Dear Johnny, On December 13th, my wife Anna, had an appointment with a Hematologist/Oncologist due to severe anemia. That night at 7pm, we received a call from the doctor telling us to go to the Emergency Room for a blood transfusion due to a hemoglobin level of 5.1 (normal levels are usually between 12.0-15.0). Fifteen minutes later, her doctor called again and told us she needed to go to a bigger hospital because there was significant percentage of blasts (immature white blood cells) in her blood. Finding these blasts is a strong indicator of leukemia. That evening we arrived at the University of Kansas Hospital. After talking with a nurse, she was admitted to Labor & Delivery unit because, she is also 18 weeks pregnant. After completing more blood work it was determined that she needed 3 units of blood because her hemoglobin had dropped to 4.5. The following day two Hematologists came to deliver the news that she has Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which is an aggressive form of Leukemia, and she would need to be admitted to the Leukemia unit to begin a minimum 5 week stay where she would start chemotherapy. The hard part is now that she is immunocompromised, she is unable to see the kids in person until she can go home. After a bone marrow biopsy, her form of Leukemia was confirmed. December 20th she began her first round of chemotherapy and will continue with this round of treatment for a total of 7 days. There is no guarantee that this round of chemotherapy will put her into remission; in the event that it does not, she will begin another round of treatment. These past few weeks have been such a crazy, overwhelming, whirlwind of events. This is such a scary time for our family; but we are staying as positive as we can. We are just trying to focus on what is happening now and not worry about the future. I just want to say friends and family have been so great to help out with the boys, meals, and sending well wishes and prayers. You really have no idea who is in your corner until something like this happens and we are blessed for the support we have received. I have taken several days off work and it has put us behind and I just don't want my wife to have any extra worries. Thank you for reading our letter. We appreciate it. I'm up in British Columbia this week for the first time since the pandemic; it's a beautiful place and at least where my friend Phil and I go, it's very peaceful, the perfect place to unwind and relax. But, as you'll hear, today's show is anything but peaceful: it's about a 1966 wildcat strike by 400 mostly women members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers at Lenkurt Electric in Burnaby, British Columbia, which was a turning point for the province's labor movement. Back then, courts and police routinely jailed and fined union members during labor disputes, and Canadian members of international unions were demanding more autonomy. Our show comes to us from the On The Line: Stories of BC Workers podcast, and the story of the Lenkurt Electric strike is described by Ian McDonald, whose book "The Red Baron of IBEW Local 213: Les McDonald, Union Politics, and the 1966 Wildcat Strike at Lenkurt Electric" will be published in 2024. You'll also hear Bill Hood and The Gram Partisans debut their original song "Lenkurt Electric: Turning the Tide". - Chris Garlock, host Questions, comments, or suggestions are welcome, and to find out how you can be a part of Labor History Today, email us at LaborHistoryToday@gmail.com Labor History Today is produced by the Labor Heritage Foundation and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor. @BC_LHC #LaborRadioPod #History #WorkingClass #ClassStruggle @GeorgetownKILWP #LaborHistory @UMDMLA @ILLaborHistory @AFLCIO @StrikeHistory #LaborHistory @wrkclasshistory

How do we maintain our lighting control systems? We've said it before and Kelly says it again. Education! - and interoperability, but we're not there yet - so, education! The facilities manager who leaves that job 5 years down the road is then replaced by a new facilities manager who doesn't know the system and doesn't know who to contact. Now the lighting doesn't perform as it should and the company that installed it receives complaints. Nobody wins. Listen to this episode and learn how sales reps can help your projects from the very beginning to long after the building is occupied. Kelly is in the DC metro area, living 45 minutes south of DC in a rural town on the Patuxent River with his wife and 2 toddlers. His career started as an IBEW Local 26 Electrician, where he spent a few years installing lighting controls. The draw for him was seeing the end-product of a project and seeing everything go from inoperable to working. He followed this over to Lutron as a field service tech performing startups and servicing systems for their commercial division. He was pulled by his best friend over to Chesapeake Lighting, when they needed an outside specification salesperson for lighting controls. He primarily calls on engineers and lighting designers, but sways in the balance of supporting the inside team, distributors, contractors, and end-users.
