Join us at https://www.crisisinvesting.com  and https://michaelyon.substack.com/   In this episode, Doug Casey and Michael Yon discuss their major observations this week. Doug kicks off by questioning FEMA's effectiveness, calling it a wasteful agency that fails to provide real emergency relief, while Michael highlights the troubling development of new FEMA camps in North Carolina. The conversation shifts to the increasing uncertainty experienced by global travelers, with both agreeing that even seasoned expatriates struggle to find safe havens in today's world. They delve into the weaponization of drug legalization, especially in places like Thailand and the U.S., warning about its economic and social impact. Doug also critiques the decline of American universities, pointing out how elite institutions have embraced woke ideologies while hoarding massive endowments. On the geopolitical front, Michael discusses the prolonged nature of the Ukraine war and warns that Israel may face existential threats if its conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah escalates. Doug concludes by predicting a significant rise in long-term interest rates, driven by inflation and escalating U.S. debt, which could spell trouble for the economy. Chapters: [00:00:00] Introduction: Matt introduces Doug Casey and Michael Yon, who will discuss three key observations and a prediction. [00:01:00] Doug on FEMA: Doug Casey shares his skepticism about FEMA's role and effectiveness, recounting his experiences post-Hurricane Katrina and calling FEMA a "giant scam." He critiques its ineffectiveness and focus on equity and climate response, stating that the agency should be abolished. [00:08:00] Michael Yon on FEMA Camps: Michael talks about new FEMA camps in North Carolina and compares them to military forward operating bases. He highlights how corporations might benefit from land loss in mineral-rich areas post-disaster. [00:14:00] Uncertainty on Where to Move: Michael and Doug discuss how even the most experienced travelers are unsure of where to settle amidst geopolitical instability. They mention Central America, including El Salvador, but caution against relocating to these areas long-term. [00:22:00] Drug Legalization and Weaponization: Doug and Michael explore the rapid increase in pot shops in Thailand and the U.S. They discuss the broader implications of drug legalization, especially as a weapon of psychological and economic warfare, with Michael mentioning the Chinese involvement in U.S. drug distribution. [00:34:00] Doug on Woke Universities: Doug discusses the impact of left-leaning ideologies in universities, particularly Harvard and other elite institutions. He predicts a decline in enrollment and philanthropic support for these woke institutions in the near future. [00:39:00] Michael on Ukraine and Israel Conflicts: Michael predicts that the Ukraine conflict will last longer and grow bigger, comparing it to the Israeli war with Hamas. He suggests that Israel's survival is at risk as the conflict grows, especially if the U.S. is distracted by internal issues. [00:45:00] Doug's Prediction on Rising Interest Rates: Doug makes a bold prediction about rising interest rates, explaining how inflation and U.S. debt will drive long-term rates higher, leading to potential economic troubles.

America's prohibitionist assault on prescription opioids has left an untold number of chronically ill patients without access to adequate pain control, encouraging them to use illicit substances like heroin or even take their own lives to end their suffering. Some drug policy reformers say the solution to this tragic situation is outright legalization of all drugs. How well would that policy actually work? Let's take a look.

He explains not only the Dutch political situation, but the differences between Dutch populism and populism elsewhere. We talk pros and cons about the American system versus parliamentary systems of government and their ability to get us to the correct political outcome. Then we pivot to cannabis, talking about what the costs of legalization are and correcting the record of what's to come on the road to legalization. We talk trade, healthcare, and more, Veuger explaining to us the different ways legalization could cost the government- and as a result, taxpayers- in the future.  Never miss another AdamSmithWorks update.Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Oregon's controversial Measure 110, designed to decriminalize drug possession, faces intense scrutiny and potential overhaul. Initially hailed as a progressive step towards treating addiction as a public health issue rather than a criminal one, the measure has yielded mixed results. Oregon was the first state to decriminalize small amounts of drugs, aiming to pivot towards addiction recovery rather than incarceration. However, rising overdose deaths and persistent drug-related challenges in cities like Portland have sparked a debate about its effectiveness. The state government, acknowledging the crisis, has declared a 90-day emergency order to address the opioid crisis, particularly fentanyl usage, without additional funding. This situation has led to bipartisan efforts to amend the law, with proposals ranging from tweaking the measure to more drastic changes. The debate reflects a broader struggle to balance humane drug policies with public safety and effective addiction treatment. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

We delve into the life and philosophy of Herb Kay, a man with diverse experiences ranging from being an NSA analyst, a salesman, to serving time in prison. His stint in prison, as result of bad choices during the 2008 real estate collapse, helped him experience people with underprivileged backgrounds and shaped his views on issues such as gun control, mass incarceration, other societal issues and inspired him to conceive 'The 1964 Plan'.Herb claims his political approach transcends party lines and addresses societal problems like the breakup of the nuclear family, the war on drugs and the welfare state. He claims government welfare implementation replaced familial support leading to poverty more permanent than temporary. He decided to call his plan 'The 1964 Plan' to refer to Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society program which Herb claims had good intentions but institutionalized poverty across generations. The plan also talks about the importance of involvement of fathers - traditionally providing discipline and setting boundaries contrasted with the nurturing role mothers play. Kay also emphasizes the impact on child development including lessons like deferred gratification. Herb also believes that women were happier before the sexual revolution. Our discussion burns hot at times as Herb defends his ideas and his plan. In a thought-provoking and candid discussion, Niall engages in a riveting conversation with Karl Deeter, an insightful American-Irish entrepreneur, financial commentator, media pundit, and business journalist. The focal point of this episode is a contentious question that has ignited debates worldwide: Should all drugs be legalized or decriminalized? Karl Deeter brings his well-researched and nuanced perspective to the table, advocating for the decriminalization of drugs as a pragmatic approach to address the deeply entrenched issues surrounding drug use and its associated harms. Drawing parallels with the historical failure of alcohol prohibition, Karl contends that a decriminalization framework would wrest control away from criminal enterprises and create an opportunity for responsible regulation. He emphasizes that education and awareness are key components of this path forward. Niall facilitates an engaging dialogue by opening the lines to a diverse array of callers. The listeners' voices contribute to a vibrant tapestry of opinions, revealing the multifaceted nature of this issue. Supporters of drug decriminalization call for a shift in policy that focuses on harm reduction, ensuring the safety of drug users, and the potential benefits of redirecting resources toward treatment and education. Conversely, opponents express concerns about the potential societal repercussions of widespread drug availability, emphasizing the damaging impact that drugs have had on communities. The episode provides a platform for listeners to delve into the intricate complexities of drug policy, drawing from personal experiences, societal observations, and broader implications. Niall Boylan thoughtfully steers the conversation through varying perspectives, capturing the heart of the debate. As the episode draws to a close, Niall offers insightful reflections on the diverse opinions shared by callers. The War on Drugs has failed. Prohibition does not work. But why? What is the alternative? Should we support drug decriminalization or drug legalization? If so, should all drugs be legal and regulated by the state? Would this be a good idea under capitalism? In this episode of the 1Dime Radio Podcast, I am joined by Mark Edwards from the excellent UltraViolet podcast. Mark is passionate about the topic of harm reduction and drug policy, and has lots of first hand experience with the issue of drug addition through working as a paramedic and as a former user. You can find Mark's Ultraviolet podcast here: https://www.youtube.com/c/UltraVioletPod In the first half of the podcast, Mark and I discuss why prohibition does not work and why it makes things significantly worse. I bring the political economic analysis while Mark brings the first hand personal experience. In the second half of the podcast, we discuss which policy solutions are best for harm reduction such as Drug Decriminalization (as is done in countries like Portugal) and Drug Legalization with government regulation (as is partially done in the Netherlands and with cannabis in countries like Canada and in some US states such as California, Oregon, and Colorado). Lastly, we discuss the potential risks of turning drugs into legal commodities in a capitalist society as well as the problematic psychological appeal of wanting to ban drugs and why Marxist-Leninists tend to be conservative on this debate. We do not condone the use of any illicit substances in this podcast. The 2020 election was notable for a lot of reasons, but one winner really stood out: drug legalization. Five states legalized either medicinal or adult use of marijuana. Oregon and D.C. went even further and decriminalized or legalized hard drugs. And the momentum garnered from these cross-country wins helped push the MORE Act through the House in recent weeks. If enacted, this legislation would end the federal prohibition of marijuana. After decades of fighting to undo the damage done by the War on Drugs, could this be a tipping point? Joining to discuss how America’s war on drugs failed is Cynthia Roseberry, Deputy Director of the ACLU’s National Policy Advocacy Department.

Drug legalization could reduce government costs and raise tax revenues, but opponents worry over health and social ills State governments facing massive fiscal deficits might consider a rather unusual way to alleviate those debts – through the legalization of drugs like marijuana and thereby ending the costly drug war. In a study for the Cato Institute, Jeffrey A. Miron, senior lecturer on economics at Harvard University and a senior fellow at Cato, and Katherine Waldock, professor of economics at New York University, estimate that legalizing drugs would save the government approximately $41.3 billion annually on expenditures related to the enforcement of prohibition. Of those savings, $25.7 billion would accrue to state and local governments, while $15.6 billion would accrue to the federal government. Miron and Waldock estimate that of that $41.3 billion in savings, about $8.7 billion would result from the legalization of marijuana alone and $32.6 billion from the legalization of other drugs, like cocaine and heroin. Just as important, drug legalization would translate into higher tax revenues generated by the sale of these newly-legalized products in the open commercial marketplace. Drug legalization would yield tax revenues of $46.7 billion annually, assuming legal drugs were taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco, they said. Approximately $8.7 billion of this revenue would result from the legalization of marijuana, $32.6 billion from legalization of cocaine and heroin, and $5.5 billion from legalization of all other drugs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/support

The ongoing influx of refugees from war-torn countries as well as the crossing of refugees from the United States into Canada and how to handle them. Broader discussion of immigration policies. Some divergence into crime discussion in the middle but brought back to immigration after a segue. Ken, Jason and John all have different opinions on immigration but manage to say their opinions while maintaining a civil discussion. A good start for our first serious episode where we learn we can disagree with each other but respect the other person's right to their opinion. We will be doing more serious episodes in future. Future topics will include: Legal Age, Misdemeanors and Bylaws, Drug Legalization, Prostitution Legalization, Government policies towards the "indigenous" population, Enforcement and cost of the law, voting rights, political parties.
