Much hullaballoo and many predictions has been made about how AI will "disrupt" the publishing industry. In 2013, we predicted that the bookstore model would shift to more specialized indie stores that offered a narrower offering around their own curated interests and values, with more books face-out and unabashedly clear messaging about who the store is and is not for. And here are we are in 2024, with Charlie's Queer Books of Seattle, Washington offering a perfect example. Afterglow is a stunning collection of original short stories in which writers from many different backgrounds envision a radically different climate future. Published in collaboration with Grist, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions, these stirring tales expand our ability to imagine a better world. Afterglow draws inspiration from a range of cutting-edge literary movements including Afrofuturism, hope-punk, and solar-punk—genres that uplift equitable climate solutions and continued service to one's community, even in the face of despair. The Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, disabled, feminist, and queer voices in this collection imagine intersectional worlds in which no community is left behind. Whether through abundance or adaptation, reform, or a new understanding of survival, these stories offer flickers of hope, even joy, as they provide a springboard for exploring how fiction can help create a better reality. Holiday Hiatus Episode 3 "How To Create A Publishing Company The F*cking Punk Way OR Boundaries: Pretty Good For A Happy Life"I had the great good fortune to have a long conversation with the founder and CEO (as well as being an author) of Microcosm Publishing, Joe Biel.Joe generously gifted me time from a busy schedule, running a successful independent publishing company to talk about coming to publishing, discussing the journey to where the company is now, and how mental health has been presented in books in previous years and what the books that are being written look like in more recent years. Full disclosure, I'm a fan of Microcosm Publishing being a consumer of many of their books. This final new episode of 2022 is hella good fun, interesting and I enjoyed my too short time chatting with Joe. We're joined by our friend Justine Norton-Kertson of Solarpunk Magazine, to discuss the radical -- almost utopian -- hope that seems to define Solarpunk. This is a rich conversation covering Solarpunk Magazine itself, the role of science fiction and aesthetics in political movements, solarpunk's intersection with other political philosophies, and much more! Joe Biel founded Microcosm Publishing in Cleveland in the 90s, eventually moved to Portand, and expanded the business. Detailed show notes at https://www.ideastream.org/programs/sound-of-ideas/exploring-the-cleveland-roots-of-microcosm-publishing.
So many people have suffered endless rejections and want to know how to get their foot in the door. They think that if they can just get the right editor on the phone or get someone to listen, they can get published. To be fair, much of publishing is gatekept, preserving the experiences of certain people's experiences with certain educations from certain schools. So this week on the pod, we take a look at how to sidestep that and get your foot in the door! Ariel's new book, The Wayward Writer, addresses this point directly!************Thank you for watching the People's Guide to Publishing vlogcast! If you haven't read "The Autism Relationship Handbook and The Autism Relationship Workbook by Joe Biel and Dr. Faith Harper" you will definitely want to order copies of both after this episode. Joe is the founder of Microcosm Publishing in Oregon and Faith is a therapist is Texas. Working together for a number of years, they have partnered on several books and even have the same birthday. Joe shares his lived experience and expertise as a coach, mentor and business owner in a healthy Neurodiverse Love relationship and Faith shares her lived experience as a parent of a neurodiverse child and her expertise as a therapist and sexologist. During this episode, we talk about the importance of presuming "best intent" in your neurodiverse relationship and how critical it is to name and get granular about your boundaries and needs. We also talk about the 4 levels of communication and how each couple is usually getting stuck in one (or more) levels. Getting clarity about this and shifting perspective can reduce the "communication roundabout" some couples find themselves in. We also talk about physical intimacy, dealing with sensory differences and how to move from masking, struggling and being misunderstood to striving and thriving with a partner who truly appreciates and values you. Whether you are the autistic or allistic (non-autistic) partner in the relationship, this is a "don't miss episode. Joe and Faith provide SO many nuggets of gold that you may want to listen to this episode twice! WARNING: This episode is labeled "explicit" because at the end of the episode we talk about sexual intimacy and some books that have titles that may be considered explicit to some. Have you ever heard of neurodiversity? I hadn't. So here is one definition: it's a range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits (used especially in the context of autistic spectrum disorders). This brings me to this week's badass guest, Joe Biel, a neurodiverse creator. Biel is the founder and CEO of Microcosm Publishing and co-founder of the Portland Zine Symposium. Joe Biel is a self-made autistic publisher and filmmaker who draws origins, inspiration, and methods from punk rock. You will want to learn more about a man who fired his distributor to self-distribute in 2018 – which, for a publisher of his size, is completely unheard of in our industry. Despite that, he was able to grow the firm from around 10% per year to 60% per year. Joe teaches in college and his books are even used in colleges, yet Joe didn't technically earn his high school degree. Hopefully, by the end of this, you'll be a better person for it and reach the ultimate conclusion that despite our differences in brain functionality, or behaviorally, there is a place of worth for every single one of us! More about Joe Biel Joe has been featured in Time Magazine, Publisher's Weekly, Art of Autism, Utne Reader, Oregonian, Broken Pencil, Punk Planet, Bulletproof Radio, Spectator (Japan), G33K (Korea), and Maximum Rocknroll. He is the author of People's Guide to Publishing: Building a Successful, Sustainable Meaningful Book Business, Good Trouble: Building a Successful Life & Business on the Spectrum, Manspressions: Decoding Men's Behavior, Make a Zine!: When Words and Graphics Collide, The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting, Proud to be Retarded, Bicycle Culture Rising, and more. Joe is also the director of five feature films and hundreds of short films, including Aftermass: Bicycling in a Post-Critical Mass Portland, $100 & A T-Shirt, and the Groundswell film series. Share this episode with someone who is on the autism spectrum or loves someone on the spectrum. Highlights Solution: Joe founded the company Microcosm in 1996 to create the resources lacking for him as an at-risk, runaway kid. And it became a big help to solve other people's problems as well. Neurodiversity: We all have our own insecurities, but we also have to build things from the ground up, not knowing how they're done "correctly." Support: Having the support of a publisher is really important because it can help close those gaps between the emotional distance and the decisions that need to be made to bring the book to its proper audience. Learning: As an autistic person, having the opportunity to make your own mistakes and fail is the best way to learn because you have a different kind of cognitive development. Imperfectionism: You don't need to get a rubber stamp of approval in order to have your ideas deemed good enough. Curiosity: Just because one way of doing something works for a community of people doesn't necessarily mean that you have to apply the same thinking. Grit: What was freeing for Joe was he didn't feel the weight of other people's expectations – and this gave him more determination to show it could be done. Nothing means anything: It doesn't matter what you do so you should do the thing you want to do because there might not be a tomorrow. Consistency: An activity cycle is the opposing part of your day from your sleep cycle. People with autism struggle when surprises happen, or they run into unexpected hardship. That's why activity cycles and sleep cycles are needed for consistency and predictability. Overwhelm: All autistic people experience 400% more stimulus. It means they notice more things, smell more things, see more things, and hear more things. And so, a lot of times, the brain is completely overwhelmed by that data. Coping: A meltdown happens when an autistic person cannot cope with their environment, and so they're panicking. One of the major ways autistic people cope is to have scripts that mitigate surprises by knowing what to do, not becoming unexpectedly hungry, taking medication, etc. Systematized: It's helpful to break things into smaller, more manageable tasks. It makes it much easier for autistic people to break down those surprises. Reward: Giving them rewards whenever they've accomplished a certain thing helps people with autism stay focused. Qualifications: Those certifications and the pedigrees aren't worth anything in the publishing industry because it doesn't teach you critical thinking or attention to detail. Learn it in yourself by finding a way that works rather than just repeating a series of steps somebody else made up. Parenting: Parents have a habit of coddling their children because they don't want them to get hurt because they only see vulnerability. But without that, the kid doesn't learn from those mistakes. Learning from pain: Kids have to get hurt in order to learn from things, otherwise they're just going to end up isolated and not understanding why things aren't working out. They need that perfect distance of being loved and supported, but yet able to have the space and distance to make mistakes. Purpose: If you take away a kid's meaning and purpose, even if that's playing video games, that kid is going to be miserable and resent you forever. So help them find what they want, rather than what you want for them. Mindfulness: Oftentimes, someone with autism is not necessarily imposing on themself limitations, but it's those who don't identify with being autistic that are the ones pushing on those limitations. Another amazing episode of Channel Weird with Clyde Lewis from Portland, Oregon. Clyde chats with Joe Biel from Microcosm Publishing.
Tomorrow marks our 25th anniversary of Microcosm Publishing so we bring you one formative memory from each year that creates the amalgamated experience of our success and story.
In this episode of Justice in Motion, Daniel talks to disability rights activist and small business owner Annie Carl. Annie's journey as a social justice advocate began when, as a lifelong book-lover and bookshop owner in Edmonds, Washington, she discovered that diversity in the disability community didn't get the representation it merited from booksellers. Daniel and Annie covered a lot of ground in this conversation, including topics like the Fries Test for disability representation, tokenism and fetishization of disability in media (you may be more familiar with the term "inspiration porn"), and ableism in portrayals of villains from Richard III to Captain Hook. Annie also provides some recommendations of films and series for people interested in broadening their perspective on what it means to be disabled, which we have included links to below. Faith is not only an expert in the field of sex and therapy, but she normalizes all human behavior and frames it in a way that is so fun to talk about (she says the F-word a lot!). If you want to be able to show up more authentically in your relationships, and more importantly, with yourself, you’ve got to work through your shit. Faith’s Bio: Dr. Faith Harper is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board Supervisor in the State of Texas, with postdoctoral certifications in Nutrition (ACN) and Sexology (ACS). Questioning Authority... Now And... Then On this edition of Parallax Views, the them is questioning authority with two guests who highlight resistance in both the present and our historical past. First up, investigative reporter Arun Gupta, founding editor of The Indypendent, joins us to talk about his work organizing the No More Concentration Camps movement. Firecracker congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caused a stir recently by referring to ICE detention centers for migrants and refuges as concentration camps. Some pundits have decried AOC's statements as a bridge to far and argue the concentration camp characterization is irresponsible. Arun Gupta, however, agrees with AOC's take and joins us to explain why in this pertinent conversation. Paul KrassnerApril 19, 1932 - July 21, 2019 Next up, Joseph E. Green, a contributing writer at Garrison: The Journal of History and Deep Politics, joins us to celebrate the life and times of investigative satirist, Yippie activist, and all-around counterculture icon Paul Krassner. A consummate rebel and subversive humorist who proved a thorn in the side of the establishment thanks in part to his groundbreaking underground press 'zine The Realist, Paul Krassner passed away at the age of 87 in late July of this year. Alongside Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, Krassner helped found the Youth International Party, or Yippies, who pranked on right-wing authoritarians throughout the turbulent times of the Vietnam war. Green, who currently publishes his own underground zines through Microcosm Publishing, was heavily influenced by Krassner's work and helps us celebrate the legacy he left behind. Be sure to check out two book reviews that Green mentioned on this episode here and here.

In this episode, Green discusses his favorite alternative publications of the past, the historical basis for the demographics that brought the Guyanese government to power, the parapolitics behind the Guyanese government of the 1970s, the rise of Jim Jones in Indiana, the U.S. intelligence links to Indiana University, the friendship of Jones with Dan Mitrione, the move to Ukiah and the World Vision links, Catcher in the Rye, whether or not Jones was a "real preacher," how Reagan's California affected events, Congressman Leo Ryan, Mark Lane's role at Jonestown, and much, much more. Just prior to that, in 1996, he had started a part-time mail order business out of his bedroom in Cleveland, Ohio -- this mail order business eventually became Microcosm Publishing an independent publisher and distributor. During the past 20+ years, Microcosm has relocated to Portland, and grew significantly with countless ups and downs and changes in the way books are sold and consumed. Then in his 30s, my guest was diagnosed with Autism. Through all of this he's learned a lot of what and what not to do, so he put it down in a book called Good Trouble: Building a Successful Life and Business with Asperger's. In this conversation, we discuss what it means to grow up in punk rock, why you should plan forward, and understanding what the emotional payoff is for your customers. Now, let's hack... Joe Biel.

Howdy Joyriders! WELCOME TO SEASON THREE! I'm joined on episode 31 by reformed backpacker-turned-bikecamper Dana Kroeck of the blog Blisters and Bugbites! We chat about her love of rail trails, a magical car-free island in..Michigan, and the most unlikely group ride you can possibly imagine. But first.. UPDATES: Bikequity: Money, Class, and Bicycling I'm honored to have been included with some excellent voices in Elly Blue's 14th installment of her feminist bicycling zine Taking The Lane called Bikequity: Money, Class, and Bicycling: Bicycling has the radical potential of equalizing our transportation system, creating more equitable opportunities from the personal to the societal, and being a vehicle for protest and social justice. But that isn't how it always works. The contributors to this volume of Taking the Lane zine tackle of the potentials and realities and unintended consequences of trying to create a better world using human-powered transportation. Edited by Elly Blue and featuring work by Tamika Butler, Adonia Lugo, Do Jun Lee, Gretchin Lair, V.K. Henry, Lauren Hage, Tammy Melody Gomez, Phill Melton, Cat Caperello, Joe Biel, Julie Brooks, Kassandra Karaitis, Katura Reynolds, Rebecca Fish Ewan, Rhienna Renée Guedry, and Adrian Lipscombe. Check it out and let me know what you think! Inspired to Ride Inspired to Ride follows the inaugural TransAm bike race from Oregon to Virginia which took place in 2015. It is an ultra-endurance self-supported race across the entire country. It's mind-blowing what these athletes do to themselves. Y'all. In digging up the trailer for this I discovered that Mike Hall was killed in 2017. He's prominently featured in the film and trailer below. He strikes me as a guy who did exactly what he wanted. May we all have the power to harness our own capabilities. Also the gal who I referenced as a BADASS WOMAN ON A BIKE in the pod is named Juliana Buhring, the Guinness World Record for being the fastest woman to circumnavigate the world on a bicycle and she wrote about Mike in this article for Outside. I would be super grateful if you'd leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Also, I read 5-star reviews out on the show because I love you. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it'd be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Never forget, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C

Former U.S. Team cyclists Elizabeth Emery talks to three amazing women cyclists who are from different disciplines, each with unique skills and covering a wide range of what cycling is all about — which is the focus for this new monthly show Off The Front. Emma Pooley is a former road cyclist and now multi-sport athlete. While road racing, she won 9 Olympic, World, and Commonwealth Games medals, 6 World Cups, and the 2010 Time Trial World Championship. She now focuses on what she loves and is inspired by —racing in the mountains. They discuss the transition from road cycling on a team to the independent life of individual sports, working with sponsors, coaching and training; her future fame and fortune in Pocket Porridge along with lots of other great stuff, including the UCI and improving women’s cycling. This month’s Training Tip comes from coach Alison Dunlap, who is one of Elizabeth's absolute favorite riders from when they raced together. Alison competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics road race, then switched to mountain biking in 1997. That year she won a World Cup and went on to great success in that sport. She is 2001 Mountain Bike World Champion, 13x National Champion, 2x Olympian, and now proud mom to 6 1/2 yr old son Emmett! She offers a really important tip useful for on the bike, in other sports, and in daily life. Recently, Elizabeth discovered writer and publisher Elly Blue through her Kickstarter campaign for the upcoming 14th issue of her feminist cycling zine, Taking the Lane. In 2015 she merged her little publishing operation with Microcosm Publishing in Portland, Oregon, where she is now co-owner and marketing director. Julia Alekseyeva’s graphic novel Soviet Daughter: A Graphic Revolution was published by Microcosm Publishing in 2017. This is the intertwining story of two women: Lola, who was born in a Jewish family in Kiev in 1910, and her great-granddaughter Julia, whose family moved to the United States from Ukraine in the wake of the events at Chernobyl. Lola has gone through the Bolshevik revolution, the Civil War, the Stalinist purges, deportation to Kazakhstan, and the Chernobyl disaster and these are her real-life memoirs that lay the foundation for the novel. The chapters telling Lola’s story are alternated with shorter interludes from the contemporary life of the second protagonist, Julia, a representative of the generation of millennials, who are struggling to come to terms with their idealistic views on life and politics amidst the changing world order. Alekseyeva, who is a PhD student in Comparative Literature at Harvard University, works on avant-garde cinema in the USSR, Japan, and France, and her academic interest in visual narrative techniques has deeply affected her work on the graphic novel. The story-telling in Soviet Daughter is rich and intense, and also full of supplementary comments and explanations of various aspects of Soviet everyday life; however, the novel is very easy to read and grasps the readers attention from the very first pages. To this, the sincerity of Alekseyeva’s intonation contributes greatly. She does not shy away from being very honest about issues such as inter-generational misunderstanding, conflicts within family, and difficulties of the migrant experience yet at the same time she persistently maintains the tactful balance between a personal story-telling and a nearly academic inquiry into the experience of several generations of Soviet Jewish immigrants in America. The precursors of Alekseyeva’s novel are works such as Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home. Another major influence on Alekseyeva is actually Vladimir Mayakovsky, especially his work in Okna ROSTA. Soviet Daughter does, in fact, open by a quote from Mayakovsky. Julia Alekseyeva’s novel will be of much interest both to the broad readers audience, and also to the scholars of Soviet history, Jewish identity, and immigration. Into all of these themes it provides a fascinating insight. Olga Breininger is a PhD candidate in Slavic and Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University. Her research interests include post-Soviet culture and geopolitics, with a special focus on Islam, nation-building, and energy politics. Olga is the author of the novel There Was No Adderall in the Soviet Union and columnist at Literratura. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Well, well, well. What's been up in your lives, lately, America? Any news you'd like to discuss? This week, we bring you a conversation with the members of The Dinner and Bikes Tour. The Dinner & Bikes is a month-long tour of the U.S. to bring people together to eat delicious food and get inspired about bicycle transportation. Here's what happens at a Dinner and Bikes event: As the audience arrives, they serve themselves from chef Joshua Ploeg's seven-course gourmet vegan and gluten-free buffet spread. While the audience is eating, local advocates discuss their work and local issues and initiatives over the first fifteen minutes. Then, Elly Blue and Joe Biel co-present a new interactive discussion and presentation including eight short films about Groundswell movements, incidences where people demand better neighborhood conditions and successfully implemented them. Stories include how Reading, PA came to be 13th on the East Coast for bike commuting without any advocacy or government spending, former gang members riding bikes to raise awareness about gang violence, Mexico City's superhero of the streets, Peatonito, the story of the League of American Bicyclists' equity council, how the City of Portland's Sunday Parkways worked as a response to gentrification, and how cyclists are representing themselves and creating their own voices all over the world. Throughout the evening there are plenty of opportunities for discussion, questions, and browsing the Microcosm pop-up book and t-shirt store. Joe Biel is the co-producer/director of Groundswell, the director of the feature documentary Aftermass: Bicycling in a Post-Critical Mass Portland as well as over 100 short films. He is also the author of half a dozen books, including Good Trouble: Building a Successful Life & Business with Asperger's. He founded Microcosm Publishing in his bedroom closet in 1996 and has since published over 350 nonfiction books, zines, and movies. He lives in Portland, Oregon. Elly Blue is the co-producer/director of Groundswell and the author of Bikenomics: How Bicycling Can Save the Economy and Everyday Bicycling: How to Ride a Bicycle for Transportation (Whatever your Lifestyle). When she isn't writing, she is the marketing director of Microcosm Publishing, producing books and zines about all aspects of feminism, self-empowerment, and bicycle transportation. She lives in Portland, Oregon. Joshua Ploeg is the the traveling vegan chef. When not touring the world, he is a personal chef and delighter of secret cafe goers in Los Angeles. His eighth and newest cookbook is This Ain't No Picnic: Your Punk Rock Vegan Cookbook. He lives in California. As the country and the world move into unprecedented and scary territory, we are heartened by the kinds of young people that Joe, Elly and Joshua represent. They are not looking for a savior or a political party to make the world a better place for them. They are hitting the ground and making it better themselves. They are building community and empowering marginalized voices and advocating for a world that does not constantly run itself adrift under the weight of its own hubris and apathy.
Joe Biel is a self-made publisher and filmmaker who draws origins, inspiration, and methods from punk rock. He is the founder/manager of Microcosm Publishing and co-founder of the Portland Zine Symposium. Joe is the author of Good Trouble: Building a Successful Life & Business on the Spectrum. On this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dave and Joe talk about growing up with Asperger's, learning values from punk rock, succeeding in business on the spectrum, stress management, quality books, repairing the publishing system and more. Enjoy the show!

Meet Elly! This is episode # 6 of the Joyride and even though this is a still a tiny little baby podcast, it's a pretty BIG episode, because it is with none other than the fantastic Elly Blue. You may remember her name mentioned in the first two episodes of the Joyride because she founded The Wheelwomen Switchboard and edited/published The Velocipede Races. Elly is a bike transportation advocate, an editor and author who is publishing the feminist bicycle revolution. Her own books include Everyday Bicycling and most recently, Bikeonomics: How Bicycling Can Save the Economy - a smart look at how we get around, how we spend our money and the real costs of transportation. All these links go right to Microcosm Publishing, not Amazon. I know you might have Prime, and Amazon might just be easier, but please - do what you can to support small press. This is innovative, quality stuff made with care at an indie publishing house, and your direct support means a lot more to them than it does to Amazon. Here are timestamps to some of the topics we discuss on this episode: 3:55 - Elly's first bike 5:45 - Elly moves to Portland 8:40 - Precious Cargo - Our Bodies, Our Bikes, Cycletherapy: Grief & Healing 13:18 - Elly's every ride carry 14:58 - Mechanical comfort & bike maintenance 17:05 - Feeling safe 19:50 - Taking the Lane 23:33 - Dinner & Bikes, Groundswell 25:31 - Fantasy Ride 25:57 - Favorite Places 27:28 - Snacks 28:53 - Bikecamping & Blackberries 30:49 - Bike books! Including Pedal Zombies (where my first piece of fiction is published), Velocipede Races 33:12 - Parting wisdom for the bike curious Big thanks to Elly for hanging out! This week's guest is BOB SUREN! Bob Suren is the author behind one of my favorite book discoveries this year, Crate Digger, out now on Microcosm Publishing. The book is about his early childhood discoveries of punk rock, how that discovery became an obsession. He tells the stories of how he opened Sound Idea in Brandon, Florida and Burrito Records out of that same shop; not to mention how he met and fell in love with his wife in those hallowed halls. Bob was recently in Denver to promote Crate Digger, and this interview was done at the 7th Circle Music Collective. This episode also includes exerts from the Crate Digger audio book, also out on Microcosm Publishing.
Several years ago, I began to notice a pattern emerging. Practically every book of interest I'd pick up at independent bookstores and zine fest had the same logo on the back: a small bicycle gear with a heart at the center. Microcosm had seemingly come out of nowhere to corner the market on things that fascinate me. Joe Biel formed the indie publishing empire out of his Cleveland bedroom in the mid-90s, moving Microcosm to greener Pacific Northwestern pastures of Portland, Oregon in 1999, where the company still remains, along with with a retail storefront baring the same name. After a year and a half of attempting to coordinate an interview, Biel and I finally found ourselves in the same place. He was kindly enough to make a detour to my Queens apartment during a brief stopover in New York following an appearance at bicycle policy convention in Colombia. It's a subject matter than has long been near and dear to the publisher, recently manifesting itself in the form of Aftermass, a documentary exploring Portland's cycling community. Biel and I sat down over a couple of cups of tea to discuss cycling, his filmmaking and the strange and fascinating world of independent publishing.

On this week's episode of the podcast, Andy and Derek explore the worlds of hardcore cohabitation, biographical brilliance, and wood witches. They begin with Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever, the new collection from Tom Neely and friends (Microcosm Publishing). This follows Neely's original minicomic Henry & Glenn Forever and collects the four-issue miniseries published between 2013 and 2014. For those unfamiliar, this is a situational satire of metal rockers Henry Rollings and Glenn Danzig, working from the premise of their love for one another and placing their relationship in a variety of different sitcom-like scenarios. Tom Neely created the original, and more narratively substantive, stories of Henry and Glenn, but he has many of his artist friends — such as Mark Randolph, Ed Luce, Johnny Ryan, and Noah Van Sciver — contribute short pieces as well. Some stories are better than others, but the Two Guys conclude that the book as a whole is hilariously fun. Next, Derek and Andy turn to Masterful Marks: Cartoonists Who Changed the World, a collection of graphic biographies edited by Monte Beauchamp (Simon and Schuster). In fact, they spend a good chunk of this week's show talking about this book…and there is a lot to discuss. It's composed of sixteen short comics that present the lives of such luminaries as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Jack Kirby, Winsor McCay, Charles Schulz, Walt Disney, Osamu Tezuka, Chas Addams, Dr. Seuss, and Hergé. These biographies are written and drawn by impressive creators in their own rights, such as Nora Krug, Arnold Roth, Frank Stack, and Denis Kitchen. The guys discuss most of these biographies, but they particularly highlight two of their favorites: Peter Kuper's take on Harvey Kurtzman and Drew Friedman's look at Robert Crumb. In fact, the latter is not so much a biography of the legendary artist as much as it is a story of Friedman's experiences and relationship with Crumb. Much like Kuper's, this is more than a straight-out biography. It's a personal and even self-reflexive narrative. Finally, the Two Guys get all excited about the new series from Scott Snyder and Jock, Wytches (Image Comics). They point out that while this could have easily been a Vertigo title, Snyder is apparently wanting to try his indie chops over at Image with a new ongoing series. And he and Jock have started off impressively! What makes the first issue of Wytches so engaging is its elaborate setup and its emersion in the everyday. Both Andy and Derek mention how the world that Snyder sets up reminds them of their own childhoods and the kind of creepy wooded areas that fueled their own imaginations. They're both on board with this new title, and they hope — they expect — it to be another in Image's growing line of perennials, following the likes of The Walking Dead, Saga, and Manhattan Projects.

I was really into zines when I was in high school. I spent almost all my time on alt.zines, spent way too much time hunting for old issues of Urban Hermitt, and constantly found myself browsing the fantastic zine section at Tower Records. Almost all my money went to Microcosm Publishing. But whenever I’d browse […]
