Kevin Seconds is a true American punk/hardcore D.I.Y. indie icon. Jason and Kevin met in 1984 when he interviewed 7 Seconds for Leading Edge fanzine backstage at Perkins Palace in Pasadena and they have been friends ever since. The two lived together in Reno for a time and Jason was roadie on the band's 1986 North American tour. This conversation focuses on Kevin's origin story. We learn about the hardscrabble circumstances he and his family experienced after arriving in Reno in the mid 70's, and how the precariousness of his situation helped prime his fascination with the nascent punk movement rumbling underground at the time. We then trace his journey from curious seeker of all things punk to the beginning of 7 Seconds and his central role establishing "anti-youth" Reno, NV as the home of the vital, nationally recognized "Skeeno H.C." hardcore scene. This episode demands a follow-up and we'll be sure to hear from Kevin again in future installments to see where the story goes from here. Thank you for listening! Music: 7 Seconds: "Fight Your Own Fight", "Fuck Your Amerika", "No Authority" TM pod intro by Jason. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jason-traeger/support
Jason was living in Reno with Kevin Seconds in 1986 when Pete's band Verbal Assault pulled into town on their first tour, they have been good friends ever since. Episode 6's freewheeling conversation starts with a description of Pete's 1982 "Quest for MacKaye" bus adventure to Washington D.C. where he met Ian and Alec's mom before ever encountering the brothers. From there we go to him getting punched in the face by Boston hardcore royalty, the shape of Rhode Island punk in that formative period, revelations provided by early MTV and an extended recollection of the two month North American tour they went on together in 1986 ...though Pete swears it was 1987. Topics avoided in this episode: How Pete lost his virginity and The Fink family's rules relating to the consumption of sugary snacks. This is a fun talk. The first of many I hope, with Pete Chramiec. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jason-traeger/support
"Let's Keep It Weird, Shall We?" Back in 1986 a Goth friend of mine from the Bay Area who got me into Bauhaus and The Cure visited his grandparents in Sacramento and he was hanging out in the park smoking cloves and paying guitar when some dude came up to him and said "Where are you from?” My friend said he was from Berkeley and the guy said, “You should go back. There aren’t weirdos like you around here. That guy back in 1986 was way wrong. We weirdos are everywhere. Anton Barbeau is from Sacramento. And he’s a weirdo in the best sense of the word. He is one of the most innovative, idiosyncratic and fascinating musicians on the planet. The singer/songwriter is an inventive lyricist armed with post modern wit, literary smarts and a melodic sensibility that brings to mind the work of XTC and Robyn Hitchcock. He's shared the stage with Weezer, Julian Cope and Mono, he’s collaborated with The Loud Family Kimberly Rew of the Soft Boys, Cake and XTC’s Colin Moulding, he’s produced a bunch of albums including two by Alyson Seconds who’s the wife of 7 Seconds frontman Kevin Seconds and over the course of his career he’s put out over 20 albums including his new double set Manbird. A dazzling collection of soaring pop gems that jangle and roll and lift off into the most peculiar and wonderful of stratospheres, Barbeau has never sounded better. In this conversation we talk about his self-criticism regarding his prolific output, his relationship with fellow 916er Scott Miller (Game Theory/The Loud Family) and why, after all this time, he’s making the best music of his career .

When I was a rebellious teenager in the late 1980’s, I did some stuff of questionable legality. No, let me rephrase that - I did a bunch of stupid stuff and got into a bunch of trouble. Trouble is funny, especially in hindsight? Indeed. Starting with working at my favorite skate shop and managing the shop’s sposored skater team, concluding with a few of the misadventures I had with my friend and pro skater Gator (yes, THAT Gator). This episode could be a road map of what NOT to do if you are looking to avoid run-ins with the law. Call this episode a cautionary tale. I called it fun. This episode also features a brief interview with Kevin Seconds, plus a few 7 Seconds songs from the 80’s as an added bonus. Let’s get radical.

Mark Pingitore of the Pagan Babies/April 18, 2014 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Mark Pingitore of the seminal Philly hardcore band Pagan Babies. Mark grew up in the Frankford section of Philadelphia and lived his first nineteen years there. He learned about rock music from his older brothers and came to discover early punk through mentions in the music press of the era. The spirit of punk and later hardcore punk captured young Mark’s imagination. Here were performers that were like him, not manufactured rockstars performing in massive arenas. Mark fell in love with punk and its spirit of direct involvement. Through letter writing, Maximumrocknroll scene reports, a ‘zine, a record label, printing flyers, booking shows, and ultimately playing in the band Pagan Babies, Mark took an active role in all aspects of the ’80s hardcore scene. In the process he met some of the brightest and most creative individuals (including Kevin Seconds and Ray of Today) in the scene and played with some of the very best bands of the era. Pagan Babies had releases on Positive Force and Hawker records and toured the U.S. The band left an indelible mark on the Philly scene and still sometimes play today. Mark’s enthusiasm for HC shines through the entire interview, which is filled with great and often hilarious stories. This interview runs 149 minutes, but there’s no filler here. I feel this is one of the best interviews of the series and you’ll find Mark’s positivity infectious. The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Episode 48: Mark Pingitore of Pagan Babies appeared first on Cinepunx.

I know that I always talk about this being a podcast that is all about Texas Punk and Hardcore, and I try to sit and talk with as many Texas bands as possible. However there are those times when a great touring band comes through, and I want to try to speak with those bands as well. Back in November I had the chance to speak with Sick Of It All and Kevin Seconds. This time around I had the privilege to speak with Mad Joe of Wisdom In Chains. This was a really fun interview. I hope that you all enjoy it. Thank you for listening. Enjoy the show.
Hello Everybody! Welcome to Episode 51 of Save It For The Breakdown. Here in Austin, Texas we are in the midst of Fun Fun Fun Fest. Thanks to Graham Williams, friend of the podcast, we were able to get access to the Homie area of the fest. This enabled Gjared and I to sit and talk with New York Hardcore legends, Sick Of It All. Later that evening we also caught up with Kevin Seconds of yet another legendary band 7 Seconds. Here on Save It For The Breakdown we primarily focus on our scene, Texas Punk/Hardcore/Metal, but when an opportunity to sit with Sick Of It All and 7 Seconds you take it. Thank you for listening. Enjoy the show.
Kevin Seconds is seated next to me on a small bench just in front of the Knitting Factory. As I prep the record and unravel the mic cords, fan after fan approach the singer. Some want autographs, some want to take a photo, some just want to say hello, but all have a story — mostly tales of seeing 7 Seconds way back when. Punk show stories that prove they’ve been there for the band for just as long as the band’s been there for them. Seconds has been living the stories since he was 19-year-old in Reno, one of two groups of brothers who helped bring the nascent hardcore scene to the biggest little city. At 53, he still appears grateful for every one. The band still tours, now and again, when Seconds isn’t putting out solo records or running a Sacramento coffee shop wife his wife, a fellow musician. In the past year, 7 Seconds even put a new record, Leave a Light On — it’s first in nine years. When he gets up on stage, the energy returns, though, granted, not quite the same level as the 19-year-old who started the group 35 years ago. But like his fans, those intervening decades have left Seconds with many more roads traveled and stories to tell.
I’d spoken with John Porcellino not all that long ago for Publishers Weekly feature discussing The Hospital Suite, the indie cartoonist longest self-contained work to date. Published by Drawn & Quarterly, the book is deeply personal, exploring long standing health concerns that caused Porcellino to be hospitalized numerous times over the years. Toward the end of that conversation, I asked the artist whether he’d be willing to meet up again for yet another interview when his book tour brought him to New York City. He’d only be in town for a couple of days for the Brooklyn Book Festival and would only have a couple of hours to spare, but he happily agreed to devote one of them to sitting down with me in front of a microphone yet again. Porcellino greeted me in the lobby of his Brooklyn hotel a few weeks later in a white t-shirt bearing the visage of celebrity cat, Lil Bub. He recognized me before I recognized him. He looked different than the last time we’d met, when I’d interviewed him on-stage at the Minneapolis Indie Expo a few years prior. Back then, he’d been in the throes of the health concerns at the center of his new book. “I’ve put on a little weight,” he said proudly. “I just turned 46, after all.” He didn’t look overweight, he just looked, well, healthy. He offered me an English muffin and apologized for tucking into the hotel breakfast that had only just arrived. He was making the most of his limited time as I set up the recorder. After five ten minutes of discussing the relative niceness of various hardcore frontmen (Ian MacKaye, Kevin Seconds and Keith Morris all get gold stars), any concerns I harbored about our ability to fill yet another hour’s worth of SD card with conversation melted away. For episode 75, here’s a wide ranging one with one of the most fascinating and longest lasting figures in the world of self-published comics. Punk rock, buddhism, nature, health and art all abound.
