Do you want to become self employed this year? Are you keen to find out what life is really like on the other side of having a job? If you want to make the leap away from employment and earn your own living, this episode is for you. Matthew Knight is a Strategy and Innovation Partner working for himself. Having left his job years ago to pursue this new path, Matthew has firsthand experience of the ups and downs that come with self employment. In this episode, we discuss many of the areas that aren’t often told. Struggles with mental health, imposter syndrome, clients, companionship and more. These are all such important topics, especially when you step into the uncertain path of self employment. I say this because going it alone brings a whole host of questions, choices and challenges. The so called ‘freedom’ that comes with working independently can very often lead to overwhelm, uncertainty and difficulty and we discuss our experiences of all these during this conversation. Matthew was completely honest and authentic and I know this insight will be so useful to so many people in a similar situation. Please enjoy my conversation with Matthew Knight. To give you a slight insight into how popular this bank is becoming, recently they raised an additional £20m from a crowdfunding campaign… £18m of it came in just 2 hours and 45 minutes. People who use Monzo, often turn into raving fans. Think about it, when was the last time you heard someone raving about a bank? I feel strange. I'm not quite as busy as I could be, and it's giving me more time for chats and side projects, but I'm feeling like I am not really doing anything productive. Why are we so tuned to feel like doing paid work is productive, but doing exploration, investment in yourself and future-facing work is less important? If it was anyone else, i'd be telling them to embrace the quiet times, and make best use of it... but following your own advice is far harder than dishing it out. That was the LinkedIn post I stumbled across which lead me to todays guest. I didn’t write this post, and neither did she, but it was her answer to this post, addressing this situation of feeling unproductive when focussing on yourself that got me fascinated into how she thinks. Rachel Tillman is a psychotherapist, she helps people and organisations, successfully navigate change as they work toward wholeness and more meaningful engagement. She uses creative, refreshing, and honest ways to do this and believes work should be life-giving. Yes, on this podcast we’ve had on what you’d call ‘successful’ founders of companies in recent weeks to learn how they built the brands they are so proud of, but I’m so excited to share with you this episode with Rachel and provide a fascinating perspective on a whole host of topics that can no doubt help all of us listening in whatever pursuit you have. Just a quick caveat, none of Rachel’s advice should be taken as medical advice. More, her thoughts on these wide ranging topics Its a good one, please enjoy my conversation with Rachel Tillman. “Think like a big business and act like a small one” What's the worst that can happen? Well, when The Primal Pantry, a Paleo brand on a mission to start a real-food revolution, slipped from the heights of growing a £1.7m turnover business in only 3 years, to running out of cash and having to take a significant loan from an employee, this mantra of ‘what's the worst that can happen’ would surely have taken on a whole new meaning. Welcome back to Life Design Diaries, I’m Lucy Menghini and on this episode I’m speaking with Suzie Walker, founder of the Primal Pantry. It was amazing to get to know Suzie and hear her fascinating story including how she started, her path to growth and how she navigated this particularly tricky time all whilst balancing the rest of her life including being a great mum to her daughter. If you’re looking to start or progress within the food industry, this episode provides some great advice for you. And if you’re not in the food game, you can take so much from Suzie’s thought process, approach to growth and decisions she’s made. Hands up if you would like to be the owner of a brand that has grown so fast that in less than 3 years, that its gone from zero to turning over millions of pounds? What about if you could take that brand into huge partnerships with some of the most sought after retailers in the UK? And what about if you could, say, have fans for your brand including Kylie Jenner, the whole love island cast and 342k of them on instagram. Have you got your hand raised? The Gypsy Shrine is the brand that has managed to do all of the above, like I said, in just three short years. The Gypsy Shrine is a creative cosmetic brand. They make face glitter, body jewels, glitter bums, glitter boobs, basically everything glitter and are adding to their products all the time as we discuss later. I spoke with Jenna Meek, founder of the Gypsy Shrine and discussed the fascinating story how she and her, now growing team have managed to get into places the quite frankly, most startups would only dream about. You’re of course listening to Life Design Diaries. I’m Ross Menghini and in typical fashion for this podcast, we’re not going to focus just on the sparkle, but dig deeper, into what its REALLY like to be the founder of such a business. Jenna shared so much good stuff in this talk and I’m also honoured as this is Jenna’s first podcast interview, and so… you heard it here first, Jenna Meek of the Gypsy shrine . When Oliver Bolton ordered 250,000 cans of his new drinks brand without any external market validation what so ever, he probably found himself in a little bit of a rut. Fast forward to today, he has not only made a success of that first business but evolved to create various drinks brands that you may have come across. The particular brand I’m familiar with and enjoy is ‘What A Melon’ which is a brand of watermelon water. In this conversation, Olly tells us how the idea for ‘What A Melon’ was born, his experience winning the Richard Brandson backed Virgin VOOM crowdfunded campaign which raising £77,000 and what life is now like as a drinks brand owner stocked in most food and drink retailers in the UK. A big happy birthday to the Dalai Lama, a big source of inspiration for today’s podcast. “The three factors that seem to have the greatest influence on increasing our happiness are our ability to reframe our situation more positively, our ability to experience gratitude, and our choice to be kind and generous.” - Dalai Lama We take you through our thoughts after Lucy was recently praised for being selfish. Something she immediately thought of as a negative trait and took offence too. However, it inspired her to ponder on the topic and try to better understand the motivation of the comment. We discuss the tricky last month we’ve had travelling which the develops into a more detailed conversation on stress. Recording this from Sri Lanka, we’ve recently experienced the uncomfortable periods and moments that come with travel and discuss our last few weeks in Chaing Mai Thailand. Travelling the world has so many upsides: the experiences, new cultures and freedom you have, however there is also a sacrifice that comes with travel. This week we discuss what those sacrifices are and give an insight into the negative side of travel. Stress Our topic of the week is stress. How and when we’ve felt stressed in the past and what we do to overcome stress. We talk about the different types of stress and what you can do to change your own perspective that can benefit you and leave you feeling more positive. This conversation delves far deeper than just Amazon tips. When Irina Balyurko approached me to be on the show, I was particularly interested to hear how she realized that climbing the corporate ladder was taking her in the opposite direction of how she wanted to live. She took the decision to leave her prestigious role as a VP and go travelling with her husband and at the time, 18 month old son. In this episode, we dig into into Irina’s story, how she evaluates risk, what it’s like travelling with a young son, and how to be stand out and be successful on Amazon. The worlds largest online retailer Amazon is a huge opportunity for anyone wanting to explore commerce and selling products online. Irina is now an e-commerce strategist who helps product-based brands launch and thrive on Amazon. Over her career, Irina has helped hundreds of brands generate millions of dollars in sales on Amazon, and achieve such results as, doubling sales in 3 months, and growing over 500% in sales in a year. We also discuss some of the challenges faced when wanting to climb the corporate ladder as a mother but also wanting to balance seeing her son and family. This episode is PACKED full of practical advise, tips and lessons we’ve learned to grow your business. Firstly we talk through how to change your thinking and answer the IMPORTANT questions in order to develop your brand. Having struggled for many days putting a website together for a new product we’re launching, we reminded ourselves that people buy your mission (your WHY), rather than your product features. Focussing on features alone is lazy thinking until you have developed the deeper, more meaningful mission of the company. That’s what people are going to relate to. In the second half of the episode, we cover the topic of sales. We’ve both grown so much since we learned the art of sales and want to share our thoughts on just how important it is in everyday life as well as business. We cover some practical tips we use to get in front of people and build a strong relationship. This episode covers loads of topics within the two broad categories of your mission and sales. More specifically: Your Mission: Why your mission is so important Practical steps to define your WHY Why you should stop thinking about your features and benefits and tackle the difficult questions in your business How to stand out in a crowded market No one cares about you or your product! Storytelling & finding a narrative within your business How to better understand your niche How to evolve emotion within your brand Sales: Why everything is sales Why we need to stop seeing ‘sales’ as a negative word How to leverage larger companies to grow your business Practical methods to get in front of people The power of your existing network & how to use it How to write a great outreach email When to send outreach emails How to land the interview you want Importance of lasting impressions References Design Drop Email | Sign Up Here Wix TETTA CATCH LIFE DESIGN DIARIES ON Website Instagram Facebook Please let us know what you think of the podcast! In this episode we tackle goal setting: how to do it and how to simplify it. We also talk about the lessons learned reflecting on 12 months since starting a business and we give an overview on our current location, Chiang Mai. When we woke on our first day in Chiang Mai, we sat out on our balcony, coffee in hand, and talked through goals we’d set in Bali and Vietnam, what we’ve achieved, what we hadn’t & why we hadn’t. Recalibrate and set more for the next 4 weeks in Thailand. This activity that we force ourselves to do has become an important activity for many different reasons, all of which we explain to you in our 10th episode. This month also marks 12 months of being self employed for Lucy. We talk through how it all came about, her main lessons and reflect on important moments. Our first Anonymous Question episode! If you want to submit your anonymous question for future episodes, head over to https://www.lifedesigndiaries.com/question and ask away. We tackle a difficult topic in this episode: Hyper productivity and perfectionism. We answer ‘How do we maintain balance in life, work & relationships?' With the current world hitting us from every angle with messages that we need to be better, richer, slimmer, more and live the ‘perfect’ life, we have some strong opinions on why this is wrong and how to manage it and take control. We give a global perspective on the subject, having witnessed and studied how some of the far east behave and react. We talk minimalism and the power it has to free the mind. After all, it’s important sometimes to ask yourself the question: What am I working so hard to keep up for? Is it the current pressures of society or is it your perception of those pressures? We discuss the devastating news this week of DJ and producer Avicii. At only 28 years old it has come to light days ago that he sadly took his own life. Being the same age as him, this really hit home and made us evaluate some difficult questions on what happiness is and how you can never understand what someone else is thinking and so shouldn’t compare yourself to other people. It will only bring negativity. Instead, the answer is surely to look internally. Focussing on yourself and doing the things YOU want to do. We talk life coaches and mentors. How to find them and where we gather inspiration from. Finally, we talk about how to do the things you want to do. Imposter Syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychosomatic pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud". Analysis paralysis or paralysis by analysis is the state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome. Both of these are experienced by us (and most people) most days. We dig into the definition of these and discuss some of the methods and rationalisation techniques we have used to overcome them, leading to positive outcomes.
