stuck with me… while the fear of public speaking is super real, and the idea of showing up in front of masses is totally anxiety inducing, your WHY should always be paramount. I love how Jessica explains that public speaking isn’t actually about you, but it's about your message and the people who need to hear it. It is about leaving people who see you and hear you better than you found them. That's what stuck to my ribs, if i can use that in this context, and, when she put this spin on it, it is easy to see that serving your audience should be far more important than a slightly irrational fear of how you will be received. And then I got chills because I remembered that's exactly the message I needed to hone within myself to bring this podcast to you. And, if I didn’t think about how much it meant to me to bring this to YOU, how that was far more important to me than my fear of judgement, well, this podcast wouldn’t exist and that makes me sad. Because, you and I wouldn’t be meeting cool business experts, learning new things about common business topics, and growing and learning and leveling up our businesses, together. So yeah, we grew this great little podcast with a great little following and super amazing expert guests all because one day I finally faced it that YOU are more important than my silly fears. So yeah, the next time you fear something, like something irrational (not hungry bears you should definitely fear hungry bears) but, your fear for being yourself, or showing up as you are, or doing a live video, or public speaking, any of that stuff. The next time you find yourself sitting in irrational fear like that, I challenge you to remind yourself that its only holding you back, and I challenge you to remember Jessica's message and then think about the people who are missing out on what you have to give because of your silly fear. Ok. Okay. Thank you once again for tuning into another episode of the workshop weekly podcast. There are so many ways to elevate your visibility, but one strategy alone isn’t going to get you much traction. Instead, you need to use multiple tools and strategies in your business, regularly, to continue to get you and your business noticed. But that’s often where business owners hit pause. They don’t want to put themselves out there because they’re afraid of what others will think or say. They don’t like how they look on camera or they think they’re a bad writer. It’s time to get out of your own way and get on the right track to business success. No one will know you’re there or what you can do for them unless you start getting more visible online. In this week’s episode of the Stories in Small Business podcast, I’m sharing eight ways you can elevate your online visibility so you can be the first person your audience thinks of when they need your products or services. Today on the show we have Jessica Rasdall, a motivational speaker, bestselling author, public speaking strategist, and host to the Speak to Scale Podcast to talk to us about crafting your story for the virtual stage. Now that we are homebound and communicating with our audiences online, we can do with some help when it comes to showing up as ourselves and helping people rather than just have a self-serving online presence. You’ve heard the vulnerability piece – that you need to be relatable and reveal your “humanness” to your followers, but what is the right amount of sharing? Jessica walks us through a formula for breaking your story down into three acts so that it is most helpful to people, a structure that outlines the before, middle, and after phases of your story. Each of these three phases is important: from hooking the audience and relating to their experiences to showing them how the significant event changed your life and the difficult decisions you have had to make. For Jessica, the most important aspect is the motivation behind sharing your story, and if its primary purpose is not to help your audience in some way, you might want to reconsider. When you can focus on the one person you're meant to impact, it's so much more impactful.”“If you've ever sat in the audience and thought, ‘I'm meant to be up there,' you probably should!”Connect with Jessica RasdallListen to the Speak to Scale PodcastMeet Jessica on her websiteLearn about Jessica's Speaking Strategy AcademyDownload your free Speak to Scale Roadmap: Your blueprint for scaling your business from the stageHelpful Links and ResourcesFor more information on the Leadership Academy, visit www.joytolead.com/academy!To learn more about the Dream to Team Hiring Course & Template Bundle, click here!Need 1:1 Hiring Support and Strategy? Today on the show Jodi interviews Jessica Rasdall, author of Shattered (2019). Here are some highlights from their conversation: Jodi and Jessica discussed the origin of her book. Jessica shared that the idea had been brewing for 11 years before she finally wrote and published Shattered. Jessica couldn’t find the book she was looking for on the bookstore shelf, and her mother encouraged her to write it. As a tip for other author-entrepreneurs, Jessica suggested taking off the pressure by remembering that this is not the only thing you’ll ever put out there. She also recommended getting someone to help navigate the publishing world. Jessica noted that one of the difficult parts to navigate while writing the book was knowing what to share and what not to share. Knowing that the book would be a legacy piece of content put extra pressure to make it good. Once she received permission to not include everything, it was easier to commit to keep going. One of the fun things that’s happened since publishing the book is that Jessica has been able to change the way she navigates speaker negotiations. She’s been able to add profit without increasing her time worked. Jessica noted that she’s typically reading more than one book, and she’s currently reading The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks and re-reading Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Today on the show Jodi interviews Jessica Rasdall about books and speaking. Here are some highlights: Jodi and Jessica talked about the importance of knowing your path in order to marry a book with a speaking platform. Jessica noted three questions to answer: Who is the book for? Who do I want to speak to? How do these serve my business Jessica noted that if you already have a book and want to start speaking, you have a “leg up” on others — and you should be speaking already! Because the barrier to entry in the business world is low (i.e., anyone can create a website and call themselves an expert), anything that can set you apart from others is a good tool. Jessica recommended putting yourself in an event organizer’s shoes. When looking to fill events with speakers and looking at profile after profile, and application after application, a book can lend that credibility that sets you apart. Jessica shared that she had been speaking to audiences for more than ten years but that once she had a book, it allowed her audience to keep transforming and to keep their connection going with her. Jessica noted that she sees a spike in books purchases every time she has a speaking engagement.. Jessica defined speaking to mean more than “just” speaking from a stage. Any time you share your story with an audience, whether it’s on a podcast, in a summit, at a conference, and more, that’s speaking. Jessica shared a tip that reinforced her belief that you must always know your numbers when it comes to the book so that you can better negotiate with event organizers. She said that often her book is included in her speaking package (like a gift to the audience) rather than as part of a post-presentation sales funnel or back-of-the-room sales. I am so insanely excited to introduce you to Jessica Rasdall. If you haven’t heard Jessica’s story before, listen up because you’re in for some kickass truth and inspiration. Jessica is a motivational speaker and coach for female entrepreneurs. She started speaking about ten years ago, but not to female entrepreneurs. And it wasn’t something she’d planned to do. It began after one night her freshman year of college, when she was driving, with her best friend in the passenger seat, after having a few drinks. The car crashed and Jessica’s best friend died in the passenger seat. It’s a hard story to tell. It’s a hard story to carry. But Jessica learned that there’s power in our stories, even that ones that are hard to tell. And our mess can become a powerful message. Now she teaches female entrepreneurs how to unearth their signature stories and share them with flair. Jessica is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met and I’m so excited for her to share her story with you.

Today I am talking to motivational speaker, transformational coach and story expert Jessica Rasdall. All this week in The Balanced Entrepreneur Facebook Group, we are talking about Webinars, and how to leverage them to make automated sales and get a ton of phone calls on your calendar without lifting a finger. Jessica is an expert at unlocking the power of your story, which is a critical piece of any webinar, virtual event or live event. You have to have that story. Time Stamped Show Notes 0:00 – Introduction 1:00 – Jessica is a motivational speaker and transformational coach who has shared her story of turning her mess into a message for nearly 10 years. When Jessica was in college, she made a life-altering decision that resulted in the death of her best friend. Jessica spoke to over 15,000 young adults across the country before she was sentenced to prison, and today she helps entrepreneurs craft their signature stories. 1:50 – Jessica’s clients are transforming what were once considered liabilities into some of their greatest business assets. 4:00 – Jessica has three tips for leveraging storytelling in your business. 4:15 – Tip #1: Leverage your story to turn people into brand advocates. When you are thinking about your story and your business, and making that connection, you have to understand the power of that. If you take the time to stand behind your message, people start to trust you. Don’t give them everything about your story, because that will make them more interested once they trust you. 7:00 – When you craft your story, you basically tell people: Who you are What you do Who you do it for Why in the world you do it And what’s happening because of that 8:25 – “The part I think that we tend to leave out in our story, that is just as important as where you’ve been … is, ‘Where are you going?’ ” If you can cast a vision and craft that out for other people, they will want to stand with you. You don’t want your audience to be waiting. 10:10 – “When they can feel like they’re on this journey with you, they’re going to go to bat for you. They’re all in. That’s the difference between having a follower and having a brand advocate.” 11:10 – Tip #2: Own your own story. If you don’t tell your story, someone else is going to tell it for you. “Once you put it out there the way you want to put it out there, people will continue to spread it.” 12:45 – How do you handle the emotion behind your story so that you can own it? Focus on the audience you are there to serve, and how you plan to serve them. Realize that if you cry through the whole presentation, your message will not come through. When you are crafting your story, try to separate emotion from facts. Look at what happened and establish the facts of the situation. Once you begin to just look at the pieces of it like a puzzle, it becomes a lot easier to crack. “My client needs something specific from me. So I’m going to do whatever I have to do to take those puzzles pieces and arrange them in a way that’s going to serve them the best.” 18:40 – “My biggest tip I can give you when you’re telling your story is to make it visual.” What are they focusing on? If it’s not the message, you need to change something. 20:15 - Tip #3: The power of crafting your story. When you take the time to craft out your story, it gives you the power to rewrite it. “If I was going to share my story, I wanted it to be from a place of power, not from pain.” 23:05 – “You can take your story and share it in so many outlets, as long as you are creating a message in there.” 23:35 – Something small that we often leave out is why we do what we do. When we are giving an elevator pitch, we tell people what we do, but we also need to tell them why. Make them understand you are being authentic, and they will be more likely to reciprocate. 26:25 – Jessica has a gift: a worksheet that will help you craft out your own story.
