What Role Does Our Inner Voice Have in Medicine with Researcher Tracy Poff

For this week's episode, Sarah talks with researcher Tracy Poff who is doing her PhD on Medical Intuitives. After visiting a medical medium for an unexplained illness in her family, she felt compelled to study transpersonal psychology and then pursue her doctorate in medical intuitive practices. We talk about what exactly that is, how to discern a good one when meeting someone for the first time, and a general discussion of how intuition can inform all our decisions to make us more in tune with ourselves - a favorite topic on The Side Woo.  About Tracy L. W. Poff Tracy L. W. Poff is a student of Life whose work in the world is to infuse everyday living with the light of divine context. She holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School, and an MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. Straddling the worlds of intellect and intuition, Tracy is a soul-centered guide whose quest and teaching is to know thyself. She is currently a Ph.D. student in the Transpersonal Psychology program at Sofia University in Palo Alto, California, and the focus of her doctoral research is medical intuition, also known as medical clairvoyance. Medical intuition is a perceptual skill that uses non-local awareness, or extrasensory perception, to assess health conditions of another person. The phenomenon of medical intuition is a fresh area of study within academics and through her work, Tracy hopes to deepen understanding and raise awareness of our intuitive capacity as human beings. Sopha Rush is an author, online influencer and encourager, and professional promise proclaimer. Her book 100 Days of Living Deeply Rooted is such an encouraging word for life in the trenches of trying to unpack past narratives about yourself, believing what God says is true about you, and learning to trust Him more wherever you are walking in life. In our conversation today, Sopha shares a little bit of her family's powerful story of fleeing the Cambodian genocide and starting their family in Chicago. Her Mom became a single parent after a tragedy at a very young age, and she and her siblings grew up under the umbrella of incredible strength, and resilience, but also so much grief. There is much to unpack growing up as the helper when you become a parent, isn't there? Learning to find value in yourself and just being who you are, not what you have to offer, seeing the value in taking care of and holding space for yourself to just be but also to heal. Sopha shares about how God has met her in all of these places, showing her what a good and trustworthy Father He truly is, and how He heals and redeems, and when we are deeply rooted in Him, we can come to know Him and find life. I felt like this was a message for those who need to know the heart of God is for them. The wrestling of standards of the world, and feeling like you are never enough, and those who struggle to understand who God is and who He is not. Our deep fears that came from how we grow up, and how we misunderstood Him, can hold us back from seeing who He has always been. Take the risk, friends. There is so much life, goodness, and hope for you in Him. If that's you today, I hope you know that you matter, and your story matters.   Connecting with Sopha: Book: 100 Days of Living Deeply Rooted Facebook Instagram (Living Deeply Rooted) Instagram 2 (Sopha's!) Fran Braga Mininger is a writer, author, content provider, and creator of The Years Beyond Youth.com. She writes about an era in a woman's life that can be exciting, engaging, and vibrant despite or perhaps because of, what comes with age. Her work has been featured on Sixty and Me, Ruminate Magazine, KQED Radio, She Rose Revolution, Changing Aging, and other online and printed publications.   Fran retired around 59 years young and for the first few months, it was fun to have all the freedom and to be able to do what you wanted. She started to feel restless and wondered, what comes next?  It was at that time that Fran went into therapy as she found it was a bigger transition than what she could manage on her own.  Her therapist told her, “ this is the next stage in your life, and it's up to you to create it! “  Fran took that message to heart and began the process of waking up every morning at  5 am and sat at her computer to write!  She found that writing was very fulfilling and she was finding interest in the things it was being revealed.  Most of what was being written was coming from a place that she hadn't processed in her mind.   During encounters with friends, Fran began to share her writing and they encourage her to share her important messages with others.  She then started a writer's Facebook page where women came and enjoyed her writings.  This then progressed to submitting her writings to other publications for women. Fran also has her blog and feels that she is on a great journey!  Fran shares that a helpful piece of advice she received from her therapist was, slow down, don't be so hard on yourself, what you want will come!  Say YES to a lot more things! I know when I am working with clients in the self-exploration process, I encourage them to say YES and be open to new experiences as you never know where they will lead and who you may meet!   I ask Fran about what it was like to be so vulnerable in putting her writing out in public as a lot of time, she was writing about herself!  She shares how she participated in a writers group and that experience in sharing and what an impact that had on her life.  The feedback she received from the group, helped her to keep moving on to the next thing!  Every time she would release something it would be more personal than it was the last time.  The comments that she gets back through her work are so rewarding and fulfilling and she knows from those comments that she is making a difference.   The reason why Fran gets up at 4 am to write is because she wants to share!  And the number one message she wants to share with the woman over 40 is that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.  There is a whole tribe of us out there doing the same.  You just need to take one step at a time!  While we are discussing Fran's work, I ask her about a recent article:  Living Deeply, and ask her what living deeply in your life means to her.  She shares that she noticed at one point, she was having a lot of superficial conversations and that her writing was deep but she wasn't having conversations on that level.  During that year, she started to be more vulnerable and have more truthful conversations with the people she trusted.  When she found that people were resistant or didn't want her to change then she let go of those relationships. For Fran, it's part of the growing process.  It's reflection, introspection, and spending time with yourself.  I invite you all to visit Fran's blog and become a part of her community!  Her writings will inspire you and cause you to reflect on your own journey.    Resources and Links Connect with Fran Braga Meininger  Fran's Article  Living Deeply  Fran's Article  Wooden Spoons of Comfort  Connect with Deborah Voll Take The Midlife Quiz Passion and Purpose Digital Workbook Book Your Spot for the Free 60 minute Clarity Session here

Melissa Wood courageously shares many personal trials that she has endured and the importance of living a life deeply rooted in faith.   Reflecting on scripture, and her personal experiences, she proposes a four-step plan in preparing yourself for the storms of life.   "Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides.  You know under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors.  So don't try to get out of anything prematurely.  Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way."  James 1:2-4 MSG   "My prayer for you is that you come to live deeply rooted in your faith as I have learned to do.  Take the time now, while the storm is at bay, to plan, prepare and practice for your next storm.  Build your faith in the one, who when you seek him, will answer you and deliver you, from all your fears.  Jesus Christ is our living hope!"  -Melissa Wood   Thank you, Melissa, for sharing this beautiful testimony!

Robert Atkinson takes us on a thoughtful and rewarding mythic journey that is equal parts inward and universal. What happens when a contemplative heart uncovers timeless patterns as they unfold in life? 1969, was a year that shaped a generation with the lunar landing and Woodstock. The archetypal lessons gleaned are just as relevant today as they were 50 years ago. Listen in as Atkinson shares his Year of Living Deeply.

WIFEM—Instruction Living Deeply is our 2012 year theme. Enough with splashing in the shallows! Dive in deeply with Jesus. No more spectators! Get in the water. No more Christians in name only! Be a disciple. As we invite people into the membership of our church today, we remind ourselves of three simple commitments we ask every person in our church to make: Worship consistently Meet in a small group regularly (Sunday School, weekday) Serve where God has given you a heart of compassion Last week, we began a series dealing with the 5 purposes of the church. The church will fulfill those purposes when we all do our part in those purposes. The goofy acronym WIFEM means: Worship Instruction Fellowship Evangelism Mission Today we look seriously at the I—Instruction. This happens best in small groups or 1-to-1 Bible studies. Here is where disciples are made. Are you plugged in here? If not, hear this—you’re either growing or dying. Choose life! If we don’t make time for Instruction so that we can learn, how will we ever be ready for the call of 1 Peter 3:15? “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqxchDcEoHs&feature=g-upl&context=G2e2630fAUAAAAAAABAA WIFEM Of all the goofy things I’ve seen, WIFEM has got to rank high on the list. WIFEM is an acronym for the 5 major purposes of the church. And it’s just goofy enough that it actually works in helping us remember! W orship I nstruction F ellowship E vangelism M issions In planning for 2012, the Church Council has embraced this excellent (slightly off-beat!) model for organizing and implementing our goals for this year. Everybody serves in the particular WIFEM area where they have passion and gifts.

Dear Friends Thích Phước Tịnh, known to the Sangha as the Venerable, here offers a wonderful and direct talk on living deeply as a human being, going inward to find deep meaning in your life, and so transcending happiness and suffering, fortune and misfortune. This dharma talk was offered for Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year, and leads us toward renewal in our life and in our practice.  We offer a deep bow of gratitude to Sister Dang Nghiem for offering a wonderful translation of this talk.  We are delighted to announce that for the first time the Venerable’s dharma talks are available in a book. Be Like a Tree, Zen Talks by Thích Phước Tịnh is a collection of the Venerable’s uniquely practical and inspiring talks, helping us in our practice with non-fear, recognizing our thoughts and feelings, creating space in our lives, loving and being loved, cultivating our spirituality, and tasting the enjoyment of our own lives. The talks were compiled by Order if Interbeing member Karen Hilsberg, and the book is available at lulu.com and amazon.com.   Please enjoy these offerings, and may there be renewal in your every mindful breath.
