When my husband, Sid, was 60, he fell in a parking lot. He didn't think much of it, but over the next few months his legs weakened and he fell more often. We visited neurologists, orthopedists and internists who gave him MRIs, CT scans, spinal taps and psych tests. There was vague talk of "softening of the brain tissue at the cerebellum." No one seemed to have answers until Sid was diagnosed with a progressive neurological disease, spino cerebella ataxia. My able-bodied husband went from a cane to a walker to a wheelchair. He lost control of his bladder and bowel. He developed dysphasia; his food had to be pulverized and liquids had to be thickened. He had difficulty catching his breath. His arms atrophied. Although there was no treatment and no cure, his incredible intellect and sense of humor never wavered. He did not want to die. He had two grandchildren whom he adored and wanted to dance at their weddings. But after seven years of losing ground, Sid told me he had enough. He asked for my help to kill himself. I refused - the hardest decision of my life, and one that haunts me still. I extended his intolerable existence. Sid decided that he would stop eating and drinking. As his body slowly shut down, he developed terminal agitation and his extraordinary hospice nurse had to lie on top of him because no amount of Haldol could control his outbursts. My husband spent his adult life in recovery from alcoholism, anxiety and depression. He had joked that he wanted to know when he had three months to live so he could have some Johnny Walker Blue. His best friend, Mike, brought over a bottle, but Sid declined. He said he was proud of three things in his life: his daughter, his marriage and his 36 years of sobriety. It took 12 days for my husband to die. He left on May 5, 2014. Because of Sid's unnecessary suffering - and the effect that suffering had on our family, a factor that is often overlooked - I advocate what has become known as medical aid in dying. Through that work, I met Laura Kelly, a Mount Kisco resident whose father, Larry, dying of colon cancer in 2015, asked for help just as Sid had. His death, like Sid's, was unnecessarily traumatic. The Medical Aid in Dying Act (A995/S2445) was first introduced in the New York Legislature in 2015. It would allow terminally ill, mentally capable adults with a prognosis of six months or less the option to obtain prescription medication they could decide to take to die peacefully if their suffering becomes unbearable. Although there are similar laws in place in 10 states, including New Jersey, the bill has never come up for a vote in Albany. We are hoping that will change in 2024. Assembly Member Dana Levenberg, whose district includes Philipstown, is a co-sponsor of the bill, but please let Assembly Member Jonathan Jacobson, whose district includes Beacon, and Sen. Rob Rolison, whose district includes the Highlands, know that it deserves their support.

What do these two movies have in common? Where are they different? Join us for a drink and discussion about DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1989) and TRAINING DAY (2001). In honor of the expensive whiskey that Denzel's character drinks in a scene in Training Day, Jerome enjoys some Johnny Walker Blue. Chris went with a nice stout from New Holland Brewing called THE POET as a hat tip to DPS.In the first part of the podcast, the hosts engage in a thorough analysis of the film "Training Day." They begin by providing background information on the movie's director, Antoine Fuqua, and its main actors, Denzel Washington, and Ethan Hawke. The hosts delve into the gritty and intense atmosphere of the story, set in the morally ambiguous world of law enforcement. They discuss the characters of Alonzo Harris and Jake Hoyt, highlighting the complex dynamic between the seasoned, corrupt detective and the idealistic rookie cop. The hosts examine the film's exploration of themes such as power, corruption, and loyalty, as well as its depiction of the dark underbelly of the Los Angeles Police Department. They praise Denzel Washington's exceptional performance, which earned him an Academy Award, and commend the film for its captivating storytelling and gripping action sequences...In spite of the studio snubbing Ethan Hawke AS THE LEAD! In the second part of this episode, they introduce the film "Dead Poets Society" and set the stage by describing the setting of Welton Academy, a prestigious college preparatory school. They highlight the clash between traditional values and the unconventional ideologies of John Keating, the English professor portrayed by Robin Williams. The hosts analyze the opening scene and discuss the school's motto and the expectations placed on the protagonist, Todd, who seeks acceptance within a group. They emphasize the significance of the discovery of the secret club, the Dead Poets Society, as a turning point in the story. The hosts provide insights into the characters of Todd, Neil, and Dalton, representing different facets of Todd's personality - as Todd (Ethan Hawke) IS THE LEAD of the film too!The Wiegand brothers, Jerome & Chris, love movies, and they are fascinated by human nature and the art of great storytelling. John Laurie is the managing director of Scotland's oldest working distillery, Glenturret. His journey with whiskey began in his childhood when his grandfather would often smoke his pipe and enjoy some black bottles of whiskey. When John was in his mid-20s, his father-in-law invited him to attend a whiskey show in Edinburgh. There, he fell in love with whiskey, the stories behind the brands, and the liquid itself. John was particularly impressed with the brand's Glen Rothus and Compass Box and found the way they told their stories particularly captivating.John's early years of disrupting the whiskey industry were marked by experimentation and having fun. Dalwini was John's entry point into single malt drinking and could be purchased for around 40-50 pounds. Johnny Walker Blue was more expensive at 180 pounds. John's father-in-law got him into the whiskey industry and it took some time for him to get to where he is now. The Scottish whiskey industry is not very large, so John has been privileged to have been part of it and knows a lot of people in the industry.
Crowned Heads released a new limited edition cigar late in 2022 to commemorate their move to NASCA for some of their cigar lines. Someone instrumental in this move was Gustavo Cura, who was in charge of Oliva's tobacco farms and interests in Nicaragua, at the time. Gustavo helped Crown Heads in Nicaragua while they were looking at tobaccos and cigar factories for their lines. As a token of appreciation, they gave Gustavo a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue which he cherishes and still has to this day. To commemorate that event, Crowned Heads created the Azul y Oro at NASCA, which Gustavo now leads, using the blue and gold color scheme of the Johnny Walker Blue bottle. On this week's episode Adam is subbed out and the Lawyers are joined by the incredible and legendary Baltimore Criminal Defense Attorney Warren A Brown. FROM HIS BIO: Attorney Warren A. Brown was born into an America that had yet to fully open its reserve of social, economic, educational, and political rights to its African-American citizens; a time when a Black president, Black Miss America, Black heads of corporations, and Black people in any position of power was unimaginable. He was fortunate, however, to be surrounded by a community of honorable, hardworking, and determined people, and thus he never shied from entertaining lofty goals. One such goal was to become a lawyer, not for the money, rather, to fight for the weak and to claim membership in the “most noble profession”. Upon graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1974 and Boston University School of Law in 1977, Warren Brown began to apply his trade with the Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc. (MALS) under, now mayor of Memphis, A. C. Wharton. Returning to his home of Baltimore in 1980, he first worked at the Legal Aid Bureau, then with the Office of the State's Attorney for Baltimore City before settling in at the Federal Public Defender's Office. In 1988, he opened the doors to his own Criminal Defense firm. Since that time, Warren Brown has tried both state and federal cases in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. An accomplished trial attorney, Warren Brown approaches trial work as an art; never leaving anything to chance. Though a successful and accomplished attorney by any standard, Warren Brown remains loyal to the legal reality that, “The truth, poorly represented, will lose”. Lawyers on the Rocks features Jeremy Eldridge, Kurt Nachtman and Adam Crandell. This triumvirate of lawyers will give you their unsolicited opinion on everything legal and illegal, while enjoying a handcrafted cocktail. Today’s guest, Chris Sadlier, has worked in advertising for 25 years. He’s currently Creative Director for a Detroit-based advertising firm, GTB, an affiliate of WPP, one of he largest advertising agencies in the world. He’s worked throughout the country and the world on ad agencies large and small creating collaborating on print, tv and now digital advertising. My instagram feed is exactly like my brain—scattered and broad. It runs from images and reels of idyllic travel destinations with waterfalls and mountains, runners on trails, depictions of van life, to accounts of my friends’ kids being cute between zoom school classes or their pets stealing the show, to artist friends displaying their latest work, to tons of architecture and design articles. In between are advertisements. I have to admit some have hooked me too. I’ve bought healthy snacks from the tropical rain forest, smoothie powders from a nutrition company, workout shorts and sneakers, cleaning products, even these nifty tablets that dissolve into toothpaste. And it’s not just Instagram. My Facebook page has ads too; when I look up certain products I’ve been curious about, the companies follow me onto both my Facebook page and the online pages when I’m reading the New York Times or local news too. It's election season and I’ve been thinking about ads quite a bit lately. I grew up in the 1970’s in a different era of advertising. Advertising was carefully regulated and a place with incredible creativity. Today we are barraged with an unending array of commercials before, during and following programs so that in 30 minutes you get 15 minutes of ads. Social media is so packed with ads that every other post is a an ad for something. That’s the thing about online advertising. It’s less generic and much more tailored, which to me is a bit scary. Especially after the release of two documentaries on Netflix, 2019’s “The Great Hack” and more recently, “The Social Dilemma.” The Great Hack, explains the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal and how millions of data points were collected and specific information was filtered to people’s Facebook feeds to influence both the 2016 US elections and the Brexit in the UK. Even scarier is The Social Dilemma, which details the specific use of advertising and content on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other platforms to keep us hooked and to boldly affect our opinions and our behaviors and to generate millions of ad revenue dollars for the platforms. If you haven’t seen the film I recommend you watch it and watch it with your kids if they are into social media. This discussion is far ranging and I warn you, it gets political at times. While Chris' focus is his main client, Ford, he is an astute observer of trends, both in advertising and culture and he brings it all here. Hope you enjoy today's conversation. Update: Susannah Mushatt Jones passed away on May 12, 2016. She was 116 years and 311 days old. While we sweat it out at spin class in the name of good health, the world’s oldest people drink whiskey, eat bacon, and chug Miller High Lifes with a side of Johnny Walker Blue. At least those are the life secrets we love to hear when we talk about supercentenarians — the exclusive group of people who live to be at least 110 years old. But the science is not that simple, and the lives of these super-survivors are proof. The oldest person recorded in history, a French woman named Jeanne Calment, lived to be 122 years old. Calment, who was born in 1875, lived a fairly easy, stress-free existence, according to Jean-Marie Robine, a French demographer who met her and studied the last years of her life. But the more significant marker of her longevity, he believes, is her direct ancestors who lived, on average, 22 years longer than expected. “So definitely, the gene pool [was] exceptional,” he said. Tom Perls, a physician and researcher who runs the New England Centenarian Study, has studied about 150 supercentenarians. He agrees: living an extremely long life probably has to do more with your DNA than what you drink. “It’s many complicated pathways that feed into what determines your rate of aging and your risk for age related diseases,” Perls said. Today, the oldest known living person in the world is a woman in Brooklyn, New York, and lives a fairly quiet life. At 116 years old, Susannah Mushatt Jones has watched the world go form streetcars to hoverboards; from President William McKinley to President Barack Obama, who is framed in a picture on her wall. Last July, she celebrated her birthday in style with the Brooklyn Nets, local politicians and a gigantic cake topped with (frosting) bacon, a food she eats every day because her doctor says, “why not?” But she doesn’t talk as much as she used to, and spends most of her days with caretakers and family in Brooklyn — waking up to a big plate of grits, eggs and bacon every morning. And she knows better than to credit the bacon for her extraordinary life. “I have no secret,” she said in a video two years ago. “I just live with my family. My family makes me happy.”
