“Lodging refers to the use of a short-term dwelling, usually by renting the living space or sometimes through some other arrangement. People who travel and stay away from home for more than a day need lodging for sleep, rest, food, safety, shelter from cold temperatures or rain, storage of luggage and access to common household functions.[1] Lodging is a form of the sharing economy. Lodging is done in a hotel, motel, hostel, or inn, a private home (commercial, i.e. a bed and breakfast, a guest house, a vacation rental, or non-commercially, as in certain homestays or the home of friends), in a tent, caravan/campervan (often on a campsite). Lodgings may be self-catering, whereby no food is provided, but cooking facilities are available. Lodging is offered by an owner of real property or a leasehold estate, including the hotel industry, hospitality industry, real estate investment trusts, and owner-occupancy houses. Lodging can be facilitated by an intermediary such as a travel website.” “In law, a dwelling (also known as a residence, abode or domicile) is a self-contained unit of accommodation used by one or more households as a home - such as a house, apartment, mobile home, houseboat, recreational vehicle, or other "substantial" structure. The concept of a dwelling has significance in relation to search and seizure, conveyancing of real property, burglary, trespass, and land-use planning.” These complete sentences describe the rest of the lodging part of my future. This explains the rest of my reasons my confirmed bachelor, pet-free, child-free, living alone primarily, very rarely having sex, and very rarely dating life. The one where we discuss Beorn & berzerkers & eagles & Russian novels and what a queer thing man is, what a queer thing language is, and what one has to do with the other. And also totemistic bear spirits. Did Tolkien read Dostoevsky? The protagonist in Dostoevsky's “The Double” is a fellow named Golyadkin (Голядкин); a neurotic individual on the verge of a nervous breakdown who has conversations with himself very similar to Gollum/Smeagol in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". Coincidence? Golyadkin debaters with himself, Everything, apparently, and even nature itself, seemed up in arms against Mr. Golyadkin; but he was still on his legs and unconquered; he felt that he was unconquered. He was ready to struggle. he rubbed his hands with such feeling and such energy when he recovered from his first amazement that it could be deduced from his very air that he would not give in. yet the danger was imminent; it was evident; Mr. Golyadkin felt it; but how to grapple with it, with this danger? - that was the question. the thought even flashed through Mr. Golyadkin's mind for a moment, "After all, why not leave it so, simply give up? Why, what is it? Why, it's nothing. I'll keep apart as though it were not I," thought Mr. Golyadkin. "I'll let it all pass; it's not I, and that's all about it; he's separate too, maybe he'll give it up too; he'll hang about, the rascal, he'll hang about. He'll come back and give it up again. Than's how it will be! I'll take it meekly. And, indeed, where is the danger? Come, what danger is there? I should like any one to tell me where the danger lies in this business. It is a trivial affair. An everyday affair. . . ." Tolkien's Library: An Annotated Checklist by Oronzo Cilli might give answer to this if the good professor had the Russian novel on his shelf (either in Russian or in translation as Tolkien new the Slavic language well). More likely, though is that It is from Old Norse. In The Annotated Hobbit with annotations by Douglas Anderson, Anderson claims that Gollum is from the Old Norse gull meaning Gold, and an inflected form of this is gollum meaning; gold, treasure or something precious. In the oldest manuscripts it is spelled goll. One inflected form would be gollum, 'gold, treasure, something precious.' It can also mean 'ring,' as is found in the compound word fingr-gull, 'finger-ring.'" As for Beorn, Tolkien's original name for this character was “Medwed” (Russian/Slavic: “medved” = “bear”) - which indicates Tolkien knew Slavic. So the question is still up for debate: did Tolkien read Dostoevsky?
Wherein I read Chapter 7 of the Hobbit

I’m one of those people who, when the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their wedding date, immediately thought: “Why would you want to get married on the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution?” That’s what May 19 means to us in Anne Boleyn fandom. That and one more thing, at least to me: 19 May is also the date Anne’s daughter Elizabeth was released from the Tower. So how did the two women come to share that fateful day at the Tower? Anne Boleyn's 1533 coronation celebrations would last four days and include a triumphant arrival at the Tower of London. Once she arrived at the Tower, Anne was greeted by heralds, great officers of state, and finally by the King himself. The Queen’s apartments, now gone, were located in the innermost ward of the Tower, between the White Tower and the main curtain wall. Then on Saturday, 31 May Anne processed from the Tower to Westminster for her coronation. As Anne left the Tower in glory no one could have imagined the events that would bring her back just three years later. On 19 May 1536, Anne left the Queen’s Lodgings in the Tower for the last time. She had worried she would be put into a dungeon when she arrived on 2 May; she was not, but the royal apartments had been little comfort as she had watched her life unravel. That morning she walked past the Great Hall and through Coldharbour Gate, the remains of which can still be seen today. When she passed along the west side of the White Tower, she saw the scaffold. A single stroke and it was over. Anne’s body was placed in a makeshift coffin, by legend an arrow case, and buried in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula. After the Wyatt rebellion, Mary I was certain her half-sister was guilty. On 18 March, 1554, Mary sent Elizabeth to the Tower. Elizabeth is described as playing the moment of her arrival at the Tower to its fullest effect, sitting down on the steps and when encouraged to come in out of the rain replying “It is better sitting here than in a worse place.” Declaring herself the truest subject in the land, she entered the Tower. On 19th of May, the soldiers knocked at Elizabeth’s door. She would have known the date, of course. She would have known how her half-sister hated her mother, and how much she would love to have Elizabeth follow in Anne’s footsteps to the executioner. Instead, Elizabeth was taken from the Tower on 19 May 1554. Guarded by Bedingfield’s men, Elizabeth set off for Woodstock. On 17 November 1558, Mary I died. Word came to Elizabeth at Hatfield. According to legend, she sank to her knees and quoted the scripture in Psalms: “This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” After spending two days being celebrated and honored at the Tower, Elizabeth left for her procession to Westminster. According to Sir John Hayward, Elizabeth remarked, “Some have fallen from being princes in this land to be prisoners in this place. I am raised from being a prisoner in this place to be a prince in this land.” I think the day she left the Tower, Elizabeth began her journey toward becoming the Queen her mother would have wished her to be.

Discussion of The Hobbit, Chapter Seven Join Maggie and Cam as they encounter yet another new creature, Beorn! He's hairy and grim and maybe a way for Tolkien to talk to us about disappointing father figures. This episode explores the chapter's many structural echoes and the value of callbacks. We also debate the power of repeated foreshadowing [hi, Mirkwood] and once again bemoan the lack of dwarvish character development. Cam continues to reference Winnie-the-Pooh, but this time he has evidence. Have an observation, comment, or theory on this episode? If you're itching for an out-of-the-way bucolic escape this summer, with a hefty serving of history, you'd be hard-pressed to beat the Waitaki Valley's Campbell Park Estate, for its sheer dramatic backstory, spanning pioneering spirit and a dark side, and a setting of smashing distinction. It’s a back-of-beyond bolt-hole, in which so many cachet destinations are virtually on your doorstep, including Oamaru, Wanaka, Dansey’s Pass and Omarama, not to mention the gems of the Waitaki Valley. It’s only been in the past year or so that Campbell Park Estate has been reopened for accommodation, at exceptionally good-value rates. Lodgings are provided in the village-like assortment of 32 character homes and cottages, boasting three and four bedrooms, which have been tastefully renovated and modernised by the current owners. The polished rimu floors and swathes of wood panelling are spectacular. Some homes are built in Oamaru stone. You may be aware that property passed into Chinese hands a couple of years ago, with the former Mainzeal director, Richard Yan, becoming the sole owner of the 32-hectare estate. With a baronial-style castle and stables built in 1876, an old jailhouse, fruit orchards and field garden adjoining a working farm and vineyard, a 200-seat restaurant, indoor gym, tennis courts, swimming pool, a grade-seven aircraft runway, a subterranean cave and its own village - Campbell Park Estate looms like a mini-township in the rolling North Otago countryside. Needless to say, it has limitless development possibilities. For the unwitting motorist, who inadvertently strays down Special School Road, from Duntroon, it’s quite the revelation to stumble upon this property, laid out in the style of an old English estate, shuffle into view. But first, how did it all begin? William Dansey, the pioneering Otago runholder, purchased and lived on the Otekaieke sheep and cattle station, that would later be named Campbell Park Estate in 1857. Dansey is chiefly credited for establishing an alpine trail through from North Otago to Central Otago, his name being immortalised in Dansey’s Pass, which scales the Kakanui Mountains to connect the Waitaki Valley with the mighty Maniototo. The intrepid runholder built the first house on the estate in 1861, “Dansey’s Hut” which is one of North Otago’s first recorded buildings and is still on the property today. As I admired his rustic Oamaru stone shack, pangs of melancholy surged through me, as I reflected on the sudden deaths of his two young children. They died after eating poisonous tutu and they are buried on the hill above his cottage.Shortly afterwards, Dansey sold the station, shifting to Oamaru where he apparently became the first man in the town to receive a pension. The property was bought by Robert Campbell, fresh from Eton and from wealthy Scottish stock, who snapped up a vast tracts of surrounding farmland. Otekaieke Station stretched virtually from Kurow to the Maerewhenua River at Duntroon, running back over to Dansey’s Pass. Campbell imported the finest merino ewes from Victoria, Australia, and rambouillet (Spanish merino) rams, along with quality cattle, to stock his land. You can still see where the Campbell’s quarried limestone from the hills on the estate for many of their estate buildings. Here’s a fascinating nugget of history: Limestone from his quarry at Otekaieke was used as ballast in ships making the return journey from New Zealand to Australia, and much of Circular Quay in Sydney was built out of these limestone blocks. The two-storey homestead, which is still on the property, was subsequently deemed insufficient by Campbell and his wife Emma, so a monumental construction project was commissioned. In 1868, he shipped over a massive workforce of Scottish craftsmen along with materials from Scotland and Italy, to build New Zealand’s first “Castle.”This 35-room baronial mansion, awash in decorative touches, was hewn out of the valley’s locally-sourced limestone. You can't find a more centrally located inn or hotel in Annapolis than Gibson's Lodgings of Annapolis which is tucked away on Prince George's Street just feet from the water and the United States Naval Academy. We sit down with John Lauer who is the owner (and was a partner since 1988) to talk about what makes them different from the rest. With a 3 buildings dating back to 1766, we had to talk about the ghosts; and in a more modern tale--that time John wanted to put in a small swimming pool! Have a listen! They say there’s no place like home - and in the case of the homes we discuss this week, THANK GOD! We delve into the World’s Worst Lodgings with our guest: no less than a BAFTA nominated screenwriter, stand-up, sketch comedian, actor, author - the multi-talented and multi-vowel-possessing Nat Luurtsema. Nat helps us face up to some home truths as we wade through the murky depths of our former university dwellings. We go exploring a poisonous granny-flat, Ben’s Edinburgh Festival digs, Barry’s showery sex life, Megan Fox’s menagerie and a few horrible hermitages. Lynn Thomas, Executive Director of Community Lodgings and Jasmine Witcher, Director of Development join us today to talk about their work in Alexandria, VA which works to lift people out of homelessness and help them transition into stable housing and self-sufficiency. Lack of affordable housing is a growing problem around the country and it is particularly bad in the Washington, DC area so Community Lodgings provides a way for families to live in an apartment, rather than a shelter, while going through their very successful program. Working with dedicated caseworkers, the clients learn budgeting skills, receive help getting out of debt, and resolve other barriers to transition to full housing. Jasmine Witcher shares her persuasive "Ask" which is key in fundraising to make the work of Community Lodgings possible. Lynn Thomas joined Community Lodgings as Executive Director in January 2014 bringing 30 years of nonprofit leadership experience, particularly in grants administration, affordable housing and supportive housing management. She is a certified housing counselor, holds a Master's of Human Services from Lincoln University, PA and is an active member of the Governing Board of the Alexandria Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness. Jasmin brings over a decade of experience in the non-profit sector, specializing in housing and homelessness issues. In her role at Community Lodgings, Jasmin oversees all aspects of a comprehensive development program to provide long-term funding stability for the organization. Community Lodgings is an Alexandria, VA based nonprofit established in 1987 with a mission to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence and self-sufficiency through transitional housing, affordable housing and youth education programs
