We are blessed to have our first return guest, Kimberly Turner who is the Designer, Creative Director, & Stylist for Elizabeth In Pearls. Kim is also an advocate for awareness for an important public health issue - endometriosis. According to the Office on Women's Health - Endometriosis, often referred to as “endo,” is a condition that happens when tissue similar to the lining of a woman's uterus (womb) grows outside of the uterus. March Is Endometriosis Awareness Month and we are having this conversation to raise awareness and provide resources for how to manage our health experiences. The Endometriosis Association began Endo Awareness Month in 1993. ENDO is common. Nearly 15% of American women are impacted, with over 200 million worldwide. In the U.S., research suggests that race plays a significant role in misdiagnosis. Historically, many doctors once believed that White and Asian women got endometriosis and Black women did not. For decades, endometriosis has been thought of as "a White woman's disease". However, doctors now know that race and ethnicity play a large role in whether a woman develops endometriosis, and how long it takes to get a correct diagnosis, and treatment. For example: Black women are less likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis than White women Asian women are most likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis than any other racial group Hispanic women were less likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis than White women Many healthcare providers were educated based on the idea that an endometriosis diagnosis is less likely in Black women. For example, a 1951 study suggested that Black women rarely got endometriosis due to genetic factors. As a result, racial bias has influenced both diagnosis and endometriosis care in the African American community. Endometriosis uniquely affects African-American women. Traditional thinking was that endometriosis was a condition of white women but that conventional thinking is rapidly changing. Unfortunately, when Black women have chronic pelvic pain it is presumed to be due to other conditions like PID (pelvic inflammatory disease, a pelvic infection) or uterine fibroid tumors (very common in Black women). However, endometriosis is real and common in many African-American women.

Court in foster care can seem like a scary, gigantic ordeal. But it isn't, especially when you realize how little say that foster parents have in their foster child's court case.  This episode goes through our 5 years of court cases - which pretty much means nothing to you - since court is so different for everyone! But what you basically need to know is this- if you can go, THEN GO! Even if you don't have a chance to speak, you usually learn more about the case, and about the children you are caring for. This is also a great opportunity to meet the bio family, and possibly forge a relationship with them. FCRBs, aka Foster Care Review Boards, are an opportunity for foster parents to make a statement in front of a board of volunteers who work hard to get official statements in front of a judge. There is some debate whether these are given much weight or not, but that may depend on the judge. When given an opportunity to advocate for your foster child, we say to take it. We thought FCRBs were just for foster parents, but it is also for bio parents. That's actually the first time we met Wesley's parents - at an FCRB. And it was interesting. Which leads to another point we made, which is to be aware of how you are dressing for court, and other official meetings like an FCRB. You don't have to be dressed to the nines. Even nice jeans will do. But be aware that you may see bio families, and other people who may be judging you on first appearances. TDMs are Team Decision Meetings, and are supposed to include all parties on a child's team - case managers, bio and foster parents, lawyers, etc. These are usually supposed to be pretty low key. But we did go to one, after parents' rights were severed, and it was INTENSE. So, again - anything can happen! But no one is more oppressed than our foster kids. Sometimes all this court stuff, and meetings, and appointments feels like a major hassle, and a little inconvenient, but when we can remember the inconvenience and hassle of our foster babes' lives - I think we as the responsible adults can continue to endure, and advocate, and provide for these kids! What is a GaL? Not just a cute name for a girl. A Guardian ad Litem is a lawyer, who is assigned to a child in foster care, and their job is to represent the best interest of the children they serve. If a child in foster care is 12 and older, they are legally able to request another attorney. The other lawyer advocates for what that child wants. The lighthearted example that Kim Turner shared with us is that a GaL will advocate that their client needs to eat vegetables every day, and their personal attorney can advocate that the child would like to eat candy instead. Obviously the issues are more serious, but that's a picture of the two lawyers' roles in a foster child's case. Definition of ad litem : for the lawsuit or action : appointed by the court to represent a client or estate in a particular legal action Merriam Webster There is recourse for GaLs who neglect to visit their clients before a court hearing! They must sign affidavits that state that they visited their clients! So if you are a foster parent who has never heard from your GaL, you need to speak up! But keep in mind that the GaL may send out a social worker who represents their law office, and this is the norm. Kim Turner, who has been practicing Juvenile Law for 15 years. She has 100 cases, which involves 150+ children. THAT'S A LOT OF KIDS! She has 3 amazing Social Workers who work for her, and they often go out to visit the foster children and report back to Kim. She makes every effort to visit the children herself. But her main job is to be at court, representing her clients in front of a judge. What is SB1473, and how does it affect foster families? Kim mentioned that a new law was passed in August of 2018, and here are some facts about it: "SB1473, enacted into law on August 3, 2018, amended Arizona’s child welfare statutes in important ways. The legislature adopted these changes in an 87:1 vote, demonstrating the strong consensus behind the spirit and letter of the reforms. "The law creates a presumption that foster families who have cared for an infant for nine months or more are kin. If, after nine months, a party wants to move an infant to another relation or placement, the change of placement must be in the infant’s best interest; "When a child is taken into custody, DCS is now specifically required to make an initial search for adult relatives of the child within thirty days from the date the child is taken into custody. In performing the initial search, DCS must exercise due diligence in identifying and notifying a child’s adult kin (including those adults with a significant relationship) within that thirty-day time frame." Read more here. Some other great resources: Casey Family Foundation, Generation Justice, both of these organizations exist to help the vulnerable children in foster care. We also referenced Michelle Obama's new book, as well as Kevin Hart's biography, in our Light Bulb Moments. Both books are wonderful and worth the read. Notably, the listen may be better - both are read by the authors in the audio versions on Audible! The (Good) Word of the Day Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 This was our good Word for episode 49 as well, but it's because it is so powerful. It is easy to be jaded by the grim facts and figures of foster care. The children in the system are victims who deal with trauma every single day. The Bible commands us to care for orphans and widows, but foster kids are not necessarily orphans! So many of them have parents, and they daily deal with their allegiance to their biological families, and life in foster care. So even though these children are not orphans, ALL CHILDREN need caring adults who love them, support them, and can guide them at every stage of life. We have been participating in Dwell with Dignity for several years but this is our first time being asked to design a vignette for Thrift Studio here in Atlanta. 1.  DWELL WITH DIGNITY - WHAT IS IT? A. Dwell with Dignity started in Dallas in 2009 by Lisa Robison and Kim Turner. They deal with agencies who work to place homeless families. The agencies nominate families who want to be self-sufficient. DWD furnishes the families home, stocks the pantry with groceries and provides the first night’s meal. Theses families have faced some very tough times and have worked hard to earn a beautiful place to live. B. They are able to furnish these homes (mainly apartments) with donations from the design community, manufacturers , retailers and the community. Thrift studio is their largest fundraiser. 2.  THRIFT STUDIO - WHAT IS IT? Thrift Studio is a pop-up shop created to provide funds to Dwell with Dignity by selling donated furniture, housewares, accessories and high-end designer finds to the public. Since the concept launched in Dallas in 2011, the event has grown into a highly anticipated and can’t-miss event for DWD supporters, the interior design community and the general public looking for a fabulous deal on home furnishings. 1. Intro a) Using your talents to help others is a rewarding experience. Helping those less fortunate to have a sense of home has been a goal and mission for Kandrac & Kole. b) Starting with a “princess room” for Emma and onto Room Service Atlanta, Dwell with Dignity and Guatemala mission trips, our deeds have been varied and purposeful. 2. Making Generosity Part of our Growth Strategy a) EMMA – child of a 25 -year old mother who was a victim of domestic violence and had to move in with Grandparents.  She was 2 and her brother was 11 months old. We were asked by family members if we could help with bedroom.  That was back in 2011. Read blog titled “My Good Deed”. i. Reaching out to family members, vendors, clients and colleagues to help us with our mission. ii. Jay Scott and Joan Looney – original art on walls iii. The closet factory – bookshelves iv. Family – Brother and Sister in law – Cinderella Carriage Bed v. Others – books, beanbag, growth chart, and monetary donations b) ROOM SERVICE ATLANTA – Launched in 2010 i. Design Community Outreach – Started by Erika Ward and Dayka Robinson ii. Goal – To combine a love for design with a commitment to serve others. iii. In 2012 and 2013 we redesigned an apartment and the Boy’s Lounge at The United Methodist Children’s Home in Decatur and the following year, a Girl’s Cottage. iv. The Independent Living Program for youth in the foster care system who are at least 17 years old and are ready for a decreased level of supervision as they prepare for independence.  Many of these boys have been in foster care their entire lives. The amazing staff at UMCH provides 24 support to these kids as well. v. This support consists of giving them educational, vocational and employment opportunities. vi. They also help them to get medical and mental health services as needed. c) DWELL WITH DIGNITY -  http://www.dwellwithdignity.org i. Started in Dallas – Founded in 2009 by interior designers Lisa Robison and Kim Turner ii. Mission:  To help families escape poverty and homelessness through design, one household at a time. iii. Goal:  Bring good design to those less fortunate, inspiring them to maintain a standard of living they can be proud of and thrive in. iv. Method:  Create inspiring home interiors with the labor of dedicated volunteers and generosity of donors. v. They partner with local social service agencies that have programs in place to take families from homelessness and poverty to self-sufficiency. They nominate families that have made a commitment to self-sufficiency and changing their life. Often times, after a family has received all of the counseling, training, and support from their partner agencies, they find themselves struggling to provide a home in which they can thrive. Dwell with Dignity addresses this critical economic need through their mission. d) THE ATLANTA DWD PROJECT -  The entire 2 Bedroom apartment was done for a deserving, formerly homeless mother of 2 girls, ages 3 and 18 months.  The details of the room we designed. http://kandrac-kole.com/portfolio/charity/dwell-with-dignity/ i. The blog focuses on career information for growth and entertainment. When she's not working on 925 Blueprint, Kim is busy working in human resources for her fiance's business.
