The four top college women's basketball teams will face off in Minneapolis this weekend in the NCAA Women's Final Four tournament. Last year, the NCAA came under fire for gender disparities in how its men's and women's tournaments were run. In response, the NCAA commissioned a report on its gender inequities. The report, released in August 2021, found that the NCAA has prioritized men's basketball over women's teams, and outlined a number of suggestions to address the disparities.  This year is the first time that the Women's Final Four is branded as March Madness alongside the men's tournament. And basketball fans and athletes hope to see increased resources, branding and attention for the women's tournament this weekend.  MPR News host Angela Davis on Friday talked with a coach for the University of Minnesota's women's basketball team and an expert on women in sports about the Final Four Tournament and gender disparities.  Guests:  Nicole LaVoi is the director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota. They begin with the recent situation surrounding Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, 35, a three-time Olympian, who has been missing since November 2, when she used social media to accuse Zhang Gaoli, 75, a former vice premier of China, of sexually assaulting her at his home three years ago. The IOC President Thomas Bach held a video call with Peng, which was unconvincing to experts. The many reported incidents of abuse and harassment by coaches in the National Women's Soccer League is also discussed. They conclude with why women's sports needs men as allies to oust offenders and why leadership in sport needs women to move the needle.Host: Dr. Nicole LaVoiRecorded: November 22, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Top-ranked tennis player Naomi Osaka's decision to pull out of the French Open after being fined for saying she would not appear at mandatory press conferences is bringing renewed attention to the mental health struggles of athletes.  The 23-year-old champion shared publicly that she has experienced depression and anxiety since 2018 when she won her first of four consecutive Grand Slam singles titles at the U.S. Open. She shared that she feels “waves of anxiety” before press conferences. Osaka's bold step prompted debates on social media and elsewhere about expectations placed on athletes, especially women and athletes of color. Her decision also raises questions about whether and when talking to the press should be seen as an essential part of an athlete's job. Host Angela Davis talks to a journalist, a sports psychologist and a former collegiate tennis coach about pressures faced by athletes and how to better support their mental health.  Guests: Myron Medcalf is a Sunday metro columnist for the Star Tribune and a senior college basketball reporter and radio host with ESPN. Nicole LaVoi is director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota. She has researched women in sports and media coverage of women athletes. The goal of The Win Your Life Podcast is to illuminate the intersection between prevention and performance. The fitness industry is focused on performance and not always concerned with prevention. On the other hand, our health care system is focused, by necessity, on combatting the overwhelming amount of disease, illness and injury in our society. At the intersection of prevention and performance, there is a group of coaches, medical professionals, business leaders, athletes, and thought leaders that are working to help you Win Your Life. In this series, we are addressing the idea of 'Universal Prescriptions', the notion that there is a best way for us all to exercise, eat, sleep, breath and live.  In this episode, Catalyst Athletics Athlete & TPHMN Performance Coach Caitlin Schad tells her story of making the Catalyst Team and tells us how her breathing and meditation practice has helped her in her sport. The US Women's Soccer Team thrilled the world with their prowess on the field and leadership off of it. Their championship demonstrates the important impact of Title IX in funding and support for women athletics in schools and universities. Beyond soccer, women routinely eclipse male runners during marathons and other sports, pointing to a continuum of physical performance. The ambiguity of gender—as reflected in world class-athletes such as Caster Semenya—led the International Olympic Committee to adopt tests of testosterone levels and college athletic conferences to respond to intersex and trans-athletes. The physical ability and performances of women athletes are blurring historic and gendered divisions between men's and women's sports. Professor Mary Jo Kane will discuss the evolving state of women's sport with Dr. Jamie Feldman, an expert in transgender medicine. Mary Jo Kane is the director emerita of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport and a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. She is widely published on media coverage and women's sport and is a recognized expert on the impact of Title IX. Jamie Feldman, MD, PhD, is faculty in the University of Minnesota's Program in Human Sexuality. She has chaired a Transgender Medicine and Research Committee and published on transgender hormone therapy and primary care.

She shared the mind-boggling statistic that, while the passage of Title IX in 1972 led to an explosion in opportunities for female athletes, the percentage of women coaching women’s teams went from 90% back then to only around 42% today, and that statistic has remained stagnant for the past decade. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, we highly recommend it as a warm-up to this next installment featuring renowned hockey coach Shannon Miller.Miller’s long list of accomplishments include being the first female head coach for Team Canada and Canada’s first-ever female Olympic Head Coach; her team took silver in the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. She served as head coach for the University of Minnesota, Duluth’s women’s hockey team for 15 years, winning five NCAA championships. After the 2014-15 season, UMD chose not to renew Miller’s contract, citing budget concerns. Miller, along with former UMD softball coach Jen Banford and former women’s basketball coach Annette Wiles, filed a federal lawsuit against the university, alleging discrimination and Title IX violations. In March of 2018 Miller won that case and was awarded $3.74 million in damages. We spoke with her shortly after that verdict for this episode; in our next installment, we follow up a year later, getting an update on her legal battle, which is far from over.In this first conversation, Miller talks about the challenges she’s faced being a trailblazing female coach who has always been openly gay, and what motivates her to keep fighting for progress for women in athletics.
