Ever wonder how it really feels to carry someone else's baby—and make tough medical calls when hopes and bodies collide? We sit down with Jana, a Portland-based psychologist and surrogate, to unpack the real emotional load of surrogacy: induction pressure without clear medical cause, a lightning-fast birth in triage, and the quiet, complicated moments after delivery when your body wants to feed a baby who isn't coming home with you.We dive into perinatal mood and anxiety disorders—how anxiety, irritability, sleep changes, and intrusive thoughts can surface even in people with no prior history—and why a specialized clinician makes a difference. Jana explains how vague contract language like “follow doctor's guidance” can become a fault line when preferences diverge, and she offers grounded strategies for advocacy that keep trust intact. She also breaks down the difference between “medical necessity” and “support necessity,” showing where confidential, nonjudgmental care helps surrogates process guilt, set boundaries, and stay steady through IVF meds, monitoring, and all the waiting. There's practical guidance throughout: what symptoms to watch for, how OB screenings work, and how to use agency wellness benefits without fear of stigma. We talk about family dynamics, partner support, and what to ask agencies beyond glossy benefits—like “tell me about a journey that didn't go well.” Jana's dual lens as psychologist and surrogate gives this conversation rare clarity and compassion, translating hard moments into usable tools you can apply right away.If this episode resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who's exploring surrogacy, and leave a review to help more people find these stories. Your support helps us bring honest, useful conversations to anyone navigating the path to parenthood—or helping someone else get there.https://heart-mind-therapy.com/carried-with-care/Send us a texthttps://stopsitsurrogate.com

One in five new mums and one in ten new dads are affected by perinatal depression and anxiety, which impact approximately 100,000 families in Australia each year. In this conversation, Julie Borninkhof, CEO of PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Post Natal Depression) discusses the complexities of perinatal anxiety and depression. She highlights the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms, the impact of circumstantial factors on mental health, and the need for support. Many of us put our challenges down to other factors and early parenthood without getting the support we need. We discuss how this can impact our relationships and possible relationship breakdowns. The discussion also covers the significance of birth experiences and the necessity of seeking help early. Perinatal Mental Health Week is coming up from November 17th to the 23rd. This Perinatal Mental Health Week, PANDA is encouraging Australians to make the call to the PANDA helpline and get immediate, specialised support from someone who has been there. [Note: This episode shares information on delicate topics, such as postnatal mood disorders, postnatal psychosis & suicide. Please use discretion when deciding if this conversation is right for you. ]-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Today, I speak with Lisiane Latouche, a Perinatal & Infant Mental Health Clinician with over 30 years experience. I have personally known Lisiane for 15 years and have had the privilege of working with her both in private practice and in other mother-baby events & workshops, our latest initiative being a Mums & Bub weekend retreat. This is an insightful and informative conversation in which Lisiane brings both her expertise and authentic self together to explain the various challenges new families may face when transitioning to parenthood. She details how we can determine the difference between things like the baby blues, maternal overwhelm, perinatal mood disorders, including postnatal depression and anxiety as well as educates on the delicate topic of postnatal psychosis, a rare, but serious postnatal disorder that requires a prompt and specialised approach. You can't help but notice Lisiane's compassion and dedication to her work and generously shares resources and a message of reassurance to all mothers that, despite the hurdles, most mums are doing their best and that this is enough. It is comforting to note that even if there are times, as a mother, that we become emotionally or psychologically unwell, we can recover and move forward into fulfilling and healthy lives with ourselves and our families. Are you pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant or trying to become pregnant and dealing with anxiety? Or did you experience anxiety in pregnancy? Perhaps it was anxiety due to the physical symptoms, or because you arrived at pregnancy after experiencing reproductive trauma, with lots of worry around conception and fertility, or loss, or because for whatever reason, the hormones in pregnancy just drove you into fight or flight mode. Maybe you thought you'd feel amazing and excited and at ease (which is the picture often painted of pregnancy) and in reality you were incredibly on edge, which is normal though not widely discussed. This episode where we explore perinatal anxiety is for you. I am joined by Michelle Flynn, perinatal psychotherapist and founder of An Croi Beag Psychotherapy. She has a wonderful gentle way about exploring this topic and I hope it's both comforting, useful and of course validating for anyone going through this or having gone through it in the past. In today's episode Leonie shares her experience with perinatal anxiety and depression which manifested as a profound sense of defeat in pregnancy and visceral rage in postpartum. She opted for talking therapy with a psychologist and managed her symptoms but she was still overwhelmed at birth when the love for her baby wasn't immediate. It's so important to talk about these experiences because studies show that up to 40 percent of mothers don't feel love for their baby at birth (instead, it grows and develops over time). Leonie had two positive vaginal births with a private obstetrician who encouraged her despite her requests for planned caesareans. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Lina gets emotional on the mic (again) but this time talking about how her anxiety is getting worse as time goes on. She shares how she woke up with a panic attack the other night and what her intrusive thoughts were about. Lina talks about how although she feels lucky that she hasn't had any nausea or food aversions, she's been experiencing perinatal anxiety and pregnancy insomnia. She talks about she believes that sleep in the foundation to having good mental health and how the second sleep deteriorates, everything else seems to go too. Lina talks about why she's interested in hypnobirthing for her 2nd baby. For her first delivery, she suffered from a full body allergic reaction that her doctors and dermatologists couldn't diagnose. Through self-diagnosis, she suspects that it was PUPPP (pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy) that turned into a postpartum condition. She thinks the postpartum condition could have been caused by the amount of medication she was given between induction and the epidural and how her body was oversensitive and just started to attack itself. Anxiety and depression affects up to one in five women, and one in ten men, in the perinatal period (being post birth). A fact provided by PANDA, the Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia Organisation. And a fact that seemingly keeps being kept as a hidden secret from each other, amongst new parents. There seems to be this misconception that it has to be absolutely extreme feelings or a major incident to seek help, and an ongoing dangerous theme that parents who are suffering tell themselves that “we're fine”, rather than admitting when we are not. Anxiety and depression can have more of a treacle effect rather than an immediate clear change. Where over time through inconsistent sleep, lack of consistent support, or inadequate healthy outlets for reprieve, the anxiety or depression can snowball into larger behavioural changes that effect you, and your family. So we try to understand the domino effect by talking to Megan Cassar, who shares her incredible story of her own perinatal depression that she experienced when having children, that led her to reaching out for help, and her profound career change of working for PANDA and helping others through her own learning experience. On today's episode, I have one of the most honest stories any new parent has ever told on this show. If you have been listening for a while, you know that each season, I feature clients who are willing to share. I invite people with all sorts of varied experiences and perspectives. But I do try to shine a light on topics for which people need more information, topics that people need to learn more about and especially where I think a personal story is the best way to talk about it. So today, Patti, a client who stands out in my mind as one of the people who struggled the most with a history of depression and anxiety before, during and after her pregnancy, graciously shares her story. At times, I worried that maybe I wouldn't know how best to help her but she worked hard and was so willing to try almost anything I suggested. I found that to be such a unique quality because as you likely know, anxiety and depression can be debilitating but she was rather persistent in her pursuit of happiness. Episode #50: We're joined by Laura Vollset & Maggie Muir to discuss Perinatal Depression & Anxiety (PPD). While this is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, it is often unrecognized and under-diagnosed. Laura shares her experience of having had debilitating PPD after the birth of her twins. She sought treatment, found support, and wended her way to back to wellness and joy in parenting. Maggie Muir, a Licensed Psychotherapist, Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and Perinatal Support Group Leader explains what PPD is, who is at risk, and how and where mothers and family members can get help.
In this episode I chat to well-known author Jessica Urlichs @jessurlichs_writer about her three pregnancies and births. In her first pregnancy she was a magnet for grief-filled stories which exacerbated her fear and anxiety around birth. During labour she felt unsupported and unheard and she consequently experienced birth trauma and postnatal anxiety. Jess talks at length about her significant breastfeeding challenges and her choice to bottle feed to sustain her physical and mental health. Her second and third births were both healing and positive and she consciously chose to have epidurals to ensure she was in a calm and grounded mindset so she could make informed choices. I'm counting down the weeks till my new book, The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, is published. Being a new parent can be a joyful and exciting time. But there can be stigma associated with those who are dealing with perinatal depression. Combining this with the pressure of meeting cultural expectations can be especially challenging.

*CONTENT WARNING* : This episode includes discussions of Perinatal Anxiety and Mood Disorders, including scary intrusive thoughts and thoughts of suicide.Jenn and her husband were married in 2018, and knew they wanted to start a family soon after. In 2020, they became pregnant and were very excited to embark on this journey of parenthood together! While going through a pretty easy pregnancy, they found out the baby was breech at their 20 week anatomy scan, but they weren't too worried as they still had 20 weeks to go. As time went on, baby never flipped and they believed it was due to baby's large head. Although Jenn was really hoping for that “ah-hah!” moment and scheduled a c-section, she did get her “ah-hah” moment when she believed what to be her water broke at 38+5 weeks. Her and her husband drove 45 minutes to the hospital to learn it was not her water, or urine, and still do not know what it was to this day! They drove 45 minutes home and as she got out of her husbands truck, her water truly broke. They drove 45 minutes back and were ready to meet their baby boy! Jenn and her husband welcomed their son, Noah, and everything was going well. As she was praying over her son later that day, she started experiencing very scary and unwanted intrusive thoughts. Jenn had never heard of intrusive thoughts before and had no idea how to cope with them. After being home with her son and experiencing more intrusive thoughts, Jenn thought she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and started to thinking of ways to end her life to protect her son. She finally decided to share her visions with her husband. She went to her doctor and was put on medication that helped drastically. Once she researched intrusive thoughts and was diagnosed with Postpartum OCD, things made sense and she was able to bond with her son. These days Jenn is doing much better and managing her Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders through therapy and medication. She is very passionate about helping other parents through the postpartum period and is the State Lead Coordinator with Postpartum Support International. What's the difference between the natural motherly concern that the embryo or baby is fine, and a relentless worry focus on what can possibly go wrong? Future mums consider many things: their health and the health of their baby economic aspects related to loss of earnings sleep issues weight management existing emotional issues medication relationships And the list never ends! In fact some women will develop anxiety and even have panic attacks as their pregnancy progresses. In this episode I will introduce some aspects of the intense emotions that permeate pregnant women's minds and when we need to call for help.
Anxiety. It can come up at any time of your life, but it tends to increase significantly during pregnancy and postpartum and can become so intense, that it completely stops you in your tracks. It could prevent you from leaving the house, getting out of bed or even prevent you from connecting to your baby. For mama Chiara Townley, anxiety had always been present to some extent, but once she got pregnant it got worse and in postpartum, she experienced a panic attack. That was the final straw that forced her to look inwards and heal through the Chakras. Learn how to take back control and heal your own anxiety, as Chiara did, by connecting to your body and its Chakras in this episode of the Mamas in Training Podcast. Perinatal Anxiety and Depression is a cruel disease that strikes at what should be the most joyful time of your life.
One of Dr. Shannon's patients joins us on the show today to share her birth story. Each birth is so unique, there is beauty in sharing these stories, and I'm so thankful for Sarah sharing her story. Because remember, when we talk about birth, not only is a baby born, but so is a mother! She created a pretty unique birth support team which included a midwifery practice out of a hospital, a chiropractor, a perinatal therapist, and her husband. There are so many takeaways from her story, and I think a lot of moms will identify with what she shares. From realizing that she needed mental health resources during her pregnancy as well as during her postpartum time period to devouring all the childbirth education she could before birth, Sarah's story doesn't stop there. She shares the pain management techniques she used during birth, and answers the question from her midwife to her husband, “how involved do you want to be in the birth?”. Hearing her describe how the birth unfolded will bring a smile to your face. However, Sarah developed postpartum preeclampsia 1 week postpartum, and because she listened to her body, trusted her instincts, and sought emergency help, she was able to continue navigating her postpartum and motherhood journey safely. Today's guest stepped into her first pregnancy relatively easily, getting pregnant within a few months of trying…... and that was the last easy thing she experienced. She describes herself as someone who is “not a pregnancy unicorn”. She had body image issues while pregnant, felt nauseous, swollen and was generally physically uncomfortable for most of the pregnancy. And then postpartum recovery was even more challenging. A hormonal imbalance caused a too dramatic weight loss, she was visited by postpartum depression and anxiety, and a baby who wasn't particularly interested in sleeping through the night added to her 'non-unicorn' status. In an effort to dig herself out of a hole, she started researching nutrition and found a much better way forward for the second pregnancy, and ultimately for life. I learned a lot talking to my guest today and hopefully you will too. You can find her at https://thenutritiondoula.com/ and in Instagram @thenutritiondoula

It's been a while since the last time we did this, but this episode is dedicated to one of our beautiful listeners who originally emailed to suggest three other women but it was HER story I was captivated by. I think I spend longer writing these intros than I do on the episode, because I always have so much more to say after re-listening and Kate Bridgman really epitomises so many things about this show. Firstly, she gives a name to something I've been bumbling around trying to express – duality. Things can be tough and beautiful so, while some episodes do cover heavier topics, it's to show how adversity can be overcome and that yay can be one layer in a multifaceted experience. Secondly, that yay isn't just starting a business and have a profile of some sort. It's a privilege to show a different side to our more famed guests but also a joy to introduce you to those you haven't like Kate and her intrapreneurial journey in education. Thirdly that our brains are incredibly complex, and we are constantly impacted by so many things – societal expectations, misconceptions, pride, worthiness, perfectionism and these conversations help me build so much self-awareness and hope some of you gain the same. There are so many other things I can say but I'll let you soak it all up in our chat. Just a little warning, we cover some deep moments of Kate's journey with perinatal anxiety and depression to help normalise and bring awareness to the topic. But her story is so beautifully reassuring about coming out the other end after breaking to rebuild and I hope it helps even one person feel more equipped, less alone and reassured in their own journey.
