Whilst studying at University in 2012, Co-Founders Lucy Ross and Jamie Bartlett found the university's optical clinic which became an integral source of inspiration for the development for their first spectacle frames. Thanks to the kind support of technical officer Gavin Hill and head lecturer Glyn Walsh, they were gently introduced to the technical and practical aspects of optical frames. Fortunately for them, the on-site optical clinic became a hunting-ground for the mechanical workings of spectacles. During many “pestering sessions” the optical staff and lecturers were kind enough to demonstrate the handling and dispensing of glasses frames. It was a curious endeavour which provided a first-hand understanding of both the design and optical elements of eyewear.Having studied Product Design together, they both had experience in 3D modelling, prototyping and manufacturing processes. After graduating, they swiftly built a small workshop at the bottom of Lucy's garden where they continued to practice and hone their skills. Since then they've invested in numerous machines, tools and components which has allowed them to design and make their own spectacles and sunglasses frames on-site. Banton Framework frames aren't just any old import that came from somewhere else, they come straight from their own hands in Glasgow. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we sit down and speak to Jamie Bartlett, Co-Founder of Banton Frameworks. Our host Peter Brooker speaks to Jamie about the brand's beginnings during university. The co-founders would break into the university during the summer so they could keep making frames to sell. This then helped them make enough money to buy their own first machine which would enable them to set up their own workshop. They also discuss UK manufacturing, bespoke frames, polarized lenses, popular shapes and biodegradable acetate. The discussion also touches upon leveraging social media for sales and working with influencers.Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here. We promise to only send you the good stuff.

When Oliver Bolton ordered 250,000 cans of his new drinks brand without any external market validation what so ever, he probably found himself in a little bit of a rut. Fast forward to today, he has not only made a success of that first business but evolved to create various drinks brands that you may have come across. The particular brand I’m familiar with and enjoy is ‘What A Melon’ which is a brand of watermelon water. In this conversation, Olly tells us how the idea for ‘What A Melon’ was born, his experience winning the Richard Brandson backed Virgin VOOM crowdfunded campaign which raising £77,000 and what life is now like as a drinks brand owner stocked in most food and drink retailers in the UK. I spoke to Olly at their London HQ surrounded by as much melon merchandise as you could imagine. The walls were melon, the drinks were melon, the carpets were melon there was even a melon bike in the room. “I’ve spent my life always wanting to have my own business” Welcome to another episode of life design diaries where Lucy and I share simplified knowledge to help you live a fulfilling life on your own terms. Now, if you’ve ever found yourself wanting a business but you just don’t have the idea yet then this interview is for you! Andy Jefferies from Dock & Bay tells us his story of how he struggled to find his business idea, how he eventually found it, and the rapid journey that has now lead him on. This journey includes quitting his corporate career, going travelling and eventually arriving at Dragons Den, which for our American listeners is similar to shark tank. Dock and Bay’s first product was the original quick-dry beach towels and with a polished pitch and beautiful brand, they not only secured Deborah Meaden as a new business partner but the grabbed the attention of the public watching and sold over 6000 units in 48 hours. Another persons attention they captured was mine, and so thats why I’m particularly excited to share with you my conversation with Andy Jefferies. On this episode of LIFE DESIGN DIARIES, we answer another one of your questions. If you would like to ASK us a question, please visit https://www.lifedesigndiaries.com/ask Here is the question in full: “Often It feels like women need to have it all, career, family, beauty, social life, domestic control, finances in check. Statistically, even when women are in high power jobs they still end up doing more of the ‘home’ tasks... it’s just feels HARD. Even though it’s probably more equal than it ever has been. Lucy do you ever struggle with your identity as a ‘woman’ and which of these things you ‘should be’ doing? And do you think Ross has the same worries? Ross - for you as a white man, do you have any advice to woman feeling under confident because of these pressures?” We candidly discuss how women progress and stand on an equal playing field in 2018, and our thoughts on how women can grow a family and work at the same time. We also talk about how clickbait, fake news and influential voices are incorrectly informing our opinions, and how important it is to be able to shut out the noise and make your own mind up. This episode is PACKED full of practical advise, tips and lessons we’ve learned to grow your business. Firstly we talk through how to change your thinking and answer the IMPORTANT questions in order to develop your brand. Having struggled for many days putting a website together for a new product we’re launching, we reminded ourselves that people buy your mission (your WHY), rather than your product features. Focussing on features alone is lazy thinking until you have developed the deeper, more meaningful mission of the company. That’s what people are going to relate to. In the second half of the episode, we cover the topic of sales. We’ve both grown so much since we learned the art of sales and want to share our thoughts on just how important it is in everyday life as well as business. We cover some practical tips we use to get in front of people and build a strong relationship. This episode covers loads of topics within the two broad categories of your mission and sales. More specifically: Your Mission: Why your mission is so important Practical steps to define your WHY Why you should stop thinking about your features and benefits and tackle the difficult questions in your business How to stand out in a crowded market No one cares about you or your product! Storytelling & finding a narrative within your business How to better understand your niche How to evolve emotion within your brand Sales: Why everything is sales Why we need to stop seeing ‘sales’ as a negative word How to leverage larger companies to grow your business Practical methods to get in front of people The power of your existing network & how to use it How to write a great outreach email When to send outreach emails How to land the interview you want Importance of lasting impressions References Design Drop Email | Sign Up Here Wix TETTA CATCH LIFE DESIGN DIARIES ON Website Instagram Facebook Please let us know what you think of the podcast! Our first Anonymous Question episode! If you want to submit your anonymous question for future episodes, head over to https://www.lifedesigndiaries.com/question and ask away. We tackle a difficult topic in this episode: Hyper productivity and perfectionism. We answer ‘How do we maintain balance in life, work & relationships?' With the current world hitting us from every angle with messages that we need to be better, richer, slimmer, more and live the ‘perfect’ life, we have some strong opinions on why this is wrong and how to manage it and take control. We give a global perspective on the subject, having witnessed and studied how some of the far east behave and react. We talk minimalism and the power it has to free the mind. After all, it’s important sometimes to ask yourself the question: What am I working so hard to keep up for? Is it the current pressures of society or is it your perception of those pressures? We discuss the devastating news this week of DJ and producer Avicii. At only 28 years old it has come to light days ago that he sadly took his own life. Being the same age as him, this really hit home and made us evaluate some difficult questions on what happiness is and how you can never understand what someone else is thinking and so shouldn’t compare yourself to other people. It will only bring negativity. Instead, the answer is surely to look internally. Focussing on yourself and doing the things YOU want to do. We talk life coaches and mentors. How to find them and where we gather inspiration from. Finally, we talk about how to do the things you want to do. Imposter Syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychosomatic pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud". Analysis paralysis or paralysis by analysis is the state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome. Both of these are experienced by us (and most people) most days. We dig into the definition of these and discuss some of the methods and rationalisation techniques we have used to overcome them, leading to positive outcomes.
