Vance (R-OH) and Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) took part in a Vice-Presidential debate moderated by Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan. In one of the debate's most memorable moments, Walz was asked whether he lied when claiming he was in China during the Tiananmen Square Protests in 1989. Vance and Tim Walz. Rep. Meuser also reacts to the recent House hearing and newly released Senate report into the near assassination of Donald Trump in Butler, PA. He explains Department of Homeland Security Alejandro “Mayorkas is the biggest coward there is on earth” adding he shouldn't just be impeached, he should be imprisoned for his failures at protecting the U.S. border—specifically citing the revelations from a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) report which indicated that there are an estimated 425,000+ convicted criminals who have entered the U.S. unlawfully via the southern border and are not in federal custody. 3:40pm- During Tuesday night's Vice-Presidential debate, Gov. Tim Walz defended his calls to censor speech by proclaiming: “you can't yell fire in a crowded theater.” But as Emma Camp of Reason points out: “It would be nice if everyone on a presidential ticket understood how the First Amendment works, but unfortunately, that seems to be too much to ask of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz…It's a common misconception that shouting ‘fire' in a crowded theatre isn't protected by the First Amendment—a myth that originates from a hypothetical used in Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes' 1919 Supreme Court opinion in Schenck v. United States. Holmes wrote that ‘the most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic.' Not only was this a purely hypothetical example used to explain Holmes' opinion, but the ruling itself was largely overturned 50 years later in Brandenburg v. Vance with inaccurate information. Vance corrected the moderators and also noted that all parties had agreed to not issuing real-time fact checks—CBS quickly responded by muting his microphone. During MSNBC's post-debate coverage, host Nicolle Wallace said that it was “mansplaining” and sexist for Vance to correct the moderators despite the fact they had broken the rules and were using misleading information. 5:10pm- Even Mainstream Media Believes Vance Won Debate. Emma Camp from Reason joins Boyd to discuss what is to come for the academia and political relationship.

With all the talk of Congress' spending bill, we figured we ought to take a look at one of the nation's biggest - and least necessary - expenses. How has the path for urgently needed money become a way for our representatives to pass funding without our approval? Emma Camp joins Boyd.
With the level of polarization we are seeing in politics this year, it's more crucial than ever that Americans are finding our lost middle ground. While leaving the courtroom, Don Jr. said he hopes New Yorkers realize how “destructive” these types of suites are for the city. If Donald Trump loses the case, he could be fined up to $250 million and be prohibited from doing business in New York moving forward. Notably, in 2018, while campaigning to become Attorney General, James vowed to “sue” Trump—providing evidence to the defense's argument that this civil suit is entirely political. 3:40pm- Brian Morris—Attorney at the Institute for Justice—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a disturbing allegation that the state of New Jersey is storing newborn baby DNA. Emma Camp of Reason writes: “In every U.S. state, healthcare workers perform blood tests on newborn infants to check for a range of genetic disorders. However, in New Jersey, the state Department of Health stores infants' blood for up to 23 years without informing parents or seeking their consent. In addition to merely keeping the blood, New Jersey reserves the right to do whatever it wishes with the leftover blood, including selling it or handing it over to the police without a warrant.” These allegations are according to a new lawsuit brought by the Institute for Justice. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss how inflation continues to punish Americans despite the Biden Administration raving about the inflation rate slowing in recent quarters. As Dr. Antoni notes, just because the inflation rate has slowed from its record peaks doesn't mean it isn't still a problem. The U.S. annual inflation rate of 3.7% remains well above the Federal Reserve's targeted 2% rate. 6:05pm- Mark Houck joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his lawsuit against the Biden Administration's Department of Justice. Houck is a pro-life father who was wrongfully charged with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act after protesting outside of an abortion clinic—and he was arrested at his home during an FBI raid that consisted of nearly two-dozen heavily armed agents. Rahimi—a case that will determine whether the right to possess a firearm extends only to citizens considered to be “law abiding.” But what does being a “law abiding” citizen actually entail? Chief Justice John Roberts asked U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar if a traffic violation could disqualify gun ownership. 6:30pm- Jersey Freedom, a political organization, spent tens-of-thousands of dollars backing third party candidates in hopes of diluting the Republican vote in New Jersey's November 7th election. The ad campaign even included endorsements for candidates that have withdrawn from their races. In response, New Jersey Republican Party sued—alleging that the organization has violated campaign finance reporting laws by shielding donor information. Last week, “Superior Court Judge Michael Blee said that Jersey Freedom may make no further expenditures in New Jersey, but acknowledged that with Election Day just five days away, his decision might be too late to matter,” according to a report from David Wildstein of The New Jersey Globe. How many votes did these candidates receive? And what was the impact on the final election results? The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: The Drive at 5: Coca- Cola is releasing a new artificial intelligence created product. The new beverage combines two of Matt's favorite things: Coca-Cola and Artificial Intelligence. Matt explains the thought experiment Roko's Basilisk—which theorizes A.I. will inevitably rule society and it will reward those that aided it's rise to power while punishing those that stand in its way. Rich demands a new producer. Listeners weigh-in: Is the Republican party over-estimating support for Donald Trump within the party? Could voters who supported him in 2020 turn away in 2024? Emma Camp of Reason writes: “In every U.S. state, healthcare workers perform blood tests on newborn infants to check for a range of genetic disorders. However, in New Jersey, the state Department of Health stores infants' blood for up to 23 years without informing parents or seeking their consent. In addition to merely keeping the blood, New Jersey reserves the right to do whatever it wishes with the leftover blood, including selling it or handing it over to the police without a warrant.” These allegations are according to a new lawsuit brought by the Institute for Justice. In March, the NY Times rocked the nation's discourse by publishing an article by Emma Camp, a senior at UVA, about how she experienced college and academic life to be full of too much self-censorship and not enough honest debate. It provided a firestorm of reactions, both supportive and harshly critical and she joins Henry here to break down the points she was getting at, the nuances of how we treat controversial speech in college, the debate around whether cancel culture is a threat to democracy, and how we can be both braver and smarter with what we say in large group settings.
Emma Camp is a 22-year-old senior at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, home of Thomas Jefferson. She calls herself a liberal and has written opinion pieces for the school newspaper, The Cavalier Daily. Back in October of 2020, Ms. Camp had some strong things to say about the First Amendment. She wrote that: "The first amendment does not exist to protect reasonable opinions — it exists to protect the unreasonable, the offensive, and the unpopular." In March of 2022, she moved her opinions to a national platform, the New York Times op-ed page. We asked her to tell us what is behind her statement: "I went to college to learn from my professors and peers. I welcomed an environment that champions intellectual diversity and rigorous disagreement. Instead, my college experience has been defined by strict ideological conformity." This week on Bad Faith, I spoke to Twitter's “character of the week”: Emma Camp— a UVA student who recently published an oped for the New York Times about self-censorship on campus. I pressed her on some of the push back she's been getting online, we talked about our respective college experiences and the ways I felt I had to self censor as a leftist, and attempted to have a good faith to define what types of self-censorship are harmful, and what is just plain being polite. This should be a good one. Can't wait to hear what you all think. Download the Callin app for iOS and Android to listen to this podcast live, call in, and more! Also available at callin.com

This week, Briahna speaks Monday's protagonist, Emma Camp, the UVA senior who wrote a viral New York Times article titled: I Came to College Eager to Debate. I Found Self-Censorship Instead. Brie asks Emma how she distinguishes the "self censorship" which people have opted into for centuries in order in the name of politeness or guarding evolving beliefs until they're more settled, from something more harmful. How does she respond to the criticism that she's been given one of the country's biggest platforms, and yet complains censorship is a problem? Is there truly a cancel culture problem -- even if it's been poorly defined by cancel-culture evangelists? Does the left risk credibility by not acknowledging a sliver of a there there? The Israeli Path to PeaceThere may be hope. Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Israel's prime minister, Naftali Bennett, have been speaking on a regular basis since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24. On March 8, Zelensky personally thanked Bennett for intervening in the conflict and trying to help bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. And if Bennett is not quite Talleyrand, he does appear to have brought diplomatic skills of a very high order to the table. An article in the Jerusalem Post on March 8 describes Bennett as an intermediary who has been “passing messages” between Russia and Ukraine without explicitly identifying himself with one side or the other. The Jerusalem Post story presents Bennett as someone highly knowledgeable about the current state of the conflict and the chances for reconciliation as Russia grows more amenable to the demilitarization of certain parts of Ukraine rather than the entire country, and Ukraine backs down a bit from its insistence on immediate unconditional entry into NATO, a development that would only further stoke Russia's fear and alarm about the encroachment of hostile powers around its borders. An Artist's PlightA February 19 article by Ken Kurson in Fine Art Globe, “Cuban Curator Anamely Ramos Gonzalez Stranded in Miami,” details how staff at Miami International Airport, seemingly at the behest of the Cuban regime, barred Ms. Ramos from getting on an American Airlines flight bound for Cuba. Kurson's piece cites a Miami Herald article stating that typically, when Cuban authorities deny someone entry to the island nation, it happens on the ground in Cuba, and not at a U.S. airport. When asked whether she fears that the attention given her case might put her in danger, Ramos said that, on the contrary, she feels safer in the spotlight.A Terrorist's Death Sentence ReimposedOn March 4, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in a 6-3 ruling to reinstate the death sentence of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving member of the pair of brothers who set off two bombs at the Boston Marathon in 2013, killing three people and injuring hundreds, and then went on a rampage in the course of which they murdered a young MIT police officer and caused still more chaos, injuries, and destruction in the Boston area.An article in National Review published shortly after the ruling details the reasoning put to use by Justice Clarence Thomas, who spoke for the majority when stating that the defendant had received a fair trial before an impartial jury as required under the Sixth Amendment.Defending Academic Freedom, in the New York Times? On March 7 the New York Times published a guest essay by Emma Camp, a senior at the University of Virginia, entitled “I Came to College Eager to Debate. I Found Self-Censorship Instead.” Some students are so terrified of social repercussions—and of getting a lower grade for speaking out in class—that they choose to clam up no matter how wrong they may find the viewpoint of a professor or a fellow student to be.
Tinker v. Des Moines' majority is read by Mary Beth Tinker, one of the students at the center of this case. The concurrences and dissents are read by Emma Camp, a rising senior at the University of Virginia. Legal Question: Whether the wearing of armbands by public school students as a form of symbolic speech is protected by the First Amendment. Action: The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the students' right to wear the armbands, overruling the Eighth Circuit. Mr. Justice Fortas delivered the opinion of the Court, at 00:58 Mr. Justice Stewart, concurring, at 26:49 Mr. Justice White, concurring, at 27:38 Mr. Justice Black, dissenting, at 28:10 Mr. Justice Harlan, dissenting, at 47:42 This opinion's citations have been edited down for ease of listening.
