We take a look back at our chat with comedy legend John Safran, as he asks when is a cigarette not a cigarette? John Safran tells Charles and Dom about his latest book ‘Puff Piece', which looks at the clever language and new products that the cigarette-making behemoth Philip Morris is adopting to try and retain its profits while also convincing its global audience of smokers to give up their ciggies – but potentially replace them with another product where instead of smoking tobacco, you… heat it. In typical fashion, the story's funny, circuitous and thought-provoking – and involves multiple visits to Father Bob. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

John Safran is an author and satirist who recently wrote the book 'Puff Piece, How Phillip Morris Set Vaping Alight and Burned Down the English Language'. He chats to Tony about a corporate message from Phillip Morris CEO Jacek Olczak, which is focused on 'unsmoking the world', 'ending the problem of smoking' and Phillip Morris ambitions to become smoke free. John explains the contradictions at play here, the pressures on PMI from vaping and governments, and how tricky use of language, and a tobacco heating device called the IQOS, are potentially Phillip Morris' ticket to salvation. 'Phillip Morris always wins' is a phrase in Safran's book and he uses it again here. A funny and revealing chat, about corporate obfuscation and skulduggery. Buy Puff Piece here. While everyone is thinking about the COVID-19 pandemic, writer, filmmaker John Safran is checking up on the world’s largest cigarette company, Philip Morris. In September 2018, on the same day as World No-Tobacco Day, Philip Morris announced it wants to “unsmoke” the world. In his latest book, Puff Piece – How Philip Morris Set Vaping Alight (and burned down the English language), John Safran investigates how the tobacco company bend and shape-shift language to convince the world they’re helping people give up smoking through genius marketing. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Follow Mark Bouris on Instagram, LinkedIn & YouTube. The danger of smoking has become far more evident around the world in recent years - though did you realise smoking wasn't banned in any workplace or indoor venue in Australia until the early 1990s? In more recent years, the European Parliament has banned traditional menthol cigarettes, but alternatives such as e-cigarettes and vaping have grown in popularity. But here's a statistic for you: of the 57 million people who die around the world each year, 8 million are due to Big Tobacco. That's 14 per cent. Clearly, it's still a problem.Joining this episode is writer and filmmaker John Safran. His latest book, Puff Piece, investigates how makers of Marlboro - Philip Morris - have redefined themselves as the future of cigarettes is up in the air. Bards Logic discusses Public broadcasting Service (PBS) airing of "After Tiller", a documentary on doctors whom perform later term abortion. Letter from Bill Marshall: "This week I was made aware of PBS's plans to air a program glorifying late term abortion and the doctors that perform them entitled "After Tiller". The program seems to paint a picture of how heroic these doctors are because of the moral dilemma they personally encounter in these cases. If these doctors were truly faithful to the oath they take then there would be no dilemma. To take the life of an innocent unborn child is wrong according to God and what He has revealed to us. It is not up to them or anyone else to decide such a thing. If these doctors, like Dr. Tiller, and the federal government would listen to the wisdom of God, they would have no moral dilemmas. This program will air locally on September 6.
