Joanna and Jenny discuss whether or not shows like the new series GRISELDA are good for Latinos in Hollywood or just perpetuate harmful stereotypes, why the limited number of Latino TV shows and movies mean that nobody is ever happy with what's being released, and if the real harm to Latino representation in the entertainment industry is being done by the Latinos who are currently in power. In this episode, our host Lucila Rozas discusses the book Latino TV: A History (2022) by Mary Beltrán. You'll hear about: A brief trajectory of the book and the conversations on global studies of media and communication with which this book engages; The concept of cultural citizenship and its relevance to study Latino TV; How the author puts together the traces of the history of Latino TV, especially in the cases when it was difficult to find information about the series that were not preserved/archived; What has changed in the 2000s-2010s that led to the inclusion of more Latinx people in TV roles in front and behind the camera; How the diversification of latinidad identities in the TV shows is related to race, class, and gender through specific characters or forms of storytelling; The importance of Latino(a)(x) representation in the US TV industry and the potential limits of representation and visibility; The role of Latinx activism in the 1960s and 70s and the legacy of public television on today's media landscape; Some recent developments on Latino TV after the publication of the book, particularly given the ongoing writers' strike in streaming television. About the book The first-ever account of Latino/a participation and representation in US English-language television, Latino TV: A History offers a sweeping study of key moments of Chicano/a and Latino/a representation and authorship since the 1950s. Drawing on archival research, interviews with dozens of media professionals who worked on or performed in these series, textual analysis of episodes and promotional materials, and analysis of news media coverage, Mary Beltrán examines Latina/o representation in everything from children's television Westerns of the 1950s, Chicana/o and Puerto Rican activist-led public affairs series of the 1970s, and sitcoms that spanned half a century, to Latina and Latino-led series in the 2000s and 2010s on broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets, including George Lopez, Ugly Betty, One Day at a Time, and Vida. Phillip Lanos is a Los Angeles native. Hyperactive and often pensive, this actor, singer, songwriter, and podcast producer is best experienced in person. Due to his half-Mexican, half-French descent, he’s had opportunities to appear on international Latino TV channels like Telemundo for an American Idol spin-off show named “Yo Soy El Artista.” Phillip has also appeared on MTV’s “Copycat,” which was MTV’s attempt at singing competitions. In the podcasting world, Phillip has worked on over 300 episodes with entrepreneurial clients and journalism greats like Cal Fussman and Martin Perlich, and YouTube influencers like Roger Burnley. Finding a passion. What would you give up to pursue your passion? Phillip has dreamed of an acting and singing career, taken intentional steps and moved across the country to pursue those dreams. When he landed in NYC, he secured a great job with a well-known marketing agency, even though he felt terribly unqualified. He found a mentor, worked hard for success, and was soon offered a great position with a big salary. He turned it down. Why? He didn’t want to “settle” without at least trying something in which he could be his own boss. He walked away from those opportunities to truly pursue his passion. TWEET: I’m tired of doing permanent things with temporary people. @philliplanos Regrouping in a new direction Have you ever had to start over, refocus, and redirect your efforts? Phillip knows what that’s all about. He moved in a new direction by leaving NYC and moving back to Los Angeles. He had to regroup in order to plan for his success. There were certain boxes he wanted to “check” in his life so each plan and strategy had to be tested and measured. He wasn’t looking for one-dimensional success. He has since realized that you can have failure AND success at the same time in different areas of your life. It all comes down to what you’re willing to sacrifice for your dreams. TWEET: #Life won’t let me #fail as long as I put in the #work. @philliplanos Being vulnerable What is your deepest insecurity? For Phillip, it’s the “I’m not good enough” voice. You may think that’s unusual for an actor, but it’s really quite common. Phillip expresses this vulnerability in over-achieving or under-achieving, all in a quest to find balance. Phillip grew up as one of 18 siblings, with parents who weren’t a big part of his life. HIs father was diagnosed with ALS when Phillip was only 8, so he has few memories of good times with his father. Because of his family background, Phillip has keenly felt the need to make his life count. For this reason, he is very intentional about crafting his plan for success. TWEET: My deepest insecurity is that I’m not good enough. @philliplanos Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Do something real and get instant feedback. Take advantage of those lightning strikes that are full of positivity, faith, hope, and potential.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:40] How we met at Podcast Movement in California [6:18] Phillip’s passion in chasing the dream [8:32] Why he chose to go to NYC [12:25] When you “talk” yourself into a dream [14:10] Regrouping to find success [16:56] The holistic focus [19:46] Staying active in many areas [24:52] Being “not good enough” [28:16] Talking yourself into a dream in the middle of dark moments [35:10] Being back home [38:01] Phillip’s ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Philip’s Website Philip on Instagram Philip on Twitter TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: You’ve got to take a #loss sometimes to know what a #win looks like. @philliplanos TWEET: Just because you thoroughly enjoy something doesn’t mean you’re passionate about it. @philliplanos TWEET: Metaphorically and symbolically, I’ve come back to zero. @philliplanos
