English filmmaker Gareth Evans has made a name for himself with visceral, kinetic action that redefined the genre, particularly with cult classics like "The Raid" and "The Raid 2." The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Jessie Mei Li, Luis Guzmán, Timothy Olyphant, Justin Cornwell, and Yoko Miyamoto. In the latest episode of The Discourse, Evans joins the podcast to discuss the long-awaited thriller, how he brought Hardy into his action sandbox, and why he might be warming back up to the idea of returning to the world of "The Raid."

How did Jessie Mei Li go from teaching assistant to West End alum and lead of Netflix's “Shadow & Bone” in just a few short years? Besides a bundle of talent (always helps!), the young actor comes equipped with a laser focus on what they want. “When I feel like I'm on the right path, it's almost like you're not going to stop me from doing it,” Li tells us. “When I got the part in 'Shadow & Bone,' I was like, 'well yeah, that feels right to me.' I don't think it comes out of arrogance, I think I'm very good at feeling when something feels right. I'm not afraid, in that moment, to go for it.” In this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, Li takes us behind the scenes of the Netflix fantasy series' season 2 return and explains how co-star chemistry has made grueling production days smoother. --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Everyone probably expected that Laura Marie and Jessica Marie would fall over themselves for Ben Barnes as The Darkling and everyone would be correct. Everyone also probably expected that Mal would not be a favorite and ding ding ding you would also be correct. Join Laura Marie and Jessica Marie as they compare and contrast the *show and the books * in an episode that runs a bit long and contains gushing praise for the women, the casting, the crows, and Milo. They do have thoughts that aren't all out praise though, because the books are always better than the show??? *This episode was recorded before the stunt double fiasco. *Jessie Mei Li uses she/they pronouns. This is one that Laura Marie and Jessica Marie will have to revisit. Less of a deep dive and more of a shallow skim, Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are discussing themes and tropes and not so much the plot of the duology. The love for Nina and Inej is strong as is the desire to age up these characters, because being a real life 17 and the dregs at 17 are two completely different things. This was recorded before the premier of the show and the excitement is clear toward the end. They'll take a mulligan and go deeper in a re-read for season 2, promise promise promise. *Jessie Mei Li uses she/they pronouns There are no spoilers in this episode outside of the Six of Crows Duology, but there are topics surrounding addiction, substance abuse, violence and sex work. *Thank you for listening to us! British breakout Jessie Mei Li joins Present Company to discuss “Shadow and Bone,” the phenomenon based on Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling fantasy series, in which the 25 year-old stars as Alina Starkov, an orphan mapmaker with an extraordinary power. Jessie discusses how the show first came to her, how her personal experiences helped her relate to the character, and her onscreen chemistry with co-star Archie Renaux. She also talks about how her acting instincts have helped her navigate challenging moments in her life, and how her parents are handling the show’s success.
If you are as obsessed with Netflix's new smash hit TV show, Shadow and Bone as I am you are going to LOVE this episode of Make It Reign with it's star, Jessie Mei Li. But if you haven't watched it already (where have you been?!?) Shadow and Bone is basically Netflix’s answer to Game of Thrones. It follows Jessie’s character - Alina; a young woman with unique powers who has overcome her fair share of monsters, hot boys and the fold. Think of it as just another day socialising at the park, then! Before she found the power within her on screen, Jessie had dropped out of university and was working as a special-education teaching assistant. She enrolled in some acting lessons, and went on to land an agent and a role in the West End production of All About Eve before Netflix came calling! In this episode Jessie opens up about how the rise in anti-asian hate has affected her, her and her family's experiences of racism and how she navigated feeling like an 'outsider' growing up. There are so many amazing words about defining your identity on your own terms and refusing to adhere to the labels society can place on you, so I hope you love listening to Jessie just as much as I did chatting to her! In Episode 25, the Boomtron Crew, and guest host, Caity, take an in-depth look at Shadow and Bone, starring Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Ben Barnes, and Freddy Carter. Shadow and Bone combines elements of Leigh Bardugo's "Shadow and Bones" trilogy, as well as her "Six of Crows" duology. In the series, Alina Starkov (Mei Li) discovers that she is the long-awaited for Sun Summoner, and becomes the center of the struggle between good and evil, as well as a sought after commodity. The Boomtron Crew gives their thoughts about the series, as well as discusses what else is coming up for them on Netflix. You can listen to Caity on her own podcast, Disney Plus Roulette, as well as her husband's D&D podcast, I Roll Die with a Little Help From My Friends.
