On the 3rd of February 237 years ago under a great tree in what was to be known later as Circular Quay, the very first sermon was preached on Australian soil. The message was by a Minister called Richard Johnson and he spoke from Psalm 116 - "What can I offer the Lord for all that He has done for me" Richard understood the impelling call of God over his life and we all face the challenge of moving forward into our destiny to see that great call fulfilled in our lives so we can bring the Gospel message all across this great nation of Australia.

Today, I've something exciting to share with you. You know how you get excited when a lost Beatle or Nirvana track is found, well the extraordinary Alexi Boyd uncovered the audio of a panel discussion from Sydney Xerocon PreXerocon 2023. I honestly thought I'd never hear it again, and then mid March she sent me a copy - making me a very happy podcaster cause I get to share it with you. The panel discussion was held at the beautiful Hinchcliff House at Circular Quay. Unfortunately the room was a little noisy on the day of the event. However much to my surprise the audio quality is really quite good.     The topic for discussion was “Unravelling the future of AccounTech”.   If you are a regular listener you will know, I value bringing diversity to these tech conversations: The moderator Alexi Boyd ran a BAS and Bookkeeping business for 8 years. She is the Radio Show host of Small Biz Matters and now works in policy strategy and government relations. Her background led her to take the conversation in an interesting direction, consumer data rights and restrictions on data and innovation and the differences between data protection laws in Europe, UK, and Australia.   This event was the first time Sabby Gill, the new Dext formerly Receipt Bank CEO, had spoken in Australia. Sabby had literally just got off the plane. London based Sabby Gill brought an overseas perspective, as well as his 35 years in the UK technology sector. Aly Garrett is a modern, technology savvy accountant, from South Australia. She represented accountants, their small business clients, and living outside the major Australian cities, brought a regional perspective to the conversation.   Roger Gregg brought that unique energy that comes with being a Fintech founder, plus his expensive knowledge of the hospitality and brewing industry, which certainly flavoured the conversation.    I shall add in some recent relevant news, congratulations are in order, 10 months after recording this, it has been announced that the Access Group Has Entered Into an Agreement to Acquire Pioneering AP Automation Provider, Lightyear    Let me fill you in on a bit of a backstory. The Gregg brothers were one of the original App partners, with their solution InvitBox. I'm thinking within the first ten years? InvitBox won Xero emerging app partner in 2013. Then in May 2014 Intuit acquired InvitBox. The very blue boys turned green overnight. Several years later, in quite an unprecedented move, they bought InvitBox back from Intuit for a single dollar! And relaunched as LightYear.    Here we are ten years later, and they have sold again, this time to The Access Group.    Read more here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7194623580830105601/  https://heathersmithsmallbusiness.com/2024/06/06/unravelling-the-future-of-accountech-sydney-xerocon-2023/ Contact details: Alexi Boyd https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexiboyd/  Small Biz Matters https://smallbizmatters.com.au/  Aly Garrett https://www.linkedin.com/in/alygarrett/  Sabby Gill https://www.linkedin.com/in/sabbygill/ Roger Gregg https://www.linkedin.com/in/rogergregg/  Accounting Apps newsletter: http://HeatherSmithAU.COM Accounting Apps Mastermind: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XeroMasterMind  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/HeatherSmithAU/  YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/ANISEConsulting  X: https://twitter.com/HeatherSmithAU

SUDDENLY: a Frank Sinatra podcast

Frank Sinatra's first Australian visit in 1955 followed shortly after the repeal of decades-old laws preventing "coloured" musicians, or any foreign musicians, from performing in the country. The tour was part of the initial run of the now-legendary "Big Shows" put on by mysterious American promoter Lee Gordon, who took advantage of the newly-liberated times to bring acts like Ella Fitzgerald, Johnnie Ray, Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong to Australia for the first time. But how did we end up with such racist, bizarre laws in the first place? To understand that, we need to go back to the 1928 Australian tour of an African-American jazz band called Sonny Clay's Coloured Idea, and unravel the elaborate conspiracy that faced them when they arrived. This week, we're examining Sinatra's 1955 Australian tour by putting it in its proper historical context - with a cliffhanger ending you won't see coming. Selected media discussed this week, with links: AI Frank Sinatra cover of the theme from "Five Nights at Freddy's." AI Eric Cartman cover of Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life." All three and their stalwart crews were involved in the operation to save bulk carrier Portland Bay after it lost power in stormy weather last month.Pacific Encounter's time in Sydney will also be of economic benefit to the city with local marine engineering and technical services coming on board and more than half a million kilograms of locally sourced produce being loaded to begin the ship's cruising program.Special thanks to Listener Garry in Sydney who sent in some incredible images of Encounter alongside in Circular Quay.Viking celebrates 25 years of award-winning explorationOn 5 Aug 23, Viking is celebrated the company's 25th anniversary. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future paid Scrooge a visit. We borrow that concept of three as we embark in search of haunted bars, ghost stories and energy centers with a New Year's Eve and/or New Year connection. Places we explore this episode include: Sydney, Australia - We check out two haunted hotels in the Rocks: The Australian Heritage Hotel and the Russel Hotel. Both aren't far from the Circular Quay, a great place to watch New Year's Eve fireworks in Sydney. London, England - We briefly examine the story of a ghost who some say jumps from Westminster Bridge as Big Ben rings in the New Year. Some even say it's Jack the Ripper... (Though that's doubtful.) Speaking of the infamous serial killer, we briefly check out a haunted pub he may have a connection to, The Ten Bells. We also visit the Grenadier, one of London's oldest and many say most haunted pubs.  Edinburgh, Scotland - It wouldn't be a proper New Year without checking out Hogmanay and a pub that proclaims itself Edinburgh's most haunted, the Banshee Labyrinth. New York City, New York - For NYE travelers, Times Square is often a priority destination. One of NYC's most luxurious and storied hotels is not far from Times Square, the Algonquin. NYC Ghosts shared that the Algonquin conducts a mini exorcism every New Year's Eve where staff dim the lights and march through the building banging pots and pans to try and ward off sinister spirits.  Nashville, Tennessee - This booming city is an up-and-comer NYE travel destination. Hank Williams Sr. died on New Year's Day. Not in Nashville, and years before Tootsie's Orchid Lounge ever opened. But some say the ghosts of the honky tonk's proprietor, Tootsie Bess, and the country music legend haunts the Broadway bar. Chicago, Illinois - Legend has it that a woman jumped from the 10th floor of the Drake Hotel on New Year's Eve. Some believe that may be the woman in red thought to haunt the hotel. Anchorage, Alaska - Another tormented woman who took her life on New Year's Eve can be found in the last stall on the left in the women's bathroom at the Captain Cook Hotel. Except, for her peace of mind and those using the facility, the possessive potty poltergeist's stall has been bolted shut from the inside to try and appease her restless --and sometimes expressive-- manifestations. Energy vortexes around the world - For those interested in ushering in the New Year with good vibrations, a visit to an energy vortex might be just the thing. We mention eight: Sedona, Arizona; Mount Shasta in California; Maui's Haleakalā Volcano in Hawai; Glastonbury and Stonehenge in England; Es Vedra off Ibizia's coast in Spain; the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt; and the Mayan Ruins in Tulum, Mexico. NOTE Because this episode mentions suicide, we feel it's important to stress that if you suspect someone you know is contemplating suicide, or you yourself are, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-272-8255. Iconic Ships 13: Thermopylae

In this episode we hear about Thermopylae, one of the most magnificent clipper-ships ever built, and some claim the finest of them all. In 1879, before her second wool voyage from Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald eulogised: 'The fastest and handsomest ship in the world is now lying at the Circular Quay loading for London, and those who take pleasure in seeing a rare specimen of naval architecture should avail themselves of the opportunity of doing so. Of course, we allude to the Thermopylæ, the celebrated Aberdeen clipper. [The] Thermopylæ has all the appearance of a yacht, and yet she carries a good cargo, is a beautiful sea boat, and stands up to her canvas well.' Built in Aberdeen and commissioned in 1868, but long over-shadowed in public recognition by her rival, Cutty Sark (a ship built specifically to out-pace her in the China tea trade but only once succeeded in so doing), Thermopylæ lives on as arguably the finest all-round clipper of them all.Clipper ships like Thermopylae were astonishing to behold, and were the culmination of centuries of refinements in sailing technology that led to some of the most beautiful and fastest merchant ships ever built. They revolutionised global trade tearing around the seas carrying tea, wool, luxury goods, and of course people as this era of migration changed the populations and economies of the world forever. Their heyday was short lived, however, as increasingly efficient steam engines and railways changed the way that goods were transported – all over again. To find out more, Dr Sam Willis speaks with Captain Peter King. Peter recently retired from the merchant shipping industry after over 62 years of continuous service in a wide range of maritime disciplines. In the 1980s, while serving as Managing Director of one of the Christian Salvesen group companies in Aberdeen, he developed an interest in the George Thompson Jnr's Aberdeen-based shipping enterprise leading to his researching and publishing the first definitive history of Thermopylæ. Dubbed the ‘Flying Pieman', he progressed from barman at Sydney's Hope & Anchor to making and selling meat pies around Hyde Park and Circular Quay.   He became famous for his extreme feats of “pedestrianism” – walking long distances in amazingly short times but as his athletic abilities faded, he took to using his reputation to attract customers, selling his pies and pastries on the streets of Sydney wearing a top hat decorated with brightly coloured ribbons.   Sadly, his eccentricity turned to mental instability and he was sent to the Liverpool asylum, where he died in 1873. My Friend Rod McCurdy and I were about to board a ferry to see some features of the Sydney area, when from about 100 yards away I spotted my George seated with his back against a fence, the Sydney Opera House across a span of water behind him, in his traditional aboriginal garb, sparsely dressed with clay powder turning his skin almost white. In front of him sat a 4 foot long didgeridoo. To donate to George and his music and art his PayPal account is  bee.sailor84@gmail.com The link to the popular video of George can be found here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTdD84wFwZ4&t=8s=========For more information about Thom Dharma Pollard:http://eyesopenproductions.com/For a free downloadable copy of A Course In Happiness:www.patreon.com/thehappinessquotientOur theme song, Happiness Jones, appears courtesy of The Wood Brothers. For more information about The Wood Brothers:https://www.thewoodbros.com/The Wood Brothers on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTvWKQovDZlLceuct1EEMMQHappiness Jones video can be seen here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKIoiVWwF5ASupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/thehappinessquotient)

There is no building in Sydney that has polarised opinions more than the Sirius apartments on Circular Quay – unless you include the Opera House, its architectural antithesis across the bay. After years of controversy, plans have been revealed and expressions of interest sought in what will be a revolutionary revamp of the former housing commission apartment block. You can read more about it the multi-million-dollar project here - and see a slideshow of the proposed revanp - but, naturally we also have our two cents worth here in the pod. LISTEN HERE After that, we talk about the developer who was the first to fall foul of the Sunset Clawbacks law – which we personally helped bring into being – and who has now gone bust (pause to be mentally carried shoulder-high around the room). You can read more about that HERE. And we follow up some fairly heated discussions on the Forum about feeding stray cats with news from the Guardian Online about how Chicago is putting 1,000 feral felines to work. Also from Chicago, there's this amazing video about how a cat has survived a leap from the fifth floor of a burning building.  As we say on the pod, don't mess with Chicago cats … TRANSCRIPT IN FULL Jimmy  0:00  Okay, we have a lot to get through today. We've got the sale of the Sirius; we've got a developer who has gone out of business. We've got cats! Sue  0:12  Great! Jimmy  0:14  So, we'd better get on with it. I'm Jimmy Thomson, I write the Flat Chat column for the Australian Financial Review. Sue  0:19  And I'm Sue Williams and I write about property for Domain. Jimmy  0:22   And this is the Flat Chat Wrap. [MUSIC] So, there seems to be a bit of a stoush about the Sirius building. Sue  0:45  The Sirius building, I think, has been in the news for a long, long time. I mean, they've been lots and lots of fights over it in the past,  over the heritage listing of the building. Lots of people love the building, because I think it's a fantastic example, of 70s brutalist architecture. Jimmy  1:00  So, for anybody who's not familiar with it (and we'll probably put a picture on the website), but if you're not familiar with it, it's the one as you're coming over the Harbour Bridge towards the city from North Sydney, it's on the left, and it looks like a stack of Lego blocks. Sue  1:21  I guess it does! It's on Cumberland Street and it just can't be missed, really. As I said, some people think it's a great icon of brutalist architecture, which is increasingly rare these days. Jimmy  1:32  Well, for the good reason that they keep knocking it down because it's ugly. Sue  1:35  Well, other people will think that the building is a really ugly eyesore. A lot of people thought the building should be demolished. Other people felt that the building should be retained, because it was built for public housing. About 200 people originally and they felt that they should be allowed to stay there. Jimmy  1:53  With the best views of the Opera House you'll ever see. Sue  1:57  Yes and other people  felt that, well, they just didn't deserve it really, I suppose and that rich people are the ones who could afford to live in such a fabulous harborside location and should be allowed to do so. Jimmy  2:11  Is it as polarizing and divisive?  Is it a case of maybe saying this was terrific that for 40 years, Housing Commission tenants could live there with these fabulous views, but Sydney has moved on. The money from the sale of that building (which is allegedly going to be put into public housing), can be put to much better use and house more people. Sue  2:37  But where is that public housing? It's probably way out in the suburbs and personally, I think it's wrong to keep cities  just for rich people. Cities should have a really vibrant, demographic; a huge diversity. That's what makes it culturally rich and if it just ends up (the inne...

It's 1998, Vernazza Italy, the world cup is playing on TV and the bar is packed with bustling international tourists. Stefano is 14 working at his cousins bar being taught the ropes. His first task is to collect everyone's order and bring them back to the bar. Stefano took a notepad and a pen, and one by one, he took everyone's orders in the bar and came back to his cousin with a massive list of drinks from everyone in the entire bar. His cousin shakes his head and realizes there's a lot of teaching to do. But for Stefano, he was hooked by the buzz of the bar and since then, has never forgotten that night.  Stefano was born in Vernazza, Italy and was surrounded by hospitality all his life. His father owned and ran a restaurant, and by 5 years old, Stefano was in the venue with a tray collecting empty glasses and plates to be cleaned. Fast forward to age 26, and Stefano had found his feet on Sydney shores where he decided to settle in and begin working in the CBD. He started immersing himself within the cocktail culture of Sydney, learning basics like the Lemon, Lime and Bitters and having people scream at him to have a 'wet pussy', but having no idea what that was, being taken aback the first few times. Stefano was forced to learn quick about both the drinks, and about 'shit people' so he says. Stefano soon began working for a hospitality company called 'Flavour', which had an island bar in the middle of Sydney Harbour called Cockatoo Island. Which was famous for it's wild nights, and unloading hundreds of drunk people off the Ferrys back at Circular Quay. Stefano recounts the incredible time they had a New Years Eve party watching the fireworks, which went on for so long, the bartenders had to sleep on the island overnight, then have a shower and get back to work the next day. Come to 2015, and Maybe Frank was in construction with a lot of hype around it and when it opened, this unique pizza and cocktail place has been packed ever since.  So busy in fact, that another Maybe Frank was opened in Randwick. After years of perfecting the pizza culture, Stefano Catino, along with co-owners Vince Lombardo and the creative director of Maybe Frank, Andrea Gualdi, set to step outside of the kitchen and pursue a passion project in the bar. After Andrea won the World Class Australian Bartender of the year in 2017, they knew it would happen sooner or later. In January 2019, the 1950's Hollywood inspired cocktail bar Maybe Sammy, was born and at the end of 2019 when it was announced as the 43rd best bar in the world and the best bar in Australia by the Worlds 50 Best... it was their busiest time on record. Recently in October 2020, Maybe Sammy was awarded the Michter Art of Hospitality award for providing the best hospitality experience in the world as rated by 500 members (250 males, 250 females) around the world. Stefano and the team couldn't have been more chuffed and reminded them of what they had, where they could go and to never stop pushing for their dream in hospitality.  The future of the Maybe Sammy and Maybe Frank team is looking bright, with more venues potentially on the way. So be sure to grab a drink and tune in to this episode of Roots Podcast and follow  @roots_hospitality on Instagram for the latest guest info and soundbites. Music by Charlie Fester.

With the next season of Fat Pizza set to start filming next week, Bobo took some time out to have a chat with HEAVY and answer your questions. This week he tackles these subjects... will Bobo get out of prison in the next series, will he get more screentime and unleash the chainsaw, is his guitar/chainsaw in the picture real and where did the idea come from, how to stop a dog humping your leg, does he play an instrument and how he would deal with the COVID situation if he ran the country...                                                                                                                                                     About Johnny BoxerA boy was born in Haifa, Israel 1959 to Kazimiera and Marcus Bokser. They married in war torn Warsaw, Poland circa 1956 after Marcus (a shoemaker who ran his own shop) hired Kazimiera as his assistant on the same day she’d walked in to purchase a pair of red shoes.Five year old Johnny (Janusz in Polish) arrived in Australia as a refugee with his parents first staying at a detention centre in Bonegilla, Victoria then transferred to Villawood,NSW.Settling in Campsie, JB’s parents worked hard, eventually purchasing property and setting up a secure position in the community. Kazimiera involved herself in local church activities such as teaching scripture and singing in the choir as well as nursing while Marcus ran his handcrafted shoe business from Circular Quay and became a well-known identity some would refer to as a ‘philosopher’ at the Campsie Hotel. Johnny refers to his dearly departed mother and father as ‘an angel’ and ‘a cutthroat but true gentleman’ respectively. And boy did they know how to dance…Johnny followed in his parents' footsteps regarding work ethic, busying himself from the age of 7 with jobs such as paper and milk runs, delivering pharmaceuticals for a chemist and sweeping the local cinema and ice rink. While attending gigs in his teens JB met a band promoter who took him on as a roadie where he toured with the likes of AC/DC, Sherbert, Hush, Rose Tattoo, The Southern Star Band, The Who, Black Feather, Status Quo and Pink Floyd just to name a few.Boxer (his better known stage name only slightly changed from its original) also worked as a bouncer at the State Theatre and various clubs/strip joints throughout Sydney’s notorious Kings Cross. From there, of course, he became the worlds most feared pizza chef, Bobo, in the hit TV series Fat Pizza. This was just the beginning of what JB refers to as his magic carpet ride through life.Weighing in now at 61 years he sure has a story or two to tell.Wanna know more? Just ask away…

If you're itching for an out-of-the-way bucolic escape this summer, with a hefty serving of history, you'd be hard-pressed to beat the Waitaki Valley's Campbell Park Estate, for its sheer dramatic backstory, spanning pioneering spirit and a dark side, and a setting of smashing distinction. It’s a back-of-beyond bolt-hole, in which so many cachet destinations are virtually on your doorstep, including Oamaru, Wanaka, Dansey’s Pass and Omarama, not to mention the gems of the Waitaki Valley. It’s only been in the past year or so that Campbell Park Estate has been reopened for accommodation, at exceptionally good-value rates. Lodgings are provided in the village-like assortment of 32 character homes and cottages, boasting three and four bedrooms, which have been tastefully renovated and modernised by the current owners. The polished rimu floors and swathes of wood panelling are spectacular. Some homes are built in Oamaru stone. You may be aware that property passed into Chinese hands a couple of years ago, with the former Mainzeal director, Richard Yan, becoming the sole owner of the 32-hectare estate. With a baronial-style castle and stables built in 1876, an old jailhouse, fruit orchards and field garden adjoining a working farm and vineyard, a 200-seat restaurant, indoor gym, tennis courts, swimming pool, a grade-seven aircraft runway, a subterranean cave and its own village - Campbell Park Estate looms like a mini-township in the rolling North Otago countryside. Needless to say, it has limitless development possibilities. For the unwitting motorist, who inadvertently strays down Special School Road, from Duntroon, it’s quite the revelation to stumble upon this property, laid out in the style of an old English estate, shuffle into view. But first, how did it all begin? William Dansey, the pioneering Otago runholder, purchased and lived on the Otekaieke sheep and cattle station, that would later be named Campbell Park Estate in 1857. Dansey is chiefly credited for establishing an alpine trail through from North Otago to Central Otago, his name being immortalised in Dansey’s Pass, which scales the Kakanui Mountains to connect the Waitaki Valley with the mighty Maniototo. The intrepid runholder built the first house on the estate in 1861, “Dansey’s Hut” which is one of North Otago’s first recorded buildings and is still on the property today. As I admired his rustic Oamaru stone shack, pangs of melancholy surged through me, as I reflected on the sudden deaths of his two young children. They died after eating poisonous tutu and they are buried on the hill above his cottage.Shortly afterwards, Dansey sold the station, shifting to Oamaru where he apparently became the first man in the town to receive a pension. The property was bought by Robert Campbell, fresh from Eton and from wealthy Scottish stock, who snapped up a vast tracts of surrounding farmland. Otekaieke Station stretched virtually from Kurow to the Maerewhenua River at Duntroon, running back over to Dansey’s Pass. Campbell imported the finest merino ewes from Victoria, Australia, and rambouillet (Spanish merino) rams, along with quality cattle, to stock his land. You can still see where the Campbell’s quarried limestone from the hills on the estate for many of their estate buildings. Here’s a fascinating nugget of history: Limestone from his quarry at Otekaieke was used as ballast in ships making the return journey from New Zealand to Australia, and much of Circular Quay in Sydney was built out of these limestone blocks. The two-storey homestead, which is still on the property, was subsequently deemed insufficient by Campbell and his wife Emma, so a monumental construction project was commissioned. In 1868, he shipped over a massive workforce of Scottish craftsmen along with materials from Scotland and Italy, to build New Zealand’s first “Castle.”This 35-room baronial mansion, awash in decorative touches, was hewn out of the valley’s locally-sourced limestone. Not just the 100,000+ in the Domain but the new energy in the climate movement. One of the marshalls was Jenny, a climate activist I knew from 12 years ago. She reminded me of the street theatre we used to do down at Circular Quay, dramatising the climate emergency. I’d borrow a polar bear suit from a Greenpeace Giant and was glad of the disguise as I didn’t want to be recognised from my workplace. I had piles of fur around my ankles but Japanese Tourists would put their arms around me and want a cute photo. Most people didn’t understand at all that we were doing a “Die In” Climate Change was not mainstream. Now, Jenny said, she went to organising meetings and”it’s all new people”.The kaleidoscope has turned and a new coalition of students and workers, parents and professionals, has unified around the disbelief that we are still making profits out of an economy that is creating catastrophe. The media reported this as a children’s event and missed the fact that unions and churches were there in great numbers. The students have been making allies with unionists and have been on a steep learning curve about the  dire realities of striking for most workers in Australia. As I wove through the crowd I learned that many workers are affected by climate change already. You will hear from a ship builder working inside the metal hulk on a heatwave day, of the firemen and forest workers confronted by uncontrollable fires in areas where they are running out of water. Factory workers processing milk are losing jobs because of the drought. Electricians working on solar farm installations are horrified at unskilled casuals working for $10 an hour and no regulation of the work.  There were hundreds of stories there to be told As we walked past the parliament I imagined a cynical sign in the sky “....Tell someone who cares!” because this new climate awareness of workers and young people does not seem to be registering among our leaders. If you’re looking for an early winter warm-up, Vivid Sydney is a festive beacon of seduction, hauling in the crowds like moths to the flame. If you’ve never “done” Vivid, you must. It’s an essential, albeit seasonal, slice of the city’s soul. Gearing up for its 11th year, this rampantly successful festival takes top slot on the cultural calendar. The PR pap now describes it as a “23-day intersection of art, technology and commerce.” Yes, there’s live music and seminars and thought-leaders. The Cure is playing at Sydney Opera House and there’s an audience with Spike Lee. It’s kind of like a Ted-X conflab with Christmas trees. But truth be told, it’s the lights, the giant projections, the trippy installations, the illuminations that woos millions to this unrivalled spectacle. And in the past few years, the lighting spectacles have fanned out far beyond Circular Quay, with a swag of locations festooned in wonder. There’s also the famous Light Walk, which curates more than 50 radiant works into the largest gallery of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This year, there’s nine precincts to check out with large-scale installations, including Taronga Zoo. In fact, what is particularly distinctive about this year’s edition of Vivid is the huge family-friendly focus. Here’s a few examples. Taronga Zoo is staging “Lights for the Wild.” Follow the illuminated trail which winds through the zoo's grounds and meet the giant multimedia light sculptures, from the magnificent Sumatran tiger and her new cubs to a swarm of tiny buzzing bees and the larger-than-life gorilla family. Take a step into a tech-filled wonderland at the Samsung Electric Playground, inspired by the best features of the new Galaxy S10. It’s being billed as tomorrow’s playground, where you control the light patterns. The Argyle Cut in The Rocks is where to head for the new Pixar Studios Installation, pulsating with 30 years of Pixar characters. Darling Harbour's Tumbalong Park is being transformed into playSPACE, where six space themed installations have been designed to create the sensation of giving you a trip into deep space. It doesn’t often snow in Sydney, so Circular Quay is going to be staging Let it Snow, a fully immersive installation replicating the sensation of walking through a snow blizzard. And alongside the Opera House, one of Vivid’s most popular canvases is Customs House. This year it will be transformed into an underwater wonderland, a deep-dive under the harbour, heaving with neon sea creatures. And one of my Sydney friends tell me that there’s a lot of buzz about Beetopia. This is going to be installed in the Royal Botanic Gardens, a touch-sensitive, giant glowing bee hotel which emits the smell of honey. Crawling with oversized native bees, the installation is touch sensitive, so when you pat a bee, it will respond with a gentle buzz – a bit like a vibrating phone. Meanwhile, Luna Park is stepping up to the spirit of Vivid. Coinciding with the festival, they are launching Volare, their newest ride, which claims to be Australia's largest and highest wave swinger. It will mimic the sensation of flying above the lights of Vivid. Also, while you’re at Vivid, check out the massive Star Wars exhibition which has been in Sydney for a few months, but is leaving town in mid-June for Tokyo. Lucas Films has prised open its archives to showcase some of its treasures. 200 original objects used in the making of the Star Wars movies – costumes, props, models, you name, including the original R2-D2 and the Millennium Falcon. That’s on at the Powerhouse Museum until June 10.Vivid Sydney roars into life on Friday week, May 24, running through to June 15. Treat the family to a weekender in Sydney’s warm early winter glow.  https://nz.sydney.com/

In Chinatown bekommst du authentisches, chinesisches Essen.

Good Food Guide editor Myffy Rigby, Chat Thai and Boon Cafe co-director Palisa Anderson and an actual legit winemaker, Trisha Nelson who runs Ajola in Lazio, Italy, joined me for a chat recorded live at the most recent Rootstock food and wine festival at Sydney's Carriageworks. So, we talk about memorable experiences with booze, totally nerd out about agriculture (given that Trisha produces organic wine via a vineyard in Italy and Palisa runs the Boon Luck Farm in Byron Bay), how to deal with people who freak out when they encounter "natural wine", the best places to drink in Sydney (and beyond) and also the incredible stories that Myffy's written about for the Good Food print section in the Sydney Morning Herald (she recounts some of Lennox Hastie's near-death experiences in Europe, which are as flat-out dramatic as something out of a movie). We also cover Trisha's surprising career path to becoming a winemaker, and how working alongside Rootstock co-founder Giorgio de Maria at Berta played a part in her making wine in Lazio. You can read Myffy's writing at goodfood.com.au and the Good Food Guide, check out some of the wines we talked about at Chat Thai (in particular the Circular Quay branch) and find Trisha's wine at 10 William Street and via Giorgio de Maria's online wine store, http://www.giorgiodemaria.com. PS The wine we try during the podcast is Ajola's lovely Bianco Trilli 2016: it is a direct pressing of moscato left on the skins of procanico. Procanico is the local strain of trebbiano in that part of Lazio and it turns a lovely pink colour when it ripens. PPS Thanks to the Rootstock crew for inviting us and to Emma Hutton at The Cru Media for her help with making this podcast possible.

Oktober 2015. Und hektisch.„You are the German, right?“ fragen mich viele Hochzeitsgäste. Ja, ich bin der Deutsche, der hier mal gelebt hat. Jetzt lebe ich nicht mehr hier. Ich stecke irgendwie zwischen zwei Welten. Übermorgen starte ich meinen Roadtrip die Küste hoch von Sydney nach Brisbane. Vielleicht finde ich so meine Liebe zu diesem wundervollen Land wieder. Mein erster Stopp ist Port Macquarie zum Whale Watching

In the most gorgeous Circular Quay in Sydney, in the Gateway Building is nestled a lovely little coffee gem, known as THE ESPRESSO ROOM... In this little den of caffeine, only the best is served in the form of ONA coffee from the bat cave of brilliance itself in Canberra, The ONA ROASTERY! At the head of this distribution of this devilish dark brew, here in Sydney, is the gorgeous Freya Crickmore, a lady with an outstanding passion for coffee and knowledge and patience beyond my sphere of understanding. It takes a special set of skills to manage a cafe, and the team that revolves around the success of said cafe must be well taken care of, and Freya has these skills. She shared with me a few of her tips and tricks as a barista, manager and people person... I hope I'm using that term correctly... And what it's like working along side coffee legends such as Sasa Sestic & Hugh Kelly and how in sharing the passion for coffee it builds a beautiful and solid community of well energised, happy people...
