Making a Scene Presents an Interview with The Gated Community The Gated Community is a Minneapolis-based country and bluegrass band with a mission and a pulse. Formed in 2006 by South Asian-American Yale graduate, political activist, and University of Minnesota music theory professor Sumanth Gopinath, the band has been described as “Americana to fight fascism” (Adobe & Teardrops)—a line that captures both their sound and their purpose. They blend folk, bluegrass, and country traditions with a raw rock edge, pairing tight harmonies and roots instrumentation with lyrics that confront the world as it is, not as we wish it were. http://www.makingascene.org

Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/beherenow and get on your way to being your best self.In this episode, Frank Ostaseski holds a session on:How love enables us to do things we never imagined possibleExperiencing a love without limitations Love as the background of all experiences and the very essence of our beingMaking space for pain so that it can moveHow love aligns us with the true purpose of our lifeDifferentiating between love and attachment Soul friends who know how to be with us in times of grief and sufferingDeveloping a deep trust in an intelligence greater than our ownLiving from the vantage point of boundless love “When the veils between the worlds get very thin, like birth and death, love shows itself very easily. It allows us sometimes to do things we never thought were possible.” –Frank OstaseskiAbout Frank Ostaseski:Frank Ostaseski, an internationally respected Buddhist teacher and pioneer in end-of-life care, has accompanied over 1,000 people through their dying process. Acclaimed author of The Five Invitations, Frank co-founded the first Buddhist hospice in America—The Zen Hospice Project. In 2005, he founded the Metta Institute, through which he has trained countless clinicians and caregivers, building a national network of educators, advocates, and guides for those facing a life-threatening illness.“Is there a greater gift we can give to ourselves or someone else than to receive them as is? Love is not a gated community. Every part of ourselves is welcome. ‘No part left out', we say in zen. This is the receptive function of love. Once we know this treasure, there is no point in keeping it to ourselves. The ground of love is limitless. We don't have to be stingy about it. We don't have to think of love as a commodity that we trade with others. There is an endless supply of love, so we can endlessly give it away.” –Frank OstaseskiSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Aussie icon John Safran dropped by to chat about his wild new book, Squat: A Week Squatting at Kanye's Mansion. He dove into his investigative antics, where he hilariously broke into Kanye's abandoned LA mansion to reflect on the rapper's spiraling controversies and antisemitic remarks. Safran didn't hold back as he exclusively spilled all the juicy details of how he cracked the gated community (like a true stealth pro). Egal, Basti hört sowieso nur „Pumped Up Kicks“ in Dauerschleife. Was wollen uns die Künstler hiermit sagen?

An seinem Gartentor entdeckt anredo mysteriöse Botschaften. Wer steckt dahinter?

Celebrate Russell's birthday and delve into a heartfelt discussion that weaves together the threads of Indian and North American folk music traditions. Through Sumanth's personal narrative, we explore how the echoes of our upbringing resonate in the music we love, and how shared experiences and diverse backgrounds create a rich tapestry of cultural identity.   Peel back the layers of music theory's evolution with us, as we engage with the compelling transformation from academic pursuits to the frontlines of labor union activism. Sumanth's anecdotes reveal the intimate connections between the professionalization of music theory, the political economy that shapes the discipline, and the influence of collective action in shaping both academia and society. Together, we shine a spotlight on the need for music education to embrace a broader spectrum of cultural narratives, enriching our understanding of music's role in our lives.   Join us for a profound conversation that tackles the delicate balance between cultural appreciation and appropriation. We navigate the complex terrain of global influences on personal expression, examining how our intentions, critiques, and relationships inform the way we engage with the world's diverse musical heritage. In an increasingly interconnected community, we emphasize the importance of approaching cultural exchanges with mindfulness and respect, ensuring that our artistic expressions contribute to a more understanding and harmonious world.   About Sumanth: Sumanth Gopinath is Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Minnesota TwinCities.
