With The Economist headlining – “Is this the death of Crypto?” and the New York Times opinion piece citing Tulip Fever – again – we wonder if these commentators of traditional finance may well be telling us that we are now at the bottom of the market. The reasons for the SBF / FTX failure are due to fraud, misappropriation of customer assets, over leverage, poor accounting, lack of transparency, etc none of which are cryptocurrency or decentralisation failures.

Tulipmania has stuck in our collective memory as one of the biggest economic calamities to ever strike the western world. The popular narrative holds that in 17th century Holland, homes were mortgaged, reputations were ruined, and livelihoods were lost—all so that tulip bulbs could be bought at higher and higher prices. And when the “bubble” burst, chaos ensued. In fact, the truth was far less sensational. But contemporary 17th-century artworks can shed some light on the real Tulip Fever, and perhaps give us some clues as to why Tulipmania continues to hold such power over our notions of the Dutch Golden Age. The existence of market bubbles are not unique to our modern world. They've existed in the past and possibly the first market bubble involved the sale of Tulips. How exactly did the situation lead to a bubble that eventually popped and is it any different from the bubbles we are aware of today? Follow us on twitter @moreabstract Outro by Eric Pierce
Phil and Jake are joined once again by Andy Granelli (The Distillers, Seized Up) to pump up the sandwich bandwidth by ranking the grilled cheese sandwich, the tuna melt, and the turkey / bacon / swiss sandwich on the List of Every Damn Thing.Find Andy on Twitter (@AndyGranelli) and Instagram (AndyGranelli). If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Phil claims that cat names don't really matter because cats are mostly called "kitty" anyways and they're indifferent to any name you give them. You should just name your cat a word that you enjoy saying into the air. The Marvel superhero Wolverine will sometimes go undercover by wearing an eyepatch and calling himself “Patch”. This strains credulity because he has the most distinctive hairstyle ever. It's almost as if it's not real. Lots of other types of sandwiches and sandwich-type foods come up in the course of this episode, including cheese sandwiches, melts, quesadillas, crab sandwiches and of course shit on a shingle. The various sandwich fixins that get discussed include rye bread, pickles, onion rings, shredded lettuce and the delicious mouth-wrecking Dutch crunch bread. The grilled cheese sandwich that Jake made in preparation for this episode was Atika cheese from Tomales Farmstead Creamery on Josey Baker Country Bread. He made it in his Breville air-frying toaster oven. For the record, ”Atika” means “two” in the language of the Coast Miwok people (Jake couldn't remember the name of this local Native Bay Area tribe). Robert's Western World in Nashville is Jake's favorite place to get a grilled cheese sandwich. The grill is right there behind the bar, and they totally don't do the grilled cheeses on the same grill where they do the meat. In-N-Out grilled cheese (animal style) is usually pretty good too if it's fresh off the grill, and Waffle House's ain't bad in a pinch either. The place in New York City that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches seems to now be a national chain called Melt Shop. We shout-out some other sandwich purveyors during the episode, such as Nick's Rockaway in Pacifica, CA, the Adeline Market deli in Burlingame, CA, The Bottle Shop in Ukiah, CA, and Woodhouse Fish Company & Molinari Delicatessen in San Francisco. Main Street Wine & Cheese– also in Ukiah, which is itself of course in Mendocino County– is sadly now either a taqueria or a Quizno's. Jake couldn't remember the fancy French-derived word for an open-faced sandwich. It's “tartine”. Recipe websites are some of the worst because to game search engines they put the recipes down below and don't let you just scroll to the bottom. They then put a long story about themselves at the top and a lot of javascript ads so that when you're trying to make the recipe, the content keeps moving. It's awful and they should be ashamed. SFgate.com is similarly maddening. We continue the ongoing bread & butter pickle controversy that Jade Puget started back in Episode 78. Tuna on pizza is very good, it gets crispy! Here's an example on a recipe website that's not that bad. Are magic erasers made from crab shells? No they're not. Phil was wrong again! Steve1989MREinfo is the guy Phil mentioned who unboxes old (sometimes extremely old) military rations and eats them. Canadians wear poppies on Remembrance Day (November 11th). Tulip mania is a classic case– maybe the classic case– of a speculative bubble. It's been thoroughly documented elsewhere but Phil enjoyed the movie Tulip Fever which takes you inside the tulip futures auctions in a way an economics textbook can't do. Hetch-Hetchy water is the best water. People who live in San Francisco get it right out of their taps. All the news article headlines about Andy's bandmate Chuck Platt getting hit by a car cite his other band, not Seized Up (the one he's in with Andy). We're glad to hear Chuck is recovering nicely. It's summertime and a new month! And that means It's time for a new mini series: Movies that Embody the Summer Feeling. Skye and Shelby are joined by guest Jamie Lewis to discuss this Channing Tatum and Adam Driver heist movie. Skye finally gets a chance to talk about Tulip Fever, but restrains herself. What does this movie have to do with George R.R. Martin? And why is Hillary Swank there? Does Adam Driver prefer beer or cocktails? And on this week's What the Plot, Jamie guesses the plot to Sunset Boulevard. The good, the bad, and the cauliflower on this week's episode. Follow Jamie on twitter here.
*A Scotsman Travel Book of the Year* Why the Dutch Are Different is the internationally best-selling portrait of a fascinating people and the country that was the setting for Tulip Fever. Stranded at Schiphol airport, Ben Coates called up a friendly Dutch girl he'd met some months earlier. He stayed for dinner. Actually, he stayed for good. In the first audiobook to consider the hidden heart and history of the Netherlands from a modern perspective, the author explores the length and breadth of his adopted homeland and discovers why one of the world's smallest countries is also so significant and so fascinating. It is a self-made country, the Dutch national character shaped by the ongoing battle to keep the water out from the love of dairy and beer to the attitude to nature and the famous tolerance. Ben Coates investigates what makes the Dutch the Dutch, why the Netherlands is much more than Holland and why the colour orange is so important. Along the way, he reveals why they are the world's tallest people and have the best carnival outside Brazil. He learns why Amsterdam's brothels are going out of business, who really killed Anne Frank and how the Dutch manage to be richer than almost everyone else despite working far less. He also discovers a country which is changing fast, with the Dutch now questioning many of the liberal policies which made their nation famous. A personal portrait of a fascinating people, a sideways history and an entertaining travelogue, Why the Dutch Are Different is the story of an Englishman who went Dutch. And loved it.

Philippa Gregory has a knack for helping us revisit the past and experience what it might have been like to live through the intrigue of the Gunpowder Plot, the heady chaos of the Tulip Fever, or the plotting and conniving for power within the Tudor court. Most notably, she often allows us to view these iconic moments in history through the eyes of the women who observed, survived, and influenced them. In this frantic, romantic episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we take a historical journey through the 2017 film, Tulip Fever, directed by Justin Chadwick and starring Christoph Waltz, Judi Dench, and Zach Galifianakis. Tubi is an app that is well known for scraping off and using the kinds of films that get stuck to the bottom of the narrative shoe like a piece of bubble gum. This begs the question: what if the gum is old? Like, period piece old? What happens then?

In a slight departure from our usual format, four students of art history take us through the lives of four individuals who inhabit different roles during the period known as the Dutch Golden Age, spanning the 17th century in Holland, and give us a sense of what it might have been like to have been an artists--or live on the edges of the art establishment--during this time. A shorty but a goodie. This week we attempt to remember the time we watched 2017's Tulip Fever, starring Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz, some guy named Dane DeHaan, and most importantly, Dame Judi Dench. The original episode we recorded was lost because of bad audio issues, so we decided just to drink and rely on Wikipedia and our memories! It's wild!

Deborah Moggach, the author behind such hugely popular novels as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Ex-Wives and Tulip Fever, is interviewed here by writer Cathy Rentzenbink. Download to hear them chat about Deborah's latest book The Carer, as well as families, marriages and writing.
Novelist and screenwriter Deborah Moggach whose eighteen novels include Heartbreak Hotel, Tulip Fever and These Foolish Things - made into the hit film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - talks to Stig Abell about her new novel The Carer, a poignant story about age, sibling rivalry and having to grow up – at last. Stig is joined by Jordan Erica Webber to play a new computer game based on the world of Hamlet. In Elsinore, released later this month, the player takes on the role of Ophelia and quests to save the lives of the characters and change the course of the story. We ask if an attempt to tell the story of the play in an interactive way bears fruit. The acclaimed Belgian theatre director Ivo van Hove talks about staging Ayn Rand’s 1943 novel The Fountainhead at Manchester International Festival. The adaptation, like the book, tells the story of Howard Roark, an architect who refuses to compromise on his “perfect” designs. US president Donald Trump is a fan of The Fountainhead and the home secretary Sajid Javid revealed during the Conservative leadership debates that he re-reads it once a year. We’ll ask what this production has to tell us about liberalism, politics and individualism today. Following reports that while watching The Voice Kids a woman’s window shattered when a competitor sang a high note, Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford, tells Front Row whether the human voice really can break glass. Presenter: Stig Abell Producer: Hilary Dunn

She tells Georgina Godwin about Hollywood, writing and how her mother went to prison for attempted murder.
For our first ever live episode, from the London Book Fair, we are delighted to present the author and screenwriter Deborah Moggach. Deborah wrote the bestsellers The Ex-Wives, Tulip Fever (made into a film of the same name), These Foolish Things (made into the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Heartbreak Hotel. Deep within a hidden laboratory located directly under the bargain bin of a Best Buy, Joe and Logan have crafted the most sinister of creatures from the dumbest of movies. This week, stupidity rises to new levels as the boys combine "Woody Woodpecker" and "Tulip Fever". We know what you're thinking: clearly a half-animated lesbian ecological revenge thriller, right? No?? Oh, maybe that's just a "Joe and Logan" kinda thing. Ken and Kendra discuss Oscar not-favorite Tulip Fever, why Peri Gilpin is a really great Bed and Breakfast owner on Station 19, the word of the day, and the show's new Instagram, @degreesofperi. Tulip Fever has Judi Dench, Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz, the guy from Valerian, and Cara Delevingne. It has a lot going on and is on Netflix. Matt Damon blir nedkrymp till en lilleputte av Rolf Lassgård i Downsizing. Colin Farell riskerar att bli en hummer i The Lobster. Alicia Vikander tvingas föda barn åt Christoph Waltz i Tulip Fever. One of most difficult aspects of engaging in sex work is dealing with the judgement of friends, family and the general public if and when you decide to come out. With our technological advances, it's easier than ever for internet trolls to hide behind an anonymous persona and attack strangers through multiple platforms. It's nightmarish and it's been going on since the dawn of man. During the 16th Century in Venice, Italy, courtesan Veronica Franco endured public shaming that attempted to strip away her status as a prolific poet and author. The ladies weigh out pros and cons of coming out publicly AND stress the importance of fucking dudes that look the same and taking probiotics! The fulcrum for 74 is an anthology called XX which showcases only female horror directors and has the magic number of four which Tales of the Crypt proved is the proper number for an anthology so there is plenty of hope that at least one of them will be good. Get Out is a thriller horror movie and appears to be a guess who's coming to dinner racial tension movie from the mind of Peele from Key & Peele, God knows we love racial tension on this show so the excitement is palpable. Tulip Fever rounds out the lineup and really strikes a chord with Daniel and transforms him during episode 74 as he dives into this offering written by Tom Stoppard, the famous playwright who brought us Shakespeare in Love. This month World Book Club talks about the acclaimed international bestseller Tulip Fever with its British author Deborah Moggach. It's 1630s Amsterdam, and tulip fever has seized its inhabitants. Everywhere men are seduced by the exotic flower. But for wealthy merchant Cornelis Sandvoort it is his young and beautiful wife Sophie that he desires above all, hoping that she will bring him the joy that not even his considerable fortune can buy. An heir. He commissions a talented and dashing young portraitist to immortalise them on canvas, but as the portrait unfolds, so does a passion that breeds a grand deception – and as the lies multiply, events move toward a thrilling and tragic climax. Deborah Moggach talks about her bestselling novel Tulip Fever, a story of love, greed and betrayal in 17th Century Amsterdam. Artist Jan van Loos falls for his married subject Sophia during 'tulipomania'. Prices for the recently introduced flower reached extraordinarily high levels - one bulb could fetch thousands of pounds - and then suddenly collapsed. James Naughtie and a group of invited readers discuss the story and its resonance with 21st century boom and bust economies, as well as the paintings that inspired Deborah to write the novel. September's Bookclub choice : Dark Star Safari by Paul Theroux Producer : Dymphna Flynn.
Audrey Niffenegger discusses her bestselling novel The Time Traveler's Wife with James Naughtie. It's a romantic story about a man - Henry - with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage to Clare. The book opens when they meet in a Chicago library, and they both understand that he is a time traveller. But Clare knows much more than this about him as he has not yet been to the times and places where they have met before, and she remembers him from when she was just six years old. He falls in love with her, as she has already with him, but his continuing unavoidable absences time travelling - and then returning with increasing knowledge of their future - makes things ever more difficult for Clare. Audrey Niffenegger explains how she created a set of rules for the book, such as there would be no sex between the couple before Clare reaches 18; and how Henry's disorder is genetic rather than magical, meaning that when he time travels he arrives naked and with no money or useful possessions. She also talks about the morality of her tale - the consequences of Henry's criminal behaviour, and how she dealt with a male character who effectively moulds the character of Clare as she grows up. Recorded at BBC Broadcasting House in London, Bookclub with Audrey Niffenegger includes questions from the studio audience. August's Bookclub choice : Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach Producer : Dymphna Flynn.
