In today's episode Jason Pereira talks to his friend and colleague John DeGoey. Together they are going to discuss “What to look for when hiring financial advisor? John is a well-known pundit in the industry and author of several books, specifically - The Professional Financial Advisor. Episode Highlights:00.56: John has been an advisor for 28 years. He has written a couple of books and articles. He is a proponent of professional, transparent financial advice in a way that is consumer centric. 1.46: Jason asks, “Consumers looking to hire an advisor, what should be their first steps? What they should be doing and how that can go in and out.“2.01: John says, the first thing that consumers should think about hiring an advisor is what your expectations are from that advisor and find an advisor who works in your snack bracket with the specialization that might respond to whatever specific concerns you have. 3.18: Many people tell you that they deal with business owners or executives or people with money. Jason recommends you go further and ask questions about specific services that are tailored to those people. Ask the advisors to prove it by telling you what you do for me that is different than others.3.44: John says, you can't ask questions if you don't know what questions you should be asking. 4.19: Jason always recommends, “Don't just take your friend's word for it because your friend could be happy with someone terrible.” 4.52: John says, if the advisor is only giving product recommendations without thinking about strategy or fit or planning and specifically if those recommendations are being made without doing anything to really determine what your circumstances are in the first place, then people might assume, well, this is a person who is just fresh out of university and starting out and needs to do some work with budgeting.6.39: The conversation or the desire for advice is driven typically by the perceived need around a product or solution. 7.26: Many people when the penny drops, and they realize they need something. They rush out to find someone to help them deal with that one thing they have determined they need help with.9.27: John suggests, “Look for a person who when start asking you questions, asked to follow up questions first derivative questions that the next question is not on their pre-existing list of questions to ask but close directly out of the answer that you gave and because you said something that triggered something in their mind, they then went back to you and said so tell me more about this to make sure that they are understanding the situation and determining whether or not you might need more help with that thing.” 10.18: Jason inquires, “Can you speak to the kind of credentials individuals should be looking for when they go and seek advice?” 10.23: John says, “The first thing that I would say is you might want to look at licensure. About 85 or 90% of the people who give advice are not licensed to sell individual stocks and bonds. They only have a mutual fund license and or a mutual fund insurance license.” 11.59: Everyone has to be fiduciary, but if you are working with a portfolio manager, all portfolio managers are also fiduciary by virtue of being a portfolio manager are also fiduciary and that's one thing that provides comfort to many people.12.49: Jason asks, “When it comes time to ask what is all costs? Where are the red flags? Or what should people expect?” 15.02: John says Industry has not been consumer friendly because there are certain lobby groups within the industry. The total cost for the client is the sum of the product, the advice and those additional transaction charges in custody fees. 16.32: If an advisor is telling you verbally and they don't have like a fee schedule spelled out in front of you then it's another issue here that a lot of people don't think about it.17.11: Jason points out that, “You can't be assured that you are getting as good a deal as everybody else that this person is dealing with and that's something if you don't have someone who's got a clearly defined fee schedule that they can lay out in front of you, you are a danger to that.” 20.15: The saying that we all have heard that price is what you pay value is what you get, says John21.22: If you are getting good advice and paying for it and but you are also using expensive products and paying for that and those products are not adding value, then the sum total of the value add or subtract is going to be convoluted because it will take more than one factor into it. 23.33: We don't know how good a job we can do for someone until we actually start doing the plan and that's the reality of the real estate industry, says Jason.26.25: John says, a lot of implementation revolves around trade-offs, because there is only one course of action and that is fine. But almost always you have to decide about whether we will travel less or work longer, but we don't retire early and still travel as much as we wanted to.29.49: As per Jason another red flag that comes up quite often is the telling – “You need to do something with your investments before they even understand you.” 30.53: Jason says, it is really easy to score a bullseye when you paint the circle around the arrow wherever it landed. But the reality is that short of being able to prove they would do that, those comparisons are nonsense, and no one should ever take him to credibility with them. 33.09: There is a book that came out about two months ago called noise. The concept of noise is one of the main concepts something called decision hygiene, which is basically being clear, inconsistent and purposeful in your decision making. 33.25: If you are going to interview multiple candidates for the job of being your advisor, it might be worthwhile to at the outset at the beginning of the process before you interview any of them. Think deeply about what you hope to accomplish, think about the questions that you heard us talk about, write them down, and make sure that you asked all the candidates you are interviewing the same questions so that you can compare them. 36.15: If the client wants a comprehensive service and all you care about is investing their money in mutual funds, that is a relationship doomed to failure.3 Key Points:Find an advisor who will step back and encourage you to do a holistic assessment of your actual needs so that the response you're given can be as fulsome as necessary. There are multiple levels of fees, and if the advisor is not clear about the multiple levels of fees, then there is a concern. What you should ask is a breakdown in writing. This should not be a surprise if the advisor doesn't have an answer ready for you and in writing right there because it's a basic question.If you have a question about, what kind of return should I expect? You should speak to multiple advisors. In most instances it's a reverse indicator, and the advisor who sets the expectation the lowest is likely the most credible. Tweetable Quotes:“Don't presume and don't work with advisors that are quick to person.” - John “If the client wants to negotiate, that would be a red flag for the advisor, because the client wants someone who is less than professional and more sales.” – John“The media is largely beating up on fees because cost is a simple story to tell people that gets people enraged and gets clicks. Dr. Osler talks about how his chair designs help alleviate the problems caused by sitting. He also discusses his plans for educating a new generation on active sitting while supporting an ageing population with back pain.      EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Dr. Osler’s background includes being an academic trauma surgeon, as well as a research epidemiologist with more than 300 peer-reviewed publications.  He believes Western medicine profoundly doesn’t understand back pain.  Our health challenge is based on the fact we often slump in our chairs for eight hours. As a result, our biochemistry suffers greatly.   Dr. Osler believes sitting is a catastrophe and everything is better when we’re moving.  QOR360 is profoundly influencing public health through it’s chair designs requiring movement.  Designs are based on research studying the effects of sitting and the absence of physical activities. To address scalability, QOR360 utilizes off-the-shelf office chair components. They  source materials and manage assembly in Vermont. The company’s target audience includes people who are into body mechanics and posture, and people with back pain.   The company is in the business of chairs to keep people moving and to change the way we sit.  Dr. Osler is partnering with an entrepreneur on his patent process. He highly values flexibility in his schedule so that he can make time for friends and family.Jon is a Police Officer and he gained a lot of personal satisfaction from that position. Pelvic floor, respiratory diaphragm, deepest abdominal muscle, and the transverse abdominis in your back. • Your deep core system is what stabilizes your movement. • Your body is going to do what it needs to do to function but if we aren't doing it right, other parts of our body will take over. This can cause pain, weakness and more. • Your muscles in your pelvic floor form the shape of a hammock. • There are 3 layers of muscles to your pelvic floor. • The Levator Ani muscle is your 3rd layer of pelvic floor muscles. It consists of your bladder, your uterus, and lower rectum. • The exam to determine where you need help in your pelvic floor muscles consists of an internal and external exam. • Men can have pelvic floor muscle weakness too. • An exercise that can be used to strengthen those muscles would be to, tighten the outside of your vagina or penis like you are lifting a blueberry or tightening up. • You can determine your pelvic floor strength and weaknesses by your breathing and diaphragm. • The key to pelvic floor therapy is to generate movement from the core. • By having pelvic therapy, you can rebalance your digestive system because it removes pressure in your diaphragm. • Always make sure to chew your food. • Remember, “If you feel something, say something” • Post-partum and involuntary contraction of the floor muscles can cause painful sex. • If you have painful sex, it can cause issues with your quality of life, relationships, and emotional health. • There are things you can use during and after menopause to eliminate painful sex. • Word of advice from Susan, breathing is everything. During Episode 106 of the HyperFast Agent Podcast, Ryan Serhant, New York Billion Dollar Real Estate Broker, Author, and television personality delivers an incredible keynote speech at the HyperFast Sales Summit on the power of thinking like a salesperson and creating a resolution for the next decade.  Episode Highlights:  10 years ago, Ryan Serhant was a hand model, trying to survive in New York City. Ryan was born in Texas, and moved 8 times before he hit 4th grade.  Ryan discovered theater was the only thing he was good at, despite being forced to try numerous different classes and sports by his parents. Ryan enjoyed performing in the theater because it gave him the opportunity to be someone else. He didn't like who he really was, so the ability to put on the costume of another person, was really appealing. Ryan details his early days of living on his own in New York City. Ryan's dad taught him the foundation of hustle; to work harder than anyone else, no matter what it is. Ryan's friend introduced him to real estate by comparing it to theater. He got his real estate license the day the Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. His first year in real estate was trial-by-fire. His first clients were people he met on the street and local businesses. Ryan emphasizes forgetting about your new year resolution, focus on your decade resolution.  Find your wall. Write it down and remember it every single morning. Ryan's wall was not being able to afford food at a local grocery store. He left the store embarrassed and crying, and has vowed to never be in that situation again. Ryan recounts his first sale, and the life-long lessons learned from that transaction. In New York City, negotiations between agents typically happen through text, or verbally over the phone. Agents then hand off the legal negotiations to the lawyers representing each side. Ryan learned so much that impacted his career, while waiting months for his first sale transaction to close.  Ryan created his 3 F's: Follow-up, follow-through, and follow-back. Follow-up is actually following up on what you tell people you're going to do. Follow-through is actually doing the things you said you're going to do. The only one who's stopping you from being more successful, is you. Follow-back is going back and re-engaging with all the people you've met in your life. Once the Million Dollar Listing aired, Ryan figured his phone would be ringing off the hook from clients looking to list or buy with him. It didn't. However, he did get a big response from other real estate agents. He uses discipline, hustle, and the 3 F's, to leverage time and create success. Being a realtor, or being in real estate, your job is meeting new people. Look at your business over the past year, and look at where those people came from. Return to that source, and meet more people. Don't look a year ahead. Look a decade ahead. Write down your plan for the next 10 years, by focusing on the decisions you're going to make. 3 Key Points: Find your wall. Write it down, remember it, and allow it to motivate you. Writing is the first act of transforming the invisible to the visible. If you want to be super productive, you must decide whether something is important or not important. Then ask if that thing is urgent or not urgent. Spend your time doing things that are urgent and planning for things that are not urgent.  Forget about the things that are not urgent or important. Delegate or automate things that are urgent but not important. Spend 5-10 minutes at the beginning and end of each day setting intentions and reflecting. Decide the top three things you'd like to do that day and tackle those early. At the end of the day take inventory and set intentions for the next day. Brandilyn Tebo is an acclaimed transformational coach, writer and speaker. Once a type-A perfectionist who struggled with anorexia, she knows firsthand how destructive attachment to external validation can be. Through years of inner work and deep meditation, coach trainings, and the study of eastern and western transformational philosophies, she learned how amazing life can be once you let go of fear, limiting beliefs and false identification with achievements. She has traveled the world to teach empowering workshops in high schools, prisons, Fortune 500 companies and colleges. Perhaps we’re in a job that we don’t actually feel passionate about, but we excel at and are validated day-in, day-out. This validation fuels our perception of ourselves. We feel needed, important; perhaps, even loved because of the things that we do. Today’s guest, Brandilyn Tebo began as a model who found herself chasing the validation of others to the point she was not even present in life. She decided to take a turn, find help for the damage she caused her body and mind, and became a transformational coach. Today’s episode guest is Brandilyn Tebo Brandilyn is a transformational coach and she hosts workshops and retreats Brandilyn is also writer and is in the process of writing a journal Brandilyn approaches transformation in different ways Prior to being a transformational coach, Brandilyn was constantly doing things just to feel better about herself It manifested on Brandilyn’s previous job as a model where she became anorexic One day, Brandilyn realized that she wasn’t present in life and was only thinking of other people’s perception of her Brandilyn had therapy for her eating disorder and her therapist encouraged her to explore spirituality Brandilyn started coaching to share what she’s learned and wanted to help in changing people’s lives; she was doing it for free for a while Brandilyn realized that coaching and transforming lives was what she wanted to do Brandilyn left the corporate world to become an entrepreneur Brandilyn developed her program and workshops and started coaching online Brandilyn was at a point where she doesn’t want to go back to school because she was an overachiever Brandilyn’s mission is to help people find their “should” Brandilyn now has a client who’s doing something because of the validation she gets from it The client is doing really good at her job The client’s dream is actually to make a difference in someone’s life The client turned down her promotion, quit her job and went to just trusting what she really wanted What’s in front of us now constrains us from what we really want Brandilyn told her client that her understanding of herself will change drastically if she turns down the promotion Brandilyn and her client talked about the possibilities for her client now that she quit her job In just 4 days, the client received an offer of a job that she really wanted Don’t be afraid if your coach tells you to quit your job We are scared to admit that we’re afraid of letting go of something that is our sense of security When we’re attached to what we think we’re supposed to be or do; we think that if we let go of that, we lose love The fear keeps us in a prison When we identify ourselves to the title, the money and other things, we think that these are the reasons why people love us When we let go of that identity that we think we should have, we realize that those aren’t the reasons why we are loved People love us not because of what we have The cure to trick the ego is to surrender When we stop making choices out of fear, we get connected with our true inspiration “You can’t hate yourself for having a life that you love” We stay upset because we think that being upset is productive The most productive thing in the world is to live from your inspirations We have to deprogram fear 99% of the fear that we have isn’t actually happening There are people who are in dire survival situations where vigilance and fear is appropriate However, the listeners don’t live in those kinds of circumstances Trusting the body and trusting life Giovanna doesn’t trust her body to do what it is supposed to do to get healthy Giovanna’s has had back issues for a year now We are under the illusion that we can control things It is pointless to try to be in control We constantly just have to surrender Trust that you’re alive and the forces are working within your favor The more we resist, the more we’re giving away our power to circumstances We resist reality when we shouldn’t When we accept what is, it opens up space for creativity to come in Brandilyn would write to herself Why this is happening to me instead of why this is happening for me The little shift that happens doesn’t have to have a reason “You don’t have to know why” Trust that you’re in a place because you are supposed to be there The privilege gift is when we hang onto struggle and hardships as a weird form of empathy Victim consciousness is when you become a victim of what’s happening to you We would sometimes feel guilty when things aren’t going well with our family We think that insecurities, doubts and complaints are ways to connect with people We shift our focus to others The paradox of caring for others is caring for ourselves When we hyper obsess with our own imperfections, we’re transmitting that and it isn’t helping You have to be real with your feelings Brandilyn has “the word vomit” exercise where people can complain We just need to let out our complaints Giovanna likes that Brandilyn asks permission from the person she wants to complain to You should be responsible for the energy you bring into the room Have fun with complaining and let the other person let it out to if he wants to The spiritual bypass There are ways of complaining and venting in a healthy way We can let perfectionism run through everything Brandilyn was doing a campaign Brandilyn used to have rashes on her head whenever she was stressed in the corporate world Brandilyn’s head suddenly got itchy and she knew there was something that she needed to let out Brandilyn actually had lice Giovanna has also done a spiritual bypass Part of the reality is our physical body We sometimes just take ourselves too seriously “You don’t need to just sit there and accept everything” Give yourself the freedom to choose We don’t need to be justified in following our heart Visit Brandilyn’s website Check out She Rises website! 3 Key Points: Find your “should”;
