Jodie Fox was always meant to be a lawyer but the universe had other plans. A chance conversation on a Gold Coast beach led to her abandoning her career to start Shoes of Prey with cofounders Michael Fox and Mike Knapp. Jodie was the face of the business. The brand's rapid rise to success saw it gain fame as a startup darling and cemented Jodie's status as one of Australia's leading entrepreneurs. Then after almost a decade of riding a wave of success, the brand went pear-shaped and Jodie was faced with the heartbreaking decision of closing the doors on a business she has described as “her baby”. In this episode of First Act, Jodie takes a look back at her entrepreneurial journey, explains why she left a career in law and marketing behind to go into business for herself, dives into the genesis of Shoes of Prey, explores the startup's rise and demise and shares the many learnings she's had along the way. It's a raw and emotional story and Jodie never holds back on the details - no matter how painful.

A multi-million dollar business, an international brand, the journey through liquidation and beyond. That's the story of Shoes of Prey. Jodie Fox grew up in Lismore, a country town in New South Wales, the daughter of a Sicilian mother and Australian father. Starting out in law she took a step into advertising (and a huge pay cut) before she found her feet at Shoes of Prey. A business that went from an idea tossed around at the beach by three friends to scrappy start-up to venture-backed global business with more than 200 staff, over $US 27 million in funding and legions of followers around the world. A business she devoted a decade of her life to; ended up closing the door in August 2018, it wasn't until months later, in February 2019, that the company officially went into liquidation. Jodie has written about her experience - the highs and the bloody tough lows in her book Reboot: Probably More Than You Ever Wanted to Know about Starting a Global Business. Jodie shares what life is like navigating the new identity as a Mum, the practical tools she uses to manage her mental health, and the lessons she has learnt along the way. You'll walk away from this conversation with the sense that even when life throws curve balls, anything is possible. Soak up the insights and wisdom from the life-long learner, Jodie Fox.
The higher the height, the greater the fall - or so they say. Jodie Fox has seen the business world from a dizzying height. Her footwear empire Shoes Of Prey – a fashion technology empire which customised every single pair of shoes that was delivered - raised over $35 million Australian dollars in venture capital. At their peak they had over 220 employees, and their store in Australian department store David Jones did double its forecasted revenue in the first 12 months, becoming the highest earner per square meter on the shoe floor. It was a runaway success. But in August 2018, the founders closed company after sales-growth didn’t match the pace needed for further investment. Jodie went on to write a brilliant book entitled Reboot: Probably More Than You Ever Wanted to Know about Starting a Global Business. She shared vulnerably and openly about her successes and her failures - and in this conversation, we ask all the nitty gritty questions about how the self-confessed ‘alpha girl’ has tackled identity, purpose, and her newest role - motherhood. Whether you’re interested in building a business, in leadership styles, in the lows and whys of moving internationally, or you’re just looking for a hell of a story, strap in for this raw and honest ride as we talk shoes, shame, and oversharing. This is Part 2 of Mia Freedman’s chat with Jodie Fox about her business Shoes of Prey. You can find Part 1 in the Lady Startup Stories feed. Jodie Fox described August 28, 2018 as “one of the most horrific days of my life”. It was the day her multi-million dollar business, Shoes of Prey, officially collapsed. Jodie’s co-founders - her ex husband and his best mate - were no longer part of the day to day running of the business and on the day the call was made to pull the pin, Jodie was at the company’s factory in China. In this conversation, Jodie tells Mia exactly how that day unfolded, and the unexpected changes that have happened in Jodie’s life since. Jodie Fox founded Shoes of Prey in 2008 with her husband and his friend. The business allowed women to design their own shoes online and have them shipped anywhere in the world. They broke even at two months, hit multi-million dollar revenues in under two years, and raised tens of millions of dollars in funding from top-tier investors. But in 2018, the business failed. In part one of this conversation, Jodie tells Mia Freedman about how she built a ‘Purple Cow’ into her business, the smart way she pitched to investors and what she did when it all started to go downhill. Failure is a topic few entrepreneurs are willing to talk about but many need to hear about. You won't find anyone in the startup ecosystem who talks as openly and eloquently about failure as Jodie Fox. Jodie is an exceptional founder who built an incredible business in Shoes of Prey, the former cult-fashion startup which allowed women to customise their own shoes. A banking and finance lawyer by trade and a dedicated creative, Shoes of Prey was a perfect nexus of the corporate and creative worlds for Jodie.Shoes of Prey was considered a global leader and innovator in mass-customisation and on-demand manufacturing. A vertically integrated business that raised over US$27 million in funding, and with millions of shoes designed, Shoes of Prey changed the way the retail industry thought about product and manufacturing. This popular Aussie startup was founded in 2009 with the vision that personalisation and customisation were the future of retail. Unfortunately, after 10 years of being in business, Shoes of Prey went into liquidation early 2019.In this episode, Jodie talks us through the highs and lows of her journey with poise and vulnerability, specifically shedding light on the importance of mental health for entrepreneurs. She also discusses her new book, "Reboot: Probably More Than You Ever Wanted to Know about Starting a Global Business", which was released in November. You don't want to miss this insightful, powerful pod episode.

Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand. This week he talks to Jodie Fox, co-founder of Shoes of Prey. For many years this week's podcast guest executed every move from the big start-up scale-up playbook. She and her co-founders came up with an innovative new idea, and worked out how to do something that had never been accomplished before - they created the technology and systems to allow people to customise shoes, in pretty much anyway you could imagine, and have a one of a kind shoe made and sent to you within about two weeks. They were profitable from very early on, having found a customer that loved the ability to make their dream shoe. They then attracted top tier investors and partnered with some of the world's top retailers, like Nordstrom, to grow from a niche product to mass market. They followed every sensible step -customer research, pilots, testing and built the infrastructure to make the leap to the mass-market, attracting $AU35m of funding, winning awards and making something completely new happen. And then...... then it didn't work as they hoped. Maybe it was too much choice to offer, but the mass market visited and didn't buy. They tried to pivot but couldn't make the economies of scale work - and decided to pull the plug. It is a different kind of chat this week - about when success is closing when the signals tell you, and sharing what is hard learnt. To that end our guest, co-founder of Shoes of Prey, Jodie Fox, is with us at the link below to talk about her journey and new book to share her story, Reboot: Probably More Than You Ever Wanted to Know about Starting a Global Business See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our guest this week has been on an incredible journey in the past decade - building an iconic online retail empire to global heights and then having no choice but to close it all down last year. We’re talking about Shoes of Prey co-founder, Jodie Fox. The trailblazing Shoes of Prey became a global start-up and fashion darling during its nine years in business - offering shoes that its customers could personally design and customise online. It was a truly innovative concept. Big name VC firms thought so too, and Jodie and her two male co-founders raised around $30 million over the life of the business before coming to the heart-wrenching decision to cease trading in August last year. The problem? Despite a stunning launch years earlier, they simply couldn’t get the scale to make the business sustainable in the long term. Jodie was the Chief Creative Officer and public face of Shoes of Prey, so coming to terms with having to shut down the business, and its global offices, has been particularly confronting for her in the past year having spent the past ten years living and breathing the brand. In this episode you’ll learn : How and why Jodie went from being a risk averse young lawyer to a start-up co-founder What it was like to be married and then divorced to one of her co-founders whilst still having to work in the business together The three key lessons she’s taken away from the high profile failure of their venture And, how vulnerable she feels sharing so much of her personal story in her new book. This is Jodie’s first podcast interview since Shoes of Prey was shut down and it comes as she’s launching her book about the incredible journey she’s been on: ‘Reboot - More Than You Ever Probably Wanted to Know About Starting a Global Business’. We loved this discussion and Jodie’s generosity in sharing what she’s learnt. Be sure not to miss this one and be among the first to hear her fascinating stories. For the latest episode of TheCurrent Innovators, Liz Bacelar chatted to Jodie Fox, co-founder and creative director of online custom-made shoe platform Shoes of Prey, about the company's eight-year evolution and how they plan on changing the way women buy and wear shoes. For Fox, the brand's success in offering customized shoes at on-demand speed, lies in owning the whole manufacturing process, which is where a lot of other similar companies fell short during the customization boom in 2010, she says. In its early stages, selling the idea of building a factory that would do one shoe at a time was met with a lot of negativity. The company now employs 200 people, however, most of which are based out of their own factory in China, and can have a pair of shoes in the customer's hands in under two weeks. The importance of creating a company anchored in technology means that as fashion evolves and becomes more embedded with tech, Shoes of Prey is at the perfect standing, Fox explains. "One of the things we as a brand are really lucky not to have is legacy (...) Traditionally fashion is a very creative environment and I do believe that there is that desire to be innovative, but the way we get those ideas into market is still very broken. And that's one of the key places that technology can power to simply be fashion," she says, stating that fashion and technology shouldn't be mutually exclusively as they can both leverage one another. As a consumer, Shoes of Prey offers over 10 trillion combinations of a shoe's design, which include changing heels, silhouette and colour. Although the company began by offering a blank canvas, it soon realized the importance of striking the balance of giving consumers choice, but not overwhelming them. For this process, the input of a team of designers has been crucial in creating a controlled yet flexible shopping experience. The platform also enables shoppers who once considered customization cost or time-prohibitive to see it as a tangible choice, particularly for those who fall outside the standard shoe sizing sold across the West, a group which Fox states 77% of women are part of. For the founder, it is surprising that shoe sizing has remained untouched for so long, which means consumers have become accustomed to the fact that wearing certain shoes – such as heels – won't always be comfortable. Fox, who alongside her two other co-founders has raised 30.6 million for Shoes of Prey since launching in 2009, says success has come from leveraging a simple rule of innovation: by being an industry outsider (in her case, with a background in law) she was able to find a common problem, and create an unbiased solution for it. "One of the reasons why Shoes of Prey managed to make a difference is probably naivety, and not being indoctrinated in the expertise of manufacturing in the industry," she says. "You can't let expertise get in the way of an idea."

Jodie Fox loves her shoes. But unlike your average shoe lover, Fox was able to turn that love first into a living room-based passion project, and then a multimillion-dollar online business. She's the co-founder and CEO of Shoes of Prey, a popular online store that allows customers to design and customize their own shoes. Shoes of Prey recently raised $25 million in funding as part of its Series B round, and while that's impressive enough on its own, Fox managed to validate, launch, and break even on her very first business within two months. That's mind-bogglingly fast, even by startup standards. The former lawyer also skilfully scaled her business with a powerful mix of influencer marketing and deals with wholesale giants like Nordstrom, to the point that over 5 million shoes have been designed on the platform. Not bad for a first-time entrepreneur. "I think a founder's job when you start a business is just to do everything that you haven't hired anyone to do just yet," Fox says. Together with her co-founders, Fox followed her passion, validated her idea, built her first online store, and from there the wins kept on coming. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to interview her and receive step-by-step instructions on how this first-time entrepreneur managed to build herself a worldwide business with million of customers at lightning-fast speeds. In this episode you'll learn: Why you need to tap into the power of micro-influencers to quickly grow your brand How to ink deals with the top brands in your niche Exactly when to look for funding, and when to keep on bootstrapping How to conceive, validate, and launch your idea in as fast as two months What holds most online businesses back from being successful, and how to overcome them & so much more!

What if I told you there's a company that has delivered millions of distinct products around the world? And it's only seven years old? Welcome to world of mass customization! That company is Shoes of Prey, and Chief Creative Officer and co-founder Jodie Fox tells us what it means to deliver exactly what the customer wants, where they want it. Their model? “Our customers pay upfront for exactly what they want and pay up-front for that, and we make it.” Sounds like a dream, but it raises some interesting questions, like how this can be cost-effective; what tools customers need to design and visualize their custom merchandise; how to use big data to identify trends and understand the individual consumer better; and how to craft a user experience to minimize the risk of returns. What is the role of a Chief Creative Officer, anyway, when the customer is designing the products? We talk about their recent move from Sydney to Los Angeles in their quest to go global, and she gives us a sneak peek into the shoe trends of the upcoming year. She shares some futuristic predictions about how technology from 3D printing to blockchain and artificial intelligence might impact manufacturing. And she teaches Z how to walk in 4” heels!
